I think Toku has irreparably damaged the way I view fight scenes because if the heros at some point aren't on the ground visibly squirming trying to get up, I don't even bat an eye at whether or not they're gonna make it. More fight scenes should have their men squirm on the ground as the villain makes his big speech and then the hero slowly gets up to make his big speech

One of the more interesting parts of Shin Kamen Rider to me was when Ruriko was discussing "happiness" and "pain" were just one line apart from each other written out in kanji and later her brother also referenced the same thing to Hongo and Ruriko.

The way they discuss is naturally opposite to one another, Ruriko stating that you learn and grow from pain and become happy while Ichiro believes that happiness is frail and is always so close to becoming pain. While the writing around it is not particularly unique or genius on its own, it's through the actions of all the characters that make that theme really shine.

Our lives are made up of choices and changes that come at an instant and there's not much we can do to change that fact. Tragedy can happen whenever and wherever you are or to someone you love and as much as we want to try and hide ourselves or others from that tragedy as much as possible, it will happen and there's nothing else we can do about it. Ichiro is right that our happiness can be broken in an instant and we're always teetering on the line between hope and despair, but Ruriko proves her point better as she literally stood as the difference between happiness and pain for Hongo and Ichimonji.

It is her scarf, her drawing the line from their pain to turn it into happiness that allows them to become Kamen Rider and to stand up again despite being faced with so much pain and strife. Wrapping it around their necks, protecting their heads in a way with her sense of justice and happiness and redefining what their modified bodies mean. Ichimonji breaking through his brainwashing, having to survive all his own unspeakable trauma all at once but having the scarf with him when he snaps out of it and Hongo receiving it and being told that a hero needs something like it helps both of them define what they want in life and how to protect others.

It's not always about breaking or creating the line between happiness and pain, but how you treat those around you and how you want to see the world going forward.
