Her birth and marriage certificates both said she was 18 when she married Howard. And she’d been 37 when she and Howard had died in that crash. On the other side of the law side of things, Sophie Devereaux appeared less than a year after the deaths of Howard and Maria Stark. She was young, though James Stirling - a recovery agent for IYS Insurance - wrote that he thought she was up to a decade older than she said she was. Birth certificates were easy enough to fake. She’d been a small player on the international black market for art, working her way up to being perhaps the best known art thief in the world. And then she kinda sorta went straight, joining Leverage and fighting on the side of the angels. More or less, at least. There was the occasional piece of high-priced art or a trinket that found itself somewhere it wasn’t supposed to be. “An ordinary person with an extraordinary retirement plan,” indeed. He’d seen hundreds of photos of various white collar criminals over the years. He could identify half of them from grainy surveillance tape, and about half of those had been Stark Enterprises surveillance tapes. But this photo? This photo of Sophie Devereaux? She was approximately 20 years old, and holding a baby Tony. He knew the photo, had seen it many times before. It was one that Stark Industries used to show that Tony had been a patron of the arts since before he could walk. It was usually captioned with “Maria and Anthony Stark attend a gala at the Met.” The photo featured a tired looking, yet smiling Maria, holding a squirming Tony, standing in front of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. It wasn’t the photo. He’d seen the photo hundreds of times before. Thousands of times before. It was where he found the photo: in one of Stirling’s files on Sophie Devereaux. Someone, Stirling more than likely, had written “Maria Carbonell: Alias or real name?” across her picture. Tony took a deep breath, centering himself. He pulled up his parent's wedding photo, and ran both of them through a program to age them up. He knew it wouldn’t be exactly what they would have looked like had they lived, but it would be close enough. He used their wedding photo, so that he could notice and account for anything that was different as he aged them up to the ages they were when they died. The algorithm was more or less correct for them when they died, so he aged his mother up, five years at a time. 15 years after her “death”, he was staring at Sophie Devereaux. His mother was absolutely, positively, Sophie Devereaux. His mother… was still alive. And living in New Orleans, if the rumors about Leverage were true. Tony took another deep breath. He had a phone call to make.
Several thousand miles away, a man’s phone rang. He saw the number and smiled before he answered it. “I thought you’d never call,” he said, taking a seat. “It’s been far too long since we last saw each other… Really? …Hm… Interesting. …I like how you think. …I’ll pass along the message. What about that repeat of the Hamptons?”
