How did we get here? How did we get to potentially the last Ted Petty Invitational tournament? Well, you’d have to start at the beginning, before the TPI ran, the Sweet Science 16 walked.

It’s the year 2000 and after an influx of wrestlers from the Midwest to IWAMS - Chris Hero, Colt Cabana, CM Punk, Paul E Smooth, Ace Steel, plus our regular roster members (Suicide Kid, Tarek the Great, Harry Palmer, Chip Fairway, etc) not partaking in the deathmatch arts, the Sweet Science 16 was born. Chris Hero was the inaugural winner of the tournament in 2000, Ace Steel in 2001. Unfortunately the passing of the late great Ted Petty, professionally known as Flyboy Rocco Rock (of the Public Enemy) would lead to the Sweet Science 16 being renamed. Ian Rotten, with the blessing of the Petty family, renamed the tournament The Ted Petty Invitational. His reasoning that Rocco Rock, while known for helping innovate tables being used in those crazy ECW Arena brawls could realistically do it all. Brawler, lucha libre, technical, what we now call American Strong Style & anything in between.

The 2002 TPI featured Ken Anderson vs Colt Cabana, “Sick” Nick Mondo vs Spyder Nate Webb, Ace Steel vs Super Dragon, BJ Whitmer vs Matt Murphy, Jimmy Rave vs Tarek the Great, Chris Hero vs Matt Stryker, AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels & CM Punk vs M-Dogg 20 to round out the field.

Hell of a tournament debut for 2002. 2003 was no different & of course everyone, if you’re a wrestling fan, knows about the 2004 TPI. A tournament myself & many others have called the greatest pro wrestling tournament in history.

Past tournament winners include BJ Whitmer, Danny Daniels, AJ Styles, Matt Sydal, Kongo Kong, Chris Hero (only man to win a SS16 & TPI tournament), Aaron Williams (first ever back to back), Larry D & most recently Tyler Matrix

Past competitors besides the ones listed include more than a handful of competitors on your TV screen nowadays - AJ Styles, CM Punk, Eddie Kingston, Chuck Taylor, Seth Rollins, Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Bobby Fish, Roderick Strong, Ricochet, Mustafa Ali, Jonathan Gresham, Timothy Thatcher, Joey Janela, Sami Callihan, Rickey Shane Page, Larry D, among countless others you can see on your television wrestling program.

While I certainly hope it doesn’t end up being the last TPI tournament, there’s no denying the the impact the tournament has had since the name debuted in 2002. Who will be the 2021 TPI winner? Will Aaron Williams be the only man to win 3 TPI tournaments? Will an upstart like Billy Tipton etch his name in history by winning the last ever TPI? Could the back to back KOTDM Eric Ryan make history again? Will we have a standing room only selllout letting the TPI live to see 2022? The only way to find out is by being there live in Jeffersonville, IN at the ArenA this Friday & Saturday.

Tripp Cassidy suffers a devastating injury [March 10th 2018]

The word “fake” gets uttered in professional wrestling a lot, but how can it be disputed when you have moments like these? At the 2018 Prince Of The Deathmatches tournament, “The Oddity” Tripp Cassidy competed in a Fans Bring The Weapons matches, in which a pane of glass used in a coffee table was set up. Cassidy went through the glass which broke into shards, one of which pierced his shoulder and left a sizeable hole which took seventeen staples to close up. 

There’s a more gruesome look at the hole just after the injury here, but trrrrust me… it’s not for the feint of heart. The cut was only one inch away from piercing a major artery which could have spelled the end of not just Cassidy’s career, but his life.
