re: the xf story, imagine the impression this puts out in industry circles if this catches a press round. the guy from 1d who seems to have an off and on success is angling for a judges seat on a fading talent show produced by his supposed mentor. Even if its not true putting out a questionable article is itself damning, ever so slightly dismantles the idea of louis as a serious solo artist
Hi, anon.
In industry circles. And to the general public. And to a part of the fandom, as well.
They cast doubts on whether his solo career was viable from the very beginning with the Observer interview: Tomlinson retains a body of fans who’ve been loyal to him even when he might have looked a wobbly investment. They have been undermining him from the start. And the ending of that interview… it seems even more significant now, “Do you think your readers are still gonna wonder: ‘Why doesn’t he just not do it?’” I’m not sure, I tell him, trying to be honest. But let’s see.
Because they have never wanted him to do it. Kept from singing, pushed to the back, from the X Factor… he defied them taking up songwriting, pushing for creative freedom for the band so their sound could evolve with the fans. Despite that he still had the least solos, and has been constantly belittled and erased as an artist, and especially as a singer. They have been working to devalue his brand and to downgrade him to a tabloid celeb with the focus on his ‘personal life’ since forever and going hard throughout the last two years, selling his farcical, degrading closet, and using him to promote anything and everyone but him and his music.
As you point out, given the efforts to make him seem the least talented and least successful, the one who is struggling the most with his solo career, to have him appear in the running to be a judge in X Factor gives certain impressions: that it isn’t working out, after all; that he doesn’t care all that much about being a solo artist, since he is looking for a job in a reality TV show when he’s supposed to be working and promoting his upcoming album and tour. And it also furthers, once more, the idea that he is so close to Simon, to whom he owes everything and who will give him all the opportunities he can.
There is a round of press about changes in the X Factor judge’s panel and he is mentioned in every article: The Sun, BBC, Digital Spy, The Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Record, Express, Tellymix. And the bit in The Sun confirms, if anyone had any doubt left, how they use his mother’s death as a promotion tool for themselves, over and over again.
With all of this I also keep thinking just how much X Factor promo they got in through Louis during what little promo he had last year. Not just through his Twitter account, but also in interviews, discussing other contestants and praising Simon.
We can hope this is yet another case of using Louis’ name for publicity and no more than that. But, as you well said, even that has implications. And nothing is without consequence, and there is a cumulative effect to everything.
It’s all so unfair.
I will keep repeating it until the end of time: 1D became what it did in great part thanks to Louis, and the others have had the opportunities they have had to launch as solo artists because of that. To have them all get to be solo artists with professional support, allowed to prove themselves as artists on their own, allowed to develop and enjoy their career, with a public image that isn’t damaging or degrading… with at least a minimum of respect for them, as artists and as people. While Louis is seen as fair game to insult and ignore, gets attacked from every front, shot down and buried, again and again, while burdened with the most invasive, demanding, isolating stunts… It’s a constant uphill battle for him, on his own, with the people who are supposed to be on his side working against him. Obstacle after obstacle thrown in his path, weighed down and held back, over and over again. And Louis is just as deserving as the others of the chance to pursue his dreams.
When we talk about a fair chance now… it’s… his starting point cannot be the same, and there is so much damage to be undone. It’s so unfair. I am getting sidetracked, but it’s just… they have taken so much from him, on every level, and keep taking, and that takes a toll, and some things you can’t get back. He deserves so much more and so much better in every regard. :(
And in case anyone has forgotten:
“I’m a musician and I love writing music.”
“Music’s really important to me.”
“What would I like to achieve in 2018? Always a big question. Um, obviously my album will be out next year so….Honestly I’ve been working on this album for so long now and I’ve written so many songs for it, and I’m just really excited to get it out there, and hopefully it will be received well by the fans, so that’s what I hope to achieve.”
