(( BREAKING NEWS: here’s the 4k unfinished rp log from after this post, in which tarantulas temporarily adopted @medicalmurdersaurus, @kingasaurusrex, @surly-saurus, @tomatofaceasaurus, @elite-tracker, and @slvdge, and they wreaked absolute havoc on the Tor.
TAKE CHANCES, MAKE MISTAKES, GET MESSY!
Tarantulas
One thing led to another led to another led to another. Scooping Swoop up somehow got leaked to Grimlock, then Grimlock threatening him via comm inspired Tarantulas to adopt him too, which got leaked to Slag as well, who joined the party and essentially dragged Snarl and Sludge and Slash along for the ride. Tarantulas hopped through one portal after another herding them into the Tor, and mysteriously enough, they all seemed completely fine with the impromptu field trip. It was surreal how quickly and painlessly it came to pass - and all the more foreboding for what would probably follow.
The room the Dinobots were plopped into was mainly clear of equipment, although it had a decent serving of webbing slung around here and there. One might mistake it for a foyer of sorts, given the paths branching off toward more dim destinations. Strange sounds and smells emanated from far too many directions.
…In hindsight, Tarantulas would probably find that this hadn’t been the wisest of places to drop the Dinobots into the Tor for the first time. Popping back into the foyer at last, he’d just have to see the results of his poor decision for himself, now wouldn’t he?
Swoop
On the plus side, getting kidnapped gives Swoop a chance to look around while his siblings are herded up. On the down side, getting kidnapped gives Swoop a chance to look around while his siblings are herded up.
The high ceilings are far too tempting. He has to know what is up there. Up where? Up there.
Tarantulas
Swoop's first guess is probably right - webs. More webs, loosely spun. Probably a pretty fantastic jungle gym, a thought that's definitely occurred to Tarantulas as well.
Grimlock
Grimlock had only been outside his own verse a handful of times. Notably only to see the Prime that wasn't Prime, but regardless, this place is new. With new smells. And new sounds. And several new sights. He squints through his visor, deciding quickly he doesn't like it.
Which is only a half lie to himself.
He's curious as hell. Enough so that he reaches out to start poking at the various webbing strands littering the area-
And immediately decided it was interesting enough to start pulling at. Weird how it looked like string but felt nothing like it. Should probably take some home. It'd look cool in Kraken's cage.
Swoop
Swoop circles the room once, twice, a third time for good measure. In the last pass, he dips down past Grimlock and pulls up sharply so he can get enough momentum to fling himself up to the highest webs while transforming. He shrieks all the way up to his new perch.
Sludge
Swoop chose to go up, but Sludge? Sludge chose to go left, and investigate this entirely new place from the ground level. There's weird smells coming from that way, he has to know what they are, immediately. And possibly touch whatever's making those weird smells.
Absolutely touch whatever makes the weird smells.
Snarl
Snarl is just kinda staying put exactly where he ended up.
Tarantulas
The threads aren't really sticky - most of them, anyhow - but they do pull and pull and pull, and never seem to actually snap. The ones on the ceiling are thicker and have less give, which probably benefits Swoop (though if he chooses wisely he could certainly have a bungee-jumping adventure). Grimlock, however, probably won't be able to snag a sample of silk unless he slices instead of pulls.
If Sludge wanders far enough down the hall to the left, he'll reach a room with massive vats of various organic and inorganic fluids. Science lab or buffet? Who can tell.
What does it really matter what the original intent was, honestly.
Snarl
This wasn't part of his plan for the day. Not that he ever had much of a plan, but he definitely hadn't been ready for getting dragged along to be a part of the Tor.
Kinda looked like they just traded one dark rocky space, for another dark-ish space.
Swoop
There is some WWE off the ropes flinging going on towards the ceiling. This is a great time and Swoop is here for it, except... since when do his brothers come on his weird outings? That's new. Swoop springs towards the machinery nearest Snarl, landing with a CLANG.
Snarl
A lesser bot who DIDN'T LIVE WITH SWOOP 24-7 would probably be startled.
Grimlock
He's coming to that conclusion himself, though his considerable strength had managed to pull the elastic-like strands a decent way out of their original positioning. Now he wants this even more. Wheeljack could probably make some awesome weapon or maybe just something all around cool for the Dinocave.
He's thinking punching bags.
A hammock would be kinda cool too. He's seen those on tv and they at least look like a good time. It's never going to happen, however, unless he manages to get some of this stuff back home.
So without further ado, he reaches to his back to disconnect the base of his sword and activate it. When in doubt-slice it.
Swoop
"SNARL!" the pterosaur giggles. "You go a place. An INSIDE place!" It's difficult for someone as cartoonish as Swoop to come across over the top enough for the sarcasm to be clear. But, by god, he's trying.
Tarantulas
Thus begins the damage that Tarantulas will eventually have to repair and/or clean up later. Swoop's definitely leaving claw marks on that machinery.
Snarl
Snarl levels him with a look as flat as stale water. "What inside place?"
You have a chance to sell it, Swoop.
Swoop
Swoop throws his arms out Robert Downey Jr style to illustrate the Tor. "Dunno!"
Sludge
Vats! Full of stuff!
None of which he recognizes, but they're interesting colors and he's pretty sure that red flavor is the best flavor for anything. Spike had said that once. Sludge peered between the vats for a moment, trying to locate one that was red. And once he finds one, he carefully sets his cat down on the floor out of the way, and promptly shoves his face into said vat.
It's time... to lick the red flavor.
Snarl
Well. That meant his options were play statue exactly where he was which was tempting or go along with Swoop.... who might screech and pick at his armor until he does anyway.
Path of least resistance it is. Massive shoulders rise and fall in a shrug. "Kay. We go."
Tarantulas
Red flavor = probably synthetic blood, maybe, sort of. Does Sludge know what hemoglobin and plasma taste like? If so, it'll definitely be familiar, and nothing that'll affect his systems. His cat might find the vat strange, though.
And Grimlock can certainly have at, and with moderate success. Expect much chastising from Tarantulas once he does arrive and finds missing chunks of webbing, though.
Swoop
Nice. Another victory for Swoop.
"Us goooooooo-" He spun in a circle and then pointed in an arbitrary direction. "-thata way!"
Snarl
Good of a place as any. "Kay." Off they go then.
Tarantulas
Lots of static coming from "thata way." They'll have to open a few very-locked doors before they get to the source of it all.
Snarl
Hm. A door.
Fire time.
Sludge
Blegh. Spike was wrong, red flavor is worst flavor. Sludge is going to try the ominously glowing purple flavor instead. Maybe that one tastes better? Hopefully Tarantulas won't mind that he knocked over the blue vat on his way there.
Snarl
...This door is being very stubborn for fire time.  Clearly that means there needs to be MORE FIRE TIME.
Swoop
Swoop is pro fire. He is always pro fire. But he's also pro comedy...
.... so he's going to go over and poke buttons to see if he can get the door open despite his brother.
Tarantulas
Blue vat leaves a sticky mess on the floor that Sludge won't enjoy stepping in, mostly because he'd get, well, stuck. Glowing purple flavor is mysteriously void of scent and taste, but leaves a mild tingle wherever it touches.
Snarl
At least the door is a little more pliable than before. So while Swoop is off CLEARLY not helping, Snarl decides to take matters into his own hands.
Literally into his hands. He starts beating on the door with his fists.
Sludge
The tingle is kind of cool. Let's try some more of that and see if he can make his insides tingle.
Tarantulas
The door, meanwhile, holds against the fire, but the buttons nearby start to malfunction under the combo of radiant heat & ridiculous mashing. They're doing Tarantulas a favor by finding out the flaws in his security, right? In the end the fists are what does the door in first, and they're on to the next one.
And yes, Sludge, your insides are definitely tingling now. That might be an unfortunate distraction from the fact that the other parts that WERE tingling are no longer feeling ANYTHING now.
Snarl
One last hit, and the poor door finally gives, getting essentially blown off its frame.
Snarl
"Open."
Swoop
"You Snarl DID IT!" : >
Snarl
"You Swoop and Me Snarl go to 'that way' now."
Swoop
Swoop dashes through the door and immediately looks up to see if there's more stuff to play with.
Swoop
Snarl follows along at a more leisurely, lumbering pace.
Tarantulas
Nope, just another hallway leading six possible directions. The static's coming from behind another door. Suuuuuper tempting, right?
Sludge
Well, his insides feel really tingly and it's super cool. But he feels weirdly off balance with half his face no longer feeling anything. Maybe he should leave the rest of the vats alone now. He'll come check them out again later. Aaaaafter he's checked what other rooms are in this hallway.
Snarl
"...Me hear noise."
"Swoop, that you?"
"You Swoop weird noise allllll the time."
Swoop
Swoop runs a circle, going past each possible option before sliding Tom Cruise style into Snarl's side.
"Nope! It not Swoop."
Tarantulas
Meanwhile, guess who's busy conjuring another bridge back to the Tor, finally. Oh dear.
Snarl
Snarl, squints and scrutinizes Swoop. Not that staring at him suspiciously does much for figuring out SOUND.
Slash
Slash finally makes it to the party, she looks around at what is going on so far, seems all her brothers have wondered off to do their own thing. She probably should be a good dino and wait for her leader Slag, but all the new scent and surroundings where to tempting to stay still for too long!
Slash was soon sniffing around and collecting as many new scents as she can, it was time to explore!
Grimlock
Grimlock has a large, triumphant handful of the strange white stringy stuff. After much hacking has been had to get it that far. He's, for the moment, content and immediately wraps it around his arm for safe keeping. Besides, it makes his arm thicker by just that much that clotheslining Slag is going to be hilarious later.
That done, he notices his brothers have, as they're wont to do, wandered off. Well shit. Whose scent does he follow- or does he follow the odd chemical smell that burns at his ol factory sensors in a way that's not entirely unpleasant....
His brothers would be fine. Odd smells it is then.
Swoop
For a genuine moment, Swoop lets Snarl listen. That is his thinking face after all. But Swoop can only stand it so long before he just.... chirp!
Snarl
Oh, hey, the weird noise is getting louder. Kinda sounds like the TV when the channels don't feel like working. Or something like that.
Nope. Was probably Swoop.
Tarantulas
Sludge's exploration supplies him with various rewards - rooms full of more organic smells and sights, something that looks like an operating theater, then a dissection lab that definitely has specimens still displayed. Ick.
Swoop
"This Spiderbot, uh, house."
Sludge
The poor dinobot has no idea what an operating theater is, but it's got sharp pointy things and shiny things so that's where he's gonna play now. Some of these look like things Ratchet uses. Where's Swoop? He'd know what they were.
"SWOOP!"
Tarantulas
Sludge's yell makes things shake and clatter a little. Nothing's damaged.... yet.
Also, 'house' is a generous term.
Slash
Slash decided to follow the scent to the vats she can smell Sludge has been here also, she wondered over to the vats to get a closer look and sniff only to step into the blue sticky mess and tumble forward into it.
Tarantulas
Grimlock's sense of smell leads him in a similar direction to Sludge, but down a different hall. It'll take him a long time to get to the source of the smell, but there's a straight path, and a green glow far, far off at the end.
Snarl
"Spiderbot have loud house."
"...."
"Wait that sound like him Sludge."
Slash
Slash is stuck! The blue goop clings to her if she tries to pull away.
Snarl
Hmmm. Sludge or the door. Decisions.
He looks to Swoop. ????
Slash
Slash is pulling! SHE WANTS OUT!! "ME SLASH STUCK!"
Swoop
Swoop looks back where Sludge's bellowing came from, then up at Snarl.
"Him dead."
Snarl
Well that settles that.
"Kay. We open door thing now."
Grimlock
Ugh. The smell was no longer as pleasant the closer he got to it. It stung, actually. Grimlock's face was set in a grimace under his mask and for half a second he almost turns back around. Then his optics narrowed and he growled. Giving up was for LOSERS. And Grimlock was no loser.
The green glow was more of a pinprick in the distance at the moment and Grimlock took off at a run, lumbering steps echoing down the narrow space.
Swoop
Swoop bobbled his head in agreement. Later, losers.
Snarl
There are more doors to break down. Like this one. Fire Time part 2.
Swoop
Swoop transforms into pterosaur mode and joins in the melting.
Tarantulas
The fire changes color when it hits the door, but it's slowly successful in melting it.
Swoop
He gaaaaaaaaaaasssps! <3
Snarl
Snarl stops immediately because did you see that?
Swoop
"AWESOME!!"
Sludge
Hmm. Swoop isn't coming. Shame. Now he has to go looking for his little brother. He gets to his feet and makes his way back to where he'd started, to pick a new hallway. Is he down this way?
Snarl
He's looking between Swoop and the door in quick succession.
Slash
Slash struggles to pull herself free of the blue mess on the floor, her claws start to heat up for more SLICING MELTING ACTION! "GRRR! ME SLASH WANT OUT!"
Snarl
Then he levels his brother with the most serious look that's ever graced his face. "Us burn ALL things. Find more colors."
Slag
Slag, for his part, waited to see where all his various brothers were going... and then went in whatever direction they weren't, plodding along leisurely with his drone pet/toy jingling about beside and somewhat under him when he pauses to scoot Gong Fat back between his front legs.
Gotta keep his toy from getting squashed or burned or otherwise Dino'd.
Swoop
Swoop lets out a victory shriek and flaps hard enough to get himself a ways off the ground. "YAAAAHHH!"
Tarantulas
Heated claws are super effective on the blue goop - it seems to melt as Slash slices, although it does leave a lot of residue on her as well.
Slag's adventuring leads to a far less interesting path than the others - it's mostly consoles, servers, and computer hardware in the rooms down his route.
Grimlock
Aaaagh even RUNNING was taking too much time! Grimlock growled, getting quite irritated. It was time to find a shortcut. He eyes the wall next to him, tapping on it.
The rearing his fist back to slam it into the surface with as much power as he can.
Slash
Slash was finally free and quickly gained as much distance from the blue goop as she can, her movement a little slow due to the residue left on her. She was totally leaving claw marks in the floor as she ran in a random direction.
ALSO SLASH SAW YOU SLUDGE JUST IGNORE HER >:C
Tarantulas
Also, tip to Swoop and Snarl: although all the doors in THIS hallway burn the same color, OTHER hallways might not. Have at it.
Grimlock immediately succeeds in denting the wall next to him, and there's a groaning rumble a few seconds afterward.
Grimlock
.........
Well, it did SOMETHING.
Time to hit it again.
Snarl
Snarl proceeds to be flamethrower, and immediately forgets to actually go through the door they demolished
Slag
Oh. Buttons.
Slag doesn't really read much to know what the buttons do but, they're colorful. And some of them glow. And they have TVs on them. He supposes he can find something to watch.
Maybe spider has movies. Maybe spider has Netflix.
One stumpy triceratops foot plops gracelessly on the console, sort of pawing at the keyboard to try to make something happen.
Slash
Slash now wishes she can flamethrower breath to get all this blue goop off of her, it was slowing her down! She doesn't like this place anymore it's dumb!
Slash finally stopped running to look around, just where was she now? She'll sniff the air to see where her brothers had run off to.
Tarantulas
Grimlock manages to rend the metal of the wall a bit, but only enough to see through. It's inky black, wherever that is, and smells like... nothing?
......
Sludge
Swoop is decidedly not down this new hallway, Sludge decides eventually. But there's more places to see, so he'll keep walking. If the other hallway had interesting things, this one should too.
Snarl
Follow the burning, Sludge.
Sludge
Why follow the burning, when he can make his own burning?
Snarl
Follow the scent of scorched metal and mania.
Snarl
ALSO A GOOD OPTION.
Tarantulas
Spider does not have Netflix. Spider has a security system on his console that requires eight levels of clearance before anything actually happens. Want to give it a shot, Slag? It'll make tons of interesting colors and sounds.
Grimlock
How does something smell like nothing? Grimlock's vents huff as he tries to peer through the hole. His curiosity is torn now between this seemingly empty space that smells like nothing and the challenge that was the green glow in the distance.
Slag
Huh. Colors are happening. Maybe it's a game?
Slash
Slash will follow the burning.
Slag
He can probably figure out the button combo to make it do the thing. Keysmashing usually works back home. This is probably the same.
Sludge
He can sort of hear Swoop and Snarl burning things, though. Somewhere to the right. Does he want to backtrack? Not really. So he's going to go the Quicker Route and start spitting fire at the wall.
It'll have to give way eventually.
Snarl
Some of the doors are just opening and closing now. Weird.
Swoop
The problem with a hallway is that he can't full on circle and swoop in the air. He'll have to make do with brief strafing runs. Snarl gets well and truly covered in fire, which is probably a nice bonus to all the activity. Toasty!
Snarl
Snarl, wreathed in flames, and fueled by destructive impulses is a fearsome thing to behold.
Actually that's a lie. He's looks confused
Why are the doors just opening like that now? Are they trying to get away from the burning?
'Cause, Ha. Like that'll happen.
More fire.
Tarantulas
Definitely not the same, Slag. This one eventually blacks out completely after too much keysmashing, since the chances of one Dinofoot following the pattern of eight Spiderpaws is slim to none.
Grimlock
Curiosity has given way to frustration. Guess what?
That wall's coming down if he has to break his knuckles doing it.
Swoop
Swoop thoughtlessly clips his own wing on a wall and eats quite a bit of floor before sliding to a stop. "KEHEHE!"
Snarl
Hmmmm.
Slash
OK one the doors almost closed on Slash's tail! NOT COOL!
Slash will just... Well slash at the controls of the door, maybe that will stop it from acting weird!
Slag
Oh. Broke it.
............
WHELP. Time to leave the scene of the crime. Last time he broke a console full of buttons he got buried alive so maybe he'll just wander off and have no idea who broke the thing.
Snarl
Snarl is gonna pick Swoop up, and toss him through one of the doors when they open.
He's aerodynamic. He'll make it.
Probably.
Swoop
Wheee! Off he goes! "KAHAH!"
Slag
C'mon Gong Fat let's find something to chew on.
Tarantulas
Knuckles needn't be broken - the wall comes down eventually, and Grimlock gets the opportunity to venture into a space that's completely open, aside from long metal supports stretching seemingly-randomly through the darkness. He can certainly hop onto one or another from the hole he's ripped in the wall.
Slash gets a small explosion for her efforts, but the door doesn't reopen.
Sludge
This was is taking too long to melt for Sludge's liking. Time to bash it headfirst. Good thing he still can't feel his face.
Grimlock
He does just that, pulling his blade out again to set it on fire. So he can see, you understand.
Slash
Good that will teach the door one!
Slash will then continue to follow the burning scent until she spots Snarl, "You Snarl set me Slash on fire. Get dumb blue goop off."
Tarantulas
Sludge succeeds! This wall is REALLY thick though, so it might take quite a bit of headbashing to make it through.
Sludge
He has more than enough headbashing to go around for this wall.
Tarantulas
The first thing Slag and Gong Fat chew on shocks their respective mouths hard enough to (hopefully) be a deterrent to chewing more.
Swoop
Swoop is either meeting more floor or going for an impromptu flight. Either way, he is down.
Slash
Ok new plan, start scratching all the blue goop off!
Slag
Ouch. Well it's definitely not a cabbage for shredding which is deterrent enough for Gong Fat.
Slag, however, is a bit miffed at the shocky stingy ouch in his mouth, and retaliates with a bolt of laser from the tips of his horns. SCREW YOU, SHOCKY THING.
Grimlock
So Grimlock can only remember having to do so much jumping one other time in his life. Somewhere in the Rockies. It sucked. This isn't much better.
But hey, everything echoes here and everyone always accused him of loving to hear his own voice. It's gonna roar into that void right now.
Snarl
Did it work though?
"You Swoop see things?"
Sludge
Persistent headbashing has led to a lot of ringing in his head, but if it opened the wall, then he will consider it worth it.
Tarantulas
Finally - finally. Tarantulas is ready to round up the Dinokids and show them around their new home. He can't wait. It's going to be fantastic.
...But they're not here in the foyer. And there are at least three paths of destruction in different directions, all of which sound like no one is up to any good. What in the WORLD is he going to do with these dangerous toddlers?
He's never had much reason to use it before, but he's ridiculously glad he installed the PA system now. Tarantulas's voice is unbelievably cheery as it echoes in every room of the Tor.
"I trust you're making yourselves at home!"
Snarl
!!!!
Sludge
!!!! Voices from the ceiling!
Snarl
LOUD YELLING AND IT'S NOT THEM, WHAT?
Slag
Head voices.
Head voices everywhere.
It's echoing.
His head isn't that empty. Shit's not supposed to echo.
Slash
Ok the halls are talking!
Slag
Where is that coming from???
Swoop
Swoop pushes himself up from the floor and looks at the PA. "SPIDERBOT!"
He cackles. ::Hi, Spiderbot.::
Snarl
Snarl yells to the void, "This not Dinocave. You dumb?"
Grimlock
Now the place is echoing back at him ! And it sounded like Spiderbot! Grimlock isn't a fan of hide and seek on the best days.
"WHERE YOU SPIDERBOT HIDING! COME FACE ME GRIMLOCK!"
Slag
Slag is just gonna skeedaddle further away from the scene of his crime. He didn't do it. You can't prove shit, echoing head voice. "Me Slag not at home. Me Slag here "
Snarl
It's a complete accident how correct his sentence is "This is a TOR."
Sludge
Sludge looks up, trying to find the source of the new voice. Spiderbot?
Slash
"THIS PLACE DUMB!!" Slash snarls. Ok she’s going to do some Climbing now.
It’s time to find a way out of this dumb place.
---
(tl;dr - the Dinobots tear up the Tor and Tarantulas adores them during every second of it, until he’s somehow forced to give the destructive children back to their proper guardians.)

Chapter 22
Excerpt from Robert Jay Lifton’s excellent book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism:
A discussion of what is most central in the thought reform environment can lead us to a more general consideration of the psychology of human zealotry. For in identifying, on the basis of this study of thought reform, features common to all expressions of ideological totalism, I wish to suggest a set of criteria against which any environment may be judged - a basis for answering the ever-recurring question: "Isn't this just like 'brainwashing'?"
These criteria consist of eight psychological themes which are predominant within the social field of the thought reform milieu. Each has a totalistic quality; each depend upon an equally absolute philosophical assumption; and each mobilizes certain individual emotional tendencies, mostly of a polarizing nature. In combination they create an atmosphere which may temporarily energize or exhilarate, but which at the same time poses the gravest of human threats.
1. Milieu Control
The most basic feature of the thought reform environment, the psychological current upon which all else depends, is the control of human communication. Through this milieu control the totalist environment seeks to establish domain over not only the individual's communication with the outside (all that he sees and hears, reads or writes, experiences, and expresses), but also - in its penetration of his inner life - over what we may speak of as his communication with himself. It creates an atmosphere uncomfortably reminiscent of George Orwell's 1984.
Such milieu control never succeeds in becoming absolute, and its own human apparatus can - when permeated by outside information - become subject to discordant "noise" beyond that of any mechanical apparatus. To totalist administrators, however, such occurrences are no more than evidences of "incorrect" use of the apparatus. For they look upon milieu control as a just and necessary policy, one which need not be kept secret: thought reform participants may be in doubt as to who is telling what to whom, but the fact that extensive information about everyone is being conveyed to the authorities is always known. At the center of this self-justification is their assumption of omniscience, their conviction that reality is their exclusive possession. Having experienced the impact of what they consider to be an ultimate truth (and having the need to dispel any possible inner doubts of their own), they consider it their duty to create an environment containing no more and no less than this "truth." In order to be the engineers of the human soul, they must first bring it under full observational control.
2. Mystical Manipulation
The inevitable next step after milieu control is extensive personal manipulation. This manipulation assumes a no-holds-barred character, and uses every possible device at the milieu's command, no matter how bizarre or painful. Initiated from above, it seeks to provoke specific patterns of behavior and emotion in such a way that these will appear to have arisen spontaneously, directed as it is by an ostensibly omniscient group, must assume, for the manipulated, a near-mystical quality.
Ideological totalists do not pursue this approach solely for the purpose of maintaining a sense of power over others. Rather they are impelled by a special kind of mystique which not only justifies such manipulations, but makes them mandatory. Included in this mystique is a sense of "higher purpose," of having "directly perceived some imminent law of social development," and of being themselves the vanguard of this development. By thus becoming the instruments of their own mystique, they create a mystical aura around the manipulating institutions - the Party, the Government, the Organization. They are the agents "chosen" (by history, by God, or by some other supernatural force) to carry out the "mystical imperative," the pursuit of which must supersede all considerations of decency or of immediate human welfare. Similarly, any thought or action which questions the higher purpose is considered to be stimulated by a lower purpose, to be backward, selfish, and petty in the face of the great, overriding mission. This same mystical imperative produces the apparent extremes of idealism and cynicism which occur in connection with the manipulations of any totalist environment: even those actions which seem cynical in the extreme can be seen as having ultimate relationship to the "higher purpose."
At the level of the individual person, the psychological responses to this manipulative approach revolve about the basic polarity of trust and mistrust. One is asked to accept these manipulations on a basis of ultimate trust (or faith): "like a child in the arms of its mother." He who trusts in this degree can experience the manipulations within the idiom of the mystique behind them: that is, he may welcome their mysteriousness, find pleasure in their pain, and feel them to be necessary for the fulfillment of the "higher purpose" which he endorses as his own. But such elemental trust is difficult to maintain; and even the strongest can be dissipated by constant manipulation.
When trust gives way to mistrust (or when trust has never existed) the higher purpose cannot serve as adequate emotional sustenance. The individual then responds to the manipulations through developing what I shall call the psychology of the pawn. Feeling himself unable to escape from forces more powerful than himself, he subordinates everything to adapting himself to them. He becomes sensitive to all kinds of cues, expert at anticipating environmental pressures, and skillful in riding them in such a way that his psychological energies merge with the tide rather than turn painfully against himself. This requires that he participate actively in the manipulation of others, as well as in the endless round of betrayals and self-betrayals which are required.
But whatever his response - whether he is cheerful in the face of being manipulated, deeply resentful, or feels a combination of both - he has been deprived of the opportunity to exercise his capacities for self-expression and independent action.
3. The Demand for Purity
In the thought reform milieu, as in all situations of ideological totalism, the experiential world is sharply divided into the pure and the impure, into the absolutely good and the absolutely evil. The good and the pure are of course those ideas, feelings, and actions which are consistent with the totalist ideology and policy; anything else is apt to be relegated to the bad and the impure. Nothing human is immune from the flood of stern moral judgments. All "taints" and "poisons" which contribute to the existing state of impurity must be searched out and eliminated.
The philosophical assumption underlying this demand is that absolute purity is attainable, and that anything done to anyone in the name of this purity is ultimately moral. In actual practice, however, no one is really expected to achieve such perfection. Nor can this paradox be dismissed as merely a means of establishing a high standard to which all can aspire. Thought reform bears witness to its more malignant consequences: for by defining and manipulating the criteria of purity, and then by conducting an all-out war upon impurity, the ideological totalists create a narrow world of guilt and shame. This is perpetuated by an ethos of continuous reform, a demand that one strive permanently and painfully for something which not only does not exist but is in fact alien to the human condition.
At the level of the relationship between individual and environment, the demand for purity creates what we may term a guilty milieu and a shaming milieu. Since each man's impurities are deemed sinful and potentially harmful to himself and to others, he is, so to speak, expected to expect punishment - which results in a relationship of guilt and his environment. Similarly, when he fails to meet the prevailing standards in casting out such impurities, he is expected to expect humiliation and ostracism - thus establishing a relationship of shame with his milieu. Moreover, the sense of guilt and the sense of shame become highly-valued: they are preferred forms of communication, objects of public competition, and the basis for eventual bonds between the individual and his totalist accusers. One may attempt to simulate them for a while, but the subterfuge is likely to be detected, and it is safer to experience them genuinely.
People vary greatly in their susceptibilities to guilt and shame, depending upon patterns developed early in life. But since guilt and shame are basic to human existence, this variation can be no more than a matter of degree. Each person is made vulnerable through his profound inner sensitivities to his own limitations and to his unfulfilled potential; in other words, each is made vulnerable through his existential guilt. Since ideological totalists become the ultimate judges of good and evil within their world, they are able to use these universal tendencies toward guilt and shame as emotional levers for their controlling and manipulative influences. They become the arbiters of existential guilt, authorities without limit in dealing with others' limitations. And their power is nowhere more evident than in their capacity to "forgive."
The individual thus comes to apply the same totalist polarization of good and evil to his judgments of his own character: he tends to imbue certain aspects of himself with excessive virtue, and condemn even more excessively other personal qualities - all according to their ideological standing. He must also look upon his impurities as originating from outside influences - that is, from the ever-threatening world beyond the closed, totalist ken. Therefore, one of his best way to relieve himself of some of his burden of guilt is to denounce, continuously and hostilely, these same outside influences. The more guilty he feels, the greater his hatred, and the more threatening they seem. In this manner, the universal psychological tendency toward "projection" is nourished and institutionalized, leading to mass hatreds, purges of heretics, and to political and religious holy wars. Moreover, once an individual person has experienced the totalist polarization of good and evil, he has great difficulty in regaining a more balanced inner sensitivity to the complexities of human morality. For these is no emotional bondage greater than that of the man whose entire guilt potential - neurotic and existential - has become the property of ideological totalists.
4. The Cult of Confession
Closely related to the demand for absolute purity is an obsession with personal confession. Confession is carried beyond its ordinary religious, legal, and therapeutic expressions to the point of becoming a cult in itself. There is the demand that one confess to crimes one has not committed, to sinfulness that is artificially induced, in the name of a cure that is arbitrarily imposed. Such demands are made possible not only by the ubiquitous human tendencies toward guilt and shame but also by the need to give expression to these tendencies. In totalist hands, confession becomes a means of exploiting, rather than offering solace for, these vulnerabilities.
The totalist confession takes on a number of special meanings. It is first a vehicle for the kind of personal purification which we have just discussed, a means of maintaining a perpetual inner emptying or psychological purge of impurity; this purging milieu enhances the totalists' hold upon existential guilt. Second, it is an act of symbolic self-surrender, the expression of the merging of individual and environment. Third, it is a means of maintaining an ethos of total exposure - a policy of making public (or at least known to the Organization) everything possible about the life experiences, thoughts, and passions of each individual, and especially those elements which might be regarded as derogatory.
The assumption underlying total exposure (besides those which relate to the demand for purity) is the environment's claim to total ownership of each individual self within it. Private ownership of the mind and its products - of imagination or of memory - becomes highly immoral. The accompanying rationale (or rationalization) is familiar, the milieu has attained such a perfect state of enlightenment that any individual retention of ideas or emotions has become anachronistic.
The cult of confession can offer the individual person meaningful psychological satisfactions in the continuing opportunity for emotional catharsis and for relief of suppressed guilt feelings, especially insofar as these are associated with self-punitive tendencies to get pleasure from personal degradation. More than this, the sharing of confession enthusiasms can create an orgiastic sense of "oneness," of the most intense intimacy with fellow confessors and of the dissolution of self into the great flow of the Movement. And there is also, at least initially, the possibility of genuine self-revelation and of self-betterment through the recognition that "the thing that has been exposed is what I am."
But as totalist pressures turn confession into recurrent command performances, the element of histrionic public display takes precedence over genuine inner experience. Each man becomes concerned with the effectiveness of his personal performance, and this performance sometimes comes to serve the function of evading the very emotions and ideas about which one feels most guilty - confirming the statement by one of Camus' characters that "authors of confessions write especially to avoid confessing, to tell nothing of what they know." The difficulty, of course, lies in the inevitable confusion which takes place between the actor's method and his separate personal reality, between the performer and the "real me."
In this sense, the cult of confession has effects quite the reverse of its ideal of total exposure: rather than eliminating personal secrets, it increases and intensifies them. In any situation the personal secret has two important elements: first, guilty and shameful ideas which one wishes to suppress in order to prevent their becoming known by others or their becoming too prominent in one's own awareness; and second, representations of parts of oneself too precious to be expressed except when alone or when involved in special loving relationships formed around this shared secret world. Personal secrets are always maintained in opposition to inner pressures toward self-exposure. The totalist milieu makes contact with these inner pressures through its own obsession with the expose and the unmasking process. As a result old secrets are revived and new ones proliferate; the latter frequently consist of resentments toward or doubts about the Movement, or else are related to aspects of identity still existing outside of the prescribed ideological sphere. Each person becomes caught up in a continuous conflict over which secrets to preserve and which to surrender, over ways to reveal lesser secrets in order to protect more important ones; his own boundaries between the secret and the known, between the public and the private, become blurred. And around one secret, or a complex of secrets, there may revolve an ultimate inner struggle between resistance and self-surrender.
Finally, the cult of confession makes it virtually impossible to attain a reasonable balance between worth and humility. The enthusiastic and aggressive confessor becomes like Camus' character whose perpetual confession is his means of judging others: "[I]…practice the profession of penitent to be able to end up as a judge…the more I accuse myself, the more I have a right to judge you." The identity of the "judge-penitent" thus becomes a vehicle for taking on some of the environment's arrogance and sense of omnipotence. Yet even this shared omnipotence cannot protect him from the opposite (but not unrelated) feelings of humiliation and weakness, feelings especially prevalent among those who remain more the enforced penitent than the all-powerful judge.
5. The "Sacred Science"
The totalist milieu maintains an aura of sacredness around its basic dogma, holding it out as an ultimate moral vision for the ordering of human existence. This sacredness is evident in the prohibition (whether or not explicit) against the questioning of basic assumptions, and in the reverence which is demanded for the originators of the Word, the present bearers of the Word, and the Word itself. While thus transcending ordinary concerns of logic, however, the milieu at the same time makes an exaggerated claim of airtight logic, of absolute "scientific" precision. Thus the ultimate moral vision becomes an ultimate science; and the man who dares to criticize it, or to harbor even unspoken alternative ideas, becomes not only immoral and irreverent, but also "unscientific." In this way, the philosopher kings of modern ideological totalism reinforce their authority by claiming to share in the rich and respected heritage of natural science.
The assumption here is not so much that man can be God, but rather that man's ideas can be God: that an absolute science of ideas (and implicitly, an absolute science of man) exists, or is at least very close to being attained; that this science can be combined with an equally absolute body of moral principles; and that the resulting doctrine is true for all men at all times. Although no ideology goes quite this far in overt statement, such assumptions are implicit in totalist practice.
At the level of the individual, the totalist sacred science can offer much comfort and security. Its appeal lies in its seeming unification of the mystical and the logical modes of experience (in psychoanalytic terms, of the primary and secondary thought processes). For within the framework of the sacred science, and sweeping, non-rational "insights." Since the distinction between the logical and the mystical is, to begin with, artificial and man-made, an opportunity for transcending it can create an extremely intense feeling of truth. But the posture of unquestioning faith - both rationally and non-rationally derived - is not easy to sustain, especially if one discovers that the world of experience is not nearly as absolute as the sacred science claims it to be.
Yet so strong a hold can the sacred science achieve over his mental processes that if one begins to feel himself attracted to ideas which either contradict or ignore it, he may become guilty and afraid. His quest for knowledge is consequently hampered, since in the name of science he is prevented from engaging in the receptive search for truth which characterizes the genuinely scientific approach. And his position is made more difficult by the absence, in a totalist environment, of any distinction between the sacred and the profane: there is no thought or action which cannot be related to the sacred science. To be sure, one can usually find areas of experience outside its immediate authority; but during periods of maximum totalist activity (like thought reform) any such areas are cut off, and there is virtually no escape from the milieu's ever-pressing edicts and demands. Whatever combination of continued adherence, inner resistance, or compromise co-existence the individual person adopts toward this blend of counterfeit science and back-door religion, it represents another continuous pressure toward personal closure, toward avoiding, rather than grappling with, the kinds of knowledge and experience necessary for genuine self-expression and for creative development.
6. Loading the Language
The language of the totalist environment is characterized by the thought-terminating cliché. The most far-reaching and complex of human problems are compressed into brief, highly reductive, definitive-sounding phrases, easily memorized and easily expressed. These become the start and finish of any ideological analysis. In [Chinese Communist] thought reform, for instance, the phrase "bourgeois mentality" is used to encompass and critically dismiss ordinarily troublesome concerns like the quest for individual expression, the exploration of alternative ideas, and the search for perspective and balance in political judgments. And in addition to their function as interpretive shortcuts, these cliches become what Richard Weaver has called "ultimate terms" : either "god terms," representative of ultimate good; or "devil terms," representative of ultimate evil. In [Chinese Communist] thought reform, "progress," "progressive," "liberation," "proletarian standpoints" and "the dialectic of history" fall into the former category; "capitalist," "imperialist," "exploiting classes," and "bourgeois" (mentality, liberalism, morality, superstition, greed) of course fall into the latter. Totalist language then, is repetitiously centered on all-encompassing jargon, prematurely abstract, highly categorical, relentlessly judging, and to anyone but its most devoted advocate, deadly dull: in Lionel Trilling's phrase, "the language of nonthought."
To be sure, this kind of language exists to some degree within any cultural or organizational group, and all systems of belief depend upon it. It is in part an expression of unity and exclusiveness: as Edward Sapir put it, "'He talks like us' is equivalent to saying 'He is one of us.'" The loading is much more extreme in ideological totalism, however, since the jargon expresses the claimed certitudes of the sacred science. Also involved is an underlying assumption that language - like all other human products - can be owned and operated by the Movement. No compunctions are felt about manipulating or loading it in any fashion; the only consideration is its usefulness to the cause.
For an individual person, the effect of the language of ideological totalism can be summed up in one word: constriction. He is, so to speak, linguistically deprived; and since language is so central to all human experience, his capacities for thinking and feeling are immensely narrowed. This is what Hu meant when he said, "using the same pattern of words for so long…you feel chained." Actually, not everyone exposed feels chained, but in effect everyone is profoundly confined by these verbal fetters. As in other aspects of totalism, this loading may provide an initial sense of insight and security, eventually followed by uneasiness. This uneasiness may result in a retreat into a rigid orthodoxy in which an individual shouts the ideological jargon all the louder in order to demonstrate his conformity, hide his own dilemma and his despair, and protect himself from the fear and guilt he would feel should he attempt to use words and phrases other than the correct ones. Or else he may adapt a complex pattern of inner division, and dutifully produce the expected cliché's in public performances while in his private moments he searches for more meaningful avenues of expression. Either way, his imagination becomes increasingly dissociated from his actual life experiences and may tend to atrophy from disuse.
7. Doctrine Over Person
This sterile language reflects characteristic feature of ideological totalism: the subordination of human experience to the claims of doctrine. This primacy of doctrine over person is evident in the continual shift between experience itself and the highly abstract interpretation of such experience - between genuine feelings and spurious cataloguing of feelings. It has much to do with the peculiar aura of half-reality which totalist environment seems, at least to the outsider, to possess.
The inspiriting force of such myths cannot be denied; nor can one ignore their capacity for mischief. For when the myth becomes fused with the totalist sacred science, the resulting "logic" can be so compelling and coercive that it simply replaces the realities of individual experience. Consequently, past historical events are retrospectively altered, wholly rewritten, or ignored, to make them consistent with the doctrinal logic. This alteration becomes especially malignant when its distortions are imposed upon individual memory as occurred in the false confession extracted during thought reform.
The same doctrinal primacy prevails in the totalist approach to changing people: the demand that character and identity be reshaped, not in accordance with one's special nature or potentialities, but rather to fit the rigid contours of the doctrinal mold. The human is thus subjected to the ahuman. And in this manner, the totalists, as Camus phrases it, "put an abstract idea above human life, even if they call it history, to which they themselves have submitted in advance and to which they will decide arbitrarily, to submit everyone else as well."
The underlying assumption is that the doctrine - including its mythological elements - is ultimately more valid, true, and real than is any aspect of actual human character or human experience. Thus, even when circumstances require that a totalist movement follow a course of action in conflict with or outside of the doctrine, there exists what Benjamin Schwartz described as a "will to orthodoxy" which requires an elaborate facade of new rationalizations designed to demonstrate the unerring consistency of the doctrine and the unfailing foresight which it provides. But its greater importance lies in more hidden manifestations, particularly the totalists' pattern of imposing their doctrine-dominated remolding upon people in order to seek confirmation of (and again, dispel their own doubts about) this same doctrine. Rather than modify the myth in accordance with experience, the will to orthodoxy requires instead that men be modified in order to reaffirm the myth.
The individual person who finds himself under such doctrine-dominated pressure to change is thrust into an intense struggle with his own sense of integrity, a struggle which takes place in relation to polarized feelings of sincerity and insincerity. In a totalist environment, absolute "sincerity" is demanded; and the major criterion for sincerity is likely to be one's degree of doctrinal compliance - both in regard to belief and to direction of personal change. Yet there is always the possibility of retaining an alternative version of sincerity (and of reality), the capacity to imagine a different kind of existence and another form of sincere commitment. These alternative visions depend upon such things as the strength of previous identity, the penetration of the milieu by outside ideas, and the retained capacity for eventual individual renewal. The totalist environment, however, counters such "deviant" tendencies with the accusation that they stem entirely from personal "problems" ("thought problems" or "ideological problems") derived from untoward earlier influences. The outcome will depend largely upon how much genuine relevance the doctrine has for the individual emotional predicament. And even for those to whom it seems totally appealing, the exuberant sense of well-being it temporarily affords may be more a "delusion of wholeness" than an expression of true and lasting inner harmony.
8. The Dispensing of Existence
The totalist environment draws a sharp line between those whose right to existence can be recognized, and those who possess no such right.
Are not men presumtuous to appoint themselves the dispensers of human existence? Surely this is a flagrant expression of what the Greeks called hubris, of arrogant man making himself God. Yet one underlying assumption makes this arrogance mandatory: the conviction that there is just one path to true existence, just one valid mode of being, and that all others are perforce invalid and false. Totalists thus feel themselves compelled to destroy all possibilities of false existence as a means of furthering the great plan of true existence to which they are committed.
For the individual, the polar emotional conflict is the ultimate existential one of "being versus nothingness." He is likely to be drawn to a conversion experience, which he sees as the only means of attaining a path of existence for the future. The totalist environment - even when it does not resort to physical abuse - thus stimulates in everyone a fear of extinction or annihilation. A person can overcome this fear and find (in martin Buber's term) "confirmation," not in his individual relationships, but only from the fount of all existence, the totalist Organization. Existence comes to depend upon creed (I believe, therefore I am), upon submission (I obey, therefore I am) and beyond these, upon a sense of total merger with the ideological movement. Ultimately of course one compromises and combines the totalist "confirmation" with independent elements of personal identity; but one is ever made aware that, should he stray too far along this "erroneous path," his right to existence may be withdrawn.

(READMORE BROKE SO I HAD TO DO IT LIKE THIS SORRY FGBHKFD)
aaaa, thank you so much for reading about all of it! and i’d be glad to talk more about those, they’re actually specific topics i wanted to cover at some point!
Legendary Paragons: Those in History
Although, for some reason or another, they’ve often been omitted, certain figures in both history and legend alike were likely to have been Paragons who were bonded with legendary Pokemon.
Two of the most likely are the Heroes of Truth and Ideals from Unovan legend. Some who know of the existence of Paragons believe that the two heroes quickly bonded with their respective dragons, and even that their bond with them as Paragons was what gifted them those titles in the first place. What happened to that bond once the two dragons became the Light and Dark Stones is a mystery.
It’s also believed that, before the Brass Tower burned down and Ho-oh and Lugia left Ecruteak City, they would choose certain people to become their bonded Paragon, to serve as a guardian of the city, and a priest meant to connect humans to the gods. This tradition, obviously, ended after the fateful fire so many years ago, and while the priests of Ho-oh and Lugia are something mildly known by the elder folk in the city, any mentions of Paragons is, for some reason, omitted.
A more lighthearted theory is the idea that Magearna and the princess it was made for grew so close, that one day, when an enraged Pokemon threatened to harm them, they managed to make a pact and become a bonded duo within mere seconds. Those who believe this story tend to end it in one of two ways. One is that the two simply kept it a secret, fearing the reactions of others. The other is that, as time went on, they did reveal their new power to their people, and used it to protect the kingdom.
Eeveeloution Paragons + The “Adapter” Speciality
Even among a system of incredibly unique beings, there’s some that take it up a level. Eeveeloution Paragons, when around others of their line, are able to combine their power in various ways.
An Espeon Paragon & an Umbreon Paragon, for example, can use how their attacks effect each other to their advantage, allowing one attack to cloak the other. A Flareon Paragon and a Glaceon Paragon can combined their attacks to artificially replicate a Water-type move. A Jolteon Paragon can use their moves on the attacks of a Vaporeon Paragon, to allow both to strike the enemy at once.
There’s also the matter of traits of a person’s Paragon form blending into their normal form. Obviously, Flareon Paragons will be warm to the touch, and Glaceon Paragons will be cold, but there’s also the possibility that an Umbreon Paragon’s eyes will glow in the dark, similar to the Pokemon’s rings, or that a Sylveon Paragon will be able to easily help soothe someone with a simple touch.
…then there’s Eevee itself. By default, it would be of the Defender Speciality, then shift into a whole other role when evolving. But there’s those few Eevees who, for one reason or another, refuse to evolve. They’re perfectly fine as is, and, thankfully, more times than not, their trainers will accept that.
Should they become a Paragon then…
The “Adapter” speciality is something unique to Eevee, and even then, only those Eevee who are perfectly content as who they are, and their trainers who accept that, will be eligible for the title. Their Soul Shard is shaped similarly to the Pokemon’s tail, and though it has the color of a regular Normal-Type shard, when reflected in the light, it shines with all the colors of the rainbow.
This is a hint to what this speciality is able to do: those with the Adapter speciality are able to draw upon the power of their surroundings, and moves used near them. When this happens, the Paragon and the Eevee will both temporarily become dual-typed, and gain the power of one of Eevee’s many evolutions. Their appearances shift to reflect this.
For example, should they draw upon the power of the forest, or of a Grass-type attack, they will take on Grass as a secondary typing, and have some features change to resemble those of Leafeon. Should they draw upon the power of the emotions of beings, or of a Fairy-type attack, they will take on Fairy as a secondary typing, and have some features taken from Sylveon.
Of course, since the requirements for becoming an Adapter are so strict, it’s rare to find a duo like this at all. But they definitely exist, and the power they hold is great, indeed.

Post War Dreams (September 04, 2019) POST-WAR DREAMS is a 2.5D Story-Rich, Side Scrolling Action Game, set in the wasteland of USA, plagued with constant war. Following the collapse of the economy, government, and society, you must brave heavily armed militia, lawless gangs, dangerous streets, desolate buildings and underground bunkers on your quest to escape this post-apocalyptic wasteland alive. The road to a new life is paved with danger, hope and constant reminders of everything that’s been lost. You will engage in combating the gangs and militia in order to survive and may choose to help other survivors who are full of their own personal misery, hopes and dreams, where everyone is trying to see the next sunrise in this chaotic wasteland. SUMMARY The United States has broken, and violence fills the streets. Freedom and patriotism have disintegrated, replaced with war and famine, and life is only a reminder of what’s been lost. If Garrett Mitchell hopes to survive this new world, he’ll have to fight his way through dangerous militia soldiers and members of the ruthless gang The Remnants while deciding whether or not to help his fellow survivors. Following years of mounting tensions within the United States, civil unrest caused Washington DC to shut its doors and borders to the rest of the world six short months ago. As lawlessness took over the Midwest, spreading from coast-to-coast, the financial system crashed and soon DC and the surrounding cities became a fortress for the privileged with the rest of the country left to fend for itself. Now, the streets run red with the blood of innocents as militia, gangs and rogue soldiers use lethal means to secure food, water and supplies that will allow their societies to keep going. For those civilians caught in the middle, each day is a fight for survival. As supplies dry up, these neutrals flee from the cities in hopes of starting over somewhere new. Holding onto a shred of hope, all the civilians have left are the clothes on their back and their post-war dreams. Players are introduced to Garrett, their mysterious vehicle through the wastelands of the United States. In the months since society’s collapse Garrett has done all he can to survive, dodging soldiers, gangs and other civilians, but with food, water and other survival resources scarce, he must find his way out of the city if he wants to live another day. Just as Garrett believes he can exit the city scot-free he’s waylaid by enemies and rescued by Kara, a former EMT (emergency medical technician), who is trying to lead her own group outside the city limits to probable safety. Her group is made up friends, neighbors, co-workers as well as strangers she’s encountered along the way. While Kara has medical training and cunning, which have allowed she and her group to survive the weeks since the war began, they lack combat skills and Garrett is a logical choice to help ensure everyone’s survival. The player may choose to help Kara and her friends or go it alone, with the impacts of the decision coming into view as the first few levels progress. Whatever the course, the player will ultimately end up a part of Kara’s caravan whether reluctantly or by choice. While Garrett’s fellow travelers will be excited to learn more about their new compatriot, the player may choose to not be as friendly or forthcoming. As the levels continue on and Garrett is exposed to different backstories, his successes or failures may also lead to the deaths of those he finds himself growing closer to. DAILY ASTROLOGY REPORTS AND HOROSCOPES FOR, 8-31-17
Astrology Cafe Daily Astrology ABOUT TODAY DAILY MONTHLY CHART You are here: Home / Daily Astrology / Astrology of Today – Thursday, August 31, 2017 Astrology of Today – Thursday, August 31, 2017 Aug 30, 2017 by Annie Leave a Comment The Moon is in Sagittarius until 4:18 AM, after which the Moon is in Capricorn. The Moon is void from 12:42 AM to 4:18 AM. The Moon is waxing and in its First Quarter phase. The First Quarter Moon occurred on the 29th, and a Full Moon will occur on September 6th. Mercury is retrograde (Mercury is retrograde from August 12-September 5). Mercury re-enters Leo. Times are EDT. Horoscopes Aries Aries Mercury is still retrograde (since August 12th), and today slips back into your sector of romance, creativity, and children, dear Aries. Mercury continues here in retrograde motion until the 5th and then continues in direct motion until the 9th. In the coming week, there can be delays or challenges related to the affairs of this sector, and you may need to redo or revisit past problems. If you’re traveling back over the same ground, be sure to do it differently this time around! Something can be left up in the air, or people from your past may re-emerge. The creative process might feel as if it’s moving backward, when in fact it’s more of a realignment process that you’re experiencing. You are thinking and expressing yourself in different ways. This is a good time to rethink recent decisions and choices. Today, you may be experiencing some reservations about a person, project, or situation – perhaps even a purchase. If you feel the urge to prove yourself, ask yourself if it’s something you truly need to do. While the Moon’s move into your reputation sector this morning serves to temporarily magnify the importance of duties and performance in your life, you’re also in a good position to get some serious work done! Taurus Taurus Mercury, still retrograde, slips back into your sector of home and family today, dear Taurus, and this can cast a veil over matters surrounding your domestic or personal life until September 5th when Mercury turns direct. Problems around the home can require your attention, or old dilemmas can resurface. After the 5th, matters unblock and clear up, the information you’ve been waiting for arrives, and thinking about personal and domestic matters clarify. Also today, Venus forms a tense aspect with Saturn, and since Venus is your ruler, you could be feeling excluded or misunderstood. While this is likely to be a rather vague feeling, it can weigh on you if you allow it to. People can be a little detached or withholding, and you may be holding back as well. Do your best to work on problem areas, or to take a step back so that you can look at a relationship or concern objectively. Chances are, the problems can be fixed with a little patience. This is a beautiful time to consider and examine what it is that you truly value. Gemini Gemini Retrograde Mercury slips back into your sector of communication today, dear Gemini, after spending the first leg of its retrograde journey in your home and family sector. Mercury will be retrograde for only a week longer, not even, but you’ll likely need to deal with some delays related to schooling, transportation, and communications that cause a few problems or confusion. Be vigilant about marking important dates and appointments on your calendar. You may be looking back at old projects and finding interesting information that helps you in the present. Today, with Venus and Saturn in a minor challenging aspect, you may be seeing a situation in a weak or negative light. Be aware that this aspect can pull up fears or inhibitions to the surface and if others are a little cool or critical with you, it’s likely about self-protectiveness. It’s a good time to take a look at your life with a bit more objectivity. Aim to get in better touch with your needs and desires. Cancer Cancer Mercury has been retrograde since August 12th and has been influencing your communications sector, dear Cancer. Today, Mercury moves back into your sector of assets, money, and resources for a short while. This is a time for a review of your finances or budget, and perhaps something lost or misplaced. You may need to rethink recent decisions and choices or wait for final word on a matter. Mercury retrograde periods often have us feeling in limbo, and at this time for you, this could be about money or possessions (material things). Mercury continues its retrograde until September 5th, and then finishes up its transit of this sector of your chart on the 9th. A new perspective on a matter can turn your attention to something you overlooked in the past. Today can be a little tricky on social levels. A disconnect with someone can lead to misunderstandings. You may see things for their flaws more than their benefits today, but this can serve a useful purpose if you use it to fix problems rather than dwell on what’s not working out in your life. With a little patience, you’ll see things more clearly and reasonably. Leo Leo Retrograde Mercury slips back into your sign today, dear Leo. Mercury turned retrograde on August 12th in the sign of Virgo and is now retreating into your sign. Until September 5th, Mercury remains retrograde in your sign and then finishes its transit of Leo by September 9th. This can be a time for moving back to an old conversation, project, look, or decision and revisiting it. Someone who has been gone or distant can reappear in your life. Communication problems could plague you in little, annoying ways in the coming week. Some personal plans may stall or encounter setbacks, delays, or require reassessment. Take extra time coming to decisions and making commitments for the time being. If it takes you a little longer to come to decisions, so be it! There could be stinginess with feelings or a withholding atmosphere later today, but it has roots in fear and the misdirected desire to feel more in control of our lives. You could feel restricted now, but problems and flaws are magnified in your mind today, and things will look better later. Creatively speaking, your confidence may be lacking. You’ll find the most satisfaction in your work and routines now. Virgo Virgo Mercury, moving in retrograde motion, leaves your sign today, dear Virgo, and slips back into the sign of Leo, where it will stay until September 9th, although it will remain retrograde only until September 5th. This turns your thought processes inward, even more so. Some of the decisions made and projects started in the last month can come up for review now. You can be even more mysterious and easily misunderstood! However, you will be out of the spotlight now, and this helps take some pressure off. Decision-making can be difficult in the coming week as you play with different possibilities. Your mind can frequently turn back to the same problem that’s hard to resolve. Also today, when it comes to relationships and social interactions, there can be some disconnects. Calmness and a little detachment will help manage this. Relationships feel slow, and creativity can feel blocked. Use this time to reflect on your needs and the needs of those closest to you, rather than trying to push things forward. Obstacles are sometimes necessary, not only because they can give us pause to think, but also because they help us to see the value of things, and even people! Libra Libra Mercury, moving in retrograde motion, slips back into your solar eleventh house today, dear Libra, where Mercury will transit until September 9th (in retrograde motion until September 5th). Some of the seeds you recently planted related to friends or long-term goals are likely to need review or revision. Friendships can be a little trickier to handle now, although they’ll pick up speed after the 5th. Watch for missing information or fuzzy thinking. Returning to past issues with a friend is very possible you’ll need to approach things differently to get different, satisfying results! Today holds some iffy energy related to family and friends. Disconnects in your relationships are possible now as someone is holding back perhaps due to fear of rejection. This is not the best time to lay your heart on the line. If you don’t feel ready to make a decision, you’re probably right to sit on the fence for a while longer. Scorpio Scorpio Retrograde Mercury moves back into your solar tenth house today, dear Scorpio. Mercury will transit here until September 9th, but will be retrograde only until the 5th. This period may bring some confusion to business plans. It’s a good time for review, but not the best period for clear-cut answers and obvious, spelled-out-for-you direction. Reconsider things, but wait it out before making final decisions, if possible. If you’re going over the same old ground, be sure to do so a little differently so that you get better results. Watch that you don’t misrepresent yourself with what you say (or don’t say). Keep in mind that today you are seeing situations and people from a place of fear or worry, which can distort your perceptions. Knowing why you’re doing this can help you keep your perspective. You may feel the need to guard against people who aim to take credit for your ideas or work. Things will look much rosier tomorrow as you let go of inhibitions a little. Sagittarius Sagittarius Mercury, still retrograde, slips back into your solar ninth house today, dear Sagittarius, and backtracking continues but now in different ways. You may need to review travel or educational plans, or there can be some mix-ups that introduce delays into your life. After Mercury ends its retrograde cycle on September 5th, these things will gradually clear up and straighten out. For now, taking a look back at recent decisions and choices may be particularly useful. New information will emerge later. Check your facts before expressing your opinions too forcefully, as information you receive may not be complete before the 5th. Today, interpersonal communication problems are likely, so be sure that you are very clear, leaving very little up to the imagination. However, it’s also wise to consider that fears or rejection are strongly at work just under the surface of things right now, so others’ emotionally distant behavior may not be a cause for serious concern. There could be pangs of separation or discontent. Try not to stress over actions (or inaction) by those close to you. Recognize that your emotional needs for support are stronger than usual, and not everyone is in sync with this energy. Capricorn Capricorn Mercury is still retrograde – a cycle that began August 12th – but today slips back into the sign of Leo and your solar eighth house, dear Capricorn. You may need to review recently made financial commitments and shared resources, or intimate relationships. Power dynamics can change quite dramatically in a partnership. Try to use a different approach and look at old problems from a new angle or perspective. If they’re re-emerging, then they need to be put to rest another way. Focus less on the details or facts and more on the bigger picture or what it all means for best results when Mercury is retrograde, which it is until September 5th. Also today, there can be delays or withholding, but try to keep your head up. After all, they’re likely to lead to greater appreciation for what you have or to what ends up materializing for you down the road. You may have to forgo a pleasurable activity to fill your duties. This orientation can be useful as you may very well need to pay particular attention to practical matters. Aquarius Aquarius Mercury, still retrograde, slips back into your partnership sector today, dear Aquarius. Mercury has been retrograde since August 12th and will continue this apparent backward motion until September 5th. During this period, you may be returning to old problems or situations surrounding partnership matters, either personal or business. It’s not the time to fence someone (or yourself) in. Give people space and hope that they return the favor. Communications can be muddled up for the time being, but delays can also help you to understand your needs and values more completely. There can be a tendency to see flaws and inadequacies under a magnifying glass today, especially our own! It may be that you need to slow down to get a better or more realistic view of your life. Reflect, be objective about your relationships, and get in better touch with what it is you truly want and value. Also be a little cautious with money until you see things more clearly. Pisces Pisces Mercury is still retrograde (since August 12th), dear Pisces, and while Mercury’s been moving through your partnership zone, it today slips back into your work and health sector. This takes some of the scrutiny away from a partnership but could stimulate misunderstandings or the need to backtrack in your job. There may be some delays or returning to old problems related to your health, work, and daily routines. It can be difficult to see all of the facts before you so that schedules can quickly get out of whack, or projects you began in the last month need revision. There may be the need to review, redo, or double check your work. Today, there can be some negative thinking, withdrawal, or emotional distance in your interactions. This is likely not a symptom of a bigger problem but rather a day when we’re more self-protective and cautious with our feelings than usual. Fortunately, you can plug away at your work or the things you need to do, and you can feel good about a job well done. * Remember to read horoscopes for your Ascendant sign and Sun sign. Strong Signs, Elements, Modes BALANCE OF SIGNS LEO STRONG Self-confident, generous, warm-hearted, powerful leader, dramatic. Can be overly proud, vain, extravagant, arrogant. VIRGO STRONG Meticulous, discriminating, pure, practical, health conscious, hard working. Can be hyper-critical, petty and perfectionistic. CAPRICORN STRONG Disciplined, responsible, reliable, industrious, conscientious, practical, achieving. Can be pessimistic, overly conventional, rigid, materialistic, callous. BALANCE OF ELEMENTS FIRE STRONG Fire is enthusiastic, dynamic, and spontaneous, but lacks reflection. We are more courageous and adventurous now, with a tendency to act before thinking. There is little concern about what happened in the past. We are competitive and possibly impatient or bored easily. EARTH STRONG We are especially in touch with the physical world. We consider what we’ve learned and experienced in the past in order to make the most of the present. We can be cautious, practical, and possibly unimaginative. We are deliberate and can pace ourselves well. We need hands-on experience and are not impressed with theory as much as we are with results. Routines are tolerable and comforting. AIR WEAK We may have a difficult time being objective or detached. We may not be especially communicative. WATER WEAK There may be some insensitivity or lack of empathy now. We may be out of touch with what we’re feeling or with our emotional needs. We may be tougher than usual now, and more inclined to follow mental or practical considerations than we are to listen to our intuition. BALANCE OF MODES The modes are balanced. LUNAR PHASE: FIRST QUARTER Moon from 90 to 135 degrees ahead of the Sun. We are motivated to take action, perhaps due to a clash, conflict, or stress, as we are more aware of problems and differences now. Plans are beginning to take off or turn a corner. We should watch for pushing too hard. The following aspects (major only) and positions are at noon (EDT) on August 31st: Note that when an aspect is applying, it has not yet happened but is within orb – it’s pending. When an aspect is separating, it has already happened/perfected and is moving away from the aspect. Depending on the speed of the planet/body involved, the aspect will have perfected–or will perfect–in a matter of hours (often the case with the Moon), days, months, and possibly years in the case of the very slow-moving outer planets and bodies. Note that the Moon moves at a rate of approximately one degree every 2 hours, so that if an aspect involving the Moon is applying and has an orb of 5 degrees, the aspect will perfect (be exact) in about 10 hours. If the Moon is separating from an aspect with an orb of 2 degrees, it has already formed said aspect approximately 4 hours ago (since the following are positions at noon today, then it would have occurred at about 8 AM today). **I suggest paying close attention to applying aspects. The energy of the aspect builds as it gets closer to exact. Once an aspect involving inner planets has happened, it’s over. Separating aspects are good to know for context, but in terms of energy that is with us today, applying aspects are most important. (This is the case for daily astrology influences involving inner planets, which pass quickly, and not natal astrology aspects, which are with us for a lifetime). THE MOON THE MOON IN CAPRICORN You feel secure when life is structured, or you are working hard. You may be emotionally distant or cold. You mother’s love may be limited in some way. OPPOSITION URANUS Orb 6°16′ Applying You are keen to change things in this world as you see no reason to continue with the old traditions. You speak out against injustice, but may lack the patience and persistence to see through the changes. SQUARE PLUTO Orb 4°53′ Separating You will need to learn to have confidence in yourself even when life deals you a few blows. You range from over confident to completely lacking in confidence. The truth lies somewhere in between. SATURN SATURN IN SAGITTARIUS Saturn in Sagittarius asks us to take on the responsibility of living according to our personal truths and principles — and to be loyal to these. This is a time for turning a critical eye to those beliefs and principles that don’t accurately reflect our authentic selves. pansy : does your muse often reflect on their own actions ? do they ever think a lot about the past , and what they could have done differently ?
Not if he can avoid it, which is most of the time. It would only make him feel bad, right?
There are things he still feels guilty about (despite all efforts to ignore them), but he's not good at actually taking responsibility for his actions, and he isn't particularly convinced that it's possible for him to be better.
peony : what would a ‘ happy life ’ look like in your muse’s eyes ?
He'd settle for anything without the dread of his weird familial obligations and curses hovering over his head, tbh.
A lot of his old recurring daydreams focused on running off to become a goatherd in some isolated corner of the world. He has a vague, idealised notion of something reasonably steady and safe and cottagecore, but is also aware he'd likely have some issues with that in practice. (This may also be taken as evidence he's not built to be happy anyhow.) Literally joining the circus also may have been a thing for a while.
He hardly dares hope for a significant other most of the time.
poppy : what comforts your muse ?
Fun fact: before he starts wearing other things (which is big deal), the hooded black robe was something like a security blanket that he could feasibly carry around with him 24/7. Not only does it prevent people from perceiving his wretched countenance, it's surprisingly soft, gives him some protection against the cold on an everyday basis (if not against overheating), cuts out what seems like entirely too much glare in his peripheral vision, and will never fail him in a way that can't be fixed with enough sewing.
So, as for small things: being swathed in fabric, animals he doesn't hate, wine, maybe black tea, probably cards and pens and whatever else he plays with, the comforting sentiment that you were doomed to failure from the start and that there's no point in getting up in arms about it,
But also, let's be honest, how many times has he felt unhappy about something and then immediately concocted some ill-advised, unnecessarily risky summoning expedition or the like to avoid or 'fix' it???
parsley : describe a holiday your muse enjoys , and why they enjoy it .
I've answered a slightly adjacent question here (/gotten entirely carried away) and made some notes on all his notable holidays (or those I have a take on atm), since I've never bothered do that. There are a lot of days that are simply incidents for minor sacrifice or particularly good days on which to do X or Y, and he theoretically has religious obligations on a lot of days which aren't actually that celebratory at all. Really, one wonders how he keeps track of everything.
(All based on very surface-level research. I also really need to do more with the Kemetic influence at some point (curse his silly chimera religion), but information on that's generally scarcer and I'm tired.)
Parentalia (February 13-21): Offerings to and/or calling upon the spirits of departed ancestors, culminating in the Feralia sacrifice at midnight. Traditionally all business is put on hold for the duraction - his family's perspective probably differs somewhat in that you might want to use those spirits for something, rather than exorcising them.
Valentine's Day: Kal obviously always brings up his distaste for saints, but mostly he's just following the tradition of feeling bitter and unloved. Unless he isn't single...?
Caristia (February 22): Celebration of living family. You're supposed to bring everyone together and put all disagreements aside, which obviously always works perfectly and creates no tension whatsoever. Exchanging of wine and gifts and such. Kal probably begrudgingly makes the pilgrimage at least some of the time in adulthood.
Terminalia (February 23): Time to renew the curses on the boundaries of your property. Also to move them if you want to slowly encroach on the lands on the peasants. Or if you decided that was a bad idea and need to put them back.
March 1: 'New year', maybe.
Liberalia (March 17): "Celebrates the maturation of young boys to manhood," usually at 15-16. Also time to replace the mysterious effigy you have hanging in the woods and possibly the 2-3 robes you wear constantly.
April 1: He's not going to turn down an opportunity to fuck with anyone, right?
Kal's own birthday (April 14): I get the impression he mostly recalls waking up pre-pre-dawn for ritual reasons, and a lot of scrutiny of how well his schooling was progressing. He generally doesn't bother telling people about it.
Easter: sometimes he burns bibles for the occasion
Parilia (April 21): Sanctification and appeasement of the goats. Honestly kind of a big deal.
Vinalia urbana (April 23): Has mostly devolved into an excuse to drink.
Lemuria (May 9, 11, 13): Another festival of the restless dead. Has perhaps been kind-of-merged with The Beautiful Festival of the Valley. Which involves flower garlands.
Opet (July 19): For him, one occasion on which he’s obliged to venerate Amun-Ra and beg Him to maintain His contracts, I expect.
Neptunalia (July 23): Involves hanging out in the woods building huts of sticks (in the sun / rain), praying the fish will continue to be somewhat edible, and theoretically merrymaking.
Tekh (August 7): See Vinalia urbana, except it has to be beer, which he's less fond of.
Portunalia (August 17): "On this day, keys were thrown into a fire for good luck in a very solemn and lugubrious manner."
do they have to be your keys
Vulcanalia (August 23): If you want, you can ritually not sacrifice small animals by dangling them over open flames for a while and then taking them back unscathed. This is supposed to make your incendiary spells more effective in combat.
Meditrinalia (October 11): See Vinalia urbana.
Anniversary of Exile (October 23): Generally a time for swearing fealty to the legacy of your Ancestors and solemn oaths to One Day Conquer The World Once Again or whatever. Occasion of a ritual theoretically supposed to increase your own Dark Power, on which a fair number of Kal's intermediary relatives took it upon themselves to sacrifice their enemies. He probably abandons it at some point but is likely to be conflicted and in a less-than-stellar mood.
There are likely also minor acknowledgements of other historical dates of import to his cult family.
Birthday of Kallistemon Zorabi (January 29): Quite similar to the above, with a slightly more optimistic bent.
Halloween: I'm going to say this is agreed upon as a good time for necromancy, which means he's likely to busy himself with some nonsense as an excuse to spurn the holiday itself. For quite a while he denigrates it as a Mockery of "actual traditions", but I suspect he could learn to enjoy it if he bothered.
Saturnalia (December 17): Known as the season where slaves were traditionally served by or before their masters. Associated with the freedom to insult your betters, gambling, and the giving of (often small or gag) gifts. Kal is on board for all of this and will fairly often give people the worst things he can manage for 'Christmas'. (This is also a good way of thumbing his nose at Christmas.)
Bacchanalia (thrice yearly): About what you'd expect from Dionysos. He may have participated at school/university, and it's a good time if you like being driven temporarily insane (who doesn't), but you can't really do it properly if there's not a cult around. That's just sad.
Agonalia (quarterly): Occasion of sacrifice to various entities. True to the name, generally just kind of stressful, as you had to either kill something or (if you really couldn't afford to) offer apologetic blood sacrifice.

Title Panzer Paladin Developer Tribute Games Publisher Tribute Games Release Date July 21st, 2020 Genre Retro platformer Platform PC, Nintendo Switch Age Rating E for Everyone 10+ – Fantasy Violence Official Website
I’ve been a fan of Tribute Games for years, but this is the first time I’ve directly received a review copy from them. And though a fan, I feel many of their games in the past have been great, but not amazing. Most were held back by balance issues, such as Mercenary Kings Reloaded or even Flinthook. But turns out it was just a matter of time, cause after playing Panzer Paladin, I’ve come to a revelation. This is the best game Tribute has ever made. Not only that, but it’s my favorite new retro title since Shovel Knight. You’re probably curious why I feel that way, so I implore you to keep reading.

The first thing that’s great about Panzer Paladin is the plot. It’s very 80s, in the best way. The game starts with magical weapons falling to earth, opening portals for fell armies and turning humans into foul beasts. Several portals have opened up, summoning a horde of eldritch foes ready to lay waste. The only answer to this magical mayhem? Robots, of course! They can’t be corrupted by the magical energy, and thus can wield magical weapons safely. The robots in question comprise the titular Panzer and Paladin. These are Grit, a gigantic mech, and Flame, a human sized android made for rescue operations. That said, don’t count Flame out! Even though she’s nowhere near as tough as Grit, she can wield a mean laser whip, reach tunnels inaccessible to Grit, grapple across pits and even heal the giant mech remotely. Meanwhile, Grit will be what you use for the bulk of combat. He can attack upwards to reach vertical heights, bounce on foe’s heads like Uncle Scrooge, dash backwards, block enemy projectiles with a shield and can withstand a ton of hurt before he crumbles.

I really was drawn in by the pulpy fun of the premise, and it’s only made better by beautiful anime cutscenes. They look like they could have been drawn by greats of the genre, and they lend a ton of personality to the cast. Even though you’re only controlling Grit and Flame, you have a supporting team of goofballs, mostly lending moral support. You also have a sinister foe in Ravenous. He’s the one behind all the chaos happening on the planet, and he openly mocks your efforts to stop him. There’s also the mysterious Horseman, who seems to have goals all his own, despite obviously being a magical creature himself.

With the stage set, I should talk about the game itself. It’s clear the folks at Tribute outdid themselves here, finding inspiration in a number of classic series. There’s a level select and final stage gauntlet similar to Mega Man; The Horseman’s musical theme reminds me of Proto Man; there’s a mech and pilot dynamic not unlike Blaster Master; Grit wields a shield that works similarly to Zelda II; and though there’s not Castlevania wall meat, you can often find hidden weapons by busting open walls. That said, this very much feels like a unique experience. These small touches are meant to flavor the larger experience, but it’s one wholly distinct from any of those games. One mechanic that brings that to bear is how weapons work.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Each of the weapons you’ll discover are one of three types – Cut (sword), Pierce (spear) or Impact (Hammer). There’s no weapon triangle to worry about, but you will need particular types of weapons to break open corresponding blocks. Also, since all these weapons are magical, they increase your burden. I admit I’m not entirely sure how this works, other than having a high burden seeming to guarantee encounters with recurring mini boss The Horseman. You’ll find weapons in levels, and defeating foes also results in weapon drops. Though the weapon type isn’t that important, other than their attack range, their spell type is vital. Every weapon has a spell inside it, and you can unleash it by breaking them. You do so by holding ZL and ZR until the meter fills, and there’s a ton of spells. Some will heal you, others temporarily increase your stats, some literally give you wings and others hurl lightning at foes. That’s far from all of them, but you can see there’s a good variety. There’s a definite risk and reward with the weapons. Do you keep wielding a weapon until its durability runs out, allowing it to shatter? Or do you break it early to cast a spell? Sometimes you’ll need to throw the weapon at a distant foe, losing it in the process but dealing a ton of damage. The nuance is fantastic, and it really lets the player tailor the experience to their preference. On that note, there’s also different difficulty settings, so the game is only as hard as you want it to be. That said, even on Normal difficulty Panzer Paladin is a hearty challenge.

The cool thing about how weapons work is they effectively let the game play like a Metroidvania without actually being one. Though you can explore and find hidden nooks and crannies, these just have hidden 1UPs. Your only permanent upgrades come from trading in excess weapons at the lab to increase Grit’s health bar. Other than that, you have to manage your arsenal wisely. Keep in mind, the best weapons come from the many colorful bosses in the game. These are found in distinct regions across the world, and all represent iconic mythological monsters. In Egypt there’s Anubis, the USA is seduced by Lilith, Japan is menaced by Gashadokuro, Greece strangled by Medusa and Russia bewitched by Baba Yaga. There’s plenty more, and they all serve as great challenges with amazing design. They have unique attack patterns along with tells, and they force you to react accordingly. Some fights even force you to play as Flame briefly, such as when Anubis casts you out of Grit. Flame has helped save my ass more than once after Grit perished, letting me win hard fights. None of the bosses is easy, but with one exception, they’re all fair. That exception is the first boss in the final gauntlet of the game, and it almost made me give up. Thankfully I found a combination of spells to deal with it, and the rest of the final bosses were more balanced, much to my relief.

I really liked the way the game played, and found the loop of going through levels, acquiring weapons, beating the bosses, upgrading, rinse and repeat to be fluid. You’re free to tackle the stages in any order you choose, though some are definitely harder than others, and some bosses will give you a steeper challenge. The platforming isn’t quite as great as the combat, though not cause it’s poorly implemented. It’s more that Tribute’s tendency for difficulty rears its head more often in these sections. Not really for the platforming while in Grit, but when I had to control Flame solo. Flame has a fraction of the health that Grit does, and spikes he can shrug off instantly kill her. Additionally, the grapple and swing mechanic takes a bit of getting used to. I thought I couldn’t get past a pit in Mexico, and died repeatedly before I got the timing down. Thankfully, the sections where you only control Flame are pretty brief, and generally come right before a checkpoint. The interesting thing about checkpoints is they continue the risk vs reward by forcing you to spend a weapon to activate a checkpoint. Grit grabs it and slams it downwards in what I refer to as a Reverse Excalibur. You’re free to pull the sword back out of the stone, so to speak, but if you do so and perish, you’ll start over from the beginning of the stage. Overall the gameplay is fantastic, and the combat is tremendous. It just can be a bit anxiety inducing during some platforming.

Panzer Paladin has a surprising amount of replay value. First you play through the game on Classic, and then you unlock Remixed mode, as well as Speedrun and Tournament. Remixed seems mostly the same, other than enemies being more durable, traps being more dangerous and the layout of stages tweaked slightly. The boss fights all felt the same, other than one new boss fight early on. To be fair, I haven’t beaten the game on Remixed yet, so it’s very possible there’s other late game differences. Speedrun lets you challenge stages with set weapons and beat them to try and reach par times. Tournament is fun, other than when I hit the roadblock of the boss I complained about earlier. I think you’re supposed to beat it by using the game’s Parry mechanic, where attacking after blocking an enemy attack temporarily stuns them. Unfortunately I never mastered that technique, so thus far I have been unable to beat Tournament. Also, I encountered a glitch where a boss literally disappeared as I battled through that mode, forcing me to restart. These bonus modes are still fun, but my favorite is a mode I haven’t mentioned yet – Blacksmith mode.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Blacksmith mode is outstanding. It’s super intuitive, and lets you design your own weapons. You are limited to a color palette of 4 colors, but there’s a lot you can accomplish with that. First I made a boring hatchet, but later went nuts and made a lollypop spear and banana blade. Once you design your weapon, you use points to allocate towards various attributes, such as durability, attack speed and more. Then, after you have saved your design, it will actually show up in the game! After you battle The Horseman, he always gives you a random weapon. If you’ve designed some, he’ll instead drop one you have created. I believe this feature will take online into consideration, so hopefully after this review goes live, I’ll start finding weapons designed by other folks playing the game. Either way, I really like Blacksmith mode, and only wish I was able to save more weapon designs.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Tribute never disappoints with design, and Panzer Paladin is no exception. This is a game that’s both faithful to NES classics of the past while still showing off a ton of style. There’s great touches during the cut scenes, and though there’s a limited color palette in the stages, nothing is ugly. I especially love the boss designs, which all are equal parts menacing and delightful. One favorite is an angry ice boss I call Frosty the No Man, but they’re all wonderful. All the enemies are fun too, such as snickering goblins, demonic fire spewing plants, lumbering giants, bird men, mummies and so much more. There’s no lack of vision here, and it all blends together into a vast tapestry. The music doesn’t disappoint either, with punchy sound effects. Best of all, every stage has a unique musical theme. It all comes together seamlessly, and just serves to make Panzer Paladin an even more memorable game.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Overall, Panzer Paladin was actually better than I thought it might be. It wasn’t quite perfect, but it came really damned close. If they had done things like make Remixed a bit more different than Classic, or ironed out the glitches I experienced in Tournament mode, I would have given this a perfect score. It’s a tremendous value for only $19.99, with multiple endings, tons of different modes and an adventure I won’t soon forget. I spent about 10 hours beating the game the first time, but since then have spent several more hours just enjoying the game. I always knew Tribute was capable of greatness, and I’m so glad they achieved it in Panzer Paladin. Now I just hope they have a sequel in the works, cause I want to see more from this amazing world.
