Realms of Infinite Wonder: The Political Landscape

CWs: This post is going to discuss fantasy racism, bigotry, xenophobia, and especially dangerous bigots. It mentions white supremacists, Nazis by name, the nasty kind of Christian, and discrimination. Feel free to skip this one if you need to, it's mostly background.

In general, the political landscape is the same as in our world with a few added factions--there's already so much going on in ShOC that I decided I'd write the alternate history another day.

But of course, superpowers exist. And people will always have opinions on those different from themselves. For the most part, people like heroes and are ambivalent to the existence of powers in general. They've come a long way from the X-Men's depiction of society toward mutants. However, there are people on both sides of the opinion spectrum who tip over into being dangerous to holders of the other opinion or those they don't feel measure up. Powers are a bipartisan issue, but if someone is already being primed to see those different from them as dangerous, they're more likely to fall into the extremes of normalcy proponents or power supremacy.

Those who believe that superpowers are superior and those without are second-class citizens are called power supremacists. These guys get a lot of ex-Christian atheists who jump at the chance to disprove the Bible by pointing at powers. For the most part it's just pushing to loosen regulations on public power usage and promote heroes like Solar Flare, who has a nice, flashy, uncomplicated power. However, there are some people who take an active "make more people have powers" stance, whether through only letting people with powers have kids or inducing powers in those without. One of the main characters was victim to a group of the latter.

Those who believe that non-powered people are better than powers are called normalcy proponents. Statistically more American Christians fall in this group because of the tendency already there to decry everything supernatural and not obviously tied to their idol version of God as "demonic." For the most part it's pushing for draconian laws on power usage, both in public and private spheres, and promoting heroes without powers (who, in general, are not happy about their being less promoted for lack of flashiness being coopted for bigotry. There are some who embrace it, though, and anyone in their fanbases is sus). Some groups, though, take it as far as only letting "pure" humans without powers have kids and trying to remove people's powers.

Both groups get a lot of white nationalists, depending on whether the nationalist in question thinks powers are superior or inferior. Nazi Germany never came to a decision on whether powers were to be promoted or wiped out, so there tends to be waffling. Eventually if left to their own devices, the two groups will try wiping each other out, but they'll cause a lot of suffering to the targets they agree on first, so it's less ethical to wait it out.

On the magic side of things, there aren't many people campaigning to remove magic because if your parents are magic, they raise you to think magic is okay, and if you develop magic spontaneously, people tend to think it's powers and act accordingly. However, there have been fierce fights about the technical hierarchy of magic-users. The most dangerous of the factions that have survived is the Warrenist faction.

In 1837, Joshua Warren, a man who believed that wizards should rule everything all the time and were the most superior magic-users, led an uprising against the American magical government of the time, which was already in hiding because they'd gotten spooked by the witch hunts and Puritans'... everything. The Warrenists technically lost, thanks to the efforts of one Elsie Remington, but the belief survived and continues to worm its way into everything. They tend to autocannibalize when put together, because no one can agree on the hierarchy of magic-users beyond two points: wizards best and healers worst (because they prioritize combat power over all and healers only heal ever. Obviously.)

To end on a lighter note, most heroes think power supremacy and normalcy proponency are both stupid and advocate for balanced and fair laws. And certain nasty politicians are anti-powers and insulted a bunch of heroes, so they didn't get elected and the US is. Less of a nightmare.

2022 REWIND: Wesley Memorial Methodist Men's Ministry Treats WCHS Football Team to Dinner and Pep Talk 🏈 🍝 🗣 Giving back to the community appears in different ways. In this case, it came in the form of a home-cooked meal. Before the start of the season, Wesley Memorial Methodist invited WCHS Athletic Director Victor Hunt, Jr, Coach Maurice Crump, and the football team over for a pre-game dinner and a pep talk in August 2022. On the menu: Spaghetti, fresh garden salad, rolls, drinks, and to take with them on the road, a football-themed cake. Amongst the chatter between the men's ministry and the players were words of encouragement and the older generation sharing their childhood memories.
