Because the school was so amazing at throwing in gender to their diversity talks for the day, it has stuck out at me as memorable and a lovely serendipitous date. But I decided to look up the actual date from 2012 and realized that we *missed* it! It would have been on January 16th, so I'm a day late. However, the 17th would have also been significant. It was The Day After. Avery was brave enough to go to a friend's skating birthday party as her unabashed self the prior weekend. The morning of the 16th, when she refused to put on any article of "boy clothes" and picked out this very "girly" outfit, I remember taking a photo of it and texting it to a friend. "Well, this is what Avery will wear to school today. I'm so afraid of what will happen." So what did happen? The next day, Tuesday January 17th, the sun came up. No! Really! And it's continued to rise every single day since then too. The world hasn't ended, although many toxic relationships have. The sullen, often shy, reserved, and cautious 4-year-old disappeared and before we knew it, had turned into a confident, proud, and fierce 9-year-old. And today, at 11 years old, having lived 7 years and 1 day more, Avery has never looked back. In fact, she really can't because those memories of being seen as and misgendered as a boy have almost completely faded. She will have the blessing of living her life only knowing what it's like to be seen as the amazing girl she is. What a gift. It's a gift I hope so many more people will get to experience as we learn to listen to kids when they tell us who they are. Happy anniversary, Sparkles.
