ig the thing that gets me about wodime is that the reveal of his true intentions following his defeat and beryls betrayal just makes him out to be even WORSE than we thought. Initially his goal of making a new humanity where no ones potential would ever be squandered and they could move past the gods is like "ok fine whatever cool motive still murder" but then you learn that he was in a time loop from the alien god to save humanity SEVEN TIMES to revive each of his friends, and that he grew to love humanity more and more each time and

And he still threw it away. Because despite everything, being a mage means to throw away your humanity

Wodime is genuinely tragic in the sense that despite his noble intentions, hes still ultimately choosing what is objectively a horrific path for his goals because its the only thing that makes sense to him due to fucked up mage society. He KNOWS mage culture is complete bullshit and that it hurts innocent people for no reason but he cant even see past himself for it. Despite going through (a simulation of) the human order incineration SEVEN TIMES to save each of his friends, and making allies the same way guda did, loving them more and more each time, it was still easy for him to throw it away. Despite loving his servants, he still treated Caenis like a disposable tool, despite his lamentations on how he wanted to know them more and small stuff like attending one of Eli's concerts, he was still a complete ass hat to his allies.

And Beryl even calls him out on it, disgusted that Wodime had the gall to act like he was noble despite the fact that hes commiting genocide on panhuman history. Beryl, who is someone so in love with his own depravity and all about accepting how evil humanity is, was disgusted that Wodime lied to himself this entire time. But at the same time, Wodime genuinely believes in what he's doing. He was willing to die as part of the old humanity to let the new one rise and genuinely loved Ophelia and the rest of the Crypters as his treasured allies.

And the icing on the cake is that, had the Alien God not interfered, Wodime and the rest would have. Just been revived from the coffins. And he would likely have been genuinely good friends with Guda. He dislikes that Guda is trying to stop his "noble vision" but he also genuinely respects them for making it as far as they did and CONTINUING to strive.
