Gotti took over the Gambino family after arranging the assassination of previous boss Paul Castellano in 1985. Subsequently, Gotti became a public figure, recognizable for his expensive, tailored overcoats, fancy scarfs, and his charismatic personality in front of news cameras. He was the target of numerous law enforcement investigations in the 1980s, and earned the nickname the "Teflon Don" after being acquitted in three high-profile trials. His downfall finally came in 1992 when he was found guilty of racketeering and five counts of murder, aided by his underboss Sammy Gravano agreeing to become an FBI informant, and sentenced to life without parole. In 1998, Gotti was diagnosed with throat cancer and sent to the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri for surgery. While the tumor was removed, the cancer was discovered to have returned two years later and Gotti was transferred back to Springfield, where he would spend the remainder of his life.
