Best ball peen hammer for bashing and smashing metalwork
Tumblr media
Ball peen hammers are used to shape and hit metal.  The best ball peen hammers are debated to have either a steel or wooden handle. Some people like the feel of a wooden handle, as it takes impact well and it's lighter making it easier to use. The great thing about steel handle ball hammers is that they are much more durable and can be expected to last a lot longer. However, they are a little heavier. It really depends on what type of work you plan to be doing. If you are delicately shaping metalwork a wooden handle will give you more control and be a better choice. But for bashing and smashing, a steel handle can last a lot longer and still get the job done. People like to get a ball peen hammer set. It can be handy to have a variety of different sizes and weights for different types of jobs. If you were to only get one ball hammer though a 12-ounce hammer would be the best overall choice.

Introduction
Ball-peen hammers have a flat face and a ball or peen at the opposite end of the head. They are commonly used for metalwork, and are often referred to as “machinist’s hammers”. The heads of most ball hammers are harder than the heads of claw hammers. This makes them less prone to chipping, which is a fairly common occurrence with many hammers.  Ball-peen hammers were traditionally used for riveting. Metalworkers first used the flat side of the head to drive the nail through. The ball end was then used to “peen over” the other end of the rivet. They can also be used to fold over corners of sheet metal after cutting with your best nibbler drill attachment. Although pneumatic rivet guns are more commonly used nowadays, ball-peen hammers are still used for peening and shaping metalwork. And are even used for some smaller metalworking jobs such as jewelry design, and model making. Key features Handle. The part of the hammer that you grip to swing it. Ball peen hammer handles are commonly made of wood, steel, or fiberglass. Grip. Usually made of rubber. This absorbs most of the shock of the impact and is most commonly used in steel hammers. Head. The part of the hammer that provides most of the weight of a strike. Face. The flat part of the hammer that comes in contact with the workpiece. Peen. The ball end opposite the face. This is used for riveting and peening work. Cheek. Holds the head together and is the primary point of contact between the head and the handle. Neck. Connects the head to the handle and provides balance. Eye. The part of the head that allows for the insertion of the wooden handle.
Ball-peen hammer size and weight for specific jobs
Ball-peen hammers come in various sizes and weights. Their flat faces are typically large enough to hammer chisel handles for punching work. The ball or peen side of the head is just large enough to round off the edges of rivets. Ball-peen hammers are ideally suited for making gaskets. For such applications, the ball face is used to tap around the edge of the gasket material. The peen end should, therefore, be large enough to effectively perforate the material.  Ball-peen hammer heads typically weigh four, eight, and 12 ounces. However, there are heads that can weigh as much as 32 ounces.  A heavy head comes in handy when you need to drive cold chisels and punchers. But if you are using your ball-peen hammer to shape metal, a lighter head is the better choice. You could scar or warp the material if your hammer’s head is too large or heavy. Conversely, a hammer with a small and light head will give you more control over shaping your metalwork.
What size ball-peen hammer do I need?
Ideally, you will want to have a ball pein hammer set with a good range of sizes to suit whatever job you are working on. Eight and 12-ounce hammers will probably get the most use among DIYers, but you may also find two- and four-ounce hammers useful on occasion. If you regularly do cold chisel or punching work, a dependable 12-ounce hammer could be the only tool you need.  If you can only get one ball-peen hammer, I recommend going for a 12-ounce model. This should provide the weight and power you need for most jobs. If you can afford to get two hammers, I strongly suggest adding a 16-ounce model for even more power, and a lighter one for your small detailed metalwork.
Wooden handle vs. Steel handle
Most ball-peen hammer handles are made of wood or steel. Each type of material has its benefits and drawbacks, and the choice depends on the application and personal preferences.  Wood is obviously lighter than steel. Hammers with wooden handles are better suited for delicate jobs. Wood also absorbs impact more effectively than steel, so you can work for longer periods with less pain and discomfort.   The main benefits of steel are strength and durability. With a steel-handled hammer, you can pound on almost anything without worrying about your hammer breaking apart. The downside is that much of the force of impact is transferred to your hand, wrist, and arm. This makes steel-handled hammers less than ideal for long hours of work, but better if you want a tool that lasts a lifetime.
Tumblr media
What about fiberglass handles?
If you’re thinking of getting a ball-peen hammer with a fiberglass handle, just don’t. Fiberglass can become brittle and break up over time, especially with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light. Fiberglass handles are also more difficult to replace than wooden handles, and can’t be modified to fit your grip. I strongly advise going for a wooden or steel-handled hammer instead of one with a fiberglass handle.
What is the best wood for a handle?
Hickory is the most commonly used type of wood for hammers. It is reasonably lightweight but strong and durable and can be modeled and shaped easily to conform to your grip. If you opt for a wooden-handled hammer because of its ability to absorb impact and recoil, it would be best to get one with a handle made of hickory.
Top ball-peen hammers
The Estwing 12-ounce ball peen hammer is forged from a single piece of steel, making it one of the most durable striking tools on the market. It is well-equipped to handle any task you throw at it, from shaping sheet metal to striking punches. It will even handle most of your chiseling and rivet-peening needs.  Estwing ball peen hammers are intended specifically for pro metalworkers and machinists, so you can expect the 12-ounce model to handle DIY work without a hitch. Even though it has a solid steel handle, it remains comfortable during use due to its ability to reduce impact vibration by as much as 70%.
Tumblr media
The Estwing 16-ounce ball peen hammer is an excellent choice if you want the power to handle heavy-duty jobs. From chiseling to riveting, this powerhouse model delivers the performance and durability that you expect from a state-of-the-art ball-peen hammer. It is especially capable of shaping sheet metal, punching through dense material, and peening rivets.  The one-piece forged steel construction gives the Estwing 16-ounce unparalleled durability and strength. But it is versatile enough to be used for all types of mechanical work, as well as most DIY tasks. The handle makes it an absolute joy to use, with thick padding that effectively reduces shock impact
Tumblr media
How did ball-peen hammers get their name?
Over the years, many theories have been proposed as to how ball-peen hammers got their name. One unlikely story goes that the tool was invented by a metal worker in France named Jaques Balpien. Another claimed that ‘peen’ stems from the pain caused by hitting the thumb with a hammer. Still another story states that ‘peen’ is derived from the sound made by the head when it hits the metal. As colorful as those stories are, the truth is really much simpler. Ball-peen hammers have traditionally been used for ‘peening’. This is the process of bending, shaping, or flattening metal. It is also interesting to note that “peen” is spelled “pein” in the United Kingdom.
Tips for using ball-peen hammer
Ball-peen hammers are pretty straightforward and simple to use, but you do need to keep a few rudiments in mind.  When gripping the hammer, place your hand about two inches up from the bottom of the handle. This will give you the most leverage. If you are shaping metal, tap the area lightly instead of pounding it. When the metal starts to bend, you can gradually increase your tapping strength.  Work slowly around the metal’s surface, tapping each spot carefully for a more even finish. If necessary, cover the metal with a piece of cloth to prevent dents and over-shaping

Ball-Peen hammer comparison
Conclusion
The Estwing 12-ounce ball peen hammer is an excellent all-arounder that is capable of surprising power and performance. It is light enough that you won’t mind pulling it out for day-to-day jobs, but it handles most striking, punching, and peening tasks like a champ. This is easily one of the best ball peen hammers on the market.   The Estwing 16-ounce ball peen hammer is an excellent choice if you want a more powerful tool for demanding jobs. Although it is still lightweight and very manageable, the 16-ounce weight gives it an added edge for more heavy-duty work. Estwing ball peen hammer review(16-ounce) Pros: One-piece steel hammer which makes it durable Fits in different jobs such as shaping and riveting metal sheet Less vibration by up to 70% Cons: A bit expensive Read the full article

Alleged Nintendo “gigaleak” reveals eye-opening prototypes for Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario Kart, Star Fox 2 and more • Eurogamer.net
It looks like one of the biggest Nintendo leaks ever has revealed prototypes for some of the company’s classic games, including Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario Kart and Star Fox 2.
This latest leak appears to relate to the emergence of old Nintendo data earlier in 2020. Videos have hit YouTube showing early prototypes of Super Mario Kart and Yoshi’s Island – all compiled from leaked source code.
VGC collected a raft of these videos.
First up there’s this Yoshi’s Island proto with different UI graphics, placeholder music from Mario World, and has a prefix of ‘Super Mario Bros. Then there’s a build of Super Mario Kart with no drifting.
There’s also this slightly broken Super Mario Kart build with no drifting (?) and unused tracks, including a unique title theme
Versions of games like Mario All-Stars and Mario RPG have also been found and are being researched into rn pic.twitter.com/YMHaiLjXmd

There’s also a build called “Super Donkey” that includes a character that observers have pointed out looks a bit like Stanley the Bugman from Donkey Kong 3.

Also of note is the apparent leak of the Star Fox 2 source code. Q-Games chief Dylan Cuthbert, who co-developed classic SNES shooter Star Fox and the unreleased Star Fox 2 (Star Fox 2 eventually launched on Nintendo’s standalone SNES mini console 22 years after it was shelved), took to Twitter to express his concern at the leak, saying “source code is personal – it should be up to the developer if they want it in the public or not”.
Wtf – I haven?t seen this tool I made for StarFox 2 for almost 30 years, I wrote it in early c++ to teach myself the language more than anything else. Where the hell have hackers got all this obscure data from????!! https://t.co/9kN9UoQPMS

somebody managed to compile a working build/ROM stemming from the source codes files of Star Fox 2 that was leaked in the big GigaLeak today.
This build is, none other, then the long-long-known Winter CES 1995 demo. There are supposedly other builds in the source. Stay tuned. pic.twitter.com/yaSAct3WRb

People are still digging into the leak, and it looks inevitable that more will emerge over the coming days. A post on ResetEra shows the scale of the breach. It’s particularly damaging for Nintendo, which has traditionally kept its work-in-progress under lock and key. The company has yet to comment.

Best Snap-Ring Pliers for 2005 and Newer Ford F-250/350/450 Wheel Hubs
h2 padding-top:45px; /* Sortable tables */ table.sortable thead { background-color:#eee; color:#666666; font-weight: bold; cursor: default;
One of the things I see people asking for help with the most in Ford forums is help finding the best pliers for the snap-rings (retaining clips) that keep wheel hubs attached on F-250s and other Super Duty trucks, plus Ford Excursions. The wheel hub assemblies on 2005 and newer Ford Super Duties are held onto the axle with a heavy duty retaining clips that most snap ring pliers either can’t reach or are too flimsy to spread. The Ford Excursion uses the same chassis as Super duty pickups so it naturally uses the same hubs as well.
I figured so many Ford F250, F350, and F450 owners in forums ask for help finding good Snap-Ring Pliers for their wheel hubs because there aren’t any definitive results on Google when searching “best snap ring pliers for f250 hub” aside from message board and forum results, many of which are quite outdated and have broken images. I decided to remedy this problem by compiling all the suggested snap ring pliers into a single list with a comparison table. Actual suggestions from people working on their Ford Super Duty hubs can be found under the table.
Table of Best Snap Ring Pliers for F250 Hubs

It’s easy to see from the table that the Knipex 4611A series of snap ring pliers are a good balance of productivity and affordability when it comes to removing the snap ring pliers on ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, and F-450 pickup trucks as well as the Ford Excursion.
My personal suggestion would be the KNIPEX Tools 4611A3 External Straight Retaining Ring 8.25in Pliers because KNIPEX is THE authority on snap-ring pliers and they are still cheaper than some of the other tools listed with inflated prices. KNIPEX is a German company and their tools are very high quality, plus I like the slight outward offset the tips have for grabbing onto the snap ring and not letting it slide off while spreading. Yes, normally I’d go for something USA made – but I’m not going to let a tool’s country of origin stop me from getting the best possible tool for the job.
Best Snap Ring Pliers for F250 Hub Forum Suggestions
Here’s a run-down of the snap ring pliers suggested by Ford owners. The requirements are quite strict because the Ford snap ring pliers must be heavy duty hardened steel to not bend or break while spreading the hefty retaining clips Ford used, but they must also be long enough to reach inside the hub while also being skinny enough to spread the snap ring without hitting the sides of the hub.
K-Tool International KTI-55123 Straight Tip Snap-Ring Pliers
mtnxtreme at ford-trucks.com on 08-26-2014
I went to a large truck parts store and they had these K-Tool International KTI-55123 .090in Straight Tip Snap-Ring Pliers. They do external and internal, feel heavy in hand and must be hardened steel because the didn’t even flex, and they have extended tips so they don’t even touch the axle or hub.
Knipex 4611A2 External Straight Retaining Ring Pliers
ZMANN at powerstroke.org on 09-10-2017
Knipex 4611A2 19-60mm external – they don’t have any multi pivot force multipliers or look insanely long but it was the only set out of 10 that worked for me.
Knipex 4611A3 External Straight Retaining Ring Pliers

I ordered Knipex 4611A3 last night, $25 on Amazon, received today, took me 4 seconds each side, DONE!! Thanks you!!
Knipex 4611A4 External Straight Retaining Ring Pliers
sdsd at ford-trucks.com on 11-22-2016
Knipex 4611A4… Got them yesterday. Well made, beefy, tips are hardened steel. After spending several hours bending, reinforcing and ultimately breaking a couple of other ring pliers trying to remove this ring, it was unbelievably easy to remove the snap ring with these… like less than 5 seconds.
Knipex 4911A3 External Straight Retaining Ring Pliers
Greg5OH at pirate4x4.com on 11-08-2016
Knipex 4911A3 just bought these and removed my 05 hub snap rings with ease. Approx $35 on amazon. Pretty funny when reading reviews about multiple long reach pliers “does not work on SD snap ring”, this one specifically said “works on super duty snap ring pliers” in the review.
Mac Tools TPQ56 Straight Retaining Ring Pliers
I added the TPQ56 Straight Retaining Ring Pliers by Mac Tools because there is a youtube video that recommends them, but also because these Mac Tools snap ring pliers are the consumer brand equivalent to the industrial brand Proto J377 Retaining Ring Convertible Pliers which have been recommended. Same tool, it just costs 32% more than the Proto equivalent.
Stanley Proto J377 Retaining Ring Convertible Pliers

This set worked well for me.
jonereb at ford-trucks.com on 10-06-2010
Proto 377 is what i use. They are tough 👍
Stanley Proto J395 Retaining Ring Pliers External
bryhuds at powerstroke.org on 11-23-2013
My existing set of pliers was not stout enough for the job and after searching the various local auto parts and hardware stores I quickly determined that none of their snap ring pliers were up to the heavy duty task. I ended up buying a set of Proto 395 pliers from Grainger. Made in the USA and worked perfect!
Sunex 30077 Straight Snap Ring Pliers
Durapig Eater at powerstroke.org on 07-06-2017
I have a pair of Sunex 30077 9″ straight snap ring pliers with .09″ tip I got for 20 ish from amazon, work great and strong.
Wilde Tool G407P Straight Tip Lock Ring Pliers
I added the G407P Straight Tip Lock Ring Pliers by Wilde Tool to the table because Wilde Tool is the industrial line of Snap-on tools and the G407P Straight Tip Lock Ring Pliers are pretty much the same as the Snap-on SRP3B Snap Ring Pliers that were recommended. Save some money and get the Wilde Tool version for about 1/3 the price instead. Also comes in black for a few bucks extra.
Suggested 05+ Ford Super Duty hub Snap Ring Pliers Unavailable or Discontinued
These tools were suggested in forums but cannot be bought online or are part of a larger set of tools.
Snap-on SRPC9000A Snap Ring Pliers – Recommended by a few forum users but can only be bought from ebay but they seem to be discontinued from Snap-on, I can only find them on the Snap-on B2B site. Part number SRPCR9000 has the same size specifications so I’ve added it to the table instead.
Harbor Freight 11 piece Snap Ring Plier Set – This was recommended by a forum user but it seems to be discontinued, however I don’t think they would have stood the test of time anyhow.. The only set of snap ring pliers currently at Harbor Freight that look like they would come close to doing the job is the “Precision Snap Ring Pliers, 8 Pc.” set but I did not add the set to the table since they have not been vouched for by a forum user. The set is $59.99 which makes each tool about $7.50 and it has 7in and 9in pliers with straight and angle tips. In a pinch it might work if you can’t order online.
Suggested Snap Ring Pliers that do NOT work on 05+ Ford Super Duty hubs
For some reason people in forums suggested these tools for the job, however their suggestions were discounted by people further in the threads or just by reading amazon reviews. Some of those people had 04 and older Super Duty Ford trucks and they just assumed these tools would work on 05+, and some had tools that were modified to work.
Gearwrench 82032 Double X Internal Snap Ring Pliers – Forum user suggested but multiple amazon reviews state they aren’t strong enough to work.
Channellock 927 8-Inch Snap Ring Pliers – Forum user suggested but another user stated they were too wide to fit, as do many Amazon reviews.
Other Snap Ring Pliers confirmed to NOT work on wheel hubs for 05+ Super Duty Trucks
Channellock 926 6-Inch Snap Ring Pliers – Just a shorter version of the Channellock 927 that also do not work.
Lang 1434 – Good tool but does not fit/reach into hub (-Hannebal)
Lisle 46000 – Don’t even waste your time or money. These are for tiny snap rings. (-Hannebal)
OTC 4513 – These are awesome!! Huge behemoths BUT they do not fit into the hub assembly! (-Hannebal)

All In An Iowa Mother's Day!
I'm a hobbiest at best that lately moved again to the US and haven't got many instruments to work on the Taco. Waste of money, get an honest Craftsman set and complement with varied tools from Mac/Matco/Snapon/Whatever as you strive them and see what works best. The chests and cabinets are fitted with a barrel key lock system to ensure your instruments are secure while you're away. They are largely made in Mexico on the previous Stanley Proto plant: good instruments, full warranty and a variety of things. At this worth level, all husky tools reviews 4 of those instrument units characteristic instruments made outside the United States. Be at liberty to reach out to us with any additional questions or comments concerning the Pro Instrument Innovation Awards program. I believed most all tools had a lifetime warranty... I imply even the cheap Fashionable Mechanic ratchets at Wal mart are life time quarnteed. Snap-On makes loads of specialty tools and those of exceptional dimension that most people do not want, though every part they promote is very well made and feels solid within the hand. Six of the 11 examined compressors have two or more hose connections, so you can function two instruments on the identical time (on separate hoses). The instruments appear to be comparable quality to my dad's set of old Craftsman ratchets. I already have a Stihl blower and HS 81R professional grade hedger, however simply might change the hedger with the articulating hedger unit for the Kombi. In actual fact, it is tough sufficient that several different Pro brands flip to it for their bags. Craftsman instruments are for essentially the most part make in the U.S.A. They are utilized by many auto mechaincs and even the car mecanics & DIYers. Just my02 but...........I work as a heavy responsibility mechanic at a big trucking company and i pull wrenches all day lengthy, i have used crap-on, grasp crap, and even some rusty but trusty husky tools. Quality sensible, the instruments are among the greatest as each one is built from heavy obligation materials. It is a great time to broaden your cordless energy instrument assortment, pick up a new corded or benchtop power instrument, splurge on that woodworking jig you have been hankering for, or top off on high quality equipment. Once you open the black metal box, you're going to see a huge collection of instruments. I've subbed/helped the lady that handles returns on many occaisons and you wouldn't CONSIDER among the tools that have been taken again by the store. The 'software corral' supervisor was extremely useful and actually opened a model new set of Husky instruments and changed my ratchet with one from the plastic field.
