Someone in a Facebook group I belong to recently shared a post about vampires who’ve been around for centuries having their possessions accidentally end up in a museum, and it made me think of the legal end of your Urban Fantasy Professionals series. If you’re interested, I’d love to hear your take on that!
Oh yes! That was probably this post by @kayvsworld. A very good concept
But really... things like ownership and copyright are generally tied to a living person. So it all depends on how the law would define “living” and “person”. Any urban fantasy lawyer worth their salt would not stand for undeath being a state in which one could not retain the rights one possessed in death.
In the post the object that ended up in a museum is a personal letter. That’s an interesting one, because it has a breach of privacy as well as a display of a “written work” without the author’s consent. (Maybe my sister @badassindistress has something to say about this.)
But thinking of physical objects that a vampire is (or rather used to be) the owner of, opens up very different scenarios. Because just because something belonged to you once, if you lost it for a couple decennia, do you really still have a claim to it? Found objects usually have a period of time that the finder needs to make “proportional effort” to find the owner, after that the original ownership is often forfeit.
So really, I don’t want to involve lawyers in this... You know what I want
I want vampire sisters scouring every single costume auction and internet forum to find their little brother’s lost hat that he wore to his own funeral!
I want a werewolf breaking into a museum just so she can propose to her vampire lover with the ring that they had to sell back in 1789!!
I want three extremely lucky friends to find the Long Lost Copy of the vamps absolute favourite book in a little vintage book shop and giving it to him on his next death day with his very own hand drawn ex-libris still on the first page!!!
Yes, please and thank you
