so i quite possibly maybe might've almost died at work today... but that's neither here nor there. have another snippet of steddie (w much angst) while i process my new trauma over the next several hours :D
Her lips pursed as she watched. It was Nancy’s thinking face. It was a face she made when she was trying to figure out what to say. Like she was hiding something.
Why was everyone hiding something from him? What were they hiding?
“What?” he asked. “Why the fuck is everyone lying to me?” Nancy looked back, alarm clear in her wide eyes. “All week, you've all been hiding things. Lying. Not telling me something. I wanna know what the fuck everyone’s problem is!”
Eddie knew other eyes were on them the louder his voice got. He couldn't help it, though. He was so sick of all the lying. These people were supposed to be his friends. His family. What the fuck did he do?
“Eddie-”
“No, Nancy, just tell me what the fuck is going on!” He threw his hands up in exasperation. “I'm sick of all the lies and the sneaking around! Just fucking tell me the truth!”
“I can't-”
“Oh, you can't? Just like Wayne can't tell me anything? Like no one in this fucking place could tell me anything all fucking week? You can't?”
“No. I can't.”
“You're all so un-fucking-believable!” Eddie yelled. He knew he had caught the attention of everyone in the yard. He could feel Wayne’s stare. He knew Steve was looking at them too. He had a brief moment where he remembered there were children present– maybe he shouldn't have been cursing so loudly– but he really didn't care that much. He was pissed and frustrated. He couldn't figure out why everyone was acting like this. It's not like he had left Steve to-
Oh, fuck.
There's no way.
His face fell. All of the anger temporarily left his body. His eyes darted over to the pups, and it all made sense. He could see how much they looked like him. How they were with Wayne. Why Wayne was so close to Steve and his pups. The pieces were slotting together in his mind. For a fleeting moment, he felt such intense shame. He had left. He had left and barely said anything to Steve. He had left Steve to raise their pups all on his own. He was no better than his own parents; his dad fucking off whenever he felt like it, not returning for days or weeks at a time, or whenever his mom dropped him off at Wayne’s and disappeared for a few days. Like his mom leaving for good when Eddie was nine, and his dad told him she was dead. It was years before he found out that she had been alive that whole time, and only died a few weeks before.
Then he realized something else, and the anger started to set back in again. Eddie hadn't known. They all knew, and no one told him. Wayne had known. Not one person standing in that backyard had told Eddie he had pups. Pups he would have loved and cared for in a heartbeat. They had all lied to him. Kept his own pups from him. Eddie hadn't even known.
He frowned and looked at Nancy. “They're mine, aren't they?” he asked slowly, fighting to keep his voice as even as possible. He watched Nancy shoot a panicked look at Steve, and that was all the confirmation he needed. His efforts not to explode were thrown right out the window. “You all hid my own fucking kids from me? Seriously? How the fuck could you do that me?”
