Rereading The Terror

Chapter Twenty-Nine: Irving

Not too much jumps right out at me in this chapter, apart from poor Silna's tits, which are mentioned no less than 11 times (I counted).

Irving, very wisely, is not using his extra time off (accrued by covering for wee Hodgson who has the runs) to sleep but to go out looking for Silna once again. She's moved off-ship since Hickey's near-mutiny.

He has some gifts for her too - some ships biscuits, a silk handkerchief (originally from a 'rich London girlfriend' before an 'unpleasant parting'...), and a tiny pot of marmalade. Goodsir's been hoarding it for its antiscorbutic properties but Irving's been forgoing his share, scraping it into a tiny secret pot bit by bit which is... a choice...?

Soon enough, he finds and squeezes down the tunnel to her shelter, though he does get wedged a bit along the way, and we're treated to a very prophetic little passage:

"It did not escape Irving's attention that wedged in the opening to the snowhouse as he was, Silence could easily lean over and cut his throat with that knife while there would be very little he could do about it."

She takes his gifts happily enough, especially the marmalade and in return shows him how to eat a piece of seal blubber with a knife. Irving, predictably, almost cuts his fucking nose off. He finds the meal disgusting but there's already enough of a spectre of scurvy that he can't stop eating it: "Amazingly, his empty stomach rumbled, cramped, and demanded more. Something in the reeking blubber seemed to be satisfying some deep craving he had not even known he felt. His body, if not his mind, wanted more of it."

He makes a pantomimed request for Silna to teach the men to hunt but it's not clear yet the extent to which she understands him so he literally says "Toodaloo", all the while knowing that he's going to be cringing for having done so for weeks to come which is very endearing to me.
