My Austin with East 72nd + VASAV Digital
We’re still celebrating #internationalwomensday over here... I am so grateful to work alongside these two badass women. Meet Makenzi Hogan of East 72nd + Savannah Hickey of VASAV Digital who help keep The Scout Guide Austin’s social media + editorial features not only looking pretty, but full of fresh content. I love collaborating with them and a day doesn’t go by without us texting or emailing about something work-related (and otherwise!). We spend lots of time each day, week + month promoting the local businesses featured in our Volume 8 guide and most of their hard work is behind the scenes. So get to know our Austin team with a little deep dive into Makenzi + Sav’s favorite aspects of our favorite city. Enjoy! xx - LAK
Tumblr media
Photography by Paige Newton at Hotelette Austin | Left to right: Savannah Hickey of VASAV Digital + Makenzi Hogan (& Wilson) of East 72nd
TSG: What’s your favorite season in ATX?
MH: Spring! Nothing beats a 75 + sunny day in Austin, Texas between February + April!
SH: Spring! When you can appreciate the warm weather rolling in + when Austin comes alive again.
TSG: What’s your favorite Austin event?
MH: Austin City Limits or a TSG Austin launch party!
SH: Oh, Great answers Makenzi!! I’m going to have to agree.
TSG: What’s your favorite Austin neighborhood?
MH: This is so hard! I love the walkability + community of Rosedale, but also have a soft spot for the East Side.
SH: I love how charming Hydepark and love the spaciousness + hidden gems of Dripping Springs. Wineries, trails, ranches - the list can go on.
Tumblr media
(above) Makenzi Hogan of East 72nd
TSG: What’s your go-to place for a drink?
MH: Clark’s for $5 Happy Hour martinis!
SH: Barchi on Sundays! Great $5 lychee martinis & I can indulge in a sushi roll or 3 ;)
TSG: What’s your go-to coffee shop?
MH: Anywhere I can bring Wilson, the dog. If it’s sunny, we head to Better Half, but for cold or rainy weather, we hang out in the South Congress Hotel.
SH: I do love the Vietnamese Nitro at Hideout off Congress + 7th! Gives me the feel of a Friends coffee shop + their toasty sandwiches are a fave also.
TSG: What’s your go-to for a special night out?
MH: It’s always changing because Austin is always welcoming a new gorgeous restaurant or bar. Right now, it’s Comedor followed by Garage Bar next door!
SH: Starting off at any Tatsyu-ya restaurant/bar + spending the night on the Eastside. Whether that’s at Central Machine Works, Hotel Vegas or Whistlers.
Tumblr media
(above) Savannah Hickey of VASAV Digital
TSG: You know you’re an Austinite when…?
MH: ...you leave town for SXSW!
SH: ...you bring your pup to almost every bar + restaurant.
TSG: Favorite part about living in Austin?
MH: Aside from everything? I love that it has a big town culture with a Southern small-town attitude.
SH: Oh boy, I can write paragraphs. Buuutttt, I am going to try and keep it short. I love the dog-friendly atmosphere EVERYWHERE I go. I also love the outdoor culture and all of Austin’s hidden oasis’ - my favorites are around Lake Travis or the greenbelt. I’m also very proud to be part of the community of small business owners here in Austin!
TSG: Describe an ideal day in Austin…
MH: First, let’s set the stage: it’s sunny, but not too hot, allergies are non-existent and there’s no traffic, whatsoever. Wilson, the dog, and I will meet a friend to walk Town Lake, then make our way over to Swedish Hill or Tiny’s for lunch (with a glass of white wine, because #LadiesWhoLunch). After an outfit change, Wilson and I will head to San Jose to get ahead on work and other creative endeavors. If we’re being really indulgent, a massage at Milk & Honey. To follow up a great day, we’ll meet friends for dinner at Perla’s or Junes - outside of course!
SH: Definitely agree with Makenzi’s first sentence. All👏🏼of👏🏼that👏🏼is👏🏼huge! I love to start off the day with an early morning hike on a trail around the Greenbelt and if warm enough, a quick dip into sculpture falls. Then after a rinse + outfit change, head out for treasure hunting through east Austin’s boutiques and vintage’s shops, like Charm School or Dylan Wylde on South Lamar and squeeze in lunch from any food truck that is hiding near, preferably Las Trancas. Finishing off the day with a #happyhour at Whisler’s or Matt’s El Rancho.

Erin Donahue Tice on the Six Best Ways to Display Art
Tumblr media
Portrait by Hannah Mayson Needham
Originally from Ohio, artist Erin Tice of Erin Donahue Tice Art made her way to Austin by way of New York City. With a successful PR career under her belt, Erin took time to raise two busy little boys. This ultimately led Erin to experiment with painting as a creative outlet.
It comes as no surprise she’s a natural - she has an impeccable eye for color and design. Which is exactly why we turned to Erin for six tips on displaying art at home.
View more of Erin Donahue Tice’s work online or by appointment at Warden Art Agency and follow along with her on Instagram at @ErinDonahueTiceArt.
Keep reading for the six tips you need to know…
Tumblr media
From left to right: “Framed Collage Duo,” (sold as set, part II not pictured), 17.5x14.25 | “Surf Lodge Afternoons,” 48x60
Learn to Layer
Running out of wallspace? Layer your artwork. “Typically I use a large-scale canvas as the base and layer smaller works at the edges of the larger work,” Erin tells us, “and I love how the styling creates dimension.” It’s best to work biggest to smallest when layering your artwork, too.
Lean With It
There are no rules against leaning, rather than hanging, art. In fact, Erin prefers it for collectors who redecorate frequently or are renting. Not only does leaning artwork mean minimal disruption to your wallspace, but it creates a more relaxed vibe. Rest an oversized canvas on a credenza and style with books that complement the work’s colors.
Measure Up
If you are going to hang your art, a good rule of thumb is measuring 60 inches from the center of the wall to the floor. A piece of art hung too high or too low reads awkwardly. Erin also recommends measuring the piece of furniture you envision your art will hang over. And, of course, measure twice, hammer once!
Tumblr media
From left to right: “Sandy Lane,” 60x48 | “Breathing in Nature,” 60x48”
Find New Perspectives
“Art truly in the eye of the beholder,” Erin says. So, she encourages collectors to play with the orientation of abstract works. A professional framer can rewire paintings to allow for a new vertical or horizontal perspective. Feel free to reorient your abstract canvas to fit a space, taste or both!
Mix & Match
Break the rules and pair different artistic styles and mediums together. A mixed media collage layered against an impressionistic oil painting and abstract work shows your personality and adds interest to the room. In choosing which pieces to mix and match, Erin advises choosing works with similar color palettes.

Frame of Mind
To frame or not to frame? Erin believes it’s the collector’s choice. And while she gravitates towards classic black, gold and white frames, a burlwood option adds a much-needed pop of personality at an entryway. Erin also likes to get creative with how she frames her works. Experiment with floating paper works or leaving room between a canvas and its frame. But, Erin reminds us that framing isn’t necessary, and some works are meant to be displayed on an easel or brass stand!

An Interview with Artist Molly Haertle
Meet Molly Haertle, Registered Nurse by day, artist by night. Inspired by the beauty of everyday life, Molly captures the simple moments in distinctive impressionistic oil paintings. She’s currently focusing on a series of charcoal sketches of women caught in solitude, but you’re sure to recognize (and love!) her color-filled landscapes and portraits.
We sat down with our Midwesterner-turned-Austinite to discuss her start in painting, her inspiration and what’s on her horizon.
Tumblr media
TSG: First things first, tell us about how you got started painting… MH: I started painting at a very young age. But not many people knew because it was a very personal practice. I actually didn’t show my paintings to anyone until relatively recently! I got back into painting on days off from the hospital. It was a way to deal with the stress of nursing (if you know, you know!).
TSG: We love your focus on figures, especially female figures. Why is this your favorite subject? MH: I love painting the human figure because they’re so much more complex than any other subject. As for painting female figures, honestly, it’s strange that I focus on it because I consider myself such a tomboy! But I’m so inspired by how resilient women are and want to capture that. I’m especially inspired by my mother, who raised 8 kids while battling Lymes disease. I don’t know how she did it.
Tumblr media
From left to right: “Olive,” “Felicity”
TSG: While your main medium is impressionistic oil paintings, are you experimenting with any new mediums or styles right now? MH: Yes, I have been doing drawings with charcoal which has been so much fun!
TSG: They’re gorgeous! What inspired you to bring it back to the basics with your series of charcoal sketches? MH: When I started a new nursing job, I felt blocked and had no idea what I should paint. At that time, I wasn’t really motivated, either. So, I went back to my sketchbook and I realized charcoal sketches would be an awesome series - so raw and unfinished. It’s more intimate, which is what I want to reveal through my art.
TSG: Tell us a little bit about Molly Haertle Commissions. How do you collaborate with collectors? MH: I keep it simple! It’s a collaborative process where we discuss sizing, inspiration, color palette, etc. Usually, a client will come to me with photos they want me to paint and we narrow down the color palette.
TSG: What else is coming down the pipeline for Molly Haertle Fine Art? MH: During March, I’ll be doing a residency at Nina Beranto’s jewelry shop. Come shop originals and prints! I’m also excited to start live painting weddings in addition to wedding commissions.
Tumblr media
From left to right: “Sandy,” “Adriatic Sea”
TSG: We know this is probably an impossible question, but do you have a favorite piece of work? MH: “Summer” from my ATXGal Series.
TSG: What inspires you as an artist? MH: I’m inspired by the personal challenges of life that we, as humans, go through. I want to capture the simple moments or places that bring joy to people.
TSG: Where can we view your work in person - there’s nothing like seeing your fabulous paintings IRL! MH: I’m part of ATXGals, so you can find my works of art at their shows, which are like parties!
TSG: And, finally, we have to ask... as a newer Austinite, what does a perfect day in our city look like? MH: A slow morning of checking out a new coffee shop, running around Lady Bird Lake, followed by an evening meeting up with friends or painting!
View more of Molly’s beautiful work, purchase a painting or print or commission something original.

An Interview with Warden Art Agency
Warden Art Agency burst onto the Austin art scene in 2019. To celebrate their first - and very impressive - year in business, we sat down with Lufkin native and University of Texas grad, Rich Warner, to talk about Warden Art Agency’s Texas-centric mentality, design focus and unique network of artists. As Rich walked us through his gallery, introducing us to works from the Austin artists you need to know, we got a sneak peek at what makes his North Loop gallery so special.
WAA Website | @wardenartagency
Tumblr media
Rich Warner, Founder of Warden Art Agency | Photography by Hannah Mayson
TSG: Tell us about Warden Art Agency.
WAA: Warden Art Agency specializes in connecting Texas-based artists with interior design projects in the Austin area. We’ve built a business focused solely on the needs of a design-driven client. From advisory services to market search and procurement, we spend our days immersed in finding artwork on behalf of our clients. We also represent a curated group of up-and-coming and established artists through our client gallery. Our by-appointment model creates a more focused environment and allows private showings for individual collectors and interior designers.
TSG: What differentiates Warden from other art-focused businesses?
WAA: In the art world, you have the age-old gallery model that most people associate with purchasing artwork. As collector buying patterns have changed with social media and online research, buyers are calling for new avenues to view original artwork. We realized that there was a void in Austin for collectors and interior designers to view work (in person) by artists they have discovered via Instagram or other social platforms. That’s exactly the role our space is designed to fill. It’s about building connections within the art world and creating a comfortable environment for clients to experience the work.
TSG: Congrats on your first year in business, what has been your biggest achievement thus far?
WAA: Year one was all about building our artist network and understanding the demand of the Austin market.  We challenged ourselves with finding a unique slate of artists, at various price points, that would provide the greatest opportunity for placement in both residential and commercial projects.  We are extremely proud of the artist network we have built and are so grateful for the opportunity to represent each artist’s work.
TSG: Your gallery represents a wide variety of styles, tell us more.
WAA: We keep it modern and fresh like our projects and the designs of our clients. The gallery changes frequently, but you will always find a few common elements. We consistently represent a range of abstract work from heavily textured color progression (Tyler Guinn), to powerful fluidity and bold color (Rylie Caldwell), to playful movement inspired by nature (Alicia Philley). You will often find variations of folk-meets-pop figure work (B. Shawn Cox) and scaled-down representation of mural work (J Muzacz). As the work of our artist base evolves, so will the gallery.
TSG: You’ve recently expanded your portfolio beyond Austin-based artists, tell us more.
WAA: Yes, we are actively searching for unique work by artists in other Texas markets. We intend to maintain a portfolio of primarily Austin-based artists, but we are mixing in a few of our favorites from Houston and Dallas as well. More details coming soon!
TSG: You’ve introduced us to so many amazing artists in the past few months, how do you discover such unique talent?
WAA: Artists come to the agency in a variety of ways. Like most of our clients, we spend a lot of our time on Instagram and other social platforms reviewing content posted by artists. The conversation often begins with a simple insta-message or email. We also receive online inquiries from artists seeking representation and accept referrals from designers and collectors.  At the end of the day, it’s all about the body of work. We extensively review each artist’s portfolio and identify artists who match our clients’ tastes and needs.
TSG: Do you ever have buyers that are interested in commissions and how does that process work?
WAA: Commissions are a large part of our business. We understand how important scale and color will always be when matching an artist with a design. Sometimes it requires artwork created with the specific collector in mind. Each artist has a commission process unique to their body of work and time availability. Our agency manages this process for our clients and helps facilitate communication throughout production.
TSG: What advice do you have for first-time buyers?
WAA: Buying artwork is an investment. But… it’s an investment you will see every single day. At Warden, we talk to each of our collectors about the mood of their design and the space where the artwork will live. Our goal is to find work that complements the vision. The biggest advice we give our clients - especially first-time buyers - is to think about how you will feel when you see the piece as you enter the room. If that aligns with your vision for the space, then we have a match.
TSG: Can anyone schedule an appointment to view art + learn about your services?
WAA: Absolutely! Our client gallery is “appointment only” to provide our clients with a more intimate environment for viewing the work. Appointments for designers or individual collectors can be made through our website or by emailing [email protected].
TSG: What’s next for Warden Art Agency?
WAA: As we enter year two of operation, our goal is to continue to focus on bringing our clients a robust, but truly unique portfolio of original artwork that complements their design projects. We will continue working on client projects throughout the year and will be opening our doors in May for Big Medium’s West Austin Studio Tour.  Watch our social media for updates on those events!

An Interview with Hannah Mayson Photography
‘Tis the season of love, so it’s only fitting we sat down with Austin’s top wedding photographer (and TSG Austin Volume 7 photographer), Hannah Mayson, to chat about all things engagement and wedding photography.
Having worked with Hannah, we can wholeheartedly say that this woman's talent (and patience!) runs deep. Her eye for composition and lighting is unmatched, just keep scrolling to see what we mean. Whether it’s a once-in-a-lifetime day or a big commercial shoot, having Hannah behind the lens guarantees gorgeous results (and definitely some laughs along the way).
For a daily dose of ethereal beauty, be sure to follow her on Instagram. And if you’re ready to discuss your big day or next project, reach out and tell her The Scout Guide sent you!
Tumblr media
TSG: What drew you to shooting couples + weddings? How did you know that was what you wanted to focus on in your career as a photographer?
HM: You could say I initially stumbled into it, but quickly learned that my calm personality was a great fit for what can otherwise be a stressful day. I love getting to document incredibly special, joyful days in a way that actually feels natural for the clients!
Tumblr media
TSG: Your work has been published in so many places - from The Knot to Southern Weddings to Style Me Pretty - do you have one ‘pinch me’ moment that stands out?
HM: In 6 years, I’ve never had a client be unhappy with their pictures and honestly that is my biggest pinch me success moment!
Tumblr media
TSG: How would you describe the ‘Hannah Mayson Photography’ bride?
HM: Joyful, kind, loves the dancefloor!
TSG: After all of the huge weddings you’ve shot, we love that you celebrated your own special day in Paris with an intimate crew… Is there a favorite moment or photograph from your wedding?
HM: It was so magical! My favorite part was that the week just felt natural. Besides the big vendors, we didn’t have many things set in stone - so a random walk to the Parisian flower market for my bouquet or a spontaneous family bike ride just all combined into happy unexpected moments.
Tumblr media
TSG: You’ve obviously mastered the effortless, authentic vibe in couple + wedding photography - what are your top tips for couples planning their engagement photography?
HM:
1. Hire an amazing planner. Even if you think you can do it on your own.
2. Don’t incorporate things just because they are “traditional.” If doing a garter toss feels weird to you, skip that! Your guests can tell when it feels forced!
3. Once the day arrives, commit to not sweating the small stuff. No one but you will know if that flower arrangement wasn’t supposed to have peonies. You (and everyone else) will have so much more fun!
Tumblr media
TSG: Not everyone is a natural in front of the camera, how do you help your couples achieve such genuine, beautiful moments?
HM: I would wager to say most people are uncomfortable at first! Make sure you find a photographer you connect with and I promise after 15 minutes you will actually start having fun! Also, a margarita. Always.
TSG: We’ve been anti-prom poses since we were 16, but you somehow make it look non-cringy. How?!
HM: Haha! It’s all about the right angles. Shooting from straight on either looks like you’re 18 and should be wearing a corsage… or you’re announcing a pregnancy.
Tumblr media
TSG: Do you have any favorite spots to shoot around Austin? What should couples consider when choosing their location?
HM: Aren’t we just so lucky in Austin!? I love Laguna Gloria, Hotel Ella, Zilker, but also spend a lot of shoots at client’s ranches and homes! I always help clients pick somewhere they feel a connection to so the shoot doesn’t feel random. Also, the fewer people looking on, the better!
Tumblr media
TSG: What about choosing outfits? Do you have any recommendations for your couples when it comes to styling?
HM: Wear the clothes you enjoy most! I’d rather you have a picture in your living room wearing something that feels like “you” than a random cocktail dress.
TSG: You’ve got a full schedule this year! Where will you be traveling and shooting in 2020?
HM: I just got back from shooting the most fun Spring Catalog in New Orleans and will be heading to Colorado, Mexico, and  Florida in the upcoming months. Also, this just in, I’m opening up 3 more spots for 2020!!

Wellness Wednesday with Rejuvenate Austin
Tumblr media
Dr. Jessica Wright, photography by Paige Newton
While January may come with extra emphasis on wellness - #DryJanuary, #NewYearNewMe - we’re looking to carry our initial New Year enthusiasm with us through the entire year (and decade!). We sat down with a few of our Volume 7 experts to talk about their approaches to health + wellness.
Meet Dr. Jessica Wright, owner of Rejuvenate Austin and the Volume 7 member who keeps us young - or at least looking like it! Dr. Wright began her career as a trauma surgeon in Baton Rouge, which paved the way and laid the foundation for her success in aesthetics. While we had many questions for the fabulous Dr. Wright, we wanted to start off the new decade by talking about the treatments she recommends for patients at every decade.
Tumblr media
TSG: First things first, what made you make the transition from trauma surgery to aesthetics?
Dr. W: I began to consider transitioning away from trauma surgery because of the demanding lifestyle. I’d also recently gotten engaged and was looking forward to one day starting a family! And finally, I had just switched to wound care in the trauma unit and, to be honest, I didn’t feel passionate about what I was doing. A dear friend of mine invited me to come work with him in aesthetics and I fell in love. Aesthetics offered the perfect balance and allowed me to use my medical expertise to empower patients.
TSG: What has the transition been like? What aspects of your work as a trauma surgeon have translated to your practice at Rejuvenate Austin?
Dr. W: The combination of owning a business, parenting, and marriage can be stressful, so when life gets hectic, I am able to detach a bit - a skill I quickly learned in trauma surgery. In the midst of a stressful day, I can continue to treat my patients as if there was nothing else in the world going on. I am also very confident in my ability to safely and effectively treat patients because of my medical background. Knowing anatomy is a crucial part of both my job in trauma surgery and in aesthetics today. Ultimately I’m very grateful for the transition in that my day-to-day is calm. I get to go home to my family, sleep well and enjoy a 9-6PM job. I’m not answering pagers in the middle of the night, so no matter the hustle or frustration of my day, I am always grateful for this new role. I’ve been on the other side and I don’t take it for granted!
TSG: Congratulations on opening a new location Rejuvenate Austin practice! What can we expect from your downtown location?
Dr. W: Customers can expect an expansion of services! We plan to bring in even more cutting edge technology in 2020, as well as continuing to refine our skills in our current services. We are also expanding the Rejuvenate family/staff members and ensuring they are a perfect fit! And with more treatment rooms, we will be able to expand our availability. Plus, we are in such a fun neighborhood! Go hang at Better Half for a cocktail after your treatment!
TSG: What should potential clients take into consideration when choosing a procedure and a Med Spa?
Dr. W: First things first, you should always talk to a medical professional (a doctor, a nurse, or physician’s assistant). You want to make sure the treatment you have in mind is low-risk and high-gain, as well as understand what a good “before and after’’ are and your final results. There is no reason to take BIG risks for a “good before and after.”
When choosing a Medical Spa, make sure a doctor and the owner + operator are on-site. If a physician is not present, you are taking an additional risk - and there is no reason to take additional risks in this life. Complications can happen and the ability to enact treatment the second a complication arises is much better than being diagnosed after the fact and treated days later. You also want to find a Med Spa that has a “good vibe” and where the employees look good to you. If you walk in and all the employees have an aesthetic that doesn’t align with what you are looking for, then that Med Spa is probably not a good fit. If you want a natural, ‘done’ look than Rejuvenate is your Med Spa.
TSG: Are there certain times you should or should not get treatments? For example, we know the results of cool sculpting take 2-3 months to develop, so we should be thinking about it ahead of Spring and Summer…
Dr. W: Absolutely! With Coolsculpting, you need at least 8 weeks to get results. If you’re thinking about it for Spring Break, then you should schedule the treatment in December or January at the latest. With laser treatments, you need to restrict sun exposure before and after your laser treatments. For example, if you’re thinking about tackling brown and red pigment on your face, the treatment should be done in the wintertime. In fact, most laser treatments should be done in the winter. Your stage of life should also be taken into consideration. If you’re pregnant or breast-feeding, we suggest you take a break from all aesthetics. And be cognizant of healing - if you just had surgery, you should allow your body to have all the energy to heal where it needs to heal rather than be using energy to stimulate collagen. These are all judgment calls best left to medical professionals!
Tumblr media
TSG: Rejuvenate Austin offers a wide variety of treatments - from injectables to cool sculpting to laser treatments - is there one that’s more popular than another?
Dr. W: Botox is hands down our most popular treatment! Everyone is getting Botox - young and old, women and men, preventative and reactive. It’s very popular with all generations! People are also thinking about collagen stimulants, laser treatments and Coolsculpting treatments.
TSG: You also offer amazing skincare products - do you have any current favorites for winter weather?
Dr. W: For Winter weather, I love Senté Dermal Repair because it is a moisturizer that trains your skin to hold onto moisture. This product actually repairs your skin’s ability to moisturize your skin from the inside out, instead of putting a greasy moisturizer on your skin.
TSG: What treatments should women in their twenties, thirties, forties and fifties be considering?
Dr. W:
Twenties - In your twenties, you should consider micro-needling, because at this age you have an amazing ability to create collagen. It delivers big results and helps with anti-aging.
Thirties - During the late twenties, early thirties are when most people start Botox, so at this point, you should probably consider it. In your thirties, you can also consider IPL Photofacials to help with pigments and redness.
Forties -  Your forties are a great time to start Ultherapy, laser resurfacing, Botox, Fillers, IPL Photofacial - hit it hard! You still have the ability to make collagen, but your rate of aging is starting to speed up.
Fifties - In your fifties, you should consider the same treatments from your forties and add in laser resurfacing.
Sixties - In your sixties, continue all of the avenues to stimulate collagen and maybe schedule your facelift with your plastic surgeon ;)
TSG: Speaking of your treatments, what was the motivation and inspiration behind your sexual wellness offerings?
Dr. W: I wasn’t interested in sexual wellness until I hired our Physicians Assistant, Dana Kirk, who is nationally certified in the O-Shot and P-Shot. She educated me on this! At first, we started offering the O-Shot and P-Shot, and I had so many patients with life-changing experiences. It’s a low-risk service with a high return. After I had children, I too, understood the struggles of post-pregnancy changes. After success with the O-Shot and P-Shot, we introduced the Juliet Laser, which is also used for facial rejuvenation. Ultimately, my goal is to treat insecurities - at Rejuvenate, we can help customers directly assess and change these, which has far-reaching results in their life.
TSG: Are there any misconceptions or taboos around aesthetics that you’d like to address and set the record straight on?
Dr. W: YES! One thing I hear is “my husband is super worried that I will come back and look crazy!” This is misinformation. This is completely in the hands of the injector. We ensure that you could do everything offered on our menu of treatments and still look natural because we have invested in good lasers, good technologies, good product and a staff well-educated in natural results. Men often think of this whole industry as just for women -- but no, it is for everyone! Everyone looks better rejuvenated as opposed to au-natural.

Wellness Wednesday with Jackman Eye
Tumblr media
While January may come with extra emphasis on wellness - #DryJanuary, #NewYearNewMe - we’re looking to carry our initial New Year enthusiasm with us through the entire year (and decade!). So, we sat down with a few of our Volume 7 experts to talk about their approaches to health + wellness.
Next up in our series is Dr. Madison Huser of Jackman Eye, the Rosedale optometry practice located on 39th street with lots of parking (oh, the things we get excited about these days…). A graduate of the University of Texas, Dr. Huser is a huge Longhorn fan - a love that her husband and two daughters also share. When she’s not caring for the eyesight of Austinites, she’s at home in Dripping Springs or enjoying the great outdoors with a jog around Townlake. With the start of a new year, we talked to her about eyesight + eye health that will have all of us heading into 2020 with 20/20 vision (pun very much intended)!
TSG: Happy New Year + Cedar Season! Do you have any secrets for tackling itchy eyes during Austin’s notorious allergy seasons? Dr. Huser: Happy New Year to you, TSG! Optometrists have been waiting for the year 2020 for a long time, so get ready for a year full of vision-related puns! But, 2020 has also been a rough start for cedar sufferers, including myself! For relief, I turn to my favorite over the counter antihistamine eye drops, Zaditor and Alaway. I also like using cold artificial tears like Refresh Optive or Blink to dilute and rinse out allergens. To address swelling around the eyes, cold compresses do the trick! And for red eyes, I use a new over-the-counter eye drop called Lumify. It makes your eyes look whiter, so you can look more presentable for work or special occasions! If this doesn’t alleviate your itchy eyes, a stronger prescription antihistamine or steroid eye drop is required. Hopefully oak season is kinder to us!
TSG: What about year-round… How can we take care of our eyes + eyesight daily? Dr. Huser: An easy way to incorporate at home eye care into your daily routine is to clean your eyelids properly.  It may sound really gross, but small mites can sometimes live on our eyelashes causing red, itchy eyes.  The glands that keep our eyes lubricated also can become clogged and lead to styes and dry eyes.  I recommend the We Love Eyes product line.  They have many great products for men and women that are vegan, cruelty, gluten and paraben-free.  I use the Tea Tree makeup removing oil and foaming cleanser after washing my face at night.  They use tea tree oil, jojoba oil and grapeseed oil to naturally kill bacteria, improve inflammation and keep pores clean.
Tumblr media
TSG: Speaking of year-round, how often should we visit the optometrist? Does it vary depending on one’s quality of vision? Dr. Huser: Annual eye exams are recommended regardless of age or quality of vision. On the younger side, children often do not know what their vision is supposed to look like and school screenings do not check the health of the eyes.  A comprehensive exam also checks for eye alignment or focusing disorders that can lead to learning difficulties.   Yearly eye exams are especially important over 40 to identify age-related eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.  Even those lucky enough to not need prescription eyewear should take a proactive approach to their eye health.  Early detection is key to preventing vision loss because many visually devastating eye diseases do not have any symptoms!
TSG: And for those who are familiar with the optometrist but are looking to trade in their frames or contact lenses - how do they know if they’re a good candidate for Lasik? Dr. Huser: Lasik is a great way to become independent from glasses and contacts - an enticing thing for a city of active people.  The best way to determine if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation to speak to a doctor about your options.  An ideal candidate has had a stable prescription for several years, their prescription falls within certain limits and overall has healthy eyes.
TSG: We love your holistic approach to eye health - what are the most important lifestyle habits you suggest for promoting eye health? Dr. Huser: I love this question! The eye may or may not be the window to the soul, but it is definitely the window to your overall health.  The way eyes reflect and indicate health is one of the reasons I became interested in optometry. Changes in the eyes can indicate high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune disease. Many of the same activities that promote overall health also are good for our eyes.  A few of the most important activities are eating healthy, exercising, sleeping well, taking breaks with device use, quit smoking and protecting your eyes from the sun.
TSG: Are there any lifestyle habits we should avoid? Dr. Huser: Smoking! I know that it’s an obvious answer, but smoking increases the risk of developing blinding eye diseases and causes uncomfortable dry eyes.
TSG: What about dietary tips, tricks and recipes for eye-health, we loved your Strawberry Green Smoothie! Dr. Huser: Try to incorporate omega 3 fatty acids, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E and vitamin C These nutrients protect against eye disease and improve quality of vision. P.S. you can get these in fish, leafy veggies, nuts and veggies like broccoli and brussel sprouts, respectively!

TSG: It doesn’t seem like screen-time will become any less ubiquitous in 2020, are there ways to lessen the negative impact of staring at a screen all day? How do we know if our screentime is affecting our eyesight? Dr. Huser: You may have heard of the popular 20/20/20 rule.  Optometrists recommend taking breaks from your screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds by looking at something over 20 feet away.  When we do any focused work or screen time we rarely blink causing our eyes not produce tears and become drier.  The distance at which we hold screens also is very tiring to our eyes.  The closer our working material, the harder it is for our eyes to stay in the right alignment.  Screen-time may be affecting your eyesight if you are getting headaches especially over the eyes, neck or shoulder tension or have burning or watering of your eyes.
TSG: Should we all be wearing blue light frames? Dr. Huser: The answer is maybe… The evidence that blue light disrupts our sleep cycles is very strong.  If you work on a computer, check your phone or watch TV 1-2 hours before bed blue light glasses are beneficial for improving sleep.  There is also some evidence that blue light glasses protect the delicate cells inside the eye and improve comfort at the computer, but these benefits are less studied.
TSG: Speaking of frames, you carry quite a few at Jackman Eye - do you have any favorites for 2020? Dr. Huser: Our newest line, Etnia Barcelona, is a favorite of mine.  Their newest campaign focuses on the importance of unique over perfect.  They use David Bowie as a representation of this value and even have frames designed in his memory.   Drawing inspiration from art and photography allows them to design frames that function well and are fashion-forward.  They have fun colors and styles that feel very wearable for everyday life.  I have already purchased two pairs for myself!
Make sure to take Dr. Huser’s advice and schedule an eye exam at Jackman Eye to help start you 2020 with 20/20 vision!

Volume 7 Designers on Pantone’s Color of the Year
Happy 2020, Year of the Rat and - at least for Pantone - Year of “Classic Blue.” Touted as a color instilling calm, confidence and connection, Pantone introduced PANTONE 19-4052 as the embodiment of their hope for this new era. But do designers have hope for this so-called “restful color?” We polled our Volume 7 design experts on their reactions to the announcement, as well as how they will (or will not) be incorporating the color in their 2020 design projects.

DUNN & HALL
“We’ve actually already incorporated slightly similar shades of blue in recent projects. For example, in designing a client’s kitchen we added blue in neutral areas to add interest and character. The result was a blue island accented with bistro-style barstools.”
“At Dunn & Hall, we enjoy adding pops of color in small, yet impactful ways. Accessorizing with Pantone’s Classic Blue will be impactful in freshening up one’s home! We recommend accessories like glassware, objects, candlesticks or throws!”

PAGE HOME DESIGN
“Classic Blue has a timelessness that attracts many designers. Rooms we designed years ago in this hue remain current and beautiful!”
“One way I’m using Classic Blue is on walls and woodwork. Painting the moldings and walls the same color can have a powerful and calming effect, similar to blue in nature - in the same way bright blue skies typically evoke serenity while raging ocean waters depict a commanding intensity. I recently used a similar shade in a bedroom, because blue creates an inviting haven of refuge that cradles you with its embracing cocoon.” - Suzie Page | Page Home Design

AUSTIN DESIGN HOUSE
“We at Austin Design House think it’s more than just a color of the year - it’s truly a classic that is here to stay!”
“We love using ‘Classic Blue’ in our design projects. It goes with so many existing color palettes and brings a fresh element to our client’s homes. Fabrics and accessories are a great opportunity to bring in touches of Pantone’s Color of the Year.”
Shop Austin Design House’s favorite Classic Blue pieces online (like this chinoiserie candle, blue + white ginger jar and blue bowl) or at their West Lynn brick + mortar Friday and Saturday 10-4 or by appointment.
THE IDENTITÉ COLLECTIVE
“I’m really loving Classic Blue in vintage rugs. The rug in my living room is from The Southern Loom and adds the perfect punch of color in an otherwise entirely neutral space. I think the key to using a “trending” color is to use it in classic materials (in my case, a handwoven wool rug), and limiting it to one or two places.”
“I think the places you’ll see the most Classic Blue this year will be in laundry rooms and bathrooms. It will be beautiful as cabinetry or as a patterned floor tile. If you’re wanting to incorporate Classic Blue but don’t want it to feel overwhelming or too coastal, I love the idea of using it in a powder bath. It will be contained, make a major statement and doesn’t need to coordinate with the rest of the house.” - Anastasia Casey | The Identité Collective

Wellness Wednesday with Smile 360
Tumblr media
While January may come with extra emphasis on wellness - #DryJanuary, #NewYearNewMe - we’re looking to carry our initial New Year enthusiasm with us through the entire year (and decade!). So, we sat down with a few of our Volume 7 experts to talk about their approaches to health + wellness.
In this installment of Wellness Wednesday, we caught up with Dr. Vincent Ip, Founder of Smile 360 dental practice. He’s about as authentically Austin as you can get. Burnt orange runs through his veins and he can often be found at Darrell K Royal stadium watching his alma mater. He’s a father of 3 adorable kiddos and is involved with their volunteer days and team sports. He’s a lover of the Austin culture and has invested in one of our favorite spots, Better Half Coffee & Cocktails. Last but not least, his amazing wife, Lindsey, can be found behind the scenes at their dental practice - it’s a full-blown family affair and we love it! We stopped by Smile 360’s office (in Zilker, minutes from their home!) and talked all about his eco-friendly practice and got the skinny on things we’ve always been curious about, like the best toothbrush on the market.
TSG: Happy New Year! We want to dive right in and talk about a topic that’s a high priority at your practice, dentistry + sleep. We had no idea these were interconnected, how can our teeth affect our sleep? Are there any indicators that we should be looking for? Dr. Ip: This has become a total passion project for me! I could talk about this for hours -- you might need to book a consult! Ha! In short, I suffer from a sleep disorder and so do two of my children. I sleep with an oral device that helps position my jaw in a place that helps me breathe better at night. Here are some indicators you might be a candidate for an Oral Sleep Appliance: snoring, sleep apnea, lack of concentration, allergies or sinus problems, chronic sickness or swollen tonsils, long face, memory/recall issues and dark circles. Your mouth is the opening to your entire body and oxygen is essential to your health. If you aren’t breathing well, you aren’t living well. If I can help people live better then that makes me happy.
TSG: What approaches do you take to help patients get better sleep? Dr. Ip: First, early intervention is key here -- if you have a child that snores, sleeps with their mouth open or displays any signs of ADD/ADHD then a good place to start is a sleep test. This can be done in your own home. There are devices that I can use to help change the facial growth pattern and development in children. Doing this early can eliminate them having issues later in life and most importantly, help them get better sleep which only makes them happier, more productive and easier to live with! For adults, if you suspect you have a sleep disorder then we start with a home sleep test. From there we can customize an oral device to help you get better sleep. Improving your oxygen also can dramatically affect your facial aesthetics and aging patterns -- we all want to slow down aging and feel better -- this is a big way to do it! There is so much more to this topic and I love talking about it with patients!
TSG: Aside from being diligent about visiting the dentist (we’ll touch on that in a second), are there any oral hygiene-related New Year resolutions you’d like to see Austinites achieve? Dr. Ip: This is easy - brush 2 minutes, 2 times a day. Brush your teeth in the morning for your friends and co-workers and at night for you. Also, don’t forget to floss!
TSG: Any advice for bad flossers? It’s so hard to remember this daily task! Dr. Ip: Get a pack of floss picks and leave them on the counter by your toothbrush -- floss picks are easier to handle than traditional floss. Doing something is better than nothing. Once you get started you will find yourself doing it more and more because it makes your teeth and gums so happy!
TSG: We’ve been seeing quite a few trendy, aesthetically oriented toothbrushes lately - are any worth the hype? What’s your go-to toothbrush? Dr. Ip: My wife actually wrote an essay on the ergonomics and aesthetics of toothbrushes to get into design school -- this was before we met -- I guess you could call it destiny. We do love a beautiful toothbrush. Her go-to is the Sonicare Diamond Clean and mine is the Burst!
TSG: And go-to toothpaste? Dr. Ip: I recommend anything with fluoride that has the ADA stamp of approval.
TSG: We know there are quite a few who are wary of the dentist, how does your practice approach this? Do you have any tips for overcoming a fear of the dentist? Dr. Ip: Our approach is simple: be kind. We’ve all fallen off track in life but the most important thing is just taking the first step to get back on track. My whole team is committed to kindness and taking great care of people. This is my number 1 priority!
Tumblr media
TSG: Can you tell us a little bit about the cosmetic side of your practice? Dr. Ip: When I was young I knocked my front two teeth out and so I understand how it feels to be self-conscious about your smile. Helping someone smile again is deeply personal to me. It’s the best feeling to have someone walk in my office not smiling and watch them leave just a few weeks later after a smile makeover smiling ear-to-ear -- talk about an immediate confidence booster. Going back to design and aesthetics - it’s all about focusing on each patient’s face shape, smile area, tooth shape and more to customize a smile. I work with an amazing master ceramist to personalize veneers for each patient. Cosmetics are fun because I get to really dig in on the technical side of dentistry and deliver something that will change a person’s life!
TSG: And the question we’re always wondering… What’s the best way to whiten your teeth? Dr. Ip: To be honest -- the best way to whiten your teeth is a professional dental cleaning at least 2 times a year. That is the only way to get the stains off your teeth. From there, using whitening toothpaste and whitening gel can only help them stay nice and bright white. But, your teeth need to start with a clean surface, if not, you’re just wasting resources trying to whiten over a dirty surface! Veneers are also a way to permanently ensure you always have bright white teeth!
TSG: Asking for a friend… They haven’t worn their retainer in years and now their teeth are starting to shift. If we (ahem, they) want to consider Invisalign, what are the ballpark costs and timeline? Dr. Ip: I see this a lot in my practice. You are not alone! Getting your teeth into proper alignment is not just cosmetic -- it’s really the best thing for your teeth long-term. Every patient is different but most of my cases are roughly 12 months of treatment. Cost also varies based on the complexity of the case -- a lot of people have insurance that can help and we also offer reasonable payment options. It’s important to me to make this attainable for everyone because it really can help you keep the teeth you were born with and those are the best ones to keep!
