Hello! I was wondering, where did the story of Lady Jane Franklin laying the Union Jack flag on Sir John before his expedition come from? Did one of the two tell anyone about it or is it made up as a tale to foreshadow Franklin’s death?
Hi! I'm so flattered to receive lovely and very interesting asks like this, especially as I'm far from an expert in anything Franklin-related. I'm afraid I don't have a clear or comprehensive answer for you, my friend, but that being said, I've done my best!
-
I first came across that particular apocryphal tale in Beattie & Geiger's Frozen in Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition (1987) and have since found it mentioned by several other authors too. The earliest and most detailed reference to the story I've been able to find so far goes back to Francis J. Woodward's Portrait of Jane: A Life of Lady Franklin.
Below is the full quote:
"One day - so Davies Gilbert's daughter told her friend Caroline Fox - he was so tired that he lay down on a sofa in the lodgings they had taken in Lower Brook Street and fell asleep. Jane was sitting beside him, putting the final stitches to a flag that she had made - in the tradition of explorers' wives - for him to take to the Arctic. Anxious that he should not feel cold , she threw it over his feet. The touch of it startled him into half-wakefulness. "Why, there's a flag thrown over me!" he exclaimed, "Don't you know that they lay the Union Jack over a corpse?"
Portrait of Jane: A life of Lady Franklin, Francis J. Woodward, 1951 (p253).
-
It's not clear to me where exactly Woodward got that information though...
Davies Gilbert was an engineer, politician and at one time, president of the Royal Society while I believe the Caroline Fox referred to here was a noted diarist and writer of the time (though I could well be wrong about that!). Perhaps one explanation could be then that one or both of those women moved within the same social circles as the Franklins or were even actively friends with Lady Jane and the story originated with her?
That's purely speculation though, my friend, and beyond that, I really can't say much more with any certainty!
Does anyone else within this wonderful community of clever people have anything more to add to this? <3

Where are all the jolly tars that crewed the Agamemnon? Men for whom the carronades were less hard work than play. Oak and iron and blood were they, and every girl a darling. Sink them in their hammocks, lads, they've gone far away.

i think edward little could have been improved if he had been allowed to act on the violent impulses that he is clearly trying to subdue here:

Currently sitting on my lunchbreak rotating in my mind the idea of Little actually standing up to Crozier about his drinking only to be brutally punished as a boy as a result.
I wish I could say I was only enamoured by the fallout of such a theoretical event, by plot and themes and whatnot, but let's be real, I'm actually just enamoured by the idea of sweet Nedward vulnerable, humiliated, with his peachy wee arse on show. 👀

I’ve seen some posts talking abt this weird little moment bw Little and Irving, bc ?? What’s even going on here lads. But I think the moment makes perfect sense when you consider the news they’ve just gotten about the provisions, seeing as Irving is the one who’s been in charge of those provisions.
He oversaw the inspection of the tins. It was his job to make sure all the unsafe food was disposed of, and then it was his job to do the math on how to reduce rations after the culling. We explicitly see him relating this information to the rest of command. And after all that, to find out it was for naught? That the tins he himself deemed safe were still killing them? That he’s been working and worrying about doling out portions of literal poison to his men for years, and he had no idea? Yeah, I’d probably look a little shell shocked too :(
And Little looks over to his friend, and sees him staring into space, obviously going back over all the time he spent agonizing over rations that were killing them anyway… of course he reaches out to try and bring him out of it. I read that interaction as Little telling him, hey, this isn’t your fault, okay?

listen i don't think edward little was actually a bad first lieutenant. when we see him in the first episode he's calm and confident. he does not say much but he's amiable enough. crozier likes him, and i don't think crozier would like anyone he doesn't think capable in some way. generally he's dependable and knows what he's doing. however unfortunately for edward he has these qualities because he has a major case of eldest daughter syndrome, which means he both wants to please his mum (crozier) and has an overdeveloped sense of responsibility for his younger siblings (crew), so when they get stuck in the ice and crozier starts going (more) alcoholic, he enables his mum bc he doesn't want to disappoint her even if he doesn't agree with her, and he has to pick up the tasks and care for his siblings she's not doing, but he can't let his siblings know about their mum's situation because they'll get worried and restless. and like a true eldest daughter he has to bear the brunt of mummy's anger for being a disappointment but he also doesn't want to seek refuge with the man she divorced (fitzjames) because that feels like a betrayal. also while this is going on there is a giant bear who hunts his siblings for sport so they're dying left and right and also a changeling master manipulator who's making his siblings mad at their mum and who wants to fuck said mum before eating her like some sort of praying mantis. anyway i think i would start being miserable and anxious too.

25th April 1848
HMShips Terror and Erebus were deserted on the 22nd April 5 leagues NNW of this having been beset since 12th Sept 1846.

Oh mate, this has made my day! :)
I wish I could say that it brings me no joy to stab people in the heart with my weird wee observations but we all know that's not true, I love every second of it! >:)
