I read somewhere that Saitama isn't a gag character, but rather his powers because, him, as an individual, doesn't have the characteristics of a gag character. And that makes me wonder, is OPM still a parody? Because honestly at first I took it as such, but the journey the manga has made until now tells otherwise. It started becoming serious with the Garou arc and since then it has built a pretty solid storyline with actual lore and important arcs instead of random shenanigans like in the beginning. It has explored the value of people's relationships, the struggle to not lose your humanity and how sometimes what you want isn't what you need. And that's deeper than what other "serious" series try to tell.
So I see this topic repeatedly come up a lot, and while sure, the story's enriched by plenty of parodic elements, references, and pointed commentary (and pretty strong ironic/absurdist humor - which is more a signature of ONE's style, as you'll find the same things in mp100 for that matter) opm itself is still a plenty serious story in its own right. :O That I think it's sadder when people are bound by the expectation or misconception that the entire series is a joke, to be completely written off as something frivolous, shallow or episodic without seeing any of its other merits it has to offer. :') But fortunately, it still has that rewarding depth for those who care and choose to look closer past the surface. So I personally treat and enjoy the series as I would any other legitimate work of art/literature - as that's what it is, as something made/intended for fun, comfort, reflection, and altogether as an incredible labor of love.
