A delicate thing, but taller than most men outside of House Baratheon, Vhaena Targaryen’s hand was sought after by every lord with an unmarried son... and even some of those with loving wives and children aplenty. Not often did you happen upon a dragonrider with a gentle nature, and you could not find that within her, either, though outward appearances said otherwise. Those close to the princess often claimed she had a sailor’s mouth and housed a fury in her chest not unlike her twin brother. They also claimed that if she had been the first of Baelon and Alyssa’s children and born a boy, she would have made a ferocious leader. However, rather than becoming the ferocious king she seemed destined to be, Vhaena developed into an immensely protective mother and a devoted follower of her elder brother, King Viserys I.

vhaena was promised to viserys almost from birth. both baelon and alyssa agreed that this was a better path than betrothing her to daemon, as the two had a connection that became obvious from a young age that wasn’t there with the twins. she grew up anticipating her marriage to viserys, but in 93 AC, when vhaena was only twelve, it became clear that viserys would be required to marry for the arryn army to improve their chances against the invading myrish exiles. their betrothal was broken in order to make a match between viserys and aemma. the little dragon did not take this well and spent the better part of the next few years in her books and on dragonback rather than haunting the red keep like a heartbroken ghost. she kept this up until she was nearly sixteen, when she and viserys realized that there was something more than familial, more than duty between them. not out of distaste for aemma — i cannot imagine a world where he does not love aemma — but out of affection for each other. by 97 AC, as a result of her and viserys’s growing closeness, vhaena became pregnant. following the refusal of her father’s urging to end the pregnancy to save her reputation, she was swept in the direction of a lannister in the same year daemon was married to rhea royce. she should have been given tyland, who was already showing himself to be a clever boy, but it was rumored that the lannisters married her to jason as a slight, as they themselves felt slighted by an offer of marriage that was clearly underhanded due to its suddenness. despite both viserys and vhaena being silver-haired, their mother alyssa had dirty blonde hair that vhaena’s firstborns blessedly inherited. aenar and alyssa looked to be trueborn lannister children, save for their lilac eyes.

I never thought I could see Viserys as the target of romantic affection after Aemma's death but you made that possible!

Can you tell us anything about Vhaena and Viserys's childhood? When did they first notice there was something between them? What happened when Viserys married Aemma?

i can't even begin to tell you how happy this makes me to hear! 💕 i love viserys and aemma, so figuring out how to craft his and vhaena's relationship while also giving due respect to how he felt about her and the impact she left on him was really important to me. as for vhaena and viserys...

while vhaena was a little rebel growing up (and continued to be one through the rest of her life, honestly), she was far outstripped by daemon. her twin brother was almost constantly acting out, but she had her quiet moments and they were almost always focused around viserys. he always had a calming effect on her, even when he was a child himself, and it wasn’t surprising to anyone who knew them that vhaena ended up harboring feelings very early on. baelon betrothed them when they were still young, and at the time, vhaena was already convinced that she was in love with him. it took a little longer for viserys, but not by much. they spent so much time together — reading, horse riding, traveling, tending to her dragon. finding viserys without her acting as his shadow was a strange and uncommon occurrence.

when their father broke the betrothal in order to follow through with jaehaerys’s small council urging for the match between viserys and aemma, vhaena was heart-broken. she screamed at her father for the better part of an hour and then refused to speak to him or viserys for a month. which god, poor fifteen year old viserys felt like the worst person in the world, going from having her adore him to her hating him in an instant. she found her sense before long, though, and once she got to know aemma, the two of them became very close. they were easy friends, and the three of them were often seem together, as vhaena and viserys had been growing up. just... plus one!
