A Turbulent Past

This is a collection of stories from Tara’s past. Specifically, some of them revolve around her interaction with or feelings about Varian, but many of them are before they met or during times they could not have interacted.

This is also a general timeline of Tara’s life as well as a massive WIP. I’ll repost as I add more.

Year -12,347

Shalandrala Winterscale is born.

Year -12,724

Though young, Shalandrala shows a particular affinity for arcane magic and garners the interest of Queen Azshara. Over the next few centuries, she became a student and eventually a minor council beneath the Queen.

Year -10,000

Shalandrala leads a group of rebels against Queen Azshara and gains the respect of those who followed her.

Year -9,351

Shalandrala Winterscale leads her followers north into the Tranquil Glades, migrating from the ruined city of Zin-Azshari and away from the corruption caused by Queen Azshara.

Year -7,300

Construction begins on the hidden halls of Cartouche following word of Malfurion’s exile of magic-wielding elves. A great font of power is hidden deep beneath the land above, birthed from a vial of water from the Well of Eternity.

Year -6,927

Mythsaerin Winterscale is born to Shalandrala, and his father leaves the encampment shortly after, never returning.

Years -6,800 to -50

The elves of Cartouche have developed a druidic society above the earth to live in harmony with their kaldorei kin. Below the Tranquil Glades, however, study and use of arcane magic, as well as many other schools, takes place. During these long years, small explorative parties travel the world to collect more knowledge for the thriving hidden society.

Year -49

The font of power in Cartouche begins to wain and solutions are being sought. By the end of the year, it is decided that baring a half-human child would give them the innate advantage which elves possess over the arcane without the necessity to utilize raw magic to use their abilities, allowing said child to take care of more mundane tasks to preserve their reserve of magic, or perhaps even restore the font itself.

Years -45 to 2

Many women of Cartouche set forth to conceive their half-bred children. Unfortunately, the rituals utilized to create the genetic balance have the unfortunate side effect of creating a weaker fetus. Miscarriages and stillbirths are common, and over the course of these years, there is a distinct malcontent that grows against the once-beloved leader.

Year 3

After so many failures and with discourse spreading through her people, Shalandrala takes it upon herself to find a suitable sire for her own child, intent to give her life in order to create a viable life.

(This particular event branches off into two possibilities. The first one involves her traveling to Dalaran and taking the company of a wizened, powerful mage. (in-game canon)

The second, and more complex line follows her a bit earlier as she learns of the Guardian during one of her travels and takes it upon herself to visit Karazhan at the time that Medivh was hosting his grand gatherings (Year -18). She was a particularly rare sight amongst the humans who had not yet traveled to Kalimdor. As the years and pain passed through her people from the loss of so many children, she left Cartouche once more to seek out Medivh, determining that such a powerful magic-wielder would produce a strong enough child to survive birth. During her return to Karazhan, however, she met the younger Khadgar and enticed the promising young mage into creating a child with her (using a ritual of which she did not reveal the specifics in her actions, only imploring to him that his help would aid her people) Her interactions with Medivh also allows Sargeras the opportunity to plant a seed within her mind. With Khadgar being under 18 (though an adult by WoW’s standards of the Age of Ascension) I thought it best to confine the creation of a child to an unknown ritual rather than through traditional means. Though you could really interpret such a thing however you wanted, I suppose. This particular line of thought came after my initial creation of Tara and the desire to put Khadgar in the place of her father. And though I still prefer that, I’ve chosen to leave it out of her in-game canonical history to avoid further bending the lore, despite the legitimacy in this situation being a possibility (as opposed, say, to completely absconding with his character and timelines and taking further artistic liberties in his personality and what his actions might’ve been) Though, I am of the mind that a young man, no matter how studious, might be easily swayed by the attention of a beautiful, intelligent, older presence in their life.)

Year 4

Tarvasha Winterscale is born and the core of her mother’s magical power is infused into her body in the form of an icy scaled crescent moon marked upon the infant’s hand.

Years 5-19

Tarvasha grows up studying various forms of magic and learning from the druids of the Glades. The Highborne of Cartouche largely despise her existence as she is incapable of aiding them as was promised. Utilizing any school of magic caused a drain on the girl’s life force, leaving her utterly useless to their plight. Though they had, in their minds, a legitimate reason to hate the child, they largely blamed their ire on her mixed blood. The only trait she shared with her elven kin was the length of her ears which were also static and hard, similar to the ears of a human.

Year 20

Tarvasha suffers her first heartache and decides to finally physically distance herself from her kin, cutting her ears and rounding them into a similar shape to humans. Her mother finds her shortly after and the devastation in her heart allows her to become corrupted by the impending demons.

The Burning Legion invades the Tranquil Glades, killing most of the Highborne of Cartouche and forcing Tarvasha to flee her homeland.

After nearly two weeks putting distance between herself and the elven forests, she comes upon a desolate land─and runs straight into the arriving Orcs. Oog’tar Snarllash bargains for her life and takes her as a slave in “payment” for keeping the others from simply killing her.

Years 21-25

Tarvasha is used as a pleasure slave and her surroundings and general situation deteriorate further as the years pass. During this time, she loses several children in miscarriages, stillbirths, and due to birth defects resulting from the combination of her own mixed blood colliding with that of the various orcs and other races who paid for her as well as the unsanitary, destitute conditions in which she was kept.

Year 26

Tarvasha carried the deformed child of an orc who put the infant to death out of grief. Her own grief overtook her and she went mad for a period of time. Oog’tar sent her to the boar pit where she was to fight for freedom or die with honor. She survived, only for another wave to be called by the dishonorable orc.

She was saved when a human slave stepped forward to call out the honorless act. A gladiator by the name of Crocbait.

Medivh: an asshole he will tease Khadgar for hours but honestly has a hard time not giving in because Khadgar begs so sweetly sometimes and light, he wants it too. Hilariously hates being teased himself (love-hates it) and will get really frustrated very quickly.

Medivh: in casual encounters he really isn’t very vocal but with Khadgar he never shuts the fuck up. He talks. Khadgar loves his voice and he uses that. He loves seeing Khadgar react to what he says, seeing how strongly a few words can effect him.

He doesn’t usually scream but he will curse and react in different ways whether it’s biting something so he doesn’t scream or almost blowing up Karazhan

Khadgar: loves being spanked. Often fantasizes about Med having him over his knee and spanking him. If it happens you can almost guarantee he’s going to come on him which just..adds all the more reason for punishment hm? (Medivh sucks at pretending he’s not absolutely thrilled about him doing it but thats okay)

Much like the reveal of Diablo 2 Resurrection, many Blizzard fans were anticipating the eventual release of The Burning Crusade Classic as the follow-up to WoW Classic. It seemed inevitable that Blizzard would revisit the first WoW expansion following “vanilla” WoW‘s recent success.

And yet, there’s something undeniably magical about the confirmation that we’re this much closer to the essential re-release of WoW: The Burning Crusade. Not only was TBC the first of many expansions in WoW history, it is what many consider to be one of the best eras in the history of one of the best video game franchises ever.

So as we prepare to dive back into Burning Crusade, let’s also look back at the Burning Crusade moments that we can’t wait to relive.

1. The Opening of the Dark Portal

The opening of the Dark Portal is undeniably a special moment in the history of Warcraft lore that is partially elevated by the memory of experiencing something truly new in a game that is genuinely beloved.

Yet, there is something genuinely special about this moment that lives on to this day. The feeling of watching hundreds of people wait at the threshold of this monolith that teased players since WoW launched is one of those moments that’s never quite been replicated.

Despite their best efforts, Blizzard has never crafted a transition between expansions quite as brilliant as entering the Dark Portal. It will be a purely magical moment to relive.

2. The Theatrics of the Karazhan Raid

It’s not that Karazhan is the first great raid in WoW history (far from it), but this was the raid that really proved to everyone what the team was capable of when they were at their best.

As what could be described as the party that never ends, Karazhan not only featured one of the most unique thematic concepts of any WoW raid before or since but a thematic quality that could only be described as one of Blizzard’s best environmental storytelling efforts ever.

Karazhan is still rightfully used as the measuring stick for even modern WoW raids. It’s a piece of operatic brilliance that hasn’t aged a day.

3. The Fight Against Kael’thas Sunstrider

Some of the best boss fights in old-school video game history features a multi-phase structure that teased victory just often enough to keep you on the hook. The battle against Kael’thas Sunstrider replicated the best elements of those old-school battles.

This marathon of a raid boss sees you navigate five distinct stages that often force you to deploy unique strategies. From brawls with unique melee weapons to a timed DPS check, the fight against Kael’thas Sunstrider is a truly epic encounter.

It’s not the hardest boss fight in TBC (more on that later), but in its own way, this is the boss fight that set a standard that so many tried (and often failed) to match.

4. Illidan and the Black Temple Raid

Few villains in WoW history were ever as hyped as Illidan Stormrage. He was the clear face of the Burning Crusade expansion and one of the clearest threats that WoW had ever known.

It’s a small miracle, then, that the battle against Illidan didn’t disappoint. While working your way up to Illidan, there’s a real sense that you’re working your way toward this ultimate presence that has been lingering somewhere above you for your entire journey.

Even if Black Temple isn’t the absolute best raid and Illidan isn’t the best raid boss, the combination of those two elements come together to form something that truly feels special in the way that the best raids should.

5. Burning Crusade’s Arena Battles

When WoW Classic‘s PvP scene finally debuted, many players felt like there was a little something missing. It turns out that little something may have been Burning Crusade‘s Arena battles.

TBC‘s introduction of team-based battles forever shaped WoW‘s PvP scene by alerting gamers to the fact that assembling the perfect PvP squad and sending them into battle captured the best elements of PvP conflict and PvE character building.

Was TBC‘s Arena meta perfect? Absolutely not. However, for millions of WoW Classic players who have spent hours building the perfect character, it’s going to be the first real chance to introduce them to the PvP scene.

6. Making That First Horde Paladin or Alliance Shaman

From a sheer lore perspective, you could certainly still argue for Blizzard’s decision to limit the Paladin class to Alliance players and the Shaman class to Horde fans. It was a fantastic way to add a little extra incentive to the idea of choosing one faction over the other.

Even still, there’s a larger argument to be made for how the decision to let both factions create characters for those iconic classes ultimately helped the balance of the game. That blend of lore and mechanics was never quite as perfect as it was when TBC finally let you create Alliance Shamans and Horde Paladins.

Granted, they weren’t the most “viable” classes at the time, but the novelty of being able to finally bridge the gap is going to inspire a lot of players to make these their first TBC alts.

7. Earning Your First Flying Mount

While playing through WoW Classic, you really started to feel the things that you truly missed. For many, one of those things was the ability to acquire flying mounts.

TBC‘s addition of flying mounts was considered to be one of the expansion’s best ideas at the time of its release, and that sentiment remains strong years later. It turns out that investing a huge amount of gold into the ability to fly around a zone is worth the investment.

Even modern WoW players will be able to appreciate how earning that first flying mount feels in TBC.

8. Finally Beating M’uru

Some of the most beloved WoW boss fights in the game’s history are also the most frustrating. There’s just something about a truly difficult challenge that brings people together like nothing else.

There are few better examples of that concept than M’uru. While not the best example of a WoW fight from a lore or thematic perspective, the sheer mechanical challenge of M’uru haunts players to this day. It’s one of the most intimidating WoW boss fights Blizzard ever crafted.

M’uru is going to challenge WoW players in a way that even the toughest WoW Classic fights never really did. We’ll see if this one ends up being a true guild breaker or a moment of pure triumph.

9. Showing off the Twin Blades of Azzinoth

Look, the fact of the matter is that some of the best gear in WoW history has been reserved for melee classes. There’s just something fundamentally cool about wielding a truly distinct weapon in your hands.

There are few better examples of that concept than the Twin Blades of Azzinoth. Not only are the thematic weapons of Illidan Stormrage one of the greatest WoW flexes ever from a purely visual standpoint, but they were some of the most powerful weapons that WoW players could ever dream of at the time of the TBC‘s release.

It takes a lot of effort and a lot of luck to unlock the Twin Blades. Thankfully, it all proves to be worth it for the simple pleasure of showing off.

10. Seeing True Class Diversity in Dungeons and Raids

Look, the truth of the matter is that high-end WoW players are always going to find the optimal class compositions for any scenario. That philosophy will almost certainly apply to the re-release of a WoW expansion.

Yet, there’s absolutely something to be said for how TBC made more classes more viable than ever before. While the balance changes that Blizzard made to classes like Druids are the most obvious example of this benefit, the more lasting benefit of this change may be how TBC‘s enhanced difficulty level made it more important than ever to invite the right players rather than the right classes.

High-end guilds will still look for specific compositions, but TBC will help ensure that those who prefer certain builds won’t be limited to the meme tier of raid invites.
