C3. Artist Conversation: Christopher Suarez
Artist: Christopher Suarez
Exhibition: Anaheim to Avalon
Media: Ceramics, wood, metal wires, mixed media
Gallery: LBSU School of Art,  Marilyn Werby
Website: N/A

1.Christopher Suarez is a senior currently working towards his MFA degree in Ceramics at Long Beach State School of Art. He also was born and raised in Long Beach. Besides art being his passion, he also enjoys  playing sports. Christopher also spends most of his time sketching or making different things that are around in our surroundings, in which he gets most of his ideas to construct art. His goal for the audience is to “reflect on and reconnect with the world around us”.
2.Analyzing Christophers work, the first thing that stood out to me as part of their audience, was the beautiful drawings that were drawn in wood, with different designs. Also, the different pieces of metal that were constructed into swirls ranging from light colors such as blue and white, to darker colors, mostly the colors were muted. I noticed there were different sizes of ceramics, from big to small, to white to dark. I have also seen, wood plates, wires,  with different designs, representing mayan and aztec’s designs. According to Suarez, his art project took at least the whole summer up until now, so in total of five months.
3.Christopher being a Mexican-American, his art represents his Long Beach community. Christopher describes his art, being his early childhood memories when he would cruise around from Long Beach to Wilmington, to go to his cousins house . His work also symbolizes “familial history, love and intimacy, and urban infrastructure.” In other words, his art represents the sweat, blood, tears, that architecture brings, the “... deconstruction of the elements that make up our world.” His ideas of exploring in this work, was mostly from being observant to his surroundings as a child and giving back to his community.
4. As being part of his audience, I totally agree with his work and felt a connection. Me being an observant person, I literally take time to look and appreciate our surroundings. When I see a construction worker, or see something built, I take something out of it and put it into deep thought. I thought his work was beautiful, and his message as well.

Werby Gallery CSULB
Sulki Kim is the artist for this gallery. She is a graduate student here at Long Beach State on her third year. Her plans are to graduate with a MFA degree specializing in painting. She loves painting. Sulki came here from South Korea to go to high school here in the US. There are several other artist in this gallery that she is sharing. Her one piece that is in this gallery is a tub that she made from clay and cement.
Her bathtub is a full sized bathtub. She did make this by hand with the cement and clay. She placed other things around and on the bathtub that is also hand made. Some things that she placed are things like a hairbrush with realistic hair on it, other things on the tubs are shampoo bottles. By looking at these objects they sort of give you a feeling of being like natural, I say this because all the objects are real, they are shaped in a real way, they aren't boxes or fake looking. All the objects around and on the table have colors that stand out and are pretty vibrant. Some colors we see are, pink, green, orange, and a little red. These colors and shapes bring life to the objects. A few other things like the shampoo spilling out of the bottle show nice attention to detail. The tub is really wavy and has many textures, the reason for this is because it is hand made and she used cement and clay, so due to that there are many styles and textures on the tub. Even though the pice has some things about it it still is pretty cool to look at. I think its pretty cool that you don't need a lot of explanation as to what the pice is because you can clearly see what the different objects are.
Sulki said that this pice was inspired by her mother. The reason she said her mom is her inspiration is because her mom always bugged her about not having a clean room and not having a clean bathroom even though she herself was always clean. This art work is in respect of her mom. She says it's because most of her art is drawn by her inspiration from her mom. She says that she gets a lot of her inspiration from different types of people but mostly of her family. She said that the bathtub took about 6 weeks to do. She even hurt her back because of how heavy the materials were. Sulki likes to watch movies made by Disney and play games when she has free time. Sulki said that she also gets inspired from the movies she watches. Her plans are to graduate with a degree specializing in painting, but she said that she has been working more with sculpting as her side hobby. She hopes to open a studio in her later life. Because she has been doing sculpting asa side hobby that's why she has this bathtub pice instead of a painting or drawing. Even though her bathtub pice doest have a certain title, she thinks that “people should remember the little things in life and not worry about appearances too much.”
In my opinion, everyone in the world can relate to this piece because everyone has something that is messy. Most people just worry about how they look and don't worry about their life and most often we Cath ourselves being something that we aren't. I personally couldn't relate to her pice in the sense that a room of mine or something that I own is dirty, I love my car, room, bathroom, even my house at home I love everything to be clean. Her relationship with her mom is funny to think about because I wonder if I was like that how it would be for me. I grew up with a hispanic mom so everything had to be clean and I learned to do chores and make my mom happy. I really liked this piece I think mostly because of how much time and work she had to put in this piece and it makes me appreciate it more.

Artist: Julie Fallon

1. Julie Fallon is currently an undergraduate student working for her Bachelors of Fine Art in the spring. She is in a program called Illustration and animation. she was born in San Diego and describes her personality to be quirky and in love with cartoons. When she was growing up, making friends was difficult fro her to make. As she grew up, she started to make connections with her cartoon characters. The more she created the more she got sucked into the world of her cartoons and the adventures they would have.
2. For her art gallery, she displayed different cartoon characters. For her first display, she uses the computer to create a design of her character moving around, without the colors. Then in the next picture, the same characters is the  colored in and is displayed in different angles of the character. The next display is a black and white comic. the comic is a story of a bear discovering a bee hive in a log. So, the bear comes over and starts to pick at the hive and get honey. But a worker bee discovers the bear as an attacker, and stings the bear. Then the bear gets angry and continues to pick at the bee hive. The queen bee is enraged and orders her colony to attack the bear. In conclusions, the bear is scared away and the bear learns to mess with bees. Along with her other displays, there is an art piece that catches my eye. It gave me flashbacks of “The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy” . Instead of the grim, there is an image of a girl with the same characteristic of billy playing around with grim’s idol.
3. the artist find’s her inspiration through the cartoons she used to watch, when she was little. As she continues to draw characters, she is drawn to create real life connections and to become an animator for future children show cartoons. Her goal it to create a society of people who are quirky and are passionate about cartoon characters. She wants to be an animator because she wants to give back to the community of children show cartoonists. on her journey to become an animator, she finds a sense of belonging and purpose.
4. While I was in the art gallery, I noticed Julie Fallon’s art work because I saw a cartoon character that gave me memories of my childhood. I appreciate the work of the artists because she has created a passion for cartoon characters from her childhood, to become an animator for future generations. I would like my kids to be able to bring upon nostalgic memories, when they watch cartoons. Her artwork is easy on a kid’s eye, along with grabbing there attention.

Julie Fallon is an artist currently enrolled at California State University Long Beach, attempting to gain her bachelors in Fine Arts. She has always been a cartoonist, drawing even as a little kid growing up in San Diego. She considered her love for cartoons quirky and she says that she translates herself onto her work.
There were multiple cartoons at the museum, but Julie’s art caught my eye because for me it felt familiar. I felt like I recognized her art. The cartoon pieces seem like characters that I would see on television or in a comic. Her art also seemed to be colored not as bright. There were multiple figures with each cartoon in each frame as different cartoon styles.
Julie used her art as a way of tributing to the old cartoon shows that she grew up loving. Cartoons are an important part of her life. She used the cartoons she drew to connect with other people in her life. Her cartoons helped bring her a sense of belonging. She uses her cartoons to hopefully inspire the young generations to hopefully give them find a purpose just like she once did.
Like I said before, her art is the art that caught my eye because it felt familiar. Looking at her art brought me back to when I was a kid and watching television while eating my breakfast. As a kid I would sometimes draw cartoons also and when looking at her art it makes me feel like I am a kid again.

Julie Fallon is currently an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor in Fine Arts this spring. The program that she is in is Illustration and animation. She grew up in San Diego. She describes herself when she was small as a quirky, cartoon- loving kid. She had a bit of trouble making friends, but as a result she found herself making connections thought the world of cartoons. She enjoyed the characters and joined them on their “wacky” adventures every afternoon.
Julie Fallon presented her artwork and to describe formally, she made small to medium art. Colors that she used were more on the dark side, as most of her art consisted of halloween themes. Two of her artwork that she had up were sketch- like, so they consisted of colors on grayscale. Most of the her work had multiple figures on them placed separately on the same board.
Her art her way of showing her affinity for watching those cartoon shows as a kid. Drawing the characters lead her to form real life connections. Her goal is to form connections in real life with other people who are also the same as her. Quirky, with the fond of loving cartoons. Her passion for art helped her find a sense of belonging and it also helped her find a purpose. With her work, her goal is set as an animator is to impact kids of future generations in the same way the shows and films she would watch and love impacted her.
While I was looking around the art gallery, Julie Fallon’s gallery caught my attention the most. It reminded me of when I was small, and would always watch cartoons in this style. It gave me sort of a nostalgic feeling. One of the cartoon figures that she made actually reminded me of a show I used to be obsessed with. The halloween themed cartoon animations she made were interesting to view as well because they look well fitting for the kid’s eye. Julie Fallon’s art gallery overall made me remember of my childhood presence.

Werby Gallery CSULB
Sulki Kim is currently a third year graduate student at CSULB. She plans to graduate with an MFA degree specializing in painting. She is originally from Seoul, South Korea and she came to the United States when she started high school. She shares the Werby exhibition with several other artists and their works. Kim has one piece within this gallery of a bathtub made with clay and cement.
Her piece consists of a full sized bathtub that is handmade from clay and cement. There are several other handmade objects placed on and around the bathtub such as shampoo bottles and hairbrushes with realistic hair stuck on it. These handmade objects give the overall piece a very natural feeling because none of the shapes are perfectly round or have a straight angle which is the way the piece is supposed to feel like. The different objects around the tub have many colors vibrant colors such as orange, green, and pink which gives life to the artwork. Some other things such as the shampoo spilling out of the bottle show nice attention to detail. Due to being handmade, the actual tub has many different textures as the bottom of the tub is round but has cracks while the top layer of the tub has many bumps and is very rough. Overall the piece is very simple and eye pleasing. You can tell what each object is and the use of color is nice because the overall tub is a white color but the small objects that have colorful tones make the artwork exciting.
Sulki explained that this specific piece was inspired from her mother. Kim told me that her mom always nags her about how dirty her room and bathroom is while her appearance is clean. The piece is an homage to her mom because Kim draws a lot of her inspiration for her artwork from her. In general Kim explained that she tends to gain a lot of inspiration from different people she meets whether it is her family members or past boyfriends. The entire piece took six weeks to make and she injured her back during the process simply because of how heavy all the materials were. In her free time, Kim likes to play games and watch a lot of Disney movies which also give her some inspiration. She plans to graduate with a degree specializing in painting, however, in the past years she has been working more with sculpting as a side hobby which is why she chose to showcase a sculpture piece instead of a painting/drawing. Although the piece does not have a title or specific goal in mind, Kim explained that she thinks people should remember the little things in life and not worry about appearances too much. In the future, Kim hopes to open up a personal studio.
I think almost everyone can relate to to Kim’s piece because a lot of people have messy rooms and bathrooms. Overall people focus on the main goal which is our physical appearance when it comes to things like showers. It is funny to think about how we use the shower to clean ourselves but often times the shower room is messy. I can also relate to her relationship with her mom because even to this day, my mom still nags me about how dirty my own room is. Even if I clean up the mess in my room it still ends up messy within a couple of days. Overall I really enjoyed Kim’s piece because of the simplicity of the artwork itself and also the concept and inspiration behind the piece.

Artist: Yichih Wang
Exhibition: In Between
Media: Metal, Wood, Jewlery
Gallery: LBSU, Marilyn Werby Gallery
Instagram: Yichih_w
Yichih Wang is an undergraduate student studying 3D Media at Cal State Long Beach. She originally had gone to Pasadena College and majored in drawing and painting and then transferred to CSULB and plans to graduate in spring 2020 with a BFA . Her gallery was her senior show and was titled, In Between. Wang was born in Taiwan where she first started making various forms of art and moved to the United States at the age of 18. .
Wang’s gallery consist mostly of metal and woodwork pieces that vary in size, shape and colors..The level of detail in many of the pieces shows the amount of time and attention to detail in many of the pieces especially the smaller ones. There are also wood and ceramic bowls that have various herbs and vegetables in them. The ceramic bowls had a rougher texture and also had come chips in the edges of the bowl. . The  utensils and trinkets were all laid out as if they were presented in a restaurant or for dinner and shows a very minimalist dining room vibe.
Wang states that in her gallery she had blended the two cultures of American and Taiwanese dining together to express her perspective of it. She uses very earthy and basic designs from the East Asian influence while adding the sharp and defined shapes and metals that are usually associated with American dining..Her wood works and bowls generally take her less than a day to make while her metal work usually takes around a month to complete  She infuses silver and copper in her metal art pieces.  Wang’s testiment to her identity through the two cultures is expressed in the level of detail she places in each bowl as she shows how the blend of the two cultures has formed her own identity and expressed it through the universal act of a meal.
Wang’s gallery was wonderful representation of  East-Asian culture in the customs and style of the bowls and meals eaten. Traditionally there are many vegetables and herbs incorperated into soups and other basic meals while limiting the amount of utensils to often just two of them. The gallery is a very visually appealing and detailed piece that gives appreciation to the intricate yet simple style of dining in East Asian.

Artist: Yichih Wang
Exhibition: “In Between
Media: Metal, wood, jewelry
Gallery: Marilyn Werby Gallery, CSULB

Yichih Wang is an artist that was born on an island in East Asia known as Taiwan. Wang spent the majority of her life in Taiwan making different types of arts. After she graduated from high school, she moved to the United States to pursue a career in fine arts. She went to Pasadena College to major in drawing and painting. This changed as she took a jewelry crafting class with her friend and she loved it. She transferred to California State University of Long Beach to pursue her new career as a 3D Media major as she gets to work with metal and wood. She is a BFA student who is going to graduate this upcoming semester. Her hobbies include making art and such as drawing and painting in her free time.
Wang’s art pieces in her gallery are unique than others because it varies in texture, shape, color and scale. Most of her artwork consisted of bowls that were in different colors such as brown, and white. The material used to create her bowls were wood and her other artwork were made of metal. The wood gave the bowls a smooth texture and Wang had herbs inside the bowls that gave everyone a sense of comfort such as feeling they were at their home’s dining room. Most of her artwork range were small in size or scale. For instance, the bowls that were displayed at her art gallery were small, but it captured the student’s attention because of the designs it had on its texture. Majority of her artwork had a round or circular shape and others were made into a design. There were a couple of artworks that were displayed in her gallery were sinuous as it had many curves. There were also a couple of her artwork that were straight compared to the sinuous art pieces.
The meaning behind the art pieces in Wang’s “In Between” exhibition was to display her East Asian culture and her American sides through these artworks. Her art is inspired by everything she has witnessed and experience through her East Asian culture and American culture. This is her way of expressing that she is in-between her Taiwanese identity and American identity. She told a group of students that she feels like a stranger every time she goes back to her native country, but at the same time she feels like an outsider in the U.S. She uses food in her art gallery as a representation of her native culture. At the same time, she is exposing this here to show the importance of her culture and introducing her culture’s food to her new country. This is important because she is trying to merge her two identities into one.
Wang’s art gallery resonated with me in a personal level because I am just like her. I am a person that identities themselves with two identities which is Mexican and American that I merged into one. It also resonated with my ideas regarding cultures which are important for people to understand theirs and proudly identifies themselves. Her gallery also resonates with me because I know people in my family who feels like a stranger when they visit their native country of Mexico. They feel this way because they have been living in the United States for many years. Overall, her art gallery shows the importance of an individual’s culture and how they are in between identities.

D4 Artist Conversation- Yichih Wang
C1
Artist: Yichih Wang
Exhibition: in between
Media: Metal, mixed media
Gallery: LBSU School of Art, Werby Gallery
Website: N/A
Instagram: yichih_w
The artist of this gallery is an undergraduate senior who is graduating this semester. Yichih Wang is finishing her BFA degree in the Metal program. Along with using metal to create her work, Wang also uses pottery. The artist’s work is about her being stuck between two worlds that she is from. She was born in Taiwan and later moved to the United States after high school. Wang is too lost between her birthplace and her current life in the U.S to feel like she fits in anywhere and that is what her work explores. When she is not creating art, she enjoys crocheting, painting, making crafts, and likes to make just about anything. She has went from painting to drawing to illustrating and finally to metal because she took a jewelry class with a friend for fun. All her pieces in this exhibit are a collection of work she has done over time, she said that some have taken her only a month and others longer depending on how long her assignment was given. What takes her the longest is her metal pieces because it takes a while to put them together and make them.
C2
Yichih Wang’s art is different colors based on what she is doing. For example her jewelry is silver and on some pieces she uses thin layers of metal and copper to make a flower. The bowls she has are different, one of them is brown and the other ones are gray and green. The brown one is matte compared to the other ones which have a glossy finish. Some of the bowls had jagged parts on the top which made them look broken. In what looked like a flower crown, she used metal to create a circular base and lines that made up shapes around the copper flowers. In general, the colors of the work were not bright colors, they were more earthly. Nothing was too big and all the art was a good size to look at.
C3
Yichih Wang gets her inspiration from both cultures she has grown up with, her East Asian and American cultures. She does not feel like she belongs in either one but rather she is stuck “in between” like her exhibit is called. She uses her art to show both sides of her cultures in one and to stress on how different each one is. In her plate/ dinner collection she puts out different bowls and utensils from her art to show that. With those she also shows that utensils represent a country and cultures because they are all different with how they eat. Another thing she says makes a huge difference between food across cultures is spices and herbs. She said that while chicken maybe cooked the same way, the herbs and spices are what give each culture its taste. Her art reflects her feelings about her education in a way as well. She loves the ocean and sea, so in some of her art she incorporates that. In one of her pieces she had the night sky as seen through windows and that part reflected on her East Asian identity. Another piece had a landscape on it.
C4
I think that I really did relate lot to what the artist was saying about not being tied to one culture it because I was also born somewhere else and move to the United States. I was born in Egypt and moved here when I was six years old so that to me is also a mix of cultures and affects who I am today. At times I feel like when I visit Egypt I don’t always fit in because I don’t have friends there and it’s just my family whereas here I fit in more because both friends and family are here too. To me this exhibit had me missing Egypt and Nile view but at the same time I was not too upset about being not being there because I feel like I am just there to visit when I am there, like living there wouldn’t work out for me. It kind of was good for me to see that there were other people who experienced the same thing I did, especially with her being an artist.

Artist: Yichih Wang
Exhibition: Senior show, In between
Media: Metal, crochet, printmaking
Gallery: Marilyn Werby Gallery
Website: n/a
IG: yichih_w
Yichih Wang is an undergrad student in the School of Art’s metal program pursuing a BFA degree. The ideas that Wang explores in her work is a lot food-related and about her southeast Asian culture. She also likes to implement nature in her pieces. Wang likes to crochet, paint, do printmaking, and all kinds of other crafts. Wang first studied painting and drawing in community college. Then she thought she wasn’t artistic enough so she switched to illustration. When she arrived at CSULB, she started working with metals and decided that’s what she wanted to focus her art in.
All of her pieces look simple yet elegant. They are also very dainty and delicate-looking. Her pieces use earthy colors and tones. The metal is shiny and the wooden pieces are smooth. All of the pieces have an organic and earthy feel to them. There are no neon or vibrant colors, rather there are cool, muted tones. Wang also uses geometry in her pieces, like the belt and necklace. We see triangles and circles that come together to create something nice.
The ideas that I get from her pieces is that she really likes to work with nature to create something beautiful. Metals are found in the Earth and she uses metal for a lot, if not all, her pieces. The colors are muted but so beautiful against the metal or wood. The turquoise of the butterfly complement the cool silver metal very well. A lot of the pieces were centered around food and cutlery. Wang told us that she wanted to showcase food and utensils to represent southeast Asian culture. I could see that with all of the food-related pieces she showcased in her  exhibition. My mom is from Thailand, and I am really close to my Thai culture as well. I cold see from her pieces how southeast Asian culture is represented in her pieces. In Asian culture, nature is important and so is our food. What we use to eat, like chopsticks, represents Asian culture. Wang told us that nature for her is harmony, and I can see that reflected in all of her pieces.
For me, her pieces make me feel calm. The earthy colors and elements work together to create a vibe that makes you feel at ease. For me, I can see my own culture reflected in her pieces. My mother has pieces like this in her own house. Southeast Asian culture puts an importance on nature. Nature is comforting it is the source of all things beautiful. Wang’s pieces are delicate, beautiful, and comforting just like nature.

1.Darwin Perez is currently pursuing  his bachelor of fine arts, specializing in illustration and animation at  Long Beach State School of Art. He was  also born and raised in Los Angeles. His passion for Art-drawing, and animation, started as a child, when he would watch cartoons, and started to draw cartoon characters. His goal as an artist, is to create wonderful art, and make an impact on children.
2. Analyzing Darwin's work the first thing that stood out to me as part of their audience, was the colors that were incorporated in his work. Colors ranged from pastel to dull colors. In addition, his animation art ranged from big to medium art. For one of his art pieces, he first did a sketch without color showing the character “Stephanie Plum” different actions, from there colored her in, which consisted of dark and light colors. In Darwin's work, he makes two art pieces, the same cartoon, and the other four, different themes.
3. Darwins describes his art, being his early childhood memories, when he would watch cartoons as a kid. His passion for drawing animation started as a child, when his mom would put cartoons, and started to draw characters from the cartoons. He describes his art, as a representation of his childhood. When he draws, he loves to “ give characters expression and I love to learn how they were drawn that way.” His goal as an artist, is to make an impact on children, with his dream career as an animator and character design.
4. As part of his audience, when I saw his artwork, it immediately brought childhood memories, when I would watch cartoons. My favorite art two pieces were the first two, which gave me the sense of looking at Dr. Seuss cartoons, and the last one, with the bear and the little girl. Overall, I loved his work, and it made an impact on me.

Artist: Christopher Suarez
Exhibition: Anaheim to Avalon
Media: Ceramics
Gallery: Werby Gallery, CSULB
Instagram: toe_fair
Christopher Suarez is currently a senior at CSULB, who is working towards his Bachelor of Fine Art in ceramics. He is a twenty-four-year-old who enjoys playing sports and doodle. Suarez draws from experiences he had when he was younger. He mainly works in ceramics; he replicates things he sees.
Most of Suarez pieces contain a metallic color which was grey or brown. All his work where all different sizes from small as plates to book sizes and some as big as a person. While looking at his work I see triangles squares, and many other things. Suarez is trying to recreate pieces that remind him of his childhood. Because of his pieces being handmade all his pieces are rough so there is no perfect lines or angles.
Suarez’s work consists from Long Beach to Wilmington, most of his inspirations are from his childhood memories. Also, Chris’s artwork consists of love, family history, and intimacy. Some of his work includes small drawings. In order to complete an art. Piece, it takes Suarez about 5 months to make one.
Overall, I had a good experience looking at his gallery. I felt that the labor work pieces he had was a big part of Mexican culture. His art showed the area and culture from Long beach to Wilmington. I really enjoyed looking at his art, it was very diverse and I kinda felt connected to his art and I was able to see what his story in his work consisted of.

Artist Essay 3
Artist: Chris Suarez
Exhibition: Anaheim to Avalon
Media: Ceramics
Gallery: LBSU School of Art, Marilyn Werby Gallery
Instagram: toe_fair
Chris Suarez is a senior at Cal State Long Beach working towards his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics. Suarez enjoys playing sports and doodling on his free time. His work is mainly in ceramics. He creates replicates of items he sees. Suarez also teaches students at underprivileged schools. He was born and raised in Long Beach and loves to give back to the community. Unfortunately, Chris wasn’t at the gallery, but his friend was there in his place to answer questions.
As stated before, Suarez’s artwork is in ceramics. They range in size. Some of his work are as small as dinner plates, some are the size of a textbook and others almost the size of a person. The pieces have different shapes in them. Looking at his work I can see squares, diamonds, triangles and the list goes on. His work looks like the work of an architect. He doesn’t add much color to his art, he mainly uses black, brown and some white in his art pieces.
Christ creates renditions of objects he has seen around his community. He gets his inspiration from childhood memories of walking from one city to another, mainly from Long Beach to Wilmington. His gallery attempts to reveal the parts of our world that we tend to overlook. Some of his work includes small drawings. These drawings come from the doodles he created during his free time. The work he created nodes to the culture and architectural hard work of the people around his community. Some of his work is place upon a wooden pedestal which he also created. On average, it takes him about 5 months to make one of his art pieces.
I had a great time looking at his gallery. I felt connected to his artwork. I grew up in Wilmington and his artwork is similar to that around Wilmington. Every day I drive down Anaheim and can see the objects similar to those that Chris created. His art really shows the culture and area around Wilmington and Long Beach. These two cities have so much diversity and his art gallery shows that diversity as well.
