Veil of Secrets never needed a sequel. It was a self contained story. There was a kidnapping, some murders, and the culprit was found at the end. There was nothing else to explore. Perhaps an epilogue to see where the MC ended up, especially for those who spent diamonds to stay with their chosen LI. But ultimately, everything was nicely wrapped up.

Nightbound, on the other hand...

MC literally discovered her true potential in the very last chapter. They killed the creature that was deemed unkillable for the whole book. They never really got to learn about their powers. I also feel like there's more going on in regards to Nik and the Fate. There was more going on in the end, and it didn't feel as nicely concluded as Veil of Secrets did.

I've never really understood the decisions PB made in regards to whether or not a book gets a sequel (such as Big Sky Country getting one; that whole reality show thing felt tacked on). But Nightbound not getting a sequel? Definitely mind boggling.

the reason that i can’t stand this rise of cgi and downfall of 2d animation is that the new Cats movie would have flowed so much better as a cartoon animated movie. im really getting tired of studios treating 2d animation as the “lesser form” when many times it is absolutely necessary to make a concept work

Stories that have the whole “here’s your long lost dad” and don’t do anything to actually show MC and dad building a connection is bad writing.

Lord Elric may be our father but I’m not gonna feel bad about him dying because MC wasn’t even looking for him. He didn’t try looking for her either. As far as we know, dude had a one night stand and that’s supposed to be compelling?

I mean, D&D MC’s parents were tragically forced apart. Her father wanted nothing more than to be with her mother and, when he had completely given up hope in being with the woman he loved, he gets a letter saying that his daughter is alive and waiting to meet him.

He was desperate to find his baby girl. She’s his baby—the precious baby he would’ve had and given everything if he had known. He was so eager to reunite with his child and, as soon as he did, he did everything in his power to give her exactly what he would’ve given her had she been raised in his house from birth.

Losing him was such a blow because he was so eager and so desperate to reunite the remains of the family he would’ve had, to be with MC and by extension the last legacy of her mother, whom he loved. He died in his home, clutching his daughter’s hand, at peace knowing he did everything he could’ve done to care for her in his final days and knowing he got to spend time with her.

Finding out a piece of yourself you didn’t know and losing it is only as tragic as long as you make it compelling and NB? Hasn’t done that.
