BACKBONE OF THE WIND
A huge earthquake, a nuclear accident, a pandemic ... Whenever I face a catastrophe beyond human knowledge, what is the power of my work? my work, work…? I have no choice but to ask back, and I am just helplessly beaten up. Even in the depressed days, warm foods, warm rooms, and warm baths will lift the body and feelings and give people courage and energy that will surely permeate your body. And even if you are depressed and sadly overwhelmed, you will gradually permeate the painful hearts of the performing arts that deliver music, stories, and laughter. Such strength is wonderful.
Then what is the power of the picture? It never gain control or enforce obedience. As it were, a small mirror that faces each other. Face alone, as the peace of mind that I arrived at in the search for the only one of the author's creation, there is gently there, just snuggle together. What is told is connected only when the viewer asks. Each one is there when they face each other. No god or hero appears, at the same time, no one can name you evil by anyone. Maybe That can't do anything but take nothing of you. Neither praise nor dislike is necessary. Maybe it's there as a collection of silly acts. Still, I believe it's not meaningless.

大震災、原発事故、パンデミック・・・人知を超えた大災害と向き合うたびに、私の仕事、私の作品のチカラってなんだ？と問い返さざるを得ないし、ただただ無力に打ちひしがれる。
落ち込んだ日々の中でも、体と気持ちを高揚させ、勇気や元気を人々に与えてくれる暖かい食べ物、暖かい部屋、暖かなお風呂はきっと、つらい体に染み渡る。そして、うつむいて悲しみに打ちのめされていようとも、音楽や語りや笑いを届けてくれる芸能たちもつらい心に徐々に染み渡ることだろう。そんな力持ちはすばらしいものだ。じゃあ、絵のチカラは？
絵は何も強いない。ぽつんと向き合う小さな鏡。一人になって向き合って、作者の創作のたったひとりの模索の中でたどり着いた先にある安らぎとして、そっとそこにあり、ともに寄り添うだけ。語られることは、見る人から問いかけられて初めてつながっていく。それぞれに、ぽつんと向き合ったときに、そこにある。私の描くものには神もヒーローも登場しないけれど、誰かに悪の汚名を着せたりしない。なにもしてあげられないかもしれないが、何も取りあげない。賞賛も嫌悪もどちらも無用。一人のたわいのないのない行為の集積としてそこにある。それでも、無意味なんかじゃあないと信じている。

Considering Lao-Tse
I think about how to represent the unformed figure; that “something” without shape.
I feel great empathy with the philosophy of Lao-Tse.
For example, the significance of a coffee cup lies not in its body but in the empty space part.
A valley exists between two cliffs. There is nothing there, so water, plants, animals… gathers there.
My interest is in the emptiness, the inside of the cup.
I am thinking about the meaning of power, my own power, to create art.
I define myself from this emptiness not for the purpose of depicting some matters.
Therefore, I don't need an ideal story protagonist in my work.
It would be fine if there were “lines” that simply conveyed a selfless act
as a trajectory of the passage of time and thought.
