Why I like them
Essentially the same answer I gave for Simm!Master. I love a good villain, and I love how much the Master (Missy) enjoys being a villain, how much they enjoy doing terrible, chaotic, overdramatic things. It’s enjoyable to watch. And part of the appeal is their relationship with the Doctor, everything behind it, how it drives them, is an obsession, and is a distraction, even a weak spot at times. And in Missy’s case in particular, how much she loves the Doctor is shown a lot more openly. She tries one method after another to bring them back together, before ultimately attempting to change for him. She stops pretending that she doesn’t want him, doesn’t want them side by side, and always has. Love me some co-dependant, fucked up, enemies/friends/lovers/what have you.
And also, Michelle god damn Gomez.
Why I don’t
I prefer the Master being evil. They can be complex, they can be sympathetic and nuanced, they can have a soft spot for the Doctor (and they do have all of these things) but frankly I just enjoy the character more when they’re evil. For this reason I am maybe not as big of a fan of Missy compared to other Masters, or more specifically, of later Missy compared to early Missy. So it’s not that I don’t like her at all, but for the character, I just like her better as the Queen of Evil.

Doctor/Master (though, if Moffat was going to put me through ‘The Doctor Falls’ and that mess of characterisation and continuity and weird sexism, coupled with a lack of flirting between Simm!Master and 12, then Missy and the Master should have made out. I’m just saying)

There’s no one I really consider her to be friendly enough to classify as a brotp. The Master apparently needs more friends.
Head Canon
More me just trying to make sense of the conflicting characterisation/motivations/attitudes of the Master between The End of Time, Dark Water/Death in Heaven, and World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls.
Missy wakes up on the floor of her TARDIS, having just regenerated, and while she might not remember exactly how that came about, she remembers a few other things, and not just a woman she that can’t quite picture clearly pushing her up against a wall. The anger, the anger at the Doctor abandoning her on Gallifrey (and in general) is still there, she remembers that, but there’s something more. Twined in around the constant want for the Doctor are all the fears we saw from Simm!Master before he regenerated - the anger and fear over what the Doctor does/will do to them, the impression that the Doctor has written them off, given up on them (that version of them), the indignation at the Doctor’s sanctimony - how much better and nobler he presents himself to be - and even parts of the Doctor’s pleading speech, the good and the bad.
And Missy might not remember the events around these feelings and foggy memories, but they’re there and she feels them and so she makes a plan. She’s as angry as she is wanting. She wants the Doctor back as much as she wants to hurt him, so she comes up with a plan that will hurt him and the humans he’s so fond of, but that will also drag the Doctor down to her level, prove that he’s not above her, not better than her, and never has been. She wants to prove that they’re the same. So she gives him an army, a horrific one, that would allow him to do what he says he wants to do - help people, save people - but would also, if he took it up, strip away the facade, and force the Doctor to admit that they’re the same.
Unpopular opinion
Like I said, I prefer evil Master so I didn’t really care as much for Missy’s “redemption”. Also, I feel like it wasn’t particularly well handled, both in a characterisation sense - in what way Missy turns “good”, it how it happens, and what motivates her - and in a writing sense - pacing and how much happened off screen.
And so I don’t mind, and in fact am glad, Chibnall brought the Master back and made him a bad guy again (and the fact that he was brought back at all. Sorry Moffat, you don’t get the final word on this character)

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen
That the multi-Master audio drama (or any future Missy/Master content) pulls more of that really shallow, lazy, ‘gurl-power/look at how feminist and progressive this (read, in some cases, ‘my’) version of the character is compared to the decades and dozens of versions that came before’ crap. Missy didn’t need that to begin with to be a cool and engaging character, it’s insulting, and it doesn’t even make sense because all Masters are the Master ie, they are the same person.
(and actually, Moffat pulled the same thing with the First Doctor in the Xmas special, and it’s just unnecessary, and like I said, insulting. This kind of thing is also just a general pet peeve when it comes to the writing of female and/or legacy characters. Put some actual effort in, writers)

Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Got back from the Kingsman double bill a bit ago and am trying to put my brain into words even though I'm very tired and a bit numb and I smuggled five hours' worth of gin into the cinema in an Evian bottle so I'm as drunk as Harry at breakfast time.
OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE SPOILERS BELOW
Watching them back to back like this was interesting because it highlighted so clearly how much better the first one is than this fumbly ridiculous sequel. Not saying it's not good or not worth watching or whatever because it absolutely is worth watching for several reasons I will babble after another teacup of gin, but holy god is this really the best they could come up with? REALLY? A 100% true fact that I believe with my entire heart: YOU reading this, you are a better writer than people being paid obscene money to write films. I could easily name thirty fic writers off the top of my head right now who have an infinitely better grasp on pacing and plot and characterisation and dialogue than the people responsible for this stuff. I've not read any press or fan reviews but I imagine there's going to be a hell of a lot of backlash over so much in this from every angle because it's just so incredibly lazy and sometimes ugly and absolutely cannot stand up to its own hype.
Really good things:
* SPECTACULAR, EH!
* Eggsy/Harry and Eggsy/Merlin shippers, goddamn we have a lot of new stuff to work with. Chemistry through the roof, especially Eggsy/Harry (including possibly the best clingy desperate hug I have ever seen on film in my entire life WE HAVE WAITED SO LONG AND IT'S HERE AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL). That was the heart and backbone of the first film, I'm so relieved that it's not only survived but evolved into something fiercer and often messier. So so good to watch. Pretty sure I've got Harry/Merlin written down the inside of my heart like the words in a stick of rock, and though it's not romantic you get much more of a sense of their friendship here and it's all just a bit shattering and gorgeous.
* Pretty much everything to do with Harry's memory loss and Eggsy and Merlin trying to shock him into remembering was great, Y E S  P L E A S E. And Harry's matter of fact comments about his loneliness, fuckkk. Angst writers, go forth with all this new information and break my heart some more! Fluff writers, fix him!
* Lots of beautiful intricate fight choreography which is literally all I need in my action films, so even if I did think the rest was complete balls (which I don't entirely) then I'd still be happy. Nothing comes near the vivid glorious gutpunch of the church scene as a standalone set piece, BUT there's so much Harry & Eggsy teamwork and please just inject this directly into my veins, it's amazing. Prepare for several years of me writing many more elaborate fight scenes than I already do.
* Part B to the above: Whiskey is a lot of fun and his fighting style is full on hardcore pornography to me.
* Merlin in a flawless Kingsman suit, RIP me.
* One of my Bespoke WIPs is about Merlin and Eggsy getting into the habit of going to the pub together sometimes and rolling home completely drunk with a kebab in each hand then trying to get in the house really quietly because Harry's asleep but they end up waking him because they think it'll be really nice to cook him breakfast in bed and Harry comes stomping downstairs in his dressing gown like "it's four o'fucking clock, put those frying pans away and drink some water!" while Merlin and Eggsy side eye each other and try not to giggle. So maudlin singing drunk Merlin was very nice to see :P
* Eggsy and Roxy bromance. There’s such lovely chemistry between them as well, it feels so natural and real, and it’s so good (and miserably rare) to see platonic friendships that aren’t shoehorned into some shitty boring love triangle.
* Eggsy and Tilde were seriously adorable. It ended up not at all satisfying as a romance plot arc because it was like CUTE - fight - marriage, it needed so much more screen time. Like all the important stuff was there, but it was just so abrupt. Include a satisfying romance or don't include one at all, fuck your lazy bullet points. But it started so well and I hope there's a ton of fic that treats them better than the script did. I appreciate the anti-Bond-ness of it all, that Eggsy's genuinely in love and wants to settle and is figuring out how that and his job can possibly fit together, especially with the complications of marrying into royalty. Interested to see where they take that if there's another film. Until then, soo much scope for fic.
* I'm shipping Harry/Elton like burning.
* Poppy was terrifying in a vaguely Umbridge-ish way. That sort of characterisation is always freaky, Julianne was great. So glossy and cheerful but absolutely dead in the eyes. And I'm ambivalent on Charlie, but I ABSOLUTELY want lots of brutal older woman villain/pathetic younger male minion smut. Please provide asap.
* T H E   M Y T H I C A L  B R E A K F A S T   S C E N E   I S   R E A L
Really bad things: well where the merry fuck do I start haha.
* I will never ever understand why they thought it was a good idea to wipe out all the locations and almost all the existing characters at the very beginning. It's lazy shitty writing. If you feel like you need to shake up your fictional world you don't just knock it all down and start over. It's cheap and very shallow angst.
* I only have two middle fingers but I need about seventeen million to even begin to profess my disgust at them killing Roxy. I knew it was going to happen, it was the only spoiler I asked someone for ahead of time and it was not at all a surprise to find out for sure. Still utterly infuriating. The way people responded so positively to her in the first one is a real indication of how ridiculously low the bar is for female characters in action films ("good at something" and "not the hero's love interest" are literally the only two requirements), and JG/MV didn't even think enough of her to follow through on the absolute base level achievement they made before. Fuck everyarse involved in this decision.
* Absolutely revolting honeypot mission scene. Not really the fact that it exists, just the entire way it was handled and shot - so predictably male-gazey and laddishly "waheyyy!" that it kind of turned my stomach. Horrible and completely unnecessary.
* A million new characters and not enough time spent on any of them to care. Tequila was barely more than a cameo. Champ and Ginger hardly had anything to do. All the Statesmen (except Whiskey) were completely two dimensional and it's such a jarring contrast to the obvious care taken over Eggsy, Merlin, and Harry. It's not even because we already know them, I don't think? It's weird to try and explain. The Statesman characters just feel so rushed and shallow, there's no substance to any of them. Kill off Roxy and replace her with paper cut-outs, ok that makes loads of sense!!! Whiskey’s a level up from the others because he gets loads more screen time and some beautiful fight scenes, but his ~emotional plot twist fell completely flat. I don’t know what it was, the pacing or a boring cliche backstory or what. It was just dull as fuck. WE HAVE HEARD THIS EXACT STORY FIVE MILLION TIMES.
A bad thing that's somehow not really a bad thing even though I'm fucking numb and want a hug:
* I've been raving for ages to people about Roxy being killed off and trying to figure out a way to satisfactorily explain how I feel about a character dying for a reason and a character dying because a writer is a lazy bastard who wants some quick angst. Merlin's death was an A+ wonderful death along the lines of my dear fictional boyfrends Quincey Morris and Lee Scoresby and a million others. Maybe it comes from all the swashbuckly historical adventure stories I grew up loving, but I'm a desperate sucker for a good noble death. Characters brave and self-aware enough to look at the bigger picture of an impossible situation and realise that their death means a better outcome for the people they love? This is ABSOLUTE CATNIP to me. Characters who go down fighting to the very end. If a character I love with my entire soul has to die, this is how I want it to happen. Give them some agency and a proper goodbye.
I mean I fully expect him to be magically resurrected with fancy prosthetic legs if there's another film because we saw those wedding set photos of him in the nice neon green cgi stockings, so really I should be saying "death". I totally reject this one. (I reject Roxy and JB's deaths as well, but the big difference is I really can't see the filmmakers bringing them back. Eyeroll.) Maybe that's what's making it easier to deal with? A not-real noble courageous self-sacrificing death. That's about as good as it gets. All three of them get Oscars for this whole sequence.
Anyway the tl;dr of it is:
This film is a very beautiful, very patchy mess. The good stuff is absolutely gloriously perfectly incredibly wonderful. Most of said good stuff is the interaction between Eggsy, Merlin, and Harry, which is written and performed with real care and heart. Nearly everything else is relatively lacklustre filler, misogyny, and shitty nonsensical decisions. These people cannot write women.
I liked it? I will definitely see it 900 more times, mainly for wet terrified Harry and gorgeous fight scenes. But ffs, how can it possibly be this difficult to pinpoint the reasons why people loved your extremely successful creation and consider including them in future plans?
I'm feeling fairly zen about everything. I kind of trained myself ages ago to think of sequels as just another bit of fanfic, so it's going to make absolutely no difference to the cheerful fluff porn and fight scenes I like to write. What I'm annoyed about isn't so much to do with ~new canon~ limiting what we're allowed to create for ourselves now, because that's just silly. It's more about being pissed off at the shoddy state of action films, particularly women in action films, when it seems like it should be SO EASY to take these astronomical budgets and create something groundbreaking. I'm so tired of this unimaginative lazy narrow-minded bullshit.

52 in 52
So last year I tried to read 52 books in 52 weeks (aka a year, if you're nasty), and because I was a shiftless philosophy student, I managed and then some.
Here are the books I've read, with some thoughts on them, for posterity, or recommendations
1) Sandman Overture, Neil Gaiman
Pretty solid, usually I hate prequels, but sandman was always pretty meandering and non-linear, so it works well. Just annoying it doesn't fit in with my pretty leatherbound absolute editions
2) Radioactive: love and fallout, Lauren Redniss
Very cool artsy biography of Marie Curie, and glows in the dark!
3) XKCD What if?
Extremely fun science, makes some abstract concepts approachable, I mean it's Randall Munroe, it's solid
4) Rise to Rebellion, Jeff Shaara
Historical novel (gonna be a few of these, I'm dead into them) about the build up to the American revolution . Kinda dry for a lot of it, but can ratchet the tension up, taught me lots I didn't know, and there's a bit towards the end where John Adams' wife calls him out on his privilege and it's pretty rad
5) Dune, Frank Herbert
I hate myself for saying this, but I was expecting it to be a bit more... dry. But seriously, everything described it as complex philosophy and politics, ASOIAF in space, and then it was a pretty straightforward adventure. The dynastic politics boiled down to a family of cool beautiful good guys vs an evil family of "hilariously" fat perverts. It was a great read, but more Laurence of Arabia than anything else
6) Squirrel girl, Ryan North 
Fantastic, fun, brilliantly written - it's Ryan North, nuff said.
7) Virgil, Steve Orlando
A cool, dark, "queersploitation" comic. Your basic "beaten and left for dead, wreaks vengeance" type story, brutal, but honestly pretty cathartic
8) the house that groaned, karrie fransman
A comic about a bunch of dysfunctional people. I didn't care for it, it was a lot of kinda shallow Freudian psychology and slightly tim burton esque "quirky" characters. It was kinda like the A Dolls House arc of Sandman, but... not good
9) The Last Continent, Terry Pratchett
Discworld is always fantastic, and I've got a real fondness for the classic travelogue style rincewind ones.
10) Night Thoughts of a Classical Physicist, Russel McCormmach
The story of a German physicist who's dedicated his whole life to ether model physics and is realising his life's work is being disproved by recent advances... so a barrel of laughs. All about mortality, the fear of obsolescence, nationalism, and academia.
11) The Property, Rutu Modan
Indie comic about a girl learning about her family's heritage in Europe, lots of post war stuff and exploring "the old country". Very good
12) The Wake, Paul Kingsnorth
This was one of the real wins of this year, a story about the Norman occupation of Anglo Saxon England after 1066, and resistance thereof. Written in a conlang made to simulate old english, it seems totally unreadable, but you pick it up, and it makes the story infinitely more engrossing. A cool setting plus a whole other language wouldbe enough, but kingsnorth goes one further and makes it a savage deconstruction of nationalism and a beautifully painful exploration of tropes these sorts of books tend to embrace. Can't recommend enough.
13) Adventures of Hergé, Jean-luc Fromental
Biography of hergé written in the style of a tintin comic, a lot of fun
14) Carpé Jugulum, Terry Pratchett
Another Discworld, another classic. A lot of fun stuff with vampire tropes, although also a pretty serious discussion of "all evil comes from utilitarianism", which I felt didn't entirely fit, and I disagreed with. But again, the biggest criticism I've ever had of a Pratchett book is "his intelligent discussion of philosophy felt a little out of place", so not the end of the world
15) Fifth Elephant, Terry Pratchett
I went on a bit of a discworld binge here, another great one
16) Half a King, Joe Abercrombie
Great deconstructive low fantasy  novel, one of the many ASOIAF-esque books out there, and one of the few I've really enjoyed
17) Batman and Robin Eternal, D.C. Comics
Fun story about the batfamily, one of the rare bat-titles to really say "hey maybe this should be fun, you guys?"
18) Magical Game Time, Zac Gorman
Brilliant comics about video games, capture the real magic and freedom you found in games when you're a kid, the epic narratives you'd weave out of very simple Zelda games on the NES. makes me happy on a fundamental level. A lot of its available as webcomics, look it up, you won't regret it
19) The Truth, Terry Pratchett
Another brilliant Discworld book. Not much to say as there's a lot of these another all just consistently amongst the best books ever.
20) Wonder Woman Earth 1, Grant Morrison
Grant Morrison's always got a gift for finding the heart of a character, and he doesn't disappoint here. A lot of weird analysis of wonder woman as a feminist character, but he handles it pretty well overall.
21) & 22) Half the World, and Half a War, Joe Abercrombie
Parts 2 and 3 of the series, stays brilliant. Abercrombie is apparently best known for more adult stuff and this is more YA, but if anything that refines his writing - stops him being another grimdark game of thrones wannabe, and keeps it slightly more reconstructive and intelligent. Brilliant use of characters, the hero of the first book ends up almost the villain of the last, and all for entirely understandable reasons.
23) Machine of Death, various authors
A short story collection about a high concept: a simple blood test can tell you your cause of Death, but not the time or any specifics. A brilliant idea is explored in a lot of clever, beautiful, and hilarious ways.
24) The Last Hero, Terry Pratchett
Another brilliant Discworld, acting as a bridge between the classic fantasy of the older books, and the renaissance era politics and science of the later books - v poignant
25, 26, & 27) Harlequin, Vagabond, Heretic, Bernard Cornwell
Historical novels about the battle of creçy and the start of the 100 years war. Cornwells always good, although honestly these aren't his best. Pretty cool comparison between the chivalry of grain quests, and the reality of medieval warfare.
28) Long Halloween, Jeph Loeb
A classic batman, the story they based Dark Knight on, with a cool transition from down to earth organised crime of Year One to the zany madness of later batman
29) Little Brother, Cory Doctorow
A novel about post-911 culture, and counter culture rebellions against it. Fantastic novel, available as creative commons, so you can get it for free, so no excuses not to read! Very inspiring in that fuck Bush and fuck this war aesthetic, and Ihve a feeling it's gonna get real relevant in the coming years
30) Enders Game, Orson Scott Card
Pretty fantastic sci fi, analyses the psychological impacts of chosen one children saving the world, and the ethics of a "all the enemy are evil aliens" narrative. Obviously all this ethicality is a bit hypocritical from Orson Scott homophobia, so buy it second hand?
31) Black Guard, AJ Smith
Pretty cool fantasy, another faux ASOIAF type one, fairly straightforward, but plenty enjoyable
32) Deadpool vs Hawkeye
Pretty fun comic, read it on a plane back from Costa Rica, so I dont super remember it? But I enjoyed  
33) The Sleeper and the Spindle, Neil Gaiman
Very cool twisted fairy tale type thing, Neil Gaiman's always good, and beautiful Chris Riddel illustrations on top
34) Dial H for Hero, China Miéville
Great comic series, takes a simple idea (guy finds magic phone, when he dials it, he becomes a randomised superhero) and explores it in every possible way, becoming a full blown epic. Plus a scene where he becomes old timey racist heroes from the 60's and has to balance the good of doing superheroics vs the offensiveness of going out as "super chief" or whoever
35) Ravenspur, Conn Iggulden
Historical novel about the war of the roses. Iggulden is always very good, makes extremely readable stuff, and his war of the roses series is fantastic, a complex story made into an awesome action story. However, this last book isn't his best, it spends about 2/3rds of the book on a 6 month period where not much happens, then blazes through 10 years of action in no time at all, the pacing just felt a bit off. Still very good.
36) Howard the Duck, Chip Zdarsky
Very readable, very fun, very witty
37) Stonehenge, Bernard Cornwell
Historical novel about the building of Stonehenge, this is cornwell at his best, at border of very well researched intelligent history and the slightest hint of fantasy, making a brilliant story that brings history to life.
38) Black Orchid, Neil Gaiman
Slightly deconstructive superhero story, reads very much like a companion piece to Alan Moore's brilliant Swamp Thing
39) The Hartlepool Monkey, Wilfrid Lupano
Historical comic about a northern English town that hanged a shipwrecked monkey as a Napoleonic spy. A brutal read, exploring idiotic nationalism, well recommended
40) Turned Out Nice Again, Richard Mabry
Cute non-fiction musings on the meanings of weather and it's effects on our day to day life
41) The Heroes, Joe Abercrombie
Another deconstructive low fantasy, this time part of his adult series, which actually kind of works against it. Without the lighter edge, it can be a little bit of a downer. Nonetheless, well written, solid characterisation, and an excellent take-down of fantasy's belief in the glorious nature of war.
42) Thief of Time, Terry Pratchett
Another fantastic Discworld, fun, funny, and clever
43, 44, 45, 46, 47) A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons
Reread all of ASOIAF, absolutely fantastic, better on a second read. The first 3 are great as last time, plus all the foreshadowing that now makes sense. And 4&5, which I felt bit more ambivalent about the first time round, I've since read various analyses of (check out @asoiafuniversity), and I'd now consider them some of the best books I've ever read.
48) Gettysburg Address, Jonathon Hennessey
Absolutely brilliant comic, dissecting the Gettysburg address, using each line of it as a jumping off point to explore the history and philosophy of the civil war, incredibly high recommendation
49) Lazarus, Greg Rucka
A fantastic sci fi comic series, brilliant writing and characters, rucka is always great, and this is some of his best
50) Night Watch, Terry Pratchett
Another Discworld, but this one is even better than usual, this is one of the ones that stand out as serious business, much less comedic and much more epic than usual
51) A Brief History of Vice, Robert Evans
Hilarious and informative book from a cracked.com writer about use of drugs and alcohol through history, with recipes and recommendations for legal highs and drink recipes
52) Just City, Jo Walton
Sci fi / fantasy /philosophical novel, where great thinkers from throughout history are brought together to build Plato's perfect city. All about the clash between high ideals and practical reality. Very enjoyable, the sort of book where action scenes are philosophical debates.
53) Goldie Vance, Hope Larson
Fun cool progressive detective comic
54) Temeraire, Naomi Novak
A really fun fantasy novel with a concept that seems so simple, you don't know how no one's done it before. Essentially it's just the classical trope of dragon riders, but updated from pseudo medieval to the Napoleonic era, with all  associated tall ships and iron men and officer and a gentleman tropes
