Whiskey sour, one of the classic cocktails in history, the name was introduced to me in my final year of college. But I learnt to savour a good whiskey sour after my friend and mixologist, Varun Sudhakar introduced me to it. This is one cocktail enjoyed widespread and very popular. It is a simple a cocktail as you can get, there's obviously a strong spirit, water, sugar, a citrus element. I always figured this drink to be sour, sweet, with a strong punch. The recipe for this cocktail was first seen in 'The Bartender's guide' by Jerry Thomas in 1862, but historians say the sours have existed many decades prior, as these were very popular drinks in naval ships. Professional sailor mainly suffered from scurvy and other sea sicknesses, it was discovered that citrus helped cure such health issues. So sailors started mixing up a few ingredients with their gins, whiskeys and serving the crew, obviously watered down to prevent intoxicating and this was then later bought to shore and eventually developed into Rum Sours and Whisky sours and found its way into the books of Jerry Thomas. This simple classic cocktail has been rediscovered in many ways. Mixologists and bartenders have found ways to explore manipulate with losing that balance, keep the traditions intact yet give it a twist. Whisky sour has had a very interesting journey from those sailors in the ships to the exquisite bars that we now know of. Where do you think this will simple classic cocktail will go next? ...
