Asuna closed her eyes and concentrated all her power on the air just beyond her skin. This was a psychic method and, as a clarivoyant, it was pretty well suited to her abilities. All the same, her power wasn’t very adaptable and, in her limited experimentation, she hadn’t really been able to control it properly, let alone manipulate it to manifest around her. But, as she saw it, this was pretty much the only way to ensure the safety of her friends at the Village.
Still, trying to summon a demon onto a café rooftop on a Tuesday evening wasn’t exactly top of Asuna’s bucketlist.
More quickly than she expected, the slight tingling of her magic settling into the air and onto her skin faded into the cool weight described in the book she’d stolen from her mothers’ room. Slowly, she opened her eyes.
Her power saturated the air around her in about a six inch radius from her skin, coloring the area with a shimmering deep red color. In a moment of terrifying panic, it dawned on Asuna that she’d absolutely forgotten the rest of the directions that she thought she’d had memorized.
Resigned to mark today down as practice and try again tomorrow, Asuna was just about to pull her magic from the air when suddenly a rather severe looking young woman materialised in front of her.
All gelled-back hair and brown tweed, the woman really looked the part as she snapped.
“I am Her Honor Newark of the Western Grove, a representative sent on behalf of the Council to encroach on recent unsafe and inconsiderate actions and crimes committed by yourself, Princess Asuna of the Light Kingdom and Dark Kingdom. What do you have to say for yourself?”
Stunned into silence, it took Asuna a full five seconds to make a sounds after Newark had completed her speech. Eventually, she spoke, feeling meek but determined to give this rando god prick a hard time.
“I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
To Asuna’s surprise, Newark’s tightly drawn brows softened and, all at once, she deflated and sat on the ground, shiny dress shoes scuffing as she settled.
“Whatever, you’re off the hook.”
“Um.” Asuna had been gearing herself up to fight and whine and bicker and then, if necessary, suck up and plead. She had not, however, prepared herself for the role of comforter. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah no I’m great,” Newark said, gesturing grandly. Had she still been standing, Asuna might’ve believed her - she seemed like the time to earnestly wave her arms with the grandeousity of a flag in the wind. Sitting criss-cross-applesauce and clearly sulking, the act appeared a tad less genuine.
Unprompted, Newark continued, “It’s just, you give up on the easy thing because you want to do something worthwhile that’ll benefit everyone, and then you get stuck at a dead end job and you spend every day believing and hoping and convincing yourself that you’re moving because if you don’t you’ll go crazy. But the truth is you’re not and you’re just gonna be here, doing nothing forever and ever for the rest of time, and you might as well have not bothered opting out of becoming a plantery god because at least planetary gods have control of something, but nooooo you thought you could do better. And guess what? All those planetary gods are out there living their best lives and complaining about other people’s problems and you’re stuck here with a life so unbelievably boring that you think you’ll just die of boredom and at this rate it’d be better if you did because at least then maybe you wouldn’t be bored anymore. Y’know?”
“Whoa.” Asuna’s head was starting to hurt a little. This girl was seriously intense. After hesitating for a moment, she sat down next to Newark. “Never a dull moment with you, huh?”
“What? No. Didn’t you hear what I just said? Every moment’s dull for me.”
Asuna rolled her eyes. “So. You don’t want to be a magical enforcer or whatever in hell you are.”
Newark looked a little scandalised by her decision to swear in the name of hell, but nevertheless she shook her head emphatically. “What gave it away?”
“Then what I’m hearing is that you don’t actually care if I summon a demon,” Asuna ventured.
“Well... ” Newark’s face twisted for a moment into one of intense conflict. Almost as quickly as the expression came, it vanished. “Officially speaking, of course, it is of utmost importance that you don’t summon a demon, because they’re dangerous and will probably kill you and anyone in the vicinity. Not to mention once they’re locked into a contract, it’s impossible for anyone, including the Council, to forcibly remove them. Personally speaking, however, I have no investment in your choice one way or another.”
Asuna chuckled and got to her feet. “Perfect! I’ll get back to work then, Your Honor Newark of the Northern Grove.”
“Western Grove. There’s no such thing as the Northern Grove. It’s called the Northern Stretch,” Newark said as she stood, back in her scathing tone. Asuna rolled her eyes. “I, too, will return to my work.”
With that, the young god vanished and Asuna was left alone on the roof once again.
