The Road Trip (4/?)
The second part of their journey to Milan mostly passed in silence. “Look, we’re just going to have to try and get through this together. You asked me along, so the least you can do is pretend you actually want this,” Lewis said, without taking his eyes off the road.
“Not by choice,” Max bit out.
“What do you mean, not by choice?”
“My PR-team pretty much forced me into this. And for some reason I don’t understand, Christian helped them. I didn’t want this, but they said if I didn’t convince you, the nicest and kindest driver on the grid, voted unanimously by fans, to come with me on this stupid road trip, my reputation would be fucked. So yes, I’m taking advantage of your perceived kindness. Please kindly drop me off at the nearest gas station so the whole world will know how much we hate each other.”
“For what it’s worth, I don’t hate you. I respect you. And honestly I didn’t expect the great Max Verstappen to care about what people think. You always seem to go through life like you don’t give a care in the world—it’s a luxury I could never afford and I envy you for that, but it only motivates me to fight harder to get back in your rear-view mirrors. Or preferably, to see you in mine. If you want to show the world they’re right about us, then fine, I’ll drop you off at the next petrol station. But isn’t it the great strength of champions not to give up when the going gets tough? Isn’t this where champions persevere through sheer grit and determination? Who knows. Perhaps you’ll be surprised.”
Max stared ahead and blinked. “Is this where your whole Still I Rise-shtick comes from? Do you just give everyone who takes advantage of your kindness a pep talk?”
“It’s part of it, yes. But my motto—not a gimmick— is about much more than that. And no, I don’t give everyone a pep talk, but if you think I’m unfamiliar with people taking advantage of me, you don’t know me very well,” Lewis said, the only sign of any frustration being that he gripped the steering wheel a bit tighter.
“Fine, whatever. Let’s just keep this show on the road,” Max acquiesced before going back to staring out the window.
“Glad to see you’ve decided to give it a chance. Want to do another round of those glovebox questions?”
Max shrugged. “Fine, yeah. Uhm, welcome to another round of Glovebox Questions. I guess. Oh, this one’s fun. Can you say three nice things about your travel companion?”
Lewis carefully swerved around someone as he stamped even harder on the gas. “Three?” Max nodded, half turning so he could see the expression on Lewis’ face.
“Well, you’re a great and consistent racer…er…” Lewis tapped his fingers on the steering wheel as he racked his brain for something else to say. They nearly swerved onto the lane next to them, but Lewis course-corrected before any harm could befall them or anyone else.
“You’re loyal to your friends and family, which is really admirable…er…one more…” Lewis said as Max arched an eyebrow. “Is it that hard to say something nice about me?”
“It is if you are trying to say something meaningful. I mean, you’re skilled, determined, loyal, good with kids from what I’ve heard. How much more do you want me to stroke your ego?”
Max blanched and Lewis chuckled, his pearl-white teeth shining as he winked at the camera. “That’s…four,” Max said, a nervous chuckle escaping him. “Or six. I forgot to count.”
Silence fell over them like a blanket until Max cleared his throat. “All right, I guess it’s my turn to stroke your ego then.”
“So long as it’s just my ego you’re stroking,” Lewis joked, his lips curling upwards. Max did his best to disguise his chuckle with a cough. “If you want me to be nice to you, you shouldn’t torture me like this.”
“Oh, just shut up and answer the question, Max. Or do you also fail to perform when your engineer tells you a joke?”
Toto wanted to grab Christian by the collar and scream at him as they watched the livestream. Do you see what I mean now?!

Where To Stay in Lombok: The Best Surfing, Beaches & Accommodation
This guide to where to stay in Lombok will show you all the best areas of the island, including the best surf spots and the best local villages. Plus, we’ll breakdown the top-rated budget, mid-range and luxury hotels on the island. The goal of this post is to help you find out where to stay in Lombok and which areas, hotels and beaches will suit you best.
Lombok was one of our favourite Islands in all of Indonesia and we’ve spent 3 months living in Canggu Bali and another 3 months travelling around Indonesia… so that says a lot!
Where To Stay in Lombok (Areas)
There are numerous towns and beach villages around Lombok, so figuring out where to stay in Lombok isn’t always easy. But, no matter where you choose to stay in Lombok, it’s likely that you won’t want to leave!
Note: If you’re staying in Lombok, you may also want to check out the nearby Gili Islands!
Kuta
Kuta is where most people choose to stay in Lombok because if the spectacular scenery. There are jagged cliffs and mountains stretching out along the coast near Kuta that offer beautiful viewpoints over the sea.
Wondering Where To Stay in Lombok? Here’s a beautiful hidden beach near Kuta, Lombok
The beaches in and around Kuta are some of the best in the entire country, with powdery white sand and aquamarine waters. This is also where you’ll find some of the best surfing in the world and it’s very easy to get lessons and boat tours out to the best breaks.
Senggigi
This is the main tourist strip on the island. Lining a long stretch of black volcanic sand, there are countless guest houses, hotels and resorts along the beach. There are some good restaurants and bars in town as well.
Sunset over Senggigi Lombok
It’s worth noting that during high season (July – August) the accommodation can book up quite quickly in Senggigi so it’s worth booking ahead.
Tanjung
This developing tourist destination is set on a beautiful natural harbour with a nice beach and numerous 5 star resorts. There’s also a golf club on the nearby Sire Peninsula and there is a marina here where you’ll see several sail boats and traditional Indonesian vessels as well.
Mataram
Few tourists head to Mataram, but if they do it’s generally to check out the numerous mosques, the Taman Mayura water palace and the nearby Narmada Park.
If you’re looking to find local life on Lombok, you’ll find it in Mataram. There’s also a good variety of restaurants here as well as the cool strip of street stalls and warungs along Jalan Udayana street. When most people choose where to stay in Lombok, they typically go for Kuta or Senggigi, but if you’re looking to be in a local city, this might be the place for you.
Where To Stay in Lombok (For Surfing)
Without a doubt the best surf spots in Lombok are all around Kuta, but there are some other spots as well. If you’re trying to figure out where to stay in Lombok, and your decision is largely related to the best surfing spots on the island.
Gerupuk Bay
This long, jagged bay is known as being one of the most consistent surf spots in Lombok, with some of the best swells you’ll find on the island. Gerupuk lies just 7 kilometers east of Kuta and the breaks here can only be reached by boat. It’s best to hire a boat and driver (and surf instructor if you’re a beginner) from Kuta. Most guest houses and hotels can arrange trips to Gerupuk Bay relatively easy, just tell them the day before.
Are Guling
This is another beautiful break located just outside of Kuta to the west. Unlike Gerupuk, you can reach the breaks of Are Guling by boat and by land. This is probably the best right-hander break on the South Coast of Lombok and at mid and low tides there’s some nice barrels here that can be up to 10 feet high.
Mawi
This heavy reef break lies just 20 minutes west of Kuta and attracts more experienced surfers. With 10 foot drops along a deep left barrel, these waves are known to hold you down for a while. It’s best to come here at mid tides between May and September.

The Road Trip (3/?)
A quick and short part 3 of The Road Trip (with Max and Lewis) for you!
— x —
Max drove them to their first overnight stop in Luxembourg, about two hours south from Spa.
Neither driver spoke on the way there and the energy in their mandatory ‘daily report’ was lukewarm if not ice cold.
The following morning, they decided to get on the road bright and early. “So, since you’re navigating today, where are we headed?” Max asked as he pulled out of the hotel parking lot.
“Our first destination is Milan,” Lewis said, shooting the camera a cheeky look. “Let me know if you want to switch on the way, all right?”
“Hey! Don’t question my driving skills like that,” Max complained as he took a bite of his apple.
“All right,” Lewis said, ignoring the jab. “Turn onto the A1 please.”
The first hour passed mostly in silence. When Lewis wasn’t navigating, he was sitting cross-legged as he stared out the window. The second hour passed in much the same way, but by the time the third hour rolled around, Lewis had enough.
“Are you really not going to say anything?”
“Why would I,” Max said. “I have nothing to say.”
“As I recall, you asked me to come on this trip with you. For the socials, you said. Could you at least make an effort, or are we really aiming to bore our fans to death?”
“Fine. What do you want to talk about?”
Lewis sighed and reached for the glovebox. “No doubt they’ve left enough for us to find in case we didn’t know what to do.”
Indeed, Lewis pulled free a stack of cards. “Oh. Let’s see, the navigator asks the questions and we both have to answer. We each get to pass two questions maximum. Ready?”
“Yeah, all right,” Max said as he turned right onto the A355. “First question. Simple one. What’s your favourite colour?”
“Blue,” Max answered without even taking a moment to think as Lewis said, “Purple.”
“Second question. Do you have any pets?”
“I have two cats. Jimmy and Sassy,” Max said. “And you have Roscoe,” Max answered for Lewis. “Indeed I do. Do you happen to know what breed he is too?” Lewis asked as he stifled a chuckle and attempted to keep the conversation going.
“Can’t be anything other than an English Bulldog, no?”
“Correct,” Lewis said, not even surprised Max knew.
“Then counter-question, can you guess what breed Jimmy and Sassy are?”
“Hey! That’s not fair! My dog is basically a public figure whereas your cats only occasionally feature on one of those streams you do. But I think I read somewhere that they’re Bengal cats?”
Max arched an eyebrow in his direction. “Are you stalking me, Hamilton?”
Lewis didn’t bother answering the question and muted the audio. “All right, that’s enough fun and games for now. Uhm, should we get lunch in Basel and then I’ll drive until we get to Milan?”
Max shrugged. “Fine by me.”
Lewis unmuted the audio, but once again silence reigned supreme, the easy conversation and banter from earlier gone.
Meanwhile, elsewhere, far away from the road-tripping drivers, an argument was taking place.
“No. Absolutely not.”
“Yes. When they make it through this road trip, we tell them.”
“But why do we have to tell them?”
“Because if my suspicions are correct and they do make it through this road trip unscathed, we’re not going to be able to sneak around for much longer.”
“But only if they make it through this. What do you know that I don’t, Wolff?”
“Not if, when. And patience. You’ll get what I am talking about soon enough, Horner.”

The Road Trip (2/?)
Hello all and welcome back to The Road Trip (with Max and Lewis)! From now on all parts will be tagged with “#the road trip au” and “#the road trip” for those of you who wish to follow along :). All right, on with the show!
Max dawdled in front of the Mercedes motorhome. The lights were on inside and the silver star gleamed menacingly overhead.
Taking a deep breath, Max dashed inside. In a moment of utter panic, he realised he had no idea where to go. So, onward he went.
Max had almost made it through all the way to the back, when suddenly Toto fucking Wolff appeared in his path. The tall Austrian looked Max up and down, then continued on his way.
Frustrated and determined not to show how lost he was, Max continued on his way too. That’s when he heard it. Voices. Lewis.
Max steeled himself and knocked on the door. A head peered around the corner. Fuck, it’s George, Max thought. If there was anyone he got along with less than Lewis Hamilton, it had to be George Russell.
He had potential, but he was even worse than Hamilton in most aspects.
“What are you doing here,” George sneered.
“Hey!” Max heard Lewis shout from inside. “Don’t be rude. Who’s our guest?”
If Lewis only knew he was telling his teammate to be nice to his arch-rival. Max knew as well as anyone that if any driver was going to challenge Max all the way to the last race, it was going to be Lewis.
Max dreaded the idea. If Mercedes really did catch up, it was going to be 2021 all over again. He’d much rather drive out front, thirty seconds ahead of the next car than scrap with Hamilton every single race.
“It’s Max Verstappen,” George said, looking Max up and down. “By all means,” Max heard Lewis say, “let him in then. You don’t let the reigning champion stand in the hallway!”
“Fine,” George acquiesced as he stepped aside with a fake smile. “I’ll go,” George announced as Max stepped past him and came face to face with Lewis.
“Yeah, all right. Enjoy your evening, George!” Lewis shouted after the young brunet. George didn’t respond and Lewis just rolled his eyes.
“Don’t pay attention to George. He was just busy explaining to me that him impeding me in quali was actually my fault and that he would’ve finished ahead of me if he had driven a good quali lap, so…”
“Never thought I’d say this, but what an idiot. There’s no way he would’ve finished ahead of you,” Max said, raking his hand through his hair as he tried to hide the blush creeping onto his cheeks.
Lewis only smiled, his teeth gleaming in the dim light. “Don’t flatter me, Max. Our relationship isn’t like that. Now do tell, what brought you here?”
“Well, I have a favour to ask,” Max asked, his eyes downcast.
“A favour? My, my. A day full of surprises indeed. What kind of favour?”
“I wanted to ask if you’d like to go on a road trip with me.”
Lewis immediately sat up straighter and arched an eyebrow. “You want me to go on a road trip with you? Why?”
“Well, it’s for the socials. I thought, you know, if we could show our fans that we can get along…” Max paused, knowing Lewis understood what he meant.
“They’d stop warring. If you think it’ll work, then sure, I’ll come.”
Max let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. “Just like that? I thought this was going to be way more difficult.”
“Just like that. When are we leaving?”
“As soon as we’ve gathered our stuff, I think,” Max said with a shrug.
“Very well then, let’s get packing. And I’ll call the dogsitter that she’ll need to take care of Roscoe for a while longer.”
By the time they made it to the car with all their luggage in tow, the social media crew was already waiting for them.
“All right,” someone said. “We’ve outfitted the car with cameras and GoPro’s, in the most non-intrusive spaces of course, so they won’t hinder you as you drive. The fans will be able to follow you as you go—with a delay of course or else you’re getting nowhere—and you’ll be required to film a daily report. Now, you can always mute yourselves should you want to have a private conversation, but of course we’d like to get as much as possible on camera and with audio.”
Max and Lewis shared a look, but Max couldn’t quite read the other man’s gaze. Especially when all he did was smile politely. Was it real, was it fake, Max didn’t know.
“And where will we be going?” Lewis asked.
“The plan is for you to tour around Italy and then drive to Zandvoort from there in time for the Grand Prix,” some social media intern piped up as she handed them their itineraries. “Any further questions?”
“Yes,” Max said. “Who will drive the first leg of the journey?”
“How about you drive?” Lewis said, a beaming smile on his face as his teeth glinted in the sunlight.
Max shrugged. “All right. In that case, I think we’re done. What do you say Lewis, should we get on the road?”
As the Range Rover with the two drivers inside drove away, Christian shared a look with the head of the social media crew, who asked, “How long until one of them begs us to come pick him up from the side of the road?”
“I give it two days,” Christian said, hiding a chuckle behind his hand. “You willing to put money on that, boss?” the Social Media Manager asked.
“Yeah, £100 says they’ll last two days at most.”
“Noted,” the Social Media Manager said. “I’ll see your £100 and raise you £500, by saying they’ll last a week.”
“And I’ll see your bet and raise you both,” a third voice with a thick Austrian accent piped up. “£1000 says they’ll make it all the way to Zandvoort.”
“That is bold, Wolff,” Christian said. “We’ll take it. Let’s see which one of us ends up being right. May the best man win.”
They shook hands to make it official.
All right, that’s it for part two! Hope you enjoyed and please let me know your thoughts🫶🏻

The Road Trip (1/?)
Based on: “I would like to see Lewis on a road trip with Max” ~ George Russell, Singapore 2023
Setting: Post-Spa Francorchamps 2023.
“No, absolutely not.”
-“But it would be good for the socials. The fans will love it.”
“Still. I refuse.”
-“Help me out here,” the PR strategist said as he looked to his left.
“Max, you have to admit, it would help your image. The fans like him, so show the world you can get along…”
“Oh, so you’re saying there’s a problem with my image.”
-“Well,” the PR strategist said, bracing himself for Max’ fury as he continued, “to many Formula One fans, you might appear…a bit… cold?”
“And going on this road trip with Lewis fucking Hamilton would fix that?”
-“Yes, the fans…they overwhelmingly see him as the most approachable and kind driver on the grid. You do this, and they’ll appreciate you. It’s good promo.”
Max rubbed his temples and sighed.
“Fine. I’ll go. When do we leave?”
The PR strategist smiled and turned to his left, where Christian grimaced. “Right after you convince him to go with you.”
Max’ face turned beet red as he cast a scathing look across the table, before storming out of the room, heading straight for the Mercedes motorhome.
To be continued…
