India's Unmanned Mission 'Vyommitra' and the Future of Space Exploration
India's 'Vyommitra' mission, scheduled for this year, will launch a female robot astronaut into space, marking a significant milestone in the country's space program. The mission aims to test technologies and pave the way for the manned mission, 'Gaganyaan', planned for the coming year.
‘Vyommitra’, the unmanned mission:
During an interview with the press, the Union Minister of Science and Technology and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, “‘Vyommitra’, the unmanned mission is planned for this year while ‘Gaganyaan’, the manned mission is planned to be launched in the coming year.”
Jitendra Singh elaborated that “India would launch Vyommitra, a female robot astronaut into space prior to the manned mission.”
Female robot astronaut:
He explained, Vyommitra is derived from 2 Sanskrit words, i.e. ‘Vyoma’, which means space, and ‘Mitra’, which means friend. This female robot astronaut is designed with the ability to observe issue alerts, and module parameters, and execute life support operations and is also capable of operating six panels and answering queries.
He added, 'Vyommitra' – a robot astronaut is constructed in such a way as to replicate human functions in space and communicate with the life support system.
Gaganyaan project:
ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission is set to exhibit India’s capability in the manned space flight. Before the manned mission, the 'Vyommitra’ mission is scheduled to launch this year.
India's proficiency:
Moreover, the Deep Sea Mission project which will examine deep-sea resources, is set to be achieved within 3 years and will showcase India's proficiency not only in outer space but also in the depths of the ocean.
He added, that the space sector in India is emerging rapidly mentioning that the space economy currently valued at $8 billion is anticipated to reach $40 million by the year 2040.
Private start-ups:
The projection is in line with the even more optimistic estimate of $100 billion, cited in the Arthur D. Little (ADL) Report, by international observers. He highlighted the efforts made in attracting private investors to invest in space start-ups. Since April 2023, the investments have raised more than 100 crore rupees.
According to the Minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reforms are responsible for the tremendous surge in the number of space startups in India.
The minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reforms for the exponential increase in the number of space startups in India. With only one startup in 2014, the country has made significant strides and now has 190 space startups, some of which have already transformed into profitable companies. The increase in entrepreneurial activity in the space sector shows the government's dedication to promoting innovation and private sector participation.
ISRO is earning foreign revenue:
ISRO, India’s space agency, has been crucial in earning foreign revenue through its satellite launches. Till now, ISRO has launched more than 430 foreign satellites, generating considerable revenue and over 290 million Euros from European satellites as well as more than $170 million from American satellites.
India's space missions:
The efficiency and cost-effectiveness of India's space missions were highlighted by Dr. Singh, who compared the costly Russian moon mission to India's Chandrayaan-3 mission, which was achieved at a significantly lower cost. India's vast human resources and skills is the main reason for this achievement.
Role of Women is space projects:
The women's leadership in significant space projects, like the Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya L1 Mission, is highlighted by him.

Ram Lalla Idol At Ayodhya Carved Out Of 2.5 Billion-Year-Old Black Granite
The idol of Ram Lalla or infant Lord Ram found a home on Monday with a Pran Pratishtha ceremony by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the new Ayodhya temple. The stone used to create the 51-inch idol is special black granite brought all the way from Karnataka.
Tumblr media
"The stone is 2.5 billion years old," confirms HS Venkatesh, Director of the National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM), Bengaluru, the national facility that helped in testing the stone using physico-mechanical analysis. The NIRM is the nodal agency to test rocks for Indian dams and nuclear power plants.
Dr Venkatesh says, "The rock is highly durable and resistant to climatic variation and will sustain thousands of years in this subtropical zone with minimum maintenance."
Most granitic rocks formed when molten lava cooled down after the earth was formed. The granite is a very hard material.
The Ram Temple has been constructed using traditional architectural designs and highest quality stones, yet it incorporates modern science and engineering techniques to make it durable, says Union Science Minister Jitendra Singh. "It has been designed to last for more than 1,000 years," he adds.
The stone was chosen from the village Jayapura Hobli in Mysuru district, a region known for high quality granite mines.
The rock is dated to the pre-Cambrian era, which is estimated to have begun some four billion plus years ago. The earth is estimated to have originated some 4.5 billion years ago. The black granite rock from which the Ram Lalla statue has been sculpted has seen at least half or more of earth's history.
Early humans appeared on earth about 14 million years ago and the humans as we see today - the species Homo sapiens - are only 300,000 years old. Scientists estimate that life originated on earth some 4 billion years ago.
The stone was carved into a beautiful idol by 38-year-old Arun Yogiraj from Mysuru, who belongs to a family of five generations of sculptors. It took him about six months to craft the Ram Lala statue. Among his other well-known masterpieces is the 30-feet black stone statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at India Gate in Delhi.
The NIRM, which helped assess the granite block with its testing laboratories at Kolar Gold Fields, told Nripendra Misra, chairperson of the temple construction committee, that the rock was "massive, melanocratic and uniform in colour". The stone is fine-grained, hard, compact and has high compressive strength, tensile strength, bending strength, breaking strength and elasticity.
The rock's qualities make it amenable for any kind of carving, Dr Venkatesh says. "In addition the rock possess high density, low porosity and water absorption with high P wave velocity, it is devoid of any internal cracks and fractures."
The stone does not absorb water or react with carbon.
