Kurt Fashion Retrospective s1
So I did all the posts of every Kurt outfit (link to masterpost) and decided I’d do a bit of a final thoughts on the evolution. Ended up having too many thoughts so here’s just s1 oops
Season 1: Lowkey this had some of the more Iconic Kurt looks, def where his fashion was at its most Extra. It’s been stated (within show, by cast/crew) that fashion is a sort of armor for Kurt and I see that. There’s lots more layers and, to my annoyance, stupid pants that never fit him. This is def before the ‘pants so tight you can see his thoughts’ (lol I love Chris).
This season is also where he’s more androgynous, esp first half of the season. Mainly with the longer sweaters. I will note that for all the jokes, he never wears what could actually be considered ‘girls’ clothes. Besides the gaga outfit, there’s not much sparkles, feathers, barely any pink. I’ve found even here Kurt has specific modes of fashion: either some variation of a suit or a very comfy sweater. Lots of buttondowns, sometimes a bowtie.
The sweaters are where the androgyny comes in as they’re ‘feminine’ but not really that girly? Kurt is one to experiment with fashion and it’s definitely a lot for Ohio in the 2000s, but his fashion is definitely more masculine. There are throwaway lines about him wearing a corset to class (so mad we never saw this) or having a tiara collection? But those seem more for the jokes because he never even wears jewelry beyond a brooch. There was the one scene in Bad Reputation where he wears a kilt but first off, he rocks it, and second it’s a kilt which is technically ‘masculine’ and he pairs it with a buttondown and bowtie so he’s clearly not aiming for a fem look.
I’ll go more into this in s3 with the Unicorn thing, but Kurt being gay doesn’t make him girly? First off, he’s gay cuz he likes boys the rest is just other aspects of his personality. And still, besides the lines, Kurt’s fashion def seems more inspired by old Hollywood (we later learn of Judy Garland as an influence) and he seems much more comfortable in a nice suit than a dress.
But ofc, Kurt refuses to be boring so if he’s going to wear something it should have personality. And esp as this first season he’s still building his confidence, he lets his clothes speak for him so we get a lot more of the ‘outrageous’ looks.
To finish off, some selected looks. For my least fav:

I love his white pants but oof the shirt, oof the hat...
As for my favs...

Aside from his rockin boots, I love this hoodie so much and so mad we never see it again

love this look. Has his layers, but little more risky with the elbows showing. Kinda looks like something s4 Kurt might wear...
