SMVDU and Excise Deptt organises Mansar to Mahoregarh trek
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra in collaboration with Excise Department Jammu organized a one day Trekking event from Mansar Lake to Mahoregarh fort. A group of 150 trekkers from SMVDU was flagged off from Mansar by Kusum Sharma, Dy. Excise Commissioner Executive Jammu in the presence of Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Registrar SMVDU and Ved Prakash CEO Surinsar Mansar Development Autority SMDA. " This is an important Trek which the Tourism deptt. has promoted from last few years for making Mansar and adjoining areas winter hub of soft adventure activities like trekking, adventure camps, hiking etc. She said that trekking expedition for students is aimed at spreading awareness about drug abuse and encouraging youth to pursue healthy life style and take part in sports and adventure activities. She said that Excise Deptt. believes that participation of youth in sports and adventure activities would lead to positive lifestyle changes. Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Registrar SMVDU briefed the students about the trekking event and need for the cleanliness to be maintained in the Surinsar Mansar Wildlife sanctuary. He emphasized that Mansar offers many trekking routes which makes the experience of a visitor more enjoyable and adventurous. He thanked Excise Deptt for sponsoring such type of events so as to motivate youth and to keep them away from anti-social activities like drugs. He Congratulated Board of Cultural Activities for organising such a event.
Ved Prakash CEO SMDA appealed to the participants to adopt adventure activities and participate in wonderful treks developed by the Authority. Suraj Prakash Lochan ETO Samba , Rupali Vaid ETO Udhampur Excise Range awared the participants about the menace of drug abuse. " Drug addiction is a challenge where Government alone cannot succeed unless there is community help, parental assistance and proactive role shown by all sections of society. " he said. Starting the seven kilometre trek from Mansar to Mahoregarh Fort a UT of JK monument the trekkers enjoyed beautiful panoramic views of the nearby hills while ascending the trail. The trekkers were enchanted by the beauty of serene Mansar Lake and the greenery on offer. At the culmination of the trek, the participants were given certificates by the Chief Guest. Students from SMVDU while sharing their experiences said that such trails give an opportunity to enjoy nature at its best and hoped for joining more treks organized by the University and the Excise deptt in near future.

Earlier during my trip to Ramtek, I could only explore the Ramtek Temples and the surrounding lakes in this region. However, this time, I returned to the same place with a different perspective. My quest was to look for the ruins of the Vakataka Kingdom, which are as old as 200 Century B.C. It is only recently that the excavations are one a full swing, unearthing ancient secrets buried for ages. Here’s what I found here in the ruins of Vakataka Kingdom, this weekend.
About Mansar and How to Reach
Just 45 km East of the Nagpur City is the spiritual abode of Ramtek. The entry to Ramtek temples takes place through a small hilly corridor called the Mansar village.
Ages ago, these villages were only connected to the city with Maharashtra State Transport Buses. On rare occasions, people from one outskirts of the city would travel to the other corner.
The earliest revelations about the Vakataka Kingdom was brought out by the Nagpur University.
In the early 1994-95, the Archaeological Survey of India officially started the excavation of the Vakataka Kingdom ruins. This revelations were about to change the course of history for the people here.
The one peculiarity in exception to the other ancient Indian structures is that the entire structure is built in brickwork, not stone.
Now here comes the question, when did we actually migrate from stone to bricks?
What is even more fascinating is the binding materials used for the construction work which has kept these structures intact for so many years!
Unearthing this fact would be a remarkable discovery for the modern-day architecture.
Exploring the Place

I walked in through the mysterious gates of the high walled perimeter of the Vakataka Kingdom Ruins this Sunday.

At the entrance, there is a brief history on revelations about the place which is worth a read. As you walk in through the gates and enter the area, you can see the flamed flowers of the Palash trees, line all around the area.
Essentially, there are three parts to this place.
First, is the pyramidal palace at the entrance, about 100 feet in height.
The second part is the Panchkoni Shivalingam on top of a hillock, from where several artistic collections such as murals, effigies, coins and jewels have been recovered.
Finally, another pyramidal structure on top of another hillock to the North West of the main palace, similar in design but in the form of a lotus when viewed from top.

Constructed on a vast open ground, this palace was once so beautifully concealed underneath a hillock that no one even doubted anything about it.
The palace was unearthed after series of careful excavations and what stood is front was an ancient artistic galore, holding ages of unrevealed secrets.

Further to the ruins here, a narrow foot track runs through the trees, and continues further uphill, where the other two structures of these ruins are located.

At first glimpse, it rarely looks like a Shivalingam, unless you get closer and see.
Ornately chiseled out in stone, the Shivalingam placed at the center of an elevated stone megalith with five corners pointing in five directions, in the form of a key, when viewed from top. Hence the name, Panchkoni (Five Edged).
Smoothly carved designs have been engraved on the corners of the platform which add to the elegance of the structure.
The five corners represent the five nature elements, (Although this is not a validated fact, as different people have different logic about the place).

The temple is located within a bowl-shaped terrain, and you can further hike up to get a glimpse of the Ramtek Town from a distance.

The last conquest is another pyramidal structure uphill on the North East of the palace.
This is also perhaps the most mysterious one, the reason, I decided to climb there the last.

The architecture is similar to the palace, except the lotus form of design of the structure, when seen from the top.
The apparent dome-shaped lotus petal structures surround the periphery of the structure at the top. The brick work used is exemplary.
Right below the structures, there are deep tunnels that run to a distance of about 25 km. These tunnels are believed to be an escape route from Nagardhan Fort, at Nagardhan village, not very far from here.
From the top of the structure, you can get the breathtaking view of the Mansar Lake and the surrounding forested hill slopes of the region.
Last, but not the least, let’s come to the most fascinating part about this place.
The area is surrounded with volcanic rocks on which several the archaeologists have discovered several Brahmi inscriptions, which they believe have been inscribed during the same period.

Most of the inscriptions have started to fade as recovery of these ruins has taken considerable time.
A layman in symbology such as myself would have simply walked away even after having noticed them in first glance. But thanks to the interactive authorities here, who supported me in all possible ways by showing me around the interesting parts of the ruins.
Nonetheless, this is seriously invoked my interest even more in the ancient scriptures ever since my previous encounters.
The Vakataka Kingdom ruins are still undergoing excavations under the jurisdiction of the ‘Archaeological Survey of India’, Nagpur Circle. More and more striking revelations are getting unearthed from here regularly.
The people can visit the but under supervision only. The area though is open for visit after an entry into the visitor register.

The temperature fluctuates from frigid in the winter, with lows as low as 0.9 degrees Celsius, to heat waves in the summer, with highs as high as 46 degrees Celsius.

The second century AD is when Jammu's first structures were constructed. The Buddhist Stupa at Ambaran near Akhnoor, the ninth to tenth-century AD temples at Krimchi and Babor, and the old forts, palaces, and temples constructed in the middle periods are examples of these. Amar Mahal Palace
The architectural wonder along the National Highway leading to Srinagar is the Amar Mahal Palace. EBSB Organized Student Exchange Program at SMVDU
As part of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) programme, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), in collaboration with AICTE, AKAM, NSS, Vikalp and Board of Cultural Activities, SMVDU, is hosting students from Chennai Institute of Technology and Sainik School Amaravathinagar, Tamil Nadu, this time in the student exchange programme under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) from 14th-18th October 2022 to encourage interaction between students of two states/UTs. During the 5 day programme, the students will tour places of historical, scientific, and cultural importance, including Manwal temple, Mansar lake, Amar Mahal Museum, Spiritual Growth Centre, Shivkhori, Krimachi to mention a few. The visit is aimed to conduct a sustained and structured cultural connection in the areas of language learning, culture, traditions, music, tourism, and cuisine. The security arrangements are taken care of by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The programme is coordinated by Sumanta S. Sharma, Faculty Coordinator, EBSB. He thanked the patron Prof. (Dr.) Ravindra K. Sinha VC, SMVDU, and Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Registrar, SMVDU for their guidance and support.

Mansar Lake
Mansar Lake is one of the popular attractions of Jammu, which is surrounded by forest covered hills.
On the eastern bank of Mansar Lake, there is the Sheshnag Temple housing a figure of a snake with six
heads. The water body is associated with a mythological legend, therefore is frequented by tourists and
devotees alike.Boating facilities are rendered at the site by the Tourism Department. Along with
recreational facilities, the rich flora and fauna draws the attention of tourists. There is a cemented
path around the water body along with decks for sighting birds, turtles and fish.The wildlife sanctuary
at the site provides shelter to spotted deer and neelgai along with water birds such as cranes and ducks
Tourists can also explore the traditional life style of Gujjar and Backarwal communities in the
surrounding areas. These communities wear ethnic costumes and reside in open ‘kullhas’.Umapati Mahadev,
Narsimha and Durga Temple are some of the notable religious shrines in proximity of Mansar Lake. Mansar
Lake can be reached by heading on National Highway 1A.
