The Embassy Row Series by Ally Carter is underrated.
I mean a mystery, psychological, political, conspiracy, royalty, international, action series that actually has nuanced characters with realistic development— I mean how has it not become booktok famous? I would commit crimes to read it for the first time again.
Also Castles by Halsey is the PERFECT song for the last book in the trilogy.

“I wanted a thousand different things as we stood there, but most of all, I wanted the girl who had been beside me in Boston to turn and realize that I was beside her now. ... “This feels like a safe house.” She finally turned to look at me. “Doesn't it feel safe, Cam?” “Yeah, Macey,” I said softly. “It does.”

I also found original covers of the series in a resale shop I worked at!
I went to Goodwill today and found a first edition hard cover of LKYK and I'm in heaven.
🎉 A secondhand bookshop is actually how I re-found the Gallagher Girls in adulthood. I found LYKY in my first year of college, right before UWS was set to come out. It was a really cool moment, to grow up with Cammie all over again.

Can we just fangirl over Blonde Identify for a minute because WOW. Ally Carter strikes again. Do Saywer and Zoe give you a little Townsend/Abby vibes? What was your favorite part of the book. Just wow. Ally needs to write about spies for the rest of my life.
Um, we absolutely can. Ally Carter shaped my current spy genre obsession and it was so comfy to return to her style for this particular type of story. When I opened my box and saw the plaid spine 😭😭😭 She totally gets it. I will say that I didn't have one particular favorite part—rather, I was fond of the hit-after-hit lineup of witty and zingy lines throughout the entire book. There were some lines where I just had to stop and shove my face into a pillow, because they were just that good. The characters had so much chemistry, it was phenomenal. And there was one part, in particular, that felt like classic Ally Carter, but I will put it under a cut to avoid spoilers:
If I had a nickle for every time Ally Carter's twists contained a handsome MI6 agent that looks like the love interest, and is later revealed to be his father, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot. But it's weird that it happened twice. Anyway, loved it.

How do you think each of the older gen thought about having kids? Even in first circle Matt has said things about having a family. Why do you think they only had Cam?
Listen, I'm no international intelligence agent, but I imagine it's pretty tricky to have kids with that lifestyle. It's pretty tricky to have kids as a normal person! I won't pretend to know much about the personal lives of CIA employees, but I do know that the agency eats your entire life. I'm serious. Listen to any interview with an ex-employee. They lose their outside friends, they have to regularly lie to their families, their workloads are intense, and they work intense hours to make it all happen—and that's assuming they stay Stateside. It's a whole other deal for those that travel.
And, coincidentally, having a kid also eats your entire life—the daycare, the school projects, the milestones. Making sure they're happy, and healthy, and developing empathy. Hours spent at the CIA are long and hard, but they've got nothing on parenthood hours.
I imagine that trying to take part in two things that require so much of a person is just not sustainable for most. Returning to fiction, I don't think Rachel pictured herself with kids, but Matt was such a driving force for that Middle America Life that he worked her into it eventually. Abby and Townsend never would have considered it until they were out of the field, which is why they had the twins when they were a bit older. And Joe? I think Joe probably wanted a family, but he never saw a way to get it until he found Rachel and Cammie later in life, and I think he finds immense peace with the two of them. Just one more thing Matthew Morgan left behind for his very best friend.

Thanksgiving GG Style
Rachel: The Host™. Has spent the last two days frantically running around the cabin trying to clean up old dishes, dirty clothes, various lethal weapons, dusty cabinets, and confidential files. Emailed Madam Dabney to ask what kind of decorations she should use for their table. May or may not have borrowed a dress from the Gallagher Academy spy closet to wear.
Joe Solomon: Has kept Rachel from the brink of three mental breakdowns so far and prevented the house from burning down when she attempted to cook a sweet potato casserole. Spent all night checking on the security measures over the entire property (some habits never die). Was yelled at by Rachel for trying to wear the same flannel he wore all week to the dinner.
Cammie: Slept in and had to get ready in one hour. Almost burnt her hair off when she attempted to curl it before it was dry. How the hell does she manage to make a simple skirt and blouse look so good? She doesn’t tell anyone that Macey helped choose her outfit. Makes Zach stop by Starbucks on the drive down so that she can be fully awake before arriving at the house.
Zach: Was up at 5:30 AM sharp. Probably ran like 10 miles and caught a criminal before getting ready. Thought about waking Cammie up but was happy she was finally sleeping the whole night through and decided to let her rest. Watched the news while emptying the dishwasher. Rolled up his sleeves past his elbows because “he didn’t want to get food on them” but gave a sly wink at Cammie from across the table as she drooled slightly.
Bex: Got in from a mission at one in the morning and fell asleep on the couch. Woke up to Liz calling her phone to make sure she was remembering to bring the rolls. “Of course! I got them on my counter right here-- no I did not just wake up!” (They were definitely not on her counter) Wore a casual yet classy all black outfit that turned heads when she sprinted into the grocery store and snatched the last pack of crescent rolls before a Karen could reach it.
Liz: Had her outfit planned two days in advance, her food prepared a week in advance, and an itinerary for the day on hand almost a month ago. Was in charge of all of the desserts. Ever since her first failed attempts while she was in the Academy, she had mastered the art of baking. Almost dropped all the pies down the stairs while getting to her car because she thought she should call Bex to make sure she got what she needed (she didn’t believe her one bit though).
Macey: The best dressed (of course). Almost used her laser lipstick instead of the regular one though. Her louboutins were a little out of place in the rustic cabin but it was clear she was perfectly at peace there. At one point was found standing out by the lake thinking about all the things that had happened since she had first woken up in this house. Got a call after dinner asking her to go on a mission the next day-- “Is it somewhere warm? Sign me up.”
Preston: Excited little golden retriever ™. He was invited to a family holiday with all his friends!! It was the best day of his life (besides that one time he got to kiss Macey on the train). Still a little twinge of sadness as he tries to forget about why he isn’t spending it with his regular family, but Macey quickly distracts him with a kiss. “We’re your new family now!” Insists they listen to Christmas music for the entire drive so they can get “in the holiday mood.” Macey acts annoyed but soon joins in.
Abby: Is running late (definitely has nothing to do with Townsend getting in the shower with her--) Takes a call with a North Korean informant while casually putting on her makeup. Downs two cups of coffee before heading out the door. Texts Rachel to let her know that they are on their way and that they are sorry for being late. O shit! We forgot the napkins--
Townsend: Remembered the napkins. Just decided not to tell Abby he grabbed them so she could panic the rest of the way to the cabin. Usually hates holidays and large gatherings, but for the first time is excited okay with going. Made a green bean casserole that is surprisingly good considering he hasn’t cooked real food for three months. Offers to help Joe carve the Turkey. May or may not have been the one to start the game of knife throwing after dinner.

could u do “I managed to convince the appropriate people to get you some time off.” for abby/townsend i am unashamed trash for those losers
Same, same, same, I am Tabby trash, I have always been Tabby trash and I will always be Tabby trash.  I’ve given up on any sort of drabble format that I might have been aiming for and have just started writing entire shorts from this list of prompts.  Enjoy!
It’s a little like herding cats.
Except instead of cats, it’s two barely twenty-somethings with a persistent need for clandestine perfection.  And instead of herding, it’s more like closing the door, locking it, and ignoring the endless knock that comes from the other side.  So, actually, it’s not like herding cats at all, and the only true similarities lie in the unyielding annoyance and the fact that they don’t listen.
But not this time.  This time, when Abigail Cameron struts into his Langley office (with a window, that bastard), an unusual quiet falls over the sleek grey space, and it triggers something in those super spy ears of his.  “What did you do?”
Townsend has perfected his accusatory tone over the years, but it falls flat against the mischief in her smile.  In fact, something about that specific tone of voice in that specific accent somehow makes her feel even more mischievous.  “Dinner tonight?”
It would be an innocent enough question, if it weren’t paired with two round-trip tickets to Buenos Aries and a knowing grin.
He looks up at her over his readers, as though he thinks that it’s a joke and, furthermore, that he doesn’t find it funny.  “Very cute.”
“I didn’t blow $78.63 on travel insurance for cute, Townsend.”
"So you did get the travel insurance, then,” he says, returning to his scribbled paperwork.  He’s got so much paperwork these days.  She never thought she’d live to see his shift to deskman.  “An unusual show of foresight for you.”
“I knew you’d approve.”
“And more importantly, you knew I’d say no.”
“You haven’t said it yet.”
He glances up at her once more, studies her in that highly-trained manner that is second nature to him.  Finally, he puts his pen down and leans back in his chair.  “In exactly three minutes, your niece and her boyfriend are going to come barreling through my door with about fifty new questions and at least six off-the-wall theories about an ancient organization in which I am the world’s foremost expert,” he says, although she doesn’t need reminding.  It’s exactly the kind of thing that’s happened every day since the task force was first formed.  “And unfortunately, I am the only one who will be able to talk them back down to a reasonable level.”
“Unfortunately,” she scoffs.  “Are we seriously pretending that coaching these two isn’t your favorite thing you’ve ever done?”
“It’s not my favorite thing I’ve ever done,” he says.  “Zip lining in Columbia is my favorite thing I’ve ever done.”
“Never pegged you for a zip liner.”
“Neither did the cartel that was tailing me.”
“Ignoring that incredibly hot detail,” she says.  “Putting it aside for later.”
“When the CIA offered me this position, I wasn’t told I’d be babysitting.”
"So we are pretending.”  She leans up against his desk, and her gaze drifts out of the window (seriously, how did he get an office that faces the Potomac?).  “That’s good to know.  In that case, I must have imagined that glint in your eye every time Zach asks you a question.”
“Abigail.”
“Or that smirk you get whenever Cammie takes notes about one of your old Circle stories, which are totally boring, by the way.”
“Abigail.”
“You like to be needed, Townsend,” she says, and she turns back to him this time.  Meets those blue eyes.  Shrugs. “I’m not gonna tell anyone.  I’m real good with secrets, you know.”
It is in this moment that he takes advantage of his newfound American citizenship and pleads the fifth.  He just eyes the plane tickets, still splayed in her hand, and he lingers for just a little too long.  “I really can’t go,” he says.  “They have a substantial lead in Cairo and they may need me to—”
“I managed to convince the appropriate people to get you some time off.”  And sure enough, their three minutes are up.  They both feel it.  That eternal clock that sits at the center of their souls.  But for the first time in a long time, Zach and Cam don’t walk through his door for their afternoon briefing.  She must imagine that little bit of disappointment in his features.
In the silence, she holds up one of the tickets and straightens it out smooth.  It only takes a single finger for her to slide it in his front pocket.  “Dinner tonight,” she says.  “That little bistro on the ocean front—you know the one.  Don’t be late.”
“How did you...?”
“I’m a damn good spy, Townsend,” she says, popping herself back up and beginning her grand exit.  “But I’m an even better aunt.”

Wait a second, if Cammie’s eyes only reach Zach at about neck level in heels then how tall is Zachary Goode?
And how did I apparently overlook this obvious height difference for my entire tween and teenage years?
