Here’s how human athletes (our very BEST human athletes) measure up against a few other members of the animal kingdom. We don’t look too good.
BUT there is one physical activity where humans actually do pretty well. In fact, we might be better than every other species on planet earth. Watch Skunk Bear’s latest video to learn more:

This is really cool.
An onna-bugeisha (女武芸者) was a type of female warrior belonging to the Japanese upper class. Many wives, widows, daughters, and rebels answered the call of duty by engaging in battle, commonly alongside samurai men. They were members of the bushi (samurai) class in feudal Japan and were trained in the use of weapons to protect their household, family, and honour in times of war. They also represented a divergence from the traditional ‘housewife’ role of the Japanese woman. They are sometimes referred to as female samurai. Significant icons such as Empress Jingu, Tomoe Gozen, Nakano Takeko, and Hōjō Masako are famous examples of onna bugeisha. (x)

UPDATE: PLUTO IN COLOUR CONFIRMED
“New color images from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft show two very different faces of the mysterious dwarf planet, one with a series of intriguing spots along the equator that are evenly spaced. Each of the spots is about 300 miles (480 kilometers) in diameter, with a surface area that’s roughly the size of the state of Missouri.“

GUYS GUYS GUYS
I am SO happy you’re excited about space, but I just want y’all to remember that these are artist’s renderings of what they think New Horizons will see upon reaching Pluto.
Currently this is the best image we have of Pluto and its moon Charon:

Which is still a HUGE deal because we’re gathering so much data about it just from these distant readings. New Horizons actually has taken better pictures than Hubble ever has already and it’s still super far out. Hopefully some stunning pictures like these artist’s renderings are what we see when it reaches pluto in July
Until then keep getting excited!

Hey! That looks like lethocerus americanus! It's a species of giant water bug, not exactly a threat to your life since the biggest prey they eat are very small fish, but you should definitely steer clear because their bite while not being dangerous can be painful. (Not that it would seem like you were about to touch it)
Tumblr media
Dear tumblr bug lovers,
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? IT’S AS HUGE AS IT SEEMS (like at least 2 inches) AND I SAW IT AT THE BUS STOP LAST NIGHT JUST A LITTLE NORTH OF MINNEAPOLIS. TELL ME WHAT THIS IS AND IF I SHOULD BE GRATEFUL IT DIDNT KILL ME.

Solar energy that doesn’t block the view
A team of researchers at Michigan State University has developed a new type of solar concentrator that when placed over a window creates solar energy while allowing people to actually see through the window. It is called a transparent luminescent solar concentrator and can be used on buildings, cell phones and any other device that has a clear surface. And, according to Richard Lunt of MSU’s College of Engineering, the key word is “transparent.”

High Current/Amps through metal
Any metal that can conduct low voltage / high amperage electricity acts as a resistor between two electrode wires (as in the case above), which are made out of copper, which has a better conductivity than iron/steel which heats up due to the extreme electrical resistance.
Copper (Cu):
Resistivity: ρ(Ω·m) at 20ºC = 1.68×10−8
Conductivity: σ (S/m) at 20ºC = 5.96×107
Temp. Coefficient:  0.003862 (K−1)
Iron (Fe): (although what you see in the gif is steel, iron comes pretty close)
Resistivity: ρ(Ω m) at 20ºC = 1.00×10−7
Conductivity: σ (S/m) at 20ºC = 1.00×107
Temp. Coefficient: 0.005 (K−1)

Women Artists Visibility Event: The Museum of Modern Art opens but not to women artists, NYC on June 14, 1984 Shot by Clarissa Sligh
Despite the increased visibility of women artists by 1984, most were not included in mainstream gallery or museum exhibitions. When the Museum Of Modern Art opened the exhibition the “International Survey of Painting and Sculpture,” with great fan fare, of the 169 artists chosen, all were white and less than 10 percent were women.
Women artists were incensed. The Women’s Caucus for Art and other women’s groups in the area organized to protest the underrepresentation of women artists.
Included in the photographs are Lucy Lippard, May Stevens, Linda Cunningham, Emma Amos, Sabra Moore, Sharon Jaddis, and Alida Walsh. The posters were pasted all over Soho, a vastly different place from the Soho of today.
