Fave martin blackwood things:

- lied about a MASTERS in PARAPSYCHOLOGY in his cv. why did he choose such a niche study like how many jobs could that even get you

- writes the most terrible poetry you’ve ever heard (said with love) and plays background music while recording it onto a tape recorder for the vibes

- when encountering a terrifying worm lady that tries to add you to her flesh hive, he MAKES SURE to keep some of her worms just so he can stick it in his bosses face

-the rudest guy in the world (said boss) does one nice thing for him that he didn’t expect and he immediately falls in love (this is real to me ok let me have this)

-wears video game shirts to work

-goes on rants about spiders importance to the ecosystem to a guy with the worst arachnophobia ever

-hides CO2 cans so that ‘the worms don’t find it’

-forces his boss to go on lunch dates with him so he doesn’t completely lose it to paranoia

-walked into his bosses office, found a DEAD BODY THAT WAS DEFINITELY MURDERED, and all he says is “oh jon 😕😕”

-has practically the same reaction later on when someone tells him his boss compelled them to relive their worst trauma

-gets told the guy he’s been in love with for multiple years treats him horribly and goes “yeah and”

-outsmarted an avatar of the lonely despite being in a horrible depressive episode with no contact to anyone else

-manages to make peter fully believe he’s dedicated to the lonely even as his crush of many many years is practically confessing his love at every interaction

Hello :) I am madly in love with your work. I was wondering if I could use your How To Gut piece for my philosophy class. We're looking at what makes something art and I wanted to use your work for my assignment. I can't really articulate how much I love your art. It makes my tummy hurt in the best way possible. But in short I'd let you dissect me any day. (Also if you have any information about the piece like why you made it or certain decisions you made I would really appreciate it :))

so i talked about how to gut a little bit here and i actually wrote a short story for my creative writing workshop after drawing how to gut that ended up exploring similar themes and for that workshop we had to write a letter kind of discussing what the piece was about and why we wrote it, so i've had to figure out how to articulate the feelings that went into how to gut, but also this was a while ago so i hope this makes sense

anyways, one night i was looking up images of gutted fish because i was feeling just absolutely terrible and something about gutted fish comforted me at that moment. this wasn't like, a recurring habit of mine (although it's kind of become one) i was just suddenly drawn to it. while clicking around, i read this article called how to gut a fish in the dark by will matsuda. the insanely romantic and sensual (to me) descriptions of fish gutting combined with the obvious visual innuendo created a storm of jealousy inside me that i was not the fish currently being gutted. and thus how to gut was born.

i ended up repurposing this line in my frog4scalpel piece, but in my workshop letter i wrote something along the lines of: "because of how i view myself and my body, i can't imagine or want a love that's normal. it has to be something done to me and it has to take my guts out with it." and that's basically how to gut in a nutshell. the tone of the piece ended up quite different from the erotic shame-filled self-loathing pity party that inspired it, what with the narrator speaking to the gutter rather than the gutted themselves speaking (which is what my short story was) but i think the overall sentiment still holds 🎣
