#well… Uzi and n being tied actually

K, y’all. Can we talk about the abandonment issues Uzi may have?
(The info I’m about to share is just my thoughts on all this. I could be right on some parts, and I could be wrong. Again, I’m just sharing what I think based on stuff we’ve seen from the series. Anyways.)
What inspired me to make this was this very moment right here.
Tumblr media
“Are you like, gonna leave me?”
You can tell by her voice that she was scared. Scared that the only friend she’s ever had, the only friend that she’s made her whole life was going to leave her, and it certainly didn’t help that N and V got along well with the other students. Doing some activities together, having fun, playing around and stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think seeing this, this was the starting point of that fear in this episode. (I’m a little certain that in general, this may go back as early as the first episode, but I’ll talk about that in a bit.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s that fear she shows after investigating a little bit in the cabin, watching her closest friend get along and interacting with her classmates, despite having been a literal killing machine. And to add salt to the wound, he did so in such a short time. Something that she herself has never really accomplished the whole time she’s been in school.
Some jealousy may also be shown because of this, as she was talking to V, who was also doing well interacting with her classmates.
Tumblr media
“Just.. so glad you guys fit right in. Suuuper cool.”
As we all know, Uzi certainly isn’t the most popular girl in school (which btw… relatable imo). In fact, Rebecca had said that she was “super unpopular” when she (well, the top half of her anyways, hehe) reunited with a few drones, whom I’m assuming are her friends.
Uzi doesn’t fit in. She’s like an outcast to her classmates. The “freak” of the bunch. She stands out from the rest of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“… You freak us out.”
“But mostly bite me!”
(I’m sorry, I wanted to include that second part here, whether it was relevant or not pfbt. Anyways.)
And it’s not just her classmates that practically outcasted her. Hell, her own father left her to be murdered by the same kind of drone that took away his wife (well, technically, the same kind of drone that struck her with nanite acid, leading to him putting her out of her misery, according to himself from the pilot, but anyways). Now, he may have been too terrified to take action and save his own daughter, possibly reliving the trauma of what happened to Nori. He probably couldn’t fathom having to do the same thing he did to his wife to Uzi. But it still does not justify leaving her, his own daughter, for dead. That is a really shitty dad move there, Khan.
(Or I could be overthinking on that part, and Khan could just be a really shitty father, but anyways)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way Uzi may have taken it, was that he prioritized his precious doors over her. Having put up more doors to keep himself, and everyone else in the bunker, safe from drones like N. She wasn’t important enough to be saved at the moment she needed him most. Her father- the one who’s supposed to have her back, no matter what happened, the one who’s supposed to protect her whenever things go from bad to worse- had left her to be killed by a murder drone. (Possibly, I’m just spitballin here)
Once this happened, Uzi now has no one she can really trust to stick with her, no one she can rely on for support. She has no friends, barely has family; her father isn’t much like a father to her at all, let’s be honest.
(I would say Thad is the only one she kinda had, but if I remember correctly, they barely knew each other to be considered close friends in the pilot. The only reason Thad knew Uzi (or knew of Uzi) was because she’s Khan’s daughter. That was it.)
(Another thing I wanna add is how neglectful as a father Khan has been, even before the pilot. Hell, the posters that we see can speak volumes of how their relationship is. Not to mention he’s never really spent much (if any) quality time with her, too busy focusing on his obsession with doors.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(One more thing to add: remember when Uzi told Thad one of the reasons she made her sick as hell railgun was to earn her father’s respect? …That’s just another point I wanna make about the infamous Doorman and how well he’s raised his daughter.) :)
So yeah, Uzi never really had anyone close to her in her life, meaning that she didn’t have anyone to trust, either.
Until this goober shows up.
Tumblr media
(Or more like, he was about to kill her until she blew his head off, but that’s not the point.)
Of course, we all know they didn’t become best friends right away. Because he’s a disassembly drone, and she’s a worker drone, and… yeah.
If it wasn’t for Khan backing away from the fight and closing the door on Uzi, Uzi probably would’ve been dead right then and there. N probably would’ve killed her and everyone else without much of a second thought. However!
Tumblr media
Considering how he told Uzi about V and J, he didn’t have the best relationship with either of them. (his crush on V seemed one-sided, at least in that flashback where V’s character was introduced? And J just straight up insulting him while stepping on him, and talking about how she’d kill him if she were allowed to.) He didn’t seem to have anyone to consider a friend either, at least mutually. For the longest time, it was just N, V, and J, doing their jobs, working together on killing the worker drones and such.
Then, what Uzi said to him about how the company treats the drones had created some doubts. N never questioned JCJenson and their motives until Uzi came along. And because of that, he almost died via a virus put in by J.
Then, after Uzi saves him from dying, and after they both stop V and J from killing the worker drones, N still stood by her side. N has never given her a reason not to trust him after that. He’s been with her the whole time after Uzi banished herself, and he’s never left her like the other drones have.
I’m thinking, after Uzi had banished herself from the colony, N could have left her on her own, he could’ve refused to let her go with him and V back to the landing pod, but he didn’t. (Not only because Uzi had encouraged him to look at the bigger picture, so to speak, but it also would’ve been out of character for N of all people (or robots in this case lol) to just deny her of joining the squad. He’s such a goddamn softy, let’s be real here.)
(Also, I wanna point out that from N’s perspective, she was the one who encouraged him to become an “angsty, rebellious disassembly drone” in the first place. If it wasn’t for her, he would never even question why they’re killing worker drones to begin with (other than to consume the oil for survival, of course). If it wasn’t for her, he’d still be out murdering. She was the one who respected him more than V or J ever did combined. (Well, in V’s case, this would be after her memories became messed up anyways. She did seem to like him when they were worker drones themselves.))
So yeah, this whole time, N has been the only one Uzi had ever really had throughout the series. N has been the only one that didn’t treat her like a freak, nor had insulted or threatened her in any way (lookin at you, V!). And most importantly, he was the only one that never left her at all. He stood by her side, he had her back, and she had his, and they stuck together, especially through the scary stuff.
So going back to episode 4, that was the first time since they’ve met that they were really separated. And the one time they weren’t with each other, Uzi had taken her solver form for the first time, and had killed her own classmates as a result.
Tumblr media
Had N been with her while she was investigating stuff, chances of Uzi taking her solver form happening probably would’ve been really low.
Hell, this whole thing probably happened because she was alone, because nobody was with her, and she didn’t want to be left alone again, and she was scared that she was going to be left alone again after seeing N interact with the other students!
TLDR: Uzi probably has abandonment issues, and was scared the only friend she has was going to leave her like everyone else had in her life.
I wanted to make a long rant about this because it’s been on my mind off and on for a while, especially after hearing Uzi’s voice when she asks N if he’s going to leave her (god that really hurts!), and as sucky as I am with words, I wanted to try anyways. Hope y’all enjoyed. 😁😅 (and now to end this on a lil lighter note, here’s an image of a robot huggy)

OKAY I NEED TO RAMBLE ABOUT MURDER DRONES LORE SO HERE WE GOOOOO
The biggest mystery so far revolves around what exactly the Absolute Solver is and how it relates to the Disassembly & Worker drones as well as Cyn. I personally think I have mostly figured this out, although of course details may change as more episodes release and I am open to being proven wrong.
Simply put, I don't think the Absolute Solver is a program. Or perhaps it is a program in form, but it wasn't written by anyone. The Absolute Solver is an eldritch force, or the product of an eldritch force, some entity that gives the drones these powers. I gathered this from the first scene after the Zombie Drones tape in Episode 5, when we see Cyn buried deep in a pile of broken drones (we can see her name on the armband). She seems to reactivate after a dormant period, and her screen flashes with code before returning to glitchy eyes. This code, if you read it, seems to be a dialogue with something, somewhat obscured but readable are statements like "hello :)", "I see you are---", "I will not discard you" , "Absolute[S---] Access Y/N", and "I see you will be here for---". The Absolute Solver definitely appears to be eldritch in nature, and this I think is finally evidence enough to confidently state that some eldritch entity contacted Cyn thanks to her distress, and offered her its power so she could avoid being disassembled.
Cyn, therefore, is an avatar of the Absolute Solver, the first drone to use it and perhaps even fundamentally tied to its code. She metamorphosed into the tentacled, clawed, eye-form that we saw in episode 2 and flashes of in 5, and used her holograms to disguise herself as a worker, albeit an erratic and wobbly one thanks to her imperfect control of her puppet body. I suspect that any use of the Absolute Solver is tied back to Cyn somehow, Cyn being buried in the code of every drone with access to it. She seemed to take over Uzi in episode 4, and was deleting N & V's memories in episode 5, so some part of her is still there despite her original body presumably being long gone.
As for how it relates to Disassembly drones, I suspect Cyn designed them to be ideal avatars of herself/the Absolute Solver. We know drones infected by Cyn's program in some way end up mutating into Disassembly drone-esque forms, and I think Cyn just innovated on these mutations. See the basement in episode 5, containing pieces of all three Disassembly drones that we know in their servant forms, as well as pieces of the modern Disassembly design. The X screen appears to be a symptom of this, representing the OS error that causes these murderous instincts, a visual of Cyn's virus, although the manifestation of Cyn herself appears to be signified by the actual Solver symbol.
And for why this eldritch force granted the Absolute Solver in the first place? Well, in the background of Tessa's room we can see lots of occult decorations and objects, indicating a desire of hers, including a literal summoning circle with candles. Perhaps Tessa was indulging in her hobbies, and was a little more successful than she bargained for.
It's also cool how the Solver symbols that appear around the Drones' hands seem to be related to tools used in 3D software- Move, Rotate, that sort of thing. Whatever entity created the Absolute Solver customized it to the processors of the robots it was intending to infect.
And this also ties back to the Overheating thing, one of the first things we learned about Disassembly Drones! The use of the Absolute Solver program is processor-intensive and causes rapid overheating of the drone that wields it. This in turn causes them to crave oil to cool themselves down again. The Disassembly drones appear to have some element of the solver in them passively, which is why they need it all the time, but for Worker drones like Uzi, Doll, and Cyn, it appears directly related to their use of the program- Doll had massive stockpiles of oil and kept herself cool with it, letting her use her abilities to their highest extent, while Uzi, ignorant of their exact functions and reluctant to indulge the oil cravings, overheated multiple times and eventually completely lost it. Based on episode four I also suspect that allowing too much overheating ends up causing OS errors, like Uzi's sensitivity to the ticking of the clock and the lights in the cabin, which in turn opens the way for Cyn's remnants to start taking over.
Okay that's all I have I think!!! I don't quite know what the Collars are yet, how the Disassembly Drones are related to JC Jensen if they are avatars of the Solver, or what it means that J came back with Tessa. But I suspect that at least some or maybe most of these will be solved next episode, thanks to the green roboroach being referred to as a "key" and likely entering some sort of lab. Perhaps there were experiments done on the Absolute Solver by humans after the incident at the mansion, and the worker drones used were given experiment numbers? Maybe even the core collapse we learned about in episode 1 was actually a consequence of this??? I don't know, but I'm super excited to find out. This lore is just so cooool, especially just the idea of an eldritch being deciding to contact robots instead of humans! There's a whole other level of horror when it's not just flesh twisting and mutating, but flesh where there shouldn't be flesh at ALL.

: The day Uzi came was a huge change for you I mean that gun could have KILLED YOUR BEST FRIEND
: When N followed Uzi to make up for what happened you kinda just clung onto him during it until V and J went in the vents you weren't to bloodthirsty yet so you just stuck to N
:you and N stuck with Uzi you were on temporary shut down cause Uzi kinda hit you pretty hard upside the head with her gun( you got hungry and tried to go after her)
: When you woke up Uzi was working on N to who now has a virus thanks to J she "kindly" informed you of and you weren't too happy about it so you decide to go after them through the vents and you know what happens big fight J gets her head shot V gets tied up and your noise bleeding seeing her fight you know the whole sha-bang ( do they even have noses....well they do now!)

: the day Uzi came in and ranted you got a little I don't wanna say scared but maybe a little {plus every time she says bite me you kinda actually kinda want to bite her for some reason?}
: Uzi had said some pretty weird stuff was happening at the door place or well her home she was apparently exiled from due to the previous situation.
: You kinda just hung on N's back on the way there while you both ranted about things you found like how you found a old store full of cool stuff but that's a story for later~
: When you all got in there you purely went off because of the smell of that sweet succulent oil~
: Uzi and N got a little concerned due to you giggling but we won't talk about that!
: I'm pretty sure we all know the story from the You and N get flashbacks to some mansion
:The whole eldritch J situation
: The amount of concern on V's face when you came back was a little overwhelming.
: But she knows you can handle yourself!
: HELL that's one of the reasons she fell for you not just your happy attitude that only her and N get to see { Uzi hasn't got to that level yet} She found it so cute and endearing that she got close and fell into that lovely pit known as you~
Finding the store
: You and her were scouting around one day just being yourselves and you spotted something abnormal to the area so you both went to check it out for fun
:Ounce you got there you wiped off some snow from what looked to be a sign it said " Spencers? you said in a questioning tone Idk I guess that's what it says V shrugged and broke the glass doors so you both could get inside.
: when you both got in you were indulged with excitement why you may ask it's where humans used to shop! How do you know? Frozen bodies in the store
:You both walked around for a little and after a while you got to the back and saw some " things"
: when you did you both just moved back to the front of the store
: And you both cuddled and talked about random stuff
:after a little you both looked around again and guess what you found.....!
: CANDY! and ya'll had spare oil from ya'lls scout made that even better!

"Let me take care of you, Uzi. You've been doing too much. And honestly, you seem exhausted."
Tumblr media
Huh? Was she doing too much? Uzi wasn't paying attention in the slightest. Not after recovering N's and V's memories. Guess she wasn't paying attention. Nice to know that someone was actually looking out for her. Actually caught her off guard. The goth started to push her bangs back a bit, she couldn't directly look at the other. N wanted to take care of her? Her? She didn't know what to say. All her life she was alone until up at this point. Uzi never had another person look after besides her Father. And well... She was definitely still pissed at him for leaving her out to 'die'. N was always there for her. But... He really wanted to do that... For her...?
Tumblr media
"I-I mean if you want to N... Guess I was too distracted on trying to help you guys out..."
Because she cared. She actually cared. It all tied upon trying to figure out what this Solver bs was... And figure out what happened with her mom... But besides all that she cared for these drones... And N actually made her feel like she was actually worth something. Being with him was the best part of her days.
"Just... Don't go Butler mode on me okay?!"

“Tremors” – welcome to perfection
Tumblr media
(originally published on Talkbacker.com on April 8, 2014)
You only need to catch a glimpse of the “Jaws”-parodying poster for “Tremors”, and you’ll know exactly what to expect. These filmmakers aren’t about to throw blood and guts or dark stuff at ya. This is strictly tongue-in-cheek; there ARE underground monsters, they eat people, there will be deaths, but there will also be hilarious dialogue, great characterizations, gorgeous desert vistas, and some high-quality filmmaking and practical effects-work here.
Someone should deserve a special award for casting Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward as the main protagonists in this film. As we are introduced to Valentine “Val” McKee (Bacon) and Earl Basset (Ward), the instant and natural chemistry between these two is palpable. It’s a match made in movie heaven. Val and Earl wake up in the desert, in true cowboy-style, one sleeping in the back of their pickup truck, the other sleeping under it. The cowboy analogy actually reminds me of another great pairing, Butch and Sundance. That’s probably the closest comparison of the character dynamics that’s going on between Val & Earl.
Val is the younger one, a dreamer, a womanizer (with a very special list of qualities he expects from a woman: “You will have long blonde hair, big green eyes, world class breasts, ass that won’t quit and legs that go all the way up.”) and the more restless soul. Earl is the older, wiser, laconic, practical man. But the unifying quality of both Val and Earl is, they are not the all-knowing, all-powerful movie heroes. They are actually both kinda…dummies. In a good way. In an entertaining way. I don’t know how much Bacon and Ward hung out or rehearsed before the shooting of this film, but they are clearly having a blast with their characters. Most of the stuff they do has a spontaneous, improvisational feel to it. I would certainly like to see them work together again sometime.
Tumblr media
Earl Bassett: “Is this a job for an intelligent man?” Valentine McKee: “Well, show me one and I’ll ask him.”
Val and Earl are the for-hire “handymen” in the Town of Perfection (population 14), located in a vast Nevada valley surrounded by mountains from all directions. As the town’s survivalist nut Burt Gummer (more about HIM later) states: “that’s why we chose this place. Total isolation.” Besides Val and Earl, the township consists of: storeowner Walter Chang (the great Victor Wong), pottery maker Nancy (Charlotte Stewart) and her daughter Mindy (“Jurassic Park”‘s Ariana Richards), Melvin (Robert Jayne), Dr.Wallace and his wife (Conrad Bachmann and Carol Marcus – I mean, Bibi Besch), Miguel (Tony Genaro), Nestor (Richard Marcus), Old Fred (Michael Dan Wagner), Edgar Deems (Sunshine Parker) aaaand of course, the aforementioned Burt Gummer and his wife Heather (Michael Gross and Reba McEntire). Also in town is a graduate student of seismology, Rhonda LeBeck (Finn Carter), who is the EXACT opposite of everything in Val’s list, but it’s pretty obvious what’s going to happen there, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
Earl Bassett: “We gotta run. We’ve got a schedule to keep.” Valentine McKee: “Yeah. See, we plan ahead, that way we don’t do anything right now. Earl explained it to me.”
But as the story begins, the number of characters begin to decrease. In fact, one of them is already gone at the point where the movie begins. As Val and Earl finally have had enough of this shit (literally, as emptying a septic tank blows in their faces), they come across Edgar Deems, sitting on top of an electrical tower. Edgar, who apparently was a town drunk, has actually died from dehydration. As the doctor diagnoses, he’s been sitting up on the tower, probably for days. Here’s the first sign, that something’s rotten in Perfection. Well, UNDER it, to be more precise.
Now, the director, Ron Underwood, does even more emulating from “Jaws” that just the poster. The underground creatures appear mostly off-camera for the longest time, much like the shark. The following attacks on people, Old Fred and the doctor and wife, are filmed very efficiently, adding mystery to the monsters while also showing their viciousness and extreme strength, as the doctors wife is sucked inside the ground while hiding inside a Ford station wagon! These creatures mean business. Also, two road-construction workers who are working on the only road in and out of town, get quickly dispatched and the resulting rock slide cuts Perfection completely off from the outside world. The scene includes a brilliant physical jackhammer gag, that’s like something right out from a Warner Brothers cartoon. And in this latest viewing I noticed, that there are a LOT of cartoon gags in the film.
Underwood is clearly using a Tex Avery-playbook in the way he shoots action, and it adds an extra level of fun to the overall tone of the film. Especially the demises (spoiler there) of each of the creatures are a carefully balanced mix of cartoon and grossness. From a creature coming in contact with concrete at full speed with a big “boink”-sound effect into the last one taking a Wile E. Coyote-swan dive off a cliff. And in the end of the second act, a creature entering “the wrong goddamn rec room” – Gummers’ basement – and getting drilled with more bullets than in your average John Woo film.
The Gummers. Ahh yes, the Gummers. Let’s talk about them for a bit.
Tumblr media
Earl Bassett: What kind of fuse is that? Burt Gummer: Cannon fuse Earl Bassett: What the hell do you use it for? Burt Gummer: My cannon!
Until “Tremors”, Michael Gross was basically known as the liberal, ex-hippie father Steven Keaton in “Family Ties”. One day after filming the last episode of that show, Gross began filming “Tremors”. Now talk about switching gears; Burt Gummer is a polar opposite of Steven Keaton. He’s a paranoid survivalist, definitely right wing, a gun nut with a capital “N”. The Gummer home is basically a bunker, set up for end-of-the-world conditions. Or as Burt states after the monster attack: “Food for five years, a thousand gallons of gas, air filtration, water filtration, Geiger counter. Bomb shelter…” That tells all about good old Burt’s world views. As does the license plate of his car: UZI 4U.
His wife Heather is played by country singer Reba McEntire in her first film performance. She does a damn good job too. Heather is likable, but also just as tough-as-nails as Burt and can certainly handle guns as well.
The creatures – Graboids, as they have been known since, in sequels and TV-series alike – are designed by Tom Woodruff and Alec Gillis’ company Amalgamated Dynamics and they are some of the best and most realistic creature work that’s been ever put on screen. Basically pre-historic worms – although the characters are trying to make up all kinds of explanations for them, from being aliens to government-built monsters to be used against invading forces. AD has worked on the “Alien”-franchise since “Aliens”, and one can see that the “double-mouth”(biting tentacle tongues shooting out from a larger mouth) has evolved from the star-beast’s similar one. These creatures are strong, fast (moving like armored freight trains underground) and smart. That is always a welcome thing in monster films. Graboids are constantly adapting, and the means that the heroes use to avoid them, don’t necessarily work for a second time. Of course they have a weakness, this time it being loud noises, as they basically sense everything by vibrations. Smart, almost “National Geographic”-approach. Nothing hokey or supernatural. Just the way I like it.
Tumblr media
Earl Bassett: “Hey Rhonda – you ever seen anything like this before?” Valentine McKee: “Oh sure, Earl. Everyone knows about them – we just didn’t tell you.”
Pretty soon the remaining residents of the town are forced into exile, trying to escape into the mountains while pursued by the hungry beasts, the final confrontation happening on the edge of a tall canyon. “Tremors” was shot – with the exception of two sets – on location. Outside in Lone Pine, California. And you can basically SMELL the desert, and the heat,  in every frame of the movie. The setting, as well as the look of the town, evokes memories of the great westerns. In fact – the third sequel for the movie IS a western, going back in time to the golden years of Perfection.
Too bad the sequels are of diminishing quality, adding unnecessary sci-fi elements (such as FLYING Graboids, WTF?) and poorer quality effects. The unifying element in the sequels (as well as the quickly cancelled after 13 episodes TV-show) is Michael Gross’ Burt. But to be absolutely frank, Burt Gummer is not a leading man. He works best in small doses. The driving force in this film is the tag team of Val & Earl, arguing, bickering, rock-paper-scissoring through near-death scenarios and finally coming up as winners (spoiler).
Tumblr media
I’m sensing a pattern in my reviews (besides all so far being from 1990); “Tremors” was only a modest hit at the box office, but it went on to become a huge hit on home video and subsequent media. But as I go through my lists of great films, such seems to be the case with almost all of them. “Tremors” is funny, well-paced, beautifully shot thrill ride, with wonderful characters and rich, quotable dialogue. If that is not the sign of a cult classic, I don’t know what is. Ron Underwood proceeded to direct films like “City Slickers” (keeping up with the western tone from this film), “Heart and Souls”, “Speechless” and finally “Pluto Nash”, which basically killed his mainstream career, reducing him into mostly a TV-director.
Too bad – perhaps another low budget monster movie is what he should try again…?
