Hector Handmade’s Artist of the Month for August is Zac Rood of Mecklenburg, New York Join us August 17th for his Northern Forest Art Show Opening 5-8 Technique: These cross sectional wood block relief prints expose the annual growth cycles of the various hardwoods from which they were prepared. Every year a new ring of growth is accumulated--encircling and emerging from the previous years growth. As the tree grows, the tree rings express the local ecology and climate. Wide rings are large growth years with ample rain and sun, while the densely packed rings are years of stress, perhaps due to drought or shade or disease. The outer edges on many pieces show the effects of natural weathering--from bacterial and fungal decay, or from insect herbivory. Each print tells the story of the life of the tree. The trees for the prints in this series have all been sourced directly from the hardwood forests of the Finger Lakes. The artist has spent most of his life exploring and coming to know these forests. Through the process of making each piece--sawn from the trees, surfaced, inked and hand rubbed to achieve the final print--a unique appreciation of the ecology of the forests is experienced. Each species of tree also has its own material properties, a range of densities, of fiber and grain arrangement, that is expressed in the prints. Through this print work the artist continues to learn about the very distinct character of the northern woods he calls home. All prints express the artist’s appreciation of and inspiration from Bryan Nash Gill (1961-2013). About the Artist: Zac has grown, studied, worked in the finger lakes for over 33 years. He spent much of that time engaged and learning on a small farm and greenhouse growing operation run by his family: Moon Valley Plant Company. He studied cognitive science and linguistics at Cornell University as an undergraduate, apprenticed in construction trades, and later returned to Cornell for a masters degree in landscape architecture, which he now practices at a small firm in Ithaca, NY. The pieces on display here mix elements of all these aspects coupled with a lifelong interest in woodcraft -- furniture building, carving, and experimentation; always exploring material properties.
