Chapter 2: Falling Flora
Narrated by Yexiao.
Narrator: Since when did I make observing falling petals a habit?
Narrator: Uh-huh...
Narrator: It probably started that one day when a petal landed on my bangs.
Narrator: It was a quiet spring day before the chicks came. The old lady was having tea in her rocking chair under the loquat tree.
Narrator: The gentle breeze caressed my cheeks, bringing with it warm, golden sunlight.
Narrator: Did you see that petal?
Choose either "Where?" or "I see it!"
If "where," ...
You: Petal? Where?
Narrator: Over there. Under the sun.
If "yes," ...
You: Yeah, I saw!
Narrator: Isn't it beautiful?
--
Narrator: It's twirling, spinning, trying to stay afloat as long as possible, to catch as many sights as it can with its curious eyes.
Narrator: On an especially bright day, the shadows of drifting petals on the ground would look like that of fluttering butterflies.
Narrator: On a day with strong gusts, the petals would ride the wind and travel far, far away. Past tall peaks, wide rivers...
Narrator: Past bustling cities with twinkling lights, past soulmates who have yet to meet, past lovers who are now apart...
Narrator: The petals will gradually part ways and land in different locations, finally becoming one with the soil.
Narrator: When it's rainy, the petals become unusually heavy and their travels will be short-lived.
Narrator: But a petal can't choose when it falls on a sunny day or a rainy one.
Narrator: All it can do is tremble weakly, fighting to hang on in the falling rain.
Narrator: I considered catching some falling petals with an umbrella, drying them and making them into bookmarks. I never did, though.
Narrator: I'd watch the petals land in puddles and spin round and round on the surface, like tiny boats caught in a storm.
Narrator: Of course, petals can land in lots of other spots, too.
Narrator: For example...
Choose either "On the park bench" or "In shallow ponds."
If "bench," ...
You: On park benches.
If "ponds," ...
You: In shallow ponds.
--
Narrator: And on the fluffy back of a kitten.
Narrator: The kitten can't see it that way, so it'd start running in circles seeking the petal.
Narrator: And it might land inside another flower.
Narrator: And in a flowing stream.
Narrator: And on my forehead.
Narrator: And in your palm.
Narrator: Petals falling from the same starting point will all land in different finishing points.
