7 Maternity Wardrobe Considerations Working Moms-To-Be Need To Know
Tumblr media
Pregnancy is a difficult period, especially when you are an independent working mom-to-be; you will be on edge. Filled with a dozen emotions, the least you should be worried about is your maternity clothing. For some, it is time to quit wearing their choice of clothes, while for some, it is an opportunity to fill their wardrobe with beautiful other dresses.
There are tons of maternity dresses available on the marketplace; however, what should be your concern before making a purchase as a working woman? There are a few aspects that you need to consider that'll ease your pregnancy trimesters.
● Pick Up Clothes That Fits Your Trimesters: It is crucial to consider only those dresses that fit your every trimester. Try to shop at the time when your bump is ready to grow or is already increasing, and shop for each trimester individually. There are a few dresses that you can consider for utmost comfort and style throughout the pregnancy period, like empire waist dresses, maternity pants, long-line trench coats, button-down tops, accessories, etc. However, with change in the time, you will need clothes of different sizes, shapes, and patterns.
● Do Not Buy Clothes In Advance: It is the most recommended aspect to consider while making up your mind to fill your wardrobe with new maternity clothes. You would never know how your bump will grow in the next trimesters or subsequent months. According to your body, it may grow to a small proportion or grow a lot. Thus, do not hoard on to buy all your maternity wear in one go. Purchase clothes only as and when you need them, as also seasons, tastes, and preferences can also change.
● Think Beyond Pregnancy: Always think about the post-pregnancy period and how your recent purchase could help you later. You don't need to stock up on clothes primarily for pregnancy; always consider buying dresses you can also wear post-baby. Some of the best pregnancy and post-baby dresses are wide-leg jumpsuits, empire waist dresses, button-down tops, nursing wraps, etc.
● Consider Comfort Over Anything: You are working, managing different life aspects, and carrying your little mate; comfort should be your first priority whether you buy undergarments, maternity dresses, accessories, footwear, etc. Unlike regular dresses, maternity clothing is made of stretchy fabric and extra details that keep you flutter and comfortable. Make sure the product you buy has a breathable fabric that keeps you feeling fresh and comfortable all day long. It is best to avoid figure-hugging and too-tight clothing.
● Emphasis on Size, Fabric, Material, and Seasons: Maternity wear is available in a variety of fabrics and materials like polyester, cotton, satin, and synthetic, which gives utmost relaxation and comfort while working. Similarly, it goes for size and seasons; like when your bump is growing, you would require a larger size undergarments as compared to your previous undergarments. Look for the ones that satisfy you the most and work well with all the seasons.
● Accessorize Well: Accessories can add stars to your look. You do not only require dresses and footwear to look chic when accessories can make you glamorous. Accessories like beads, scarfs, bags, watches, belts, stoles, shawls, etc., can give your wardrobe and you an irresistible look. For example, you can wrap a belt below your bump on a wide-leg jumpsuit and accessorize it with sneakers and minimal jewelry like a tiny necklace and a classic watch.
● Maternity Clothes Swap: This one would be the most accessible consideration of all. You can set up a maternity wear clothes swap event and swap clothes with those women who have previously been pregnant. This will also give you an idea of what all suits you and if you want to shop for yourselves, you can do that too!
Conclusion
Entering the pregnancy does not only mean you would have to wear oversized or baggy clothes; instead, clothes now can fit you well and at the same time comfort you. It is always recommended to avoid putting on baggy or oversized clothes as they will be ill-fitting and not near comfortable, supportive, and stylish.

Trent Alexander Arnold - you deserve the world and more
Warnings: some sexual innuendos, teasing, overall birthday fluffiness
a/n: so i got a request for Trent but i don't actually know him that well? anyway watched some videos, thought his accent was cute and i don't mind the request either way so... here we are :p sorry it took a bit longer, i was quite busy with school unfortunately :(
"HAP-"
"Don't even start Trent, I will break up with you." You sat up against the headboard of your bed, a pointed finger raised toward his figure as he entered your bedroom, although it did nothing to add any significance to the empty threat.
He pouted as you interrupted his attempt at singing happy birthday to you. Granted it was early in the morning and his terrible singing was probably not the best thing to wake up to, he still figured you'd deserve some love on your birthday. Besides, he loved when you'd get all embarrassed at his antics, especially if your cheeks flushed and that shy smile played on your lips. He simply thought you were adorable.
"Please? I made a crazy remix just for you." He pleaded with you, but your glare - albeit playful - told him not to push it.
"Alright well, you'll hear it next year then." He joked as he sat down on the edge of the bed, propping himself up on his elbows before nodding his head at you. "Get dressed, baby, we got a lot to do today."
"Do we, now?" Your tone was teasing, but really you were curious as to what he had planned. It was Trent after all - the boy always planned everything to perfection.
"Didn't think I didn't have anything planned for your birthday, did you?" He raised his eyebrows at you, a smirk playing on his lips.
You only hummed amusedly in response as you got out of bed. It wasn't entirely uncommon for him to sit and wait on your bed while you got ready; he'd been round yours countless of times and knew his way around, being perfectly capable of entertaining himself while you showered and did your hair and make up. It was no surprise that when you were done and walked back into your room, he was sprawled out on your bed, watching summaries of last night's football matches.
Still, his eyes were on you as soon as you walked in in only your underwear. "Dang girl, I thought it was your birthday but this sure is a present for me." He flirted as his eyes wandered over your body. The comment earned him a roll of your eyes as you continued your way to your wardrobe, but the blush that adorned your cheeks gave away the impact that it had on you. Surely, you'd have to be used to it by now, but all his flirty remarks and admiring gazes still made butterfly erupt in your stomach.
"It's nothing too fancy, just wear something you're comfortable in." He said as he noticed you weighing your clothing options.
"How comfortable are we talking here?" You pondered out loud as you ran your hand across some shirts, trying to pick one.
"Well, not sweatpants-comfortable."
You let out a laugh at that. He knew you all too well, and if you could, you'd spend the whole day in your sweats. Instead, you opted for a white turtleneck with a black slip-on dress. It was comfortable yet cute, and matched perfectly with your doc martens. It was coincidentally also one of Trent's favourite outfits of yours.
"Dang! You tryna impress me here?" Trent hollered as soon as he saw the outfit you'd put on, immediately shutting off the tv and walking up to you.
"Depends. Is it working?" You asked as you teasingly smiled up at him, wrapping your arms around his neck.
"Perhaps." He fiddled with the straps of your dress, twisting them beneath his fingers as he avoided making eye contact with you. The blush on his cheeks betrayed him though; you had as much of an effect on him as he did on you, even after dating for so long.
it was evident too, when you drove to wherever he was taking you, his hand firmly on your thigh the whole time.
"Alright, we're here. I know what you're thinking: 'Trent, we're at the park', but it's gonna be fun, I promise." He said as soon as he parked the car.
You only held your hands up in defense as both of you got out, Trent walking over to your side immediately. The piece of cloth in his hands made you look warily at him, which he took quick notice of.
"I just wanna keep this a surprise, okay? I need to get some things from the trunk and I don't want you to see just yet. Please can I put the blindfold on?"
And if it wasn't for his stupid puppy eyes and perfect smile you would've said no. But alas, here we are, as you reluctantly let him blindfold you. You could only peak down and see the toes of your shoes, but the rest was total darkness as you relied on your sense of hearing to know that Trent was rummaging in the back of his car. Then, your sense of touch took over as Trent's hand appeared in yours, guiding you for a small walk before telling you to wait on the spot as you once again heard him rummaging around.
"You know, in any other situation this blindfold might've been fun, but I'd really like to take it off now." You hummed. Patience was never one of your virtues. And although you couldn't see Trent, the sound of his choked out breath at your innuendo made you bite back a cheeky smile.
"It's done, you can take it off."
And you did. Your eyes needed some time to adjust to the bright sun, but once they did, a gasp fell from your mouth. He stood before you with a bouquet of your favourite flowers, a picnic blanket spread out on the grass with various items laid on it. A quick glance made you realise how much thought he put into this: there were chocolate covered strawberries, grapes, some of your favourite snacks and a bottle of wine to share. He even brought a speaker so you could listen to music. The scene in front of you looked like it came straight out of a movie.
"Trent, this- this is just- I mean, wow." You stuttered out.
"Let's just enjoy ourselves, yeah? You wanna start with the strawberries?" He asked with a proud smile on his face, before gently kissing your cheek as you were still completely awestruck.
And so the rest of the day was spent sitting at that little spot in the park. You'd fed each other strawberries, giggling as Trent got chocolate on his chin, eating all your favourite snacks and reminiscing on the past year. The whole time he's just sitting there, admiring you and everything you've achieved this year, telling you time and time again how proud he is of you. It's a day well spent, and as the cold evening breeze picks up, you're moving closer to him, resting your head on his shoulder. His hand comes down on your thigh, then, just beneath the hem of your dress. He'd momentarily slip his pinky finger an inch or so underneath it, rubbing gentle circles on the now exposed skin.
"This has been amazing, Trent. Really, I appreciate it so much. just goes to show I picked the right guy, don't it?" You're giggling as you look up at him, but the confession is as genuine as it gets.
"You deserve it, baby." He whispers as he looks down into your eyes. And it's true. The whole world knows how much you deserve it. All you can do is smile brightly.
"God, I love you so much." You confess in a rushed whisper.
He doesn't even have time to respond that he loves you more before your lips are already on his, kissing him passionately to emphasise the truth in your previous statement. He kisses back with just as much intensity, his hands holding your face as he smiles in the kiss. It doesn't take long before his tongue slips in your mouth, slowly and teasingly, and you can only press yourself further into him as a response to his actions.
As much as he wants to continue, give you exactly what you want, he's awfully aware that you're both still in public. He also has another surprise for you. So he reluctantly breaks the kiss, much to your dismay.
"I- uhh. I actually have something else for you." He admits as he starts going through the basket, taking out a small box.
"Trent, really, this is too much."
"Open it baby." He says as he hands you the box. Your hand reaches up to cover your mouth as you gasp loudly, looking up at him in disbelief as soon as you open it and see what's inside.
"No way. Is this-?" You can't even form a proper sentence.
"Your birthstone and mine, yeah. I heard you talk about how much you liked the idea of them, so I thought this would be really cool. And it would look really good on you."
His confession makes you well up slightly as you roam over the necklace. It's delicate and dainty, the two birthstones sitting right beside each other in a beautiful pendant. It's absolutely mesmerising to look at, and it's the perfect gift to top off a perfect day.
"Do you want me to put it on for you?" He's whispering as he kisses your forehead, and he can feel you nod against his lips.
You turn around so he's got access to your neck. It's convenient because he won't notice the tears that silently fall from your eyes. This would go down as your best birthday ever, and it's all because of him. You couldn't have wished for anything more in life than to be by his side, and you're hoping the rest of your future together will have you feeling this pure happiness, forever. You're having to look up at the sky to stop the tears from overflowing even more.
He's careful as he puts the necklace on, brushing your hair aside, fingertips grazing over the warm skin beneath your ear as he does, rubbing your arms once he's done, signalling for you to turn back around. He kisses your shoulder before resting his chin on it as he realises you're not ready to face him yet, quickly trying to wipe away any stray tears as you try and compose yourself.
"It's okay, you don't have to hide from me baby. You deserve the world and more, you know that." He's smiling gently as he whispers from his position behind you, his arms wrapping around you too as he gently sways you from side to side.
"I'm just- this is just so nice. Everything you've done for me." Your voice is strained, and it sounds like you're holding in a sob at his kind words.
"I love you." He's whipsering as his lips find their way to your shoulder, and your neck, and cheek, peppering them in tender kisses to bring your wonderful smile back on your lips. Your head leans to his, indicating that you're okay again, saying the three words back to him once more. He's letting you go then, just so you can turn around and look him in the eyes again. He's grinning, and the mischievous glint in his eyes makes you look at him skeptically.
"Actually, I have another surprise for you."
"Babe I don't think I can take another surprise."
"You're gonna like this one, though." He's full on smirking now, and you call out his name in warning.
"Yeah, it's gonna take all night long." Your mouth falls open in shock at his vulgar comment, groaning out a quiet 'oh my god' as you slap his chest, while he's full on giggling as he falls back on the blanket.
That one comment is all it takes for you to fall back into your usual joking, teasing routine. And it's all you could ever ask for.
He is all you could ever ask for, and so much more, too.

How to...Live a Stylish life with Sarah Kelly.
Tumblr media
Sarah Kelly is the epitome of style. She is a wife, a mother of three, a philanthropist, a part-time fashion emcee and the ultimate fashion lover. The first thing you notice about Sarah is her hair (perfectly styled and big), then you’ll see her polished outfit, her charming personality and then her quick wit. Spend five minutes with Sarah and you will instantly feel like you’ve been transported into the most fabulous situation, with champagne and lots of belly laughing. The dedication to a life of style is something that Sarah pulls of seamlessly. We sat down with our friend Sarah to get the low-down on how to live a Stylish Life.
Tumblr media
Northbourne Greene: Who are your style icons?
Sarah: Diana Vreeland, Coco Chanel, Iris Apfel, Giovanna Engelbert, Yasmin Sewell, Miroslava Duma,  Olivia Palermo and Pip Edwards.
N: Is there a fashion moment in time that you can't get over?
Sarah: The 60s! Everything about it. The clothes, the big hair, the home interiors, it is by far my favourite era. Elegant, classic, fun, yet timeless. What is not to love? Pour me another martini...
Tumblr media
N: Let's talk about brands - what are your go to's?
Sarah: I think every girl has a check list of brands in her head. Ones she would wear if she could afford them – for me that is Chanel, Fendi, Gucci, Prada, Givenchy and Valentino (not to say I don’t spoil myself with a few accessories from these!)
The next on the list is a brand she loves and has managed to secure one or two very special pieces.  These designers for me are Christopher Kane, J W Anderson, Mary Katrantzou, Roksanda Ilincic, Ellery and Romance Was Born.
The next brand names are the more accessible brands that become her go-to. These are the runway trends re-interpreted for a more street-wear brand. Think Zara, Camilla and Marc, Sass and Bide, P E Nation, Zimmerman and Asilio. I am a big advocate for supporting Australian brands and we have such an incredible selection of creatives in Australia. Currently wearing ALL of the above!
N: How many pairs of shoes are sitting in your wardrobe?
Sarah: Are you kidding? Who counts them? I actually cannot say but there are A LOT...
Tumblr media
N: Favourite runway from previous fashion weeks?
Sarah: Oh gosh, there are too many to mention!  Chanel’s Haute Couture Spring Summer 17 show in Paris made me weep! The most recent NY/London/Paris collections were astounding as they were just so colourful and adventurous and really played on the idea of fashion being bold and adventurous. Think Moschino, Prada, Gucci, Mary Katrantzou, Maison Margiela, and a new designer I have fallen in love with out of London, Richard Malone. Then there was the heart-stopping moment of John Galliano for Maison Margiela featuring Canberra artist, Benjamin Shine’s sculpted tulle on a coat!  What a moment!!!
N: You and Bill Cunningham had a very interesting friendship, how did that start?
Tumblr media
Sarah: As strange as it sounds, through Instagram! You hear over and over again about “the power” of social media.  But it is a great connector of people.  And this is how that special relationship began. I was posting images of Bill Cunningham and his fashion quotes and philosophy on fashion on instagram and his assistant, right hand man and friend, John Kurdewan, picked up on these and started to comment. I thought that he could not possibly be the actual person, but alas he was. We started chatting and he told me of how he always admired Elle McPherson and had a soft spot for Australians in general.  It began as a joke between us that then turned into a reality. If he gave me Bill, I would give him Elle.
Needless to say he is on first name terms with the beautiful Elle, she signed a photograph and sent it to him and promises to visit the New York Times building on her next visit to NY. She was very fond of Bill. So, as the story goes, I was invited to go to New York for fashion week in September 2014 and meet Bill and attended a special interview with him as a guest of 92Y. Thus began the incredible friendship with Bill Cunningham. He was and is a true visionary with regards to fashion. I visited the New York Times every day – his office became my office, we became friends and he loved that I just loved fashion and had no other agenda of wanting to be in his presence – just to witness the work of this warm and talented man was all I wanted. I witnessed a plethora of street style and runway photos that he gave me access to and we talked of fashion through the ages, current designers and of course, his favourite subject – street style fashion. When he met me he stated “I’ve just come off the street and saw nothing. If I had of seen you kid, I would have chased you down!” He loved the Alexander Wang dress I was wearing and photographed me within the office of the New York Times and the photo made it onto his Street Style page that Sunday.
I was invited back for NYFW again in 2015, this time with Bill giving me his tickets to numerous shows. He preferred not to sit down (even with his ailing health) and so insisted I take his seat. This was the most surreal experience – witnessing Diane Von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Rodarte, Alexander Wang, Oscar de la Renta and Givenchy. Sitting front row along-side the likes of Anna Wintour.  Those that love fashion will understand, I was given THE most incredible opportunity to be in that dream for a moment and I will be forever grateful to Bill and John Kurdewan for making that happen in my life. It is too painful to reflect on his passing, but I am assisting in writing a book with John Kurdewan to keep Bill alive for many for years to come.
Tumblr media
N: Tips for living a fabulous life?
Sarah: Seek beauty in all things – people, nature and fashion. It’s been said many times, but yes, life is too short to wear boring clothes!  Feeling fabulous is being fabulous.  Do what you love, wear what you love and be bold and stay true to who you are and your own sense of style. Never apologise, never compromise for who you are and how you look.  Make an effort to feel the best you can each and every day.  It has an effect on you but also on everyone you encounter.
Tumblr media
N: Stylish holiday spots?
Sarah: Beach = Greek Islands (Santorini) and the South Coast of Australia (Potato Point).
City = New York, New York, New York, New York.  Did I say New York?

Keeping cats indoors: How to ensure your pet is happy, according to science
If allowed, cats will hunt outdoors. But their freedom comes at a cost to wildlife. Credit: HildeAnna/Shutterstock
By 2030, 60 percent of the world’s population will live in cities, while one in three will share their city with at least half a million other inhabitants. With more and more people living in dense urban settings, what does the future hold for pets?
High-rise living might not be ideal for most pets, as outdoor access can be difficult and there may be limited space indoors. For cats in particular, a trend towards indoor lifestyles might restrict how much they’re able to behave normally.
As the domesticated descendants of the African wild cat, cats are obligate carnivores—they need to have a meat-based diet. Naturally, this requires them to hunt. A study in the US found that pet cats could be killing up to four billion birds and up to 21 billion mammals every year.
So housebound cats may be good for wildlife, but how can people ensure their pets thrive indoors? Sadly, scientific research is pretty light on this question. Despite so many of us inviting them into our homes, we know relatively little about how cats handle living inside.
Choosing the right cat
We know that some cats are more suited to being house cats than others, although we need to be careful not to generalize. All cats have individual needs, personalities and preferences. High energy and hyperactive cats, rescued strays with little indoor experience or those that aren’t very friendly towards people aren’t good choices for a life lived entirely indoors.
It’s often assumed that older cats may be a better choice because they’re more sedentary and cats with a previous history of living indoors may also adjust more easily to a new indoor home. Some cats have diseases, such as feline immunodeficiency virus, that keep them housebound. But this doesn’t mean these groups of cats will all have the right temperament to cope with indoor living.
House cats are prone to obesity and may spend large amounts of time inactive, both physically and mentally. Providing a safe outdoor space for cats could be beneficial for their wellbeing. Cat proofing gardens, for example, so they can’t escape, could ensure pets can benefit from the outdoors in a more controlled way. But if this isn’t possible, there’s still much that can be done to improve a cat’s life indoors.
Toys can help simulate the hunting experience for cats in the home. Credit: WaitForLight/Shutterstock
Personal space
Because cats are only considered semi-social, indoor environments may present several situations that they would usually choose to avoid. This can be anything from too much attention and unexpected guests to toddlers and other animals that don’t understand the concept of mutual respect and personal space.
We know cats like boxes, but you can also give them high vantage points to climb to. To do this, you can use a “cat tree,” although an accessible shelf or the top of a wardrobe would work well too. Cats also need access to quiet rooms and spaces to hide under so they can remove themselves from situations they find stressful. Be mindful though—if your cat spends most of its time hiding, your house may be less cat-friendly than you think. Uncontrolled stress in a cat’s life can lead to illnesses such as idiopathic cystitis.
Predatory behavior
But what about their need to hunt? Allowing this behavior is vital, and that includes them being able to look for food as well as finding and eating it. Searching for food usually involves short bursts of activity and long periods of waiting in cats, while the feeding part is also complex, as the cat decides how and where is best to eat.
To recreate this, you can scatter food on the floor or hide it in puzzle feeders. You can even vary where you feed your cat and encourage it to explore and manipulate objects. Getting a cat to move more and eat regular, smaller amounts of food can help reduce the risk of obesity.
Play can also be used to mimic hunting without the need for food. It’s always best to keep bouts of play short, encouraging pouncing and chasing, and using toys which mimic the shape, texture and movement of live prey. You should always end on a positive note and while the cat is enjoying itself, so that future playtimes will be anticipated rather than endured.
Brushing up
Like humans, cats like to maintain themselves. Sharp claws are a must for effective climbing and defense, so make sure to provide scratching posts, especially if you want to protect your furniture. In the wild, cats use trees and other objects, not just to maintain their claws but also to leave marks for other cats to follow.
Make sure your cat can comfortably go to the toilet. Use unscented litter that is changed regularly and put the toilet in a discreet place, away from their food and water. For cats, as for us, it’s not a public activity. If your cat is going to the toilet somewhere inappropriate, it may be that they’re unhappy with their toilet arrangements or they may need to be checked by a vet.
Cats are as complex and each individual has unique needs. Before you decide whether to have an indoor cat, make sure that it’s a decision the cat would be likely to make too.

Ready Player One, p.2
I’ve written an essay to expand on my previous blog in order to discuss some of the points that I was unable to in my initial post. I hope you enjoy!  I’ll be including a link to the PDF of the full essay, including a MLA8 bibliography, in my next post, but to prevent any accessibility issues, I’ve posted it below as well.
Ready Player One was published by Ernest Cline in 2011 amidst the emergence of virtual reality as a new gaming platform. The book was adapted into a movie, with mass commercial success, in later years, and has become a cult favorite amongst gamers and fans of pop culture. Despite it’s success, the book reflects many of the problems inherent in gaming culture and has an extremely problematic protagonist. The book was drastically different from the movie, primarily in it’s depiction of the protagonist, Wade Watts, also known by his online username, Parzival. Ready Player One is set in a dystopian future where climate change, a lack of natural resources, worldwide war, and various other disasters have driven humanity to primarily dwell in an online, virtual reality space known fittingly as the OASIS (Cline, 2).
Created by game developer James Halliday, the OASIS is the heart of this new modern society. Commerce, employment, education, and entertainment are all based in this virtual world (Cline, 21). Users utilize haptic clothing that’s able to translate physical sensation to their real body in order to fully immerse themselves in this VR universe (Cline, 38). Upon Halliday’s death, the release of his will revealed an Easter Egg challenge (Cline, 2), wherein users must discover hidden gems within the OASIS and solve complicated riddles. The first to solve all the riddles and claim the final Easter Egg would claim ownership over the entire OASIS, essentially controlling the economy, education, and entertainment of all of humanity as well as claiming 240 billion dollars that Halliday left behind (Cline, 8).
Naturally, a frenzy to claim this fortune ensued, with millions of self described “gunters” (egg-hunters) searching for the elusive Easter Egg. One corporation, IOI, dedicated an entire department to the Hunt, with the goal of claiming the OASIS and creating an ultra-capitalistic online society. “They would charge a monthly fee for access to the simulation. They would plaster advertisements on every visible surface. User anonymity and free speech would become things of the past. […] the OASIS would cease to be the open-source virtual utopia [Wade had] grown up in. It would become a corporate-run dystopia, an overpriced theme park for wealthy elites” (Cline, 50). Employees of IOI become known as Sixers, due to the fact that each of their avatar names begins with a 6 (Cline, 51). Wade holds a particular disdain towards these individuals, believing that the corporation they work for is corrupt, even going so far as to describe “joining the sixers […] a lot like joining the military” (Cline, 51).
Wade’s quest to save the OASIS from the clutches of IOI is one of epic proportion, which is reflected in his choice of username- Parzival. Parzival stems from the Arthurian legend of the Holy Grail, wherein one of King Arthur’s round table knights, Percival, is the only knight pure of heart enough to claim the Grail for Arthur. This speaks volumes about Wade’s perception of himself. In reality, Wade is far from noble or pure of heart, and is the last individual one might consider to be chivalrous. In the real world, Wade is “a painfully shy, awkward kid, with low self-esteem and almost no social skills” (Cline 45). Face to face interaction makes him an anxious mess, and he has no confidence in his ability to hold a conversation with another person in reality.
His appearance, he believes, is a primary source of the problem. He is overweight, partially due to his working class origin and “bankrupt diet of government subsidized sugar-and-starch-laden food” (Cline 46), but primarily due to the fact that he is a self-described OASIS addict, “so the only exercise [he] usually got […] was from running away from bullies” (Cline 46). Once Wade enrolled in OASIS based schooling, even that bit of exercise was taken from him, and the only physical activity he is able to get is from going to and from the hideout where he keeps his VR equipment. Wade believes that his financial position contributes to his social ostracization as well, with his “limited wardrobe consisted entirely of ill-fitting clothes from thrift stores and donation bins- the social equivalent of having a bulls-eye painted on [his] forehead” (Cline 46).
In all actuality, the majority of Wade’s social issues stem from a need to overcompensate for his insecurities, which is evident by his constant need to one-up his peers with his 80’s knowledge and gaming skills. That knowledge and skill set are Wade’s sole redeeming attributes, but he tends to shove them in the faces of his peers, which ultimately just further contributes to his ostracization. In his interactions with his friend Aech and bully I-r0k, he repeatedly feels the need to show off and call others who choose to spend their time following other, non-Hunt related pursuits posers (Cline, 67). He invalidates anyone he feels threatened by, and even seems to flip the script on his bullies by taking things too far and humiliating them publicly in front of their friends and peers, even questioning their intelligence and posing questions that he knows full well that only he knows the answer to (Cline, 68).
When Wade defeats I-r0k in their informal trivia competition, the “crowd burst into applause”- a common trope in falsified stories told by individuals on social media seeking praise from their peers. It seems inevitable that an individual with these behavioral patterns would be excluded by their peers, considering that Wade’s hubris and holier-than-thou attitude are generally considered to be character flaws by the majority of people. His self-perception is simultaneously that of an inflated ego and insecure child, which can be seen in how he designs his avatar.
Despite stating that he designed his “avatar’s face and body to look, more or less, like [his] own,” (Cline 41) Wade also states that his avatar “had a slightly smaller nose than [him], and he was taller. And thinner. And more muscular. And he didn’t have any teenage acne. But aside from those minor details, [they] looked more or less identical” (Cline 41). The changes Wade describes, if made in reality, would require extensive plastic surgery, weight loss programs, an extensive and consistent workout plan, and either medication or laser treatment. Those are not minor details. Those are the sort of modifications that drastically change one’s appearance- a full make-over, more extensive even than most movie makeovers. Wade’s perception of himself is so distorted that he considers these modifications to be inconsequential, while in reality, they would likely make him unrecognizable to any of his peers that he may run into in reality.
Wade is a problematic protagonist. Examining Ready Player One as a reflection of the under-addressed culture of sexism, ego, and toxic competitivity in gaming and nerd culture as a whole reveals disturbing conclusions about that world. Wade’s relationship with Art3mis, for example, is genuinely terrifying to female readers, as it reflects many of their own toxic experiences with male gamers in a glorified, normalized and romanticized light. Wade has a longstanding history of putting women up on pedestals and assigning almost mythic qualities to them in a way that’s dehumanizing and invalidating as well as toxically unrealistic.
In real life, he doesn’t even consider himself worthy of speaking to a woman. To him, “they were like some exotic alien species, both beautiful and terrifying. Whenever [he] got near one of them, [he] invariably broke out in a cold sweat and lost the ability to speak in complete sentences” (Cline 46). This is an extremely toxic and dangerous way of thinking, and is unfortunately common in modern society. Women are constantly held to unrealistic standards, portrayed almost as a form of deity right up until the moment that they no longer fit the description assigned to them, at which point the illusion shatters and they’re often rejected. In his interactions with Art3mis, this toxic ideal is reflected constantly in his descriptions of her appearance, personality, and their dialogue.
Before meeting Art3mis, Wade had stalked her blog for over three years, rabidly consuming every bit of content that she had posted. He became the worst kind of fanboy, even going so far as to obsessively save every single screenshot she posted of her avatar to his hard drive, most likely for masturbatory purposes (Cline 53). This behavior alone is a major red flag. He describes her avatar’s appearance in a manner that indicates a distinct disconnect from reality, idolizing Art3mis’s attractiveness because it “had the distinctive look of a real person’s, as if her true features had been scanned in and mapped onto her avatar” (Cline 53). She was beautiful, but she wasn’t perfect in the unnatural manner that many other OASIS avatars are, which means that she’s less threatening to Wade.
Wade is clearly intimidated by beauty, most likely due to his own insecurities, and Art3mis’s realistic (by Wade’s standards, and it’s important to remember here that his interactions with women in reality are limited) look is able to allow him to feel attracted to her without feeling like she’s better than him, which satisfies his inferiority complex. Wade describes her body as atypical as well, noting that the majority of female avatars choose from one of two body shapes- “the absurdly thin yet wildly popular supermodel frame, or the top-heavy, wasp wasted porn starlet physique” (Cline 54). The fact that he relates both of these body types to industries where women are exploited for and reduced to their physical appearance is telling to Wade’s view of women.
His description of Art3mis, however, still describes an unrealistic beauty standard. “Big hazel eyes, rounded cheekbones, a pointy chin, and a perpetual smirk. […] Art3mis’s frame was short and Ruben-esque. All curves” (Cline 53-54). When describing her armor, he uses sexual imagery to evoke a sensual mental picture of her, describing the pistols as “slung low on her hips” (Cline 137), and her melee weapon as a “long, curved elvish sword” (Cline 137-138), even reducing her entire image to “in a word: hot” (Cline 138). Later, when considering facing her in combat, he merely describes this as he would any male gamer’s armor- “Body armor. Body pistols. And that elvish sword she was carrying might be vorpal” (Cline 140), in distinct contrast to his initial description, which confirms that he was viewing her as a woman first and a gamer second, which invalidates her entire character.
Art3mis as a character exists solely to reinforce Wade’s ego and to be the secondary “prize” to winning the Hunt, as the protagonist inevitably gets the girl of his dreams after successfully claiming the final Egg. Wade repeatedly describes her writing style as self-deprecating, rambling, and assumes that her posts are full of misinformation, despite never mentioning any evidence to support that (Cline 53). It’s necessary for Art3mis to be self-deprecating, because this ensures that she lacks the confidence to be any real threat to Wade’s success. Her rambling, mentioned repeatedly in almost every description and interaction with her, is a reflection of the stereotype that women talk too much and makes her socially awkward enough to be Wade’s peer. It allows her to maintain her celebrity status while still being accessible to someone as socially incompetent as Wade, which is vital to their romance. Wade needs a Player Two, not a Player One, and Art3mis’s personality is a convenient way to ensure her role as his secondary once their relationship develops. This is a deliberate authorial choice, intentionally made to allow for the protagonist to “get the girl” at the end, despite him stalking her online for three years before they even met.
Known today as “stan culture”, stan is a shortened abbreviation of the term “stalker-fan”. It originated in 2000 when the rapper Eminem released a song entitled “Stan”, about a fan who becomes alarmingly obsessed with the rapper and eventually comes unhinged and violent when his fan letters went unanswered, according to Lauren Miller in her article about the psychology of stan culture (Miller, 2018). Kaitlyn Williams, a graduate of Stanford University, in an award-winning essay detailing videogame harassment towards female gamers, details some of the horrific experiences some female gamers commonly have. In the world of gaming, female gamers are frequently stalked online and harassed, even receiving multitudes of messages threatening murder, rape, and violence, among other threats and abusive comments (Williams, 72).
Wade’s obsession would most likely be alarming, in Art3mis’ eyes, even frightening. Her behavior is unrealistic and indulgent to the author’s own fantasies, and her lack of reaction to the multitude of red-flag behaviors Wade displays in her presence is telling to the Cline’s own lack of understanding of women and female gamers in particular. In addition, the invalidating nature of the author’s description of her skills speaks volumes to both Wade’s and his own inferiority complexes. In the Tomb of Horrors, where the first challenge of the Hunt takes place, Art3mis is unable to defeat the enemy after five weeks of grinding, yet Wade manages to succeed on his first try. In everything Art3mis does, she’s the best of the best, but always seems to come second to Wade, despite his own apparent lack of skills (Cline 149). This is because of her function as Wade’s Player Two. She has to be the best, so that his skills look that much more impressive when compared to hers.
Ready Player One is a cultural classic, one which predicts the advancement of virtual reality technology and the downfall of human civilization with startling clarity, but it is also reflective of many of the problems currently facing the industry. Rampant sexism, egos reinforced by valueless skills, and unrealistic views of others are all issues that the gaming industry is currently experiencing. The author, Ernest Cline, is far from exempt from these issues, and the evidence is clear in his depictions of his characters and online romance. Cline himself is a victim of that disconnect from reality that Wade experiences, and much of the book seems like a self-indulgent fantasy meant to fulfill a savior complex. The sense of entitlement that Wade feels for Halliday’s fortune likely reflects Cline’s own sense of entitlement to recognition and fame. Wade’s relationship with Art3mis is unbalanced, toxic, and dangerous, yet he still manages to win her over in the end, because she’s his Player Two. As virtual reality continues to develop and gaming becomes increasingly popular, many of these issues are coming to light in the media, with massive controversy as to how they should be handled. Moving forward, it is important to consider these implications while developing new games and platforms.

“…as sharp cut as a diamond and as hard of surface.” —New York Review of Books
(Lenox, MA) Shakespeare & Company presents A Perfect Pair of Wharton Comedies. Based on short stories originally penned by the Berkshires’ legendary Edith Wharton, Roman Fever and The Fullness of Life have been adapted by Shakespeare & Company Founding Member and Training Director Dennis Krausnick. The Wharton Comedies will run at the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre as part of their 2017 season August 17 through September 10.
“In years past, performing Edith Wharton’s adapted short stories at The Mount, followed by afternoon tea on her sun drenched terrace, was its own kind of magic.” Director Normi Noel reminisced. “This summer, we are inviting you back, this time to another intimate theatre space, just down the road from The Mount at our 70 Kemble Street property as we celebrate our 40th Season.”
Roman Fever and The Fullness of Life, penned at the beginning and the end of Wharton’s career, demonstrate both the early voice and the finely honed craft of this beloved American author and Berkshire native. Roman Fever follows two middle aged women, long term friends and former romantic rivals on holiday in Rome locked in a fierce debate about the merits of their respective daughters. Their friendly(ish) debate turns to reminiscing about a previous mutual love interest, which in turn leads to shocking revelations about what exactly is fair in love and war. The Fullness of Life reveals, quite charmingly, that the afterlife, as perfectly enchanting as it may seem, may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

These Wharton Comedies features veteran Shakespeare & Company members Corinna May, Diane Prusha, and David Joseph under the guidance of Long-time Company Director, Normi Noel. The creative team includes Stephen Ball (Lighting Designer), Patrick Brennan (Set Designer), Kiki Smith (Costume Designer), Amy Altadonna (Sound Designer), and Fran Rubenstein (Stage Manager).
Tickets for The Wharton Comedies are available online at shakespeare.org, or by calling Shakespeare & Company’s box office at (413) 637-3353. The Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible. Shakespeare & Company is located at 70 Kemble Street in Lenox, Massachusetts. This production is generously sponsored by Natalie & Howard Shawn and Eleanor Lord & Margaret Wheeler.

She was well acquainted with many of her era’s other literary and public figures, including Theodore Roosevelt, and was a notable resident of the Berkshire at her picturesque estate “The Mount”.
