the way that ratonhnhaké:ton keeps working with haytham even though he doesn't agree with how haytham does almost anything, and even though haytham calls him a naive child at every opportunity. the way he doesn't shrug off haytham's hand on his shoulder like he does with anyone else he's not close to. the way he spent the last eight years focused on destroying the templar leaders, including grand master haytham, and then hopes there's a way to unite the assassins and the templars. the way achilles instantly knows this hope comes from meeting haytham. the way ratonhnhaké:ton only stops working with haytham when he finds out haytham was keeping things from him about the burning of his village and his mother's death. the way he said "oppose me and i will kill you" and still thought that with lee out of the way there may be some way to reconcile with haytham. the way he wanted to spare haytham until the end, but haytham gave him no choice. do you see what i'm saying

Ramblings: Chabot and Kapanen Injured; Update on Lehner; Sprong; Mrazek; Gallagher; Werenski – March 14
One big injury update from Wednesday was that Ottawa star defenceman Thomas Chabot has been diagnosed with a broken toe and is week-to-week. The team has 12 games left and were this any other organization, I would say that rushing back the franchise cornerstone player from a broken bone in a completely lost season so he can suit up with an AHL roster isn’t possible. But this is Ottawa, so whatever the worst possible option is, it’s definitely on the table.
Meanwhile, Cody Ceci and Dylan Demelo are going to get as much ice time as they can handle. Just be wary in leagues counting plus/minus.
*
Kasperi Kapanen missed Toronto’s last game, being scratched late in the day. Word came from the team today that Kapanen has been diagnosed with a concussion and, as with all concussions, there is no timeline for return.
Kapanen had been enjoying a breakout season with 19 goals and 42 points in 68 games.
This would be the time to run to the waiver wire and grab William Nylander if he’s available. He’s widely owned on ESPN but is still available in over half of Yahoo! leagues. We’d like him to have those top PP minutes but getting secondary time while skating on a line with Auston Matthews is too good to pass up.
*
Good news for the Minnesota Wild and their fans (and fantasy owners) as Matt Dumba was skating on his own before practice on Wednesday. He’s recovering from surgery on a pectoral muscle and we still don’t know when, or if, he’ll be back this season.
For more good news, Luke Kunin was also skating for the Wild. He should return to the team in short order.
*
The Islanders are expecting Robin Lehner to return to the crease very soon for the team. Word is he could even start Thursday night, though Barry Trotz wouldn’t full commit to that. It seems he should return on Saturday night on the road.
*
Gary Bettman upheld the two-game suspension of Flyers forward Jakub Voracek. The winger had appealed his suspension, hoping to get it reduced to just a single contest. He will be out for Thursday night’s game against Washington but will be available for Friday night’s matchup in Toronto. In the meantime, expect the Flyers lines to stay the same, which means Nolan Patrick centering the second line.
*
St. Louis starts a three-game Eastern swing on Thursday night in Ottawa and will be joined on the trip by David Perron. Whether he plays or not is another matter entirely as he continues to recover from his latest concussion. That he’s on the trip at all is a good sign, though. Let’s just hope these issues don’t linger for him.
*
Just want to say that I’m really, really excited for the potential second round matchups in the West. Two of Calgary/San Jose/Vegas in one matchup and potentially a Nashville/Winnipeg redux in the other? Oh yeah, sign me up.
*
It’s probably worth noting that Daniel Sprong is on a three-game goal scoring streak for the Ducks. In 37 games with Anaheim, the 21-year old winger has 12 goals while playing just 13:31 per game. He’s also shooting a very reasonable 14.3 percent in the meantime. He has a very healthy 15.9 shot attempts per 60 minutes at five-on-five and while his five-on-five shooting percentage is a bit high, it’s nothing some additional ice time next year can’t help offset. It’s still just 37 games but considering the awful scoring environment of the Ducks, it’s impressive. It at least gives hope that he can be the 25-goal scorer a lot of people expected him to be. He’s a name to keep in mind for deeper leagues next year.
One player heating up for the Ducks? Jakob Silfverberg. You can look at hot/cold trends on Dobber Tools here.
*
Speaking of hot streaks, Petr Mrazek has been one of the most valuable goalies in fantasy over the last month. It’s helped boost his overall save percentage to .908, just behind names like Pekka Rinne, Braden Holtby, and Connor Hellebuyck. He doesn’t need to be a .940 goalie for the Hurricanes to win games, but even if he can just be league average it’ll be a huge boost to the team. His recent play has likely earned him a contract next year.
With Scott Darling buried, Curtis McElhinney also on a one-year deal, and Alex Nedeljkovic not earning the trust of the franchise yet, there’s a pretty clear path for Mrazek to be at least the 1A or 1B goalie for the Hurricanes in 2019-20. They’re one of the best young teams in the NHL and only getting better. Mrazek’s fantasy outlook is a lot brighter than it was before the All-Star break.
*
I shut off the Blackhawks-Leafs game off when Chicago made it 5-0 midway through the second period. At that point, Brendan Perlini had three points (1-2), Alex DeBrincat had a goal, Dylan Strome had two assists, and Brandon Saad had one of each. I had to turn it back on when it got to 5-3 but Chicago managed to skate away with the 5-4 victory. The win brings Chicago within four points of the final wildcard in the West.
Corey Crawford left after the second period with an illness, and Collin Delia faced 30 shots in the final frame alone.
Not for nothing, but the Blackhawks have been much better of late. The team is mid-pack in shot share since the All-Star break where they had been toiling at the bottom of the league through the first half of the season. They’re not a great team, but they’re much better than they were three months ago.
*
Update on the late games in the morning.
*
You know who doesn’t get the respect he deserves? Brendan Gallagher. Here are his ranks league-wide among 262 forwards with 2000+ minutes at five-on-five since the start of the 2016-17 season:
Goals/60 minutes – 9th
Points/60 minutes – T-49th with James van Riemsdyk, Jonathan Marchessault, Nino Niederreiter, Patrice Bergeron, and Blake Wheeler
Primary Points/60 minutes – T-35th with Jason Zucker, Mark Scheifele, Logan Couture, and Taylor Hall
Relative adjusted shot share: 9th sandwiched between Matt Barzal and Matthew Tkachuk
Relative goal share: 61st sandwiched between Marchessault and Jeff Skinner
Relative expected goal share impact: 11th between Zucker and Gustav Nyquist
No matter what way this is cut or sliced, Gallagher is a top line winger. He now has back-to-back 30-goal seasons and he’s done so while earning less ice time per game this year (16:27) than he did four years ago (16:35 in 2014-15). Imagine the level of fantasy performance he could give in everything from points to shots to hits if he were playing 18-19 minutes a night. There’s the question of optimizing ice time levels for performance but I have to imagine he can handle an extra minute or two per night.
I really do hope that Gallagher earns that extra ice time at some point. He is very much capable of achieving the level of production of, say, Matthew Tkachuk were he earning a minute or two extra per night and (hopefully) a very good young centre in Jesperi Kotkaniemi. There are a lot of bridges to cross before we get there so maybe we never do. All the same, even with just 16:30 per night, Gallagher is one of the most valuable skaters in multi-cat leagues.
*
Lost in that 11-goal game between Boston and Columbus a couple nights ago was Zach Werenski’s four-point game. Those four points pushed Werenski past the 120-point mark for his career. Why is that important? Well:
The only defencemen this century with 120+ points in their age 19-21 seasons: Erik Karlsson (149) Drew Doughty (126) Zach Werenski (124 and counting) https://t.co/o4rKg6Uqe5
— Michael Clifford (@SlimCliffy) March 13, 2019
Let’s look at this from another angle:
The only defencemen to ever crack 10 goals and 20 assists in each of their age-19, 20, and 21 seasons: Orr Bourque Murphy Stevens Housley Werenskihttps://t.co/m3NV3jE5CI
— Michael Clifford (@SlimCliffy) March 13, 2019
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that Werenski is still just 21 years old. At this point he feels like a veteran player and yet he’s still younger than Thomas Chabot (yes, really). Werenski is the youngest defenceman in the NHL with 40 points this season, and it’s the second time in his career he’s cracked 40 points, the first time being two years ago. It doesn’t matter how it’s cut or sliced, what Werenski is accomplishing is quite literally historic.
Let’s run a quick comparison, shall we?
Below is how Werenski compares to Karlsson over the last three years in things like zone entries, zone exits, shot assists (passes leading to shots), and individual shots. We can see that Werenski lags behind Karlsson a little in most categories, but they’re close:
It’s important to keep in mind that these are Karlsson’s prime years while Werenski is still a few years away from his. If this is how the Blue Jackets blue liner performs before he hits his prime, what will he look like in, say, 2021-22?
He’s just starting to scratch the surface. Werenski has lost power play time to Seth Jones over the last couple seasons despite the fact that the Jackets have typically scored much more with Werenski on the ice for power plays than Jones. That includes when splitting their time on the top unit; the Jackets score much more with Cam Atkinson and Werenski on the ice than Cam Atkinson and Jones. For a team that’s struggled so mightily with the power play over the last three years, you’d think they would favour the defenceman who’s been on the ice for more PP goals per minute, but I digress.
What makes Werenski so fascinating from a fantasy perspective is, as mentioned above, really just starting to find his footing in the NHL. He’s also producing at these elite levels despite not getting massive amount of ice time; unlike, say, Rasmus Ristolainen, the Columbus rearguard is not a product of simply being stuffed with 26 minutes a night. He’s doing everything we want to see at a micro level to produce like a top fantasy option at the macro level.
It’s only fair to wonder what his production will look like once he A) hits his prime and, B) gets a boatload of minutes including top PP time. He’s firmly in the group of elite young defencemen in the NHL like Chabot, Heiskanen, and Dahlin, and that group will dominate the Norris conversation from 2021 and beyond.
Now would be the time to inquire on Werenski’s price in a trade. If he can be acquired as a 40-point defenceman, I think there is a lot of profit to be had in the years to come.

21 Fantasy Hockey Rambles
Every Sunday, we'll share 21 Fantasy Rambles — formerly titled 20 Fantasy Thoughts — from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's ‘Daily Ramblings’.
Writers: Michael Clifford, Ian Gooding, Cam Robinson, and Dobber
  1. After Auston Matthews scored his 100th goal, there were many mentions from various media about how few games he was able to complete that milestone in (187). However, does Matthews become a Band-Aid Boy Trainee this offseason? He lost 20 games to injury last season and 14 this season after playing a full 82 games in his first season. He’s got a long ways to go before he’s as notorious for injuries as Evgeni Malkin, but I’ll acknowledge that it’s something to keep an eye on.
Back to the other side of the coin: Since his rookie 2016-17 season, Matthews has the fifth-highest goal total (101) among all players. Among the four players ahead of him, only Alex Ovechkin has a higher goals-per-game total than Matthews, and the margin is miniscule. Matthews’ fantasy value will be elite if he can stay healthy. (feb16)
  2. There were some murmurs that Alexis Lafrenière, the uber 2020 prospect, might be going pro next year in Europe, taking the same route that Auston Matthews did prior to being drafted. That was very quickly put to rest by the future star’s agency.
Not that it’s hugely relevant for us fantasy-wise, but I always wonder about development for a player like this. Would it be better for a supremely talented player to go overseas for a season rather than spend it in junior hockey? Would it make him better prepared for his first season in the NHL? I don’t have an answer and I’m not sure there’s a concrete answer one way or another. I just think it’s an interesting discussion. (feb12)
  3. Hawks’ Dylan Strome has 18 points in his last 12 games and his 32 points in 35 games since the trade sits amongst the top-45 in the league over that span.
Imagine my surprise when a 21-year-old with exceptional pedigree blossoms in a new environment with more exposure to talented players and offensive situations. Shocking stuff. (feb13)
Still, this is just a warning. The points so far are largely the result of a percentage bender and not solid play-driving. There are still some things to like here; his passing metrics are solid and his unit with recent linemates Alex DeBrincat and Dominik Kahun have shown promise in a small sample of a sheltered role. Just be wary that the Blackhawks suddenly found a 70-point center to play behind Jonathan Toews, though. I’m skeptical. (feb12)
  4. For his part, Kahun has also been brought along beautifully, being given steady ice time. Not on the top line, but always with talent and without really being put in the doghouse despite stretches of lesser production. And now it’s really paying off. He has nine points in the last seven games. (feb11)
  5. New Oiler Sam Gagner got to Brooklyn in time for Saturday’s game against the Islanders. In case you were wondering if he would immediately be placed on the Connor McDavid line, there was no such luck. He started the game on a line with Tobias Rieder and Colby Cave but later Cave was swapped for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Gagner played just under ten minutes while receiving second-unit power-play time.
By the way, Jesse Puljujarvi was a healthy scratch for this game. Get him to the AHL. (feb17)
  6. I always liked Shea Theodore. I thought his small samples showed well in Anaheim and just watching him play, you saw a defenceman who could skate and pass out of danger and would always look for an offensive opportunity. That kind of cooled off in Vegas’s inaugural season (remember when he started the year in the AHL?) but is back in full force this season.
Defensively there are still issues, but those aren’t huge concerns for us fantasy-wise as long as it doesn’t lead to a loss in ice time.
Theodore’s ability to drive offense cannot be overstated. For example: among 132 defensemen with 700 five-on-five minutes this year, he’s fifth in driving shot attempts for his team relative to his teammates. The four guys ahead of him: Dougie Hamilton, Thomas Chabot, Erik Karlsson, and Brent Burns. That’s pretty good company.
This is a very, very good offensive talent. His issue for fantasy is playing enough minutes to really be a top-tier talent. If he ever starts to earn more minutes, there is a lot of upside beyond 40 points. (feb14)
  7. I’ve touched on Thomas Chabot before and just a cursory search of ‘Thomas Chabot’ here at Dobber will reveal a lot more on Chabot from this season. I won’t feed a fed horse here so I’ll let most of what I’ve written stand.
What I will say is that there is still some work to do defensively. Like Theodore, he’ll need to be better defensively to really earn a lot of minutes. With that said, if Cody Ceci doesn’t return next season, there really isn’t much in Ottawa for coach Guy Boucher to lean on minutes-wise. It’s not like in Vegas where if Theodore isn’t performing, the coach can turn to Colin Miller, or Nate Schmidt, or even Brayden McNabb. In Ottawa, they turn to… Christian Wolanin? Ben Harpur? Mark Borowiecki? It’s basically Dylan DeMelo and that’s it.
Chabot has the look of a defenseman you build a franchise around. He’s still just 22 and has just over 100 NHL games under his belt. This team is rebuilding but having someone like Chabot is nearly as good a start as a general manager can hope for. (feb14)
  8. Overall, the Canes have had great goaltending from the Petr Mrazek / Curtis McElhinney tandem recently, allowing just five goals over their last five games.
Mrazek and McElhinney are both in the top 15 in goals-against average among goalies that have played at least 20 games, so maybe they could even be considered a poor man’s Islanders’ tandem (as weird as that may sound). (feb17)
  9. Nino Niederreiter has eight goals and 12 points in 13 games since joining the Hurricanes. El Nino had scored just nine goals in 46 games for the Wild before that.
A regression will come, but sometimes a trade can perform wonders for a player’s value. Having a playmaker as skilled as Sebastian Aho has helped, as Niederreiter’s shots-per-game total has doubled since the trade (3.83 SOG/GP in Carolina before Saturday’s game vs. 1.76 SOG/GP in Minnesota). (feb16)
  10. BTW, if you’re the Hurricanes and currently battling for the last playoff spot in the East, should you really trade Micheal Ferland? Isn’t he the kind of player that you need down the stretch and into the playoffs, should you make it there? With his 16th goal of the season on Saturday, Ferland has five points in his last three games. (feb17)
  11. Dustin Byfuglien was out of the Jets’ lineup on Saturday because of a lower-body injury.  Even though Big Buff is still a beast out there, I’ve predicted over the last couple seasons that the wear and tear of his physical game would catch up to him. Now we’re seeing signs of that, as the now 33-year-old blueliner has already missed 22 games and counting this season.
Whenever Byfuglien has been out of the lineup, Josh Morrissey has been considered the Jets’ defenseman to start in your lineup. Morrissey logged nearly 25 minutes on Saturday. (feb17)
  12. Could the Bruins’ goalie situation be a timeshare again? Well… they have played three back-to-backs in the past week and a half, but Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak have alternated over the last seven games. For more goalie starts, don’t forget to check out Goalie Post. (feb16)
  13. I forgot to mention this during my Randy Carlyle eulogy. One contract that Bob Murray probably wishes he could have back is Ryan Kesler’s. The latter has three more seasons after this one at nearly $7 million per, and he has put up an anemic six points in 49 games.
Kesler already had a ton of wear and tear when he signed that extension with the Ducks, and they managed to get one good year out of that contract (two good years with the Ducks before that). I can’t see this contract lasting until the end. (feb16)
  14. Andreas Athanasiou has his first 20-goal season with more goals to come. He hasn’t been blessed with Detroit’s top forwards as linemates (Dylan Larkin immediately comes to mind), but he’s using his speed to make the most of what he has been given.
If his production is a surprise to you, keep in mind that this is his fourth season. With his skill, I can’t help but think there’s more to come. (feb15)
  15. Jordan Binnington has now won seven games in a row, while the Blues as a team have won nine in a row. Coach Craig Berube and Binnington have not only rescued the Blues’ season, but they are now lifting the Blues above the pile of struggling teams that are still within shouting distance of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. (feb15)
16. Meanwhile, Vladimir Tarasenko is now riding an 11-game point streak and has 10 points (6g-4a) over his last four games. His season has turned around completely just as the Blues’ season has, which is why it's wise not to write off a stud when all hope seems lost (Patrik Laine owners, are you paying attention?) I was hoping that Berube would try Tarasenko with Ryan O’Reilly, which has turned out to be beneficial for Tarasenko, O’Reilly, and Brayden Schenn. (feb15)
  17. Nikita Kucherov is up to 94 points in just 59 games. He’s clicking away at a 1.59 point-per-game pace. No one has achieved that feat in a full season since Joe Thornton threw down a 125 pointer in 2005-06.
Meanwhile, teammate, Brayden Point has chipped in with 75 points in 58 games. Thank goodness Tampa Bay is in a no-tax state. That’s the only reason the Bolts will keep him at a reasonable number as an RFA this summer. (feb13)
  18. Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad has 13 goals in his last 12 games and 25 on the season – two shy of his career-high mark set last season. The shooting percentage (15.0%) is due for a slight dip, but his metrics appear stable. The 25-year-old looks every bit the part of No.1 center on Broadway. Will people believe it heading into drafts next season? I’m guessing no. (feb13)
  19. Nate Thompson and a fifth-round pick were traded to Montreal in exchange for a fourth-round pick this past week. There’s no fantasy relevance here whatsoever but it’s always nice to see general manager Marc Bergevin in the midst of his annual Fourth Line Bonanza. One of these seasons, he’ll acquire useful players at the Trade Deadline (Phillip Danault excepted) and we’ll all rejoice. (feb12)
  20. Viktor Arvidsson is shooting for a Cy Young Award with 26 goals and eight assists. Generally speaking, he’s a 50-50 goal/assist distribution player and while his goals are a tad high, his assists are far too low. I think he has another gear that can push him above 80 points if he can play a full season. (feb11)
  21. Frank Vatrano has 19 goals on the season and has been skating alongside Vincent Trocheck and Jonathan Huberdeau, so strike while the iron is hot.
Provided he stays healthy, which is a big drawback with him, he has enough talent to continue putting up decent points.
The Panthers have a nice distribution of offense now thanks to Derick Brassard up on the top line with Aleksander Barkov and Evgenii Dadonov, and a third line of Henrik Borgstrom, Mike Hoffman and Riley Sheahan. (feb11)
Have a good week, folks!!

Ramblings: Faulk/Chychrun Shutdown; Blues Hurt Playoff Chances; Reviewing Misses – April 5
Fantasy owners got a little scare the other night when Alex Ovechkin went crashing hard into the boards and was slow to get off the ice. He took a maintenance on Wednesday and there’s no certainty he’ll play on Thursday. With playoffs, and playoff drafts, a week away, fantasy owners have to keep this nagging injury in the back of their mind. It may be nothing, it may be something. We’ll have a few more days to figure this out
*
It looks like Erik Karlsson may be done for the year. Obviously, with the family issues he’s had off the ice, he hasn’t been traveling with the team. He didn’t play Wednesday in Buffalo and the team has two road games left, one in Pittsburgh and one in Boston. Nothing is official yet.
*
Justin Faulk has officially been shutdown for the balance of the season. Jaccob Slavin has been taking the top PP minutes so he’s the guy to add for their final couple games if you need a Hail Mary.
*
Another defenceman, Jakob Chychrun, has also been shutdown for the year with a lower-body injury. There’s nothing to expand on yet, I just hope nagging injuries aren’t something that plague him as he starts his career. He’s looked very good as a teenager for the Coyotes and could be a cornerstone for them for years to come.
*
Josh Anderson took part in a full practice for the Jackets on Wednesday, indicating he’s closing in on a return to the lineup. They might look to get him in for one game before playoff starts. If you’re targeting Blue Jackets in playoff pools, don’t forget to add him to the list though I doubt he’ll be back on the top line.
*
Marian Gaborik is off to see a back specialist. I’m not sure he’ll ever have much fantasy value again but it’s just a shame to think what could have been if he had stayed healthy his entire career. He’s one of just six forwards with 400 goals and 400 assists this century, and at least four of the others are future Hall of Famers.
*
The Blues went into Wednesday night with a game in hand on the Avalanche. They had a 3-1 lead midway through the second period and lost in regulation as Duncan Keith scored with 8.5 seconds left for the 4-3 win. It was a gutting loss for St. Louis’ playoff hopes as they’ll now need some help and no longer control their own destiny.
The St. Louis regulation loss also locks the Kings into a playoff spot.
Alex DeBrincat scored to tie the game in third period, his 28th of the season. Were it not for names like Barzal, McAvoy, Boeser, and Keller, DeBrincat would be getting a lot more press for the rookie season he’s having. He’s doing this all while playing fewer than 15 minutes a night. Not too shabby.
That goal was just Duncan Keith’s second of the season. With the three shots and the goal he had last night his shooting percentage on the season is now up to… 1.1 percent!
*
Alex Nylander made his season debut Wednesday night as the Sabres closed out their home schedule. He played a little over 12 minutes and was largely not noticeable. I guess that means he wasn’t doing anything poorly, either?
Ryan O’Reilly scored for the Sabres in their loss and is now one point shy of 60 on the season. Doesn’t feel like it, does it? He also has at least 55 points in six straight 82-game seasons. I wonder if a healthy season from Jack Eichel and Casey Mittelstadt (should they use him as a centre) means fewer minutes next year for O’Reilly.
With a goal and an assist in the win, Ryan Dzingel is now one point shy of 40 on the season.
*
There wasn’t a lot in the way of games to discuss from Wednesday night so I figured it was a good time for reflection on the fantasy season that has nearly wrapped up. More specifically, it’s a good time so admit some mistakes.
When you rank over 300 players a season, you’re going to be wrong. Sometimes by a little, sometimes by a lot. I thought it would be worth going over some of the players I missed on significantly, why I missed on them, and how it can help in the future. I won’t even bother going into Mathew Barzal; I’d like to meet the person that had him paced out for a 70-point season, let alone cruising beyond 80 points.
Brock Boeser
Going into the season the hype on Boeser was that he was probably the best pure shooter the Canucks had. To me, that smelled of faint praise for a team that wouldn’t sniff the playoffs. Not only was the expectation that Vancouver would be a low-scoring team, but that Boeser wouldn’t even start the year on the roster. They are, and he didn’t.
Of course, the mistake here is that ignoring individual talent can lead to disaster, especially when the player comes very cheap at the draft table; Boeser’s ADP across the Big Three sites was in the same range as Vadim Shipachyov, Teemu Pulkkinen, Connor Brown, and Chris Kunitz. At that level, betting on talent is often a good bet to make.
Injury was the only thing that kept Boeser from a truly superlative fantasy performance and he still managed 29 goals and 55 points, which is a very good season in and of itself. This was a huge miss on my part. These are the types of players fantasy owners should take a chance on late in drafts. He certainly won’t come at that level of discount next season.
  Brayden Point
The other huge miss for me was Tampa Bay’s outstanding second-year centre.
Point was coming off a 2016-17 season that saw 40 points in 68 games as a rookie. Pretty good! But it was also a season where Steven Stamkos missed most of the year and Tyler Johnson missed about 20 percent of it. With those two expected back for the entire 2017-18 season, I figured Point would be the third-line centre with sparse power-play time. While he didn’t get much top power-play minutes, it didn’t really matter.
The top-line duo of Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov remained together for most of the year but Point played himself ahead of Johnson very early on. I thought last year’s ice time was about as good as it could get for the 21-year old but, at time of writing, he’s averaging 19:40 per game. He’s earning more five-on-five ice time this year with a healthy lineup than he did last year with all the injuries. He turned that into a 30/30 season, and a very nice return on his ADP (he went even later than Boeser).
His five-on-five shooting percentage is a bit high and that’ll come down next year but even at a depressed rate, he probably still scores around 25 goals and that’s more than enough for where he was drafted in September. My mistake was discounting his ability to play himself ahead of other established players which, again, is a bet to make at an ADP that was so low.
  Claude Giroux
Oh boy.
After declining goal, assist, and point totals for every season beginning in 2013-14 through 2016-17, I found it hard to buy into a rebound for Giroux. The Flyers were going into 2017-18 with largely the same roster save for Brayden Schenn, so taking him among the top-75 players off the board when he could have been had in the same range as guys like Sean Monahan and John Klingberg didn’t make a lot of sense to me.
All Giroux did this year was set a career-high in goals, assists, and plus/minus (for those in league who count it).
This one I’m not as a mad over as the previous two forwards. His three-year shooting percentage was 8.5 percent; it’s 16.1 percent as of early Wednesday night. That mark is a career-high, and the first time he’s been above 12.6 percent since 2010-11. At five-on-five, he’s shooting 16.1 percent after a previous career-high of 12.1 percent nearly a decade ago. He’s not shooting nearly as much as he was a few years ago and that should be concerning for next season.
I think this is a case where I discounted his potential line mates; Jakub Voracek hasn’t been a big goal scorer in years, Wayne Simmonds is largely a power-play guy, I didn’t think Travis Konecny would have the season he’s having, and I also wasn’t expecting him to be Sean Couturier’s winger all year.
The mistake I made here was completely writing off a player who isn’t really that old yet and has a long history of very solid production. If I had the ability to draft all over again, I’d get some exposure to him rather than just outright avoid him. I suppose that’s the lesson here: if you do a lot of drafts, diversifying is a good idea. Giroux was one of those draft picks who won people their leagues.
  Victor Hedman
Listen, we all have regrets. This… this is one is a big regret.
Our Dobber preseason panel had a section on guys we expected to disappoint. We were asked to select three. Two of mine were Joe Pavelski and Leon Draisaitl (I feel good about those). The third was Victor Hedman. As I write this, there’s a good chance he’s the top-rated defenceman in your league. That would depend on league settings, but regardless of your fantasy league, there’s no way he was a flop.
My issue in the preseason revolved around the power play. I thought with everyone healthy that there would be a good chance they’d run two even power-play units, splitting up Stamkos and Kucherov, and the Stamkos unit likely run by Anton Stralman. Were they to have split up their abundance of offensive talent into two units, it would cut significantly into the 33 power-play points Hedman had in 2016-17, and thus make him a player to avoid in drafts for 2017-18.
Let’s just say it didn’t quite work out like that.
For the majority of the season, the top unit featured all three of Stamkos, Kucherov, and Hedman, and the result has been Tampa Bay being ranked fourth in goals per 60 minutes while on the man advantage. Hedman’s PP production has taken a bit of a hit (26 points down from the 33 he had last year), but it’s not nearly as much as I expected.
The lesson here would be that sometimes not to over-think things. Victor Hedman went into 2017-18 as a defenceman averaging 60 points per 82 games over the previous four seasons, the Lightning were healthy and loaded with offence, and he was going to be playing a lot of minutes for them. Sometimes the obvious play is obvious for a reason, and I think I went looking for an issue where we didn’t have evidence one existed.
  All the Golden Knights
I don’t think there’s much to go into here. I mean, 75 points (so far) from Jonathan Marchessault, 43 goals (so far) for William Karlsson, a 40-point season for Colin Miller, and career-best ratios from Marc-Andre Fleury. I mean, what?
There are some players we could expect solid seasons from like the acquisitions from Florida, maybe Fleury returning to form, James Neal having a healthy amount of goals? That’s about it. I missed on a lot of the Golden Knights but I feel like I’m not the only one. If you’re one of the people who believed they could have any kind of season close to this, please hit up the comments.

Unwrapping Six Underrated Performers
Happy Holidays to all my North American counterparts! As I prepare to gorge myself on Christmas ham and knock back way too many Molson products let’s look at some fantasy assets that aren’t receiving the love they deserve for their contributions to both their actual real life squads and the fantasy teams where they’re rostered. Some of these names are more familiar and some have just come up on the radar in 2017-18 showing what they may be able to provide you the fantasy manager in years to come. If you have followed these writings throughout time you may know that I make it my job to give love to guys who really need more of it a la James van Riemsdyk.
  Yanni Gourde
Honestly, I knew not a thing about Gourde prior to this season but boy do I love an undrafted success story anytime they arise. What is it with high scoring players in the QMJHL sometimes not being taken seriously? Anyone remember the 2006 draft when Bobby Clarke forgot Claude Giroux’s name at the podium? Here’s that for your viewing pleasure…
  {youtube}kcmdnFvM4w8{/youtube}
Getting back to Gourde, in his final two seasons with the Victoriaville Tigres he scored 192 points in 136 games played. 124 of those points alone came in 2011-12 in 68 games played! Though his scoring translation took a few seasons after the completion of his junior career, eventually while part of the Tampa Bay Lightning affiliated Syracuse Crunch he turned it on starting in 2014-15. With 149 points in 197 games played from 2014-17 in the AHL, Gourde seemingly had what it takes to be a difference maker in the NHL. Nine points in his first 22 games in the NHL across two seasons suggested his abilities but 2017-18 has been his coming out party with him currently on pace for a 25-goal, 58-point season. With four goals and three assists in his past seven games played Gourde’s scoring capabilities are seemingly once again translating at the highest level.
Now 26 years of age Gourde is well in his prime and can be viewed somewhat differently than your typical newbie to the league because of his age. More physically and mentally developed alongside playing on a stacked Lightning squad, Gourde is starting to look a lot like a Brayden Point story. Not receiving top line minutes nor primary power play time it is easy to forget about Gourde with the arsenal of weapons on this team. Because of said arsenal it is entirely reasonable to expect him to maintain his scoring pace as he will never see top defensive pairs that are matching up with the top two lines every time. Boasting a 0.69 point-per-game pace in the second quarter through 13 games if you’re in need of some forward assistance give this guy a go.
  Micheal Ferland
Ferland is going to contend for the hockey “Cy Young” award with a paltry showing in the assist department but he is on pace for 31 goals and is not receiving the exposure he should cast in the shadow of his more pedigree linemates Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau. A relative nobody before the current campaign he is already two goals away from his total 15 scored in 76 games played last season. Outside of goals Ferland also holds value in leagues counting hits with 60 total so far putting him on pace for 143 by season’s end. His five power-play points are all goals, but again if you are in a league that differentiates between power play goals and assists he is on pace for 12.
Ferland has been lined up with Monahan and Gaudreau 90.5% of the time this season by Glen Gulutzan. You really cannot have a more assured deployment in hockey, only Mike Babcock rivals that type of linemate consistency. There is no denying Ferland’s fantasy relevance would cascade off a cliff if removed from the top line but that percentage tells us it’s a rare occurrence. Seeing time on the second power play coupled with his even strength deployment makes Ferland an option that should be taken more seriously.
  Mathieu Perreault
Had Perreault never gone down to injury early on in the season the outlook for the Winnipeg Jets might’ve been very different. Kyle Connor’s arrival/emergence directly correlates to Perreault’s injury with him being called up to fill the void. As most of us know Connor seized the opportunity afforded to him with top line and top power play duty. Kudos to him on cementing his place alongside Mark Schiefele and Blake Wheeler at even strength but what’s unfortunate is how everyone has seemingly forgotten about Perreault’s production both before and after his injury.
In 19 games since his return from injury Perreault has racked up eight goals and eight assists. Not once in this stretch has he so much as even sniffed top six deployment. Like many teams, beyond the top two lines there is a significant drop-off in offensive ability when it comes to the bottom six. Perreault is playing with the likes of Matt Hendricks and Joel Armia these days, two players nobody will ever confuse for offensive dynamos. Yet despite this undesirable deployment Perreault is one of the best if not the best pts/60 player in the league (4.0). In a nutshell he is by a landslide the best fourth line player in the game today. For any league where time on ice is not counted he is an absolute must own while he is producing in the manner he is. Even if time on ice has to be accounted for, at this point he is worth the hit in this category as he provides consistent offense and his current pace of 57 points in 69 games played barring injury is nothing to laugh about; that is serious production. Any and all who drafted him kind of sort of despise Kye Connor (yours truly) but at least Perreault is still finding a way to be relevant and then some.
  Danton Heinen
Another young player a la Gourde who I did not know much anything about prior to this season, Heinen is giving Bruins fans some serious excitement for the future alongside their other young guns. At the tender age of 22 Heinen has been a jack of all trades for head coach Bruce Cassidy. Regardless of the line he has been rolled out on he has been able to maintain consistent production and currently is on pace for a 22-goal, 61-point campaign. Quite the stat line for someone who quintessentially only finds himself in the NHL currently because of the injury torrent for the Bruins early on. Nonetheless Heinen has made the most of his opportunity since his call up in mid-October and it’s time people start taking more notice.
Though his overall shooting percentage is high at 16%, even with some goal scoring regression he would still be on pace for impressive numbers by season’s end. Boasting an impressive 55.25 CF%            Heinen and Co. are really driving play when deployed on the ice. As stated earlier I am no expert on this kid but the numbers do not lie. Top six or bottom six this kid is producing solid offensive numbers so far throughout 28 games played and has every right to be rostered full-time. Once upon a time names like Daniel Paille were the face of the Bruins bottom-six but these days it looks like that is Heinen’s throne now.
  Jake Muzzin
I feel everyone forgot about poor Jake Muzzin after a forgettable 2016-17 campaign. Two straight 40-point seasons in 2014-15/2015-16 were completely left in the rearview mirror after last year’s 28-point showing for Muzzin. But the past is the past and Muzzin the multi-cat beast is back in force. After four straight seasons with a PDO below 1000, 2017-18 sees him rocking a robust 1026 currently. Adversely his cf% is the lowest it’s been in several seasons but still remains above 50%. No stopping the production though as he has amassed 20 points in 35 games so far with 88 hits and 74 blocks. Pro-rate this over a full 82-game schedule and Muzzin is on pace for a seven goal, 46-point, 204-hit, 171-block season.
Riding shotgun with Drew Doughty a majority of the time at even strength and always together on the primary power play unit Muzzin is providing incredible value. Not one aspect of his stat line across all categories would negatively impact your squad and the best thing about him is that nobody talks about him. Forever in Doughty’s shadow he will never ever receive the love he should which makes him a desirable draft target year in and year out. Kudos to John Stevens for revitalizing this team’s offense all the while not abandoning their ability to prevent goals. It would certainly seem a regime change has reinvigorated this roster from the top down and Muzzin is prospering immensely.
  Colin Miller
The Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers could only dream of the talent afforded to the Las Vegas Golden Knights in their expansion draft. Though nobody in their right mind could’ve ever anticipated the torrid start for them in their inaugural season there’s no doubt the pedigree of talent on this squad is far beyond the likes of expansion teams of the nineties. One of many players contributing to their success is Colin Miller on the back end. Miller possesses a booming slapshot, but his setup skills have been his primary source of points. On pace for a 12-goal, 47-point showing in 2017-18 this guy is providing barn burner value for someone who was not even drafted in a vast majority of 8 to 12-team leagues.
Though he does not receive top pair minutes on the blue line Miller is turning into a multi-cat asset as to go with his impressive points pace he is also on track for 65 PIM, 181 shots, 137 hits and 17 PPP. Miller starts 60% of his shifts in the offensive zone and his overall shooting percentage is of no cause for regression concerns sitting at 6.8% currently. Not to say the Golden Knights are ready to contend for a Stanley Cup but at this point in the season we have to at least somewhat buy into the notion that this team has the ability to give any team a run for its money any given night. With 19 points in 33 games played Miller’s playing his part in the success and should provide a steady source of points barring injury the rest of the way.
