The Boys in the Band Plot
The wikipedia plot can be really confusing and i want to give you guys a lot of detail of this play so it’s easier to understand what’s happening and this took me forever to write so god please read it and give this play a chance it’s SO GOOD. I just really want more people to appreciate it because this play is so important and deserves so much recognition
even if you don’t read this whole thing please god reblog so that others will read it because i’m so desperate this took me an hour to write and i NEED PEOPLE TO APPRECIATE THIS ART
Okay so this is during the summer of 1968 in new york city. This story revolves mostly around the character Michael (played by Kenneth Nelson and to be played by Jim Parsons in the revival). Michael is setting up at his apartment for a birthday party for his friend Harold (played by Lenord Frey and to be played by Zachary Quinto). Michael’s friend Donald (played by Frederick Combs and to be played by Matt Bomer) shows up to his apartment early. Michael gets a call from his old collage roommate Alan (played by Peter White and to be played by Brian Hutchison) Alan is in the city and wants to talk to Michael and Michael tells him he is not available because he is having a party soon and he doesn’t want Alan coming because Alan is straight and is not accepting of homosexuality and all of the guests coming to the party for harold are gay/bi men. Alan starts to cry and explain that he really needs to talk with Michael and Michael gives in and tells him he can come over for a quick drink. Eventually guests start to arrive including Emory who is very flamboyant and acts like a “sterotypical gay man” (played by Cliff Gorman and to be played by Robin De Jesus), Larry (played by Keith Prentice and to be played by Andrew Rannells) who is a fashion photographer with monogamy issues and in a relationship with Hank and frequently cheats on Hank), Hank (played by Laurence Luckinbill and to be played by Tuc Watkins) a bisexual man who has children and is in the process of being divorced from his wife and is faithful to Larry and knows that Larry cheats on him. The men begin to socialize and eventually Bernard shows up (played by Reuben Greene and to be played by Michael B. Washington. All the guests have now arrived
except Harold has still not shown up. Alan calls Michael back and apologizes for making an ass of himself by crying on the phone and explains that he won’t be able to make it to Michaels house and they make plans for lunch the next day and Alan tells Michael to forget about him crying and that he doesn’t want to ever talk about it. The men begin to dance and have fun and Alan decides to come over without letting michael know. Hank answers the door and legs Alan in. Alan walks in to the men dancing and he is not fond of this sight. Everyone greets Alan. Alan starts a conversation with Hank and is comfortable with Hank only because he thinks that Hank is straight because Alan sees his ring. Alan talks with Michael privately and tells him that he likes all of the guests but particularly that Hank is attractive and that he is not too fond of emory because of his “femininity”. A young man shows up at the door and they expected it o be Harold but it was Emory’s present to Harold. A cowboy (played by Robert La Tourneaux and to be played by Charlie Carver.) The cowboy came early and is some sort of like stripper prostitute?? He is very unintelligent and stays at the party. Alan gets ready to leave and only greets Hank goodbye. Emory then instigates Alan because he senses that Alan does not like them. Alan gets mad and calls him a faggot while pushing Emory against the wall and they fight. The men are pulled apart and Harold shows up. Alan goes upstairs and Hank assists him because alan begins to vomit. The men then socialize and eat dinner and Harold opens gifts. Then the men are forced to go inside the apartment when they were outside due to the incoming storm. Michael says that they should all play the “Telephone game.” This game involves calling someone who you have truly loved , you get more points for if you tell them who you are, if they answer, if you tell them you love them etc. Whoever ends up with the most points wins. Michael wants to play this game in an attempt to out Alan because he believes that Alan is secretly a Homosexual. And so i’m gonna stop here because then it’s gonna spoil everything but let’s just say the game gets very intense and y’all need to watch this play!!!

okay yALL i just need to say this. as many of you know, andrew rannells is going to be in the revival of the boys in the band starting in april. and it is an absolutely AMAZING PLAY. there are literally no stans and it makes sense ig bc it’s a play but the movie (which is pretty much the same asthe play including the same cast from the original) is on youtube and it might be confusing so i suggest you read the plot on wikipedia but yeah this play is just really amazing and i think everyone needs to watch it. aLSO andrew’s character Larry is literally the same as whizzer 1. he is a photographer 2.he has monogamy issues 3. he is in a relationship with a married man
