Touhou rabbit biology headcanon.

Notes:

- earth and moon rabbits cannot reproduce with each other due to the evolutionary distance. Lunar hares are able to reproduce with earth rabbits, but their genes (dark hair, dark ears, greater muscle mass etc) are extremely recessive.

- earth rabbits are domestic in the sense they have taken a more humanistic way of living as opposed to a wild rabbit living in a den. Earth rabbits are bred for labor, both in the sense to have numerous entities for a task such as manufacturing or war and their telepathic abilities

- Lunar hares have phased out evolutionarily and their number are only in decline. They cannot die to old age, but many perished in both lunar wars and sickness. They’re much more high strung and disciplined than modern rabbits.

- Lunarians worked to phase out these recessive traits of the lunar hairs, because being a fully black rabbit on a pale white moon was not really useful during combat, and while they were more skilled at hand-to-hand and weapons handling, they had little to no magical ability in mass. those that were often made higher ranking positions, and would go on to be drill, sergeants for the new generations of armies.

I have several head canons about moon rabbits that apply here so uh

1. The military starts compulsory training for moon rabbits when they’re like 6. Child soldiers.

2. Over the millions of years on the moon, moon rabbits have grown taller, thinner, paler and more magical. Older “lunar hares” who are like the evolution branch between earth rabbit and moon rabbits, have darker ears, are shorter and more muscled. There are very few left cause of wars and sickness. They’re all old grumpy bastards

3. Rei’sen is like 12 and sucks ass at her training.
