I feel like a lot of people's misconceptions and misunderstandings about DID would be cleared up immediately if they just read the ICD-11. Specifically with regards to amnesia.
Like, a lot of people keep wanting to figure out "how much amnesia COUNTS??", "is my amnesia bad enough??", "what if I don't have amnesia?", etc. which is valid and fair, like I was also that person, but I just want to point to what the ICD-11 says about amnesia with DID.
Here's what the ICD-11 says about DID:
Alternation between distinct personality states is not always associated with amnesia. That is, one personality state may have awareness and recollection of the activities of another personality state during a particular episode. However, substantial episodes of amnesia are typically present at some point during the course of the disorder.
This is the reason why amnesia for early childhood, but NOT daily life "counts" towards the amnesia criterion for DID. It's also directly stating that, yes, people do, and often do, remember the actions of different alters.
It also just makes sense.
I mean, if somebody with DID eventually integrates enough so that they don't have much amnesia anymore, that doesn't suddenly change their diagnosis. They still have DID.
Amnesia is so, so tricky and it's really not what people tend to think it is. Like, when we think of amnesia, a lot of people think of, like, somebody standing somewhere and then just "teleporting" in a way with no idea what they were doing. And that can definitely happen for a lot of people with DID/OSDD, but that's not really what it's like for a lot of people, and it's not the ONLY way that amnesia presents itself.
Sometimes you just literally don't know if you experience amnesia from DID until you start looking for it.
Alters may have varying levels of amnesia between on another; meaning that some alters might have strong amnesia barriers between each other, while other alters might not have any amnesia barriers.
"I'm always conscious, I'm always just Me, I never just black out and wake up somewhere else, I'm always awake and conscious and just Me" is a big reason I was in denial of my DID for so long, and I'm just here to tell you that that's normal and that's how it is for most people with DID and you feeling like you always remember everything and you're "always conscious" doesn't automatically mean that you don't have DID and don't have amnesia. It can Feel like you always remember Everything when in reality you actually Are experiencing amnesia and just don't know it/don't realize/aren't aware of it. I myself was convinced I always remember everything. I still feel like I never forget anything.
(This post is safe for endos to interact/reblog, but this is about DID/OSDD only)
That ol’ chart of mine makes the rounds online periodically and it drives me crazy because it’s frankly not very good. So, I finally got around to remaking it.
I doubt this will get anywhere near as popular, but I wanted to make it.
Good reference for animation, comics, and for visualizing phonetics!
