There are lots of different ways to make boxes - I’m quite traditional and prefer to avoid glue and tape. This doesn’t mean I don’t like glue, quite the opposite (UHU is a particular favourite for all things paper-related), but it can be unforgiving and doesn’t always stand the test of time. . I like to lace the lining fabric and embroidered pieces onto mount board before stitching the panels together. Lacing gives you a chance to adjust and centre fabric patterns or the embroidered panels. Stitching the panels together allows you to wriggle the panels into position to make sure the lid and base fit together snugly - and if you’ve misjudged the size of the card, you can always undo the stitches and lacing without damaging the fabric…🪡🧵 . As you can see from this detail from my Bobbin Box for Bees, another bonus of stitching panels together is the strong, near-invisible joins you create. All held together as if by magic! . People often ask me how I have the patience to stitch, but I’m not sure patience is quite the right word…’tenacious’ maybe? ‘Curious’? ‘Determined’? Sometimes it can be frustrating (such as when you think you have the perfect solution but what’s in your head doesn’t work in thread, and it all has to be undone…again…🤦‍♀️) but it’s mostly deeply satisfying. . In recent weeks I’ve been busy exhibiting and demonstrating at a wonderful new local venue @artatthealex - a pub turned art hub where stimulating creativity meets coffee, cake and local cider! ☕️🍰🍻 . Over the last couple of weekends, lots of folk have asked ‘what’s a scissor fob?’ ✂️ . There are four main purposes to a scissor fob: 1. If you drop your precious embroidery scissors, a weighted scissor fob will help stop them landing point-down (damaging them and potentially you if your foot’s in the way 😳) 2. A scissor fob will stop scissors sliding to the depths of your sofa, forever to be lost to the dust bunnies 3. A gifted fob made by a fellow stitcher is a permanent reminder of friendship 4. They are totally adorable! 😆 . So if you have a friend with a pair of naked scissors, think about stitching them a scissor fob - they’re so small they’re even easy to post! . Do you like the idea of giving an embroidered box as a present but you haven’t got time to stitch and construct one before the big day? Box tops to the rescue!! 🐝 . First find your box. The shaker-style box I used here for my Kitchen Garden Pincushion came from the wonderful Keith Shorrock - see Suppliers under my bio for details. Most large craft shops supply papier-mâché boxes ready for painting or decoupage which are perfect for customisation. Alternatively have a look for sweet tins or sturdy chocolate boxes and enjoy some up-cycling 😃 . Next choose your design. Many designers like myself have lots of smaller designs that work beautifully as box tops so you’ll be spoilt for choice! . If you’ve already decided what you want to stitch, check the measurements to make sure that the finished piece will fit on the box - if it’s too big, could you stitch part of the design instead of all? If it’s too small, could you repeat elements or add a border? . Once you’ve stitched your design, cut a piece of mount board and some wadding or felt a little smaller than the finished stitching. Then lace the stitching into place over the wadding/felt and card to create your stitched panel. . If you want/need to decorate the rest of your box, it’s best to do this now. Use colours and patterns that will complement and not swamp your stitching - you don’t want to overpower your hard work 😉 . Now for the shocking part…while I don’t recommend using glue in my fully embroidered boxes, you will need it here! Follow the instructions for the glue that’s suitable to the type of box you have and spread it on the box top - keep any blobs to the middle where they’ve got room to spread 💦 . Carefully place the stitched panel on top of the box and gently press into place. Ta daa!! You’ve got a beautiful box 🤩 (and if your glue’s oozed out a little, a pretty trim or ribbon around the edge will cover it up!) 🎁 . To kick off this week’s focus on boxes (many thanks to all you lovely voters!) here’s my Bobbin Box for Bees 🐝 I designed it to house the favourite lace bobbins of @sandiwoodsdesigner - and if you’ve not yet seen Sandi’s work, you’re in for a treat…lace like you’ve never seen it before, and nothing like Granny’s doilies… 😂🤤 . This box has a double-lined lid and base - the outer lid is fully embroidered and lightly padded while the inside of the base is lined with a beautifully soft moleskin to protect the delicate bobbins. By now you might have realised how much I love stitching bees and hives…you might not know that I’ve also got a soft spot for knots too - although you might guess from the blossom covering the hawthorn tree on my Beehive Pin Drum 🌸🌸🌸 . The much maligned knot is much more straightforward than many give it credit for - and the number of different effects you can create by adding or taking away strands, or choosing a colonial over a French (or vice versa), is astonishing! French knots tend to make smaller, tighter knots while the figure-of-eight used for the colonial knot creates a more open knot that’s softer in appearance. . The trick is to take it slowly and maintain your tension as you take the needle through the knot and into the linen - there’s no need to rush 😉 (And if it all goes wrong, you can always unpick and use beads instead!!) .
