Envi watched as Marco closed up the back of the truck.

“9:30 is good! I will see you then!”

They waved to the mailman before returning to their house. After shutting the door, the shapeshifter quietly celebrated the new friendship made.

“I can’t believe it! Not only did I talk to the mailed-man today, he is going to teach me about the video games!” This enthusiasm would follow them all afternoon.

As night drew over the town and the moon rose high into the starlit sky, Envi paced around their living room, peeking through the window now and again to see if Marco had returned.

Envi could hardly contain their excitement. They were going to learn something completely new and hang out with one of their neighbors at the same time! What a thrill! They were admittedly quite surprised by Marco’s kindness, even offering to pay for food.

“Oh! Are you sure? You are already inviting me to spend the time passing at your home. And that is plenty kind on its own. I do not want to impose.”

How generous of him! Though Envi did wonder how else they might express their appreciation for all of this. Well, they’d think on it for now; and maybe send the mailman something next week. For now, maybe a thank you would do. That was what humans normally said, right?

“Thank you so much for doing this, Mailed-Man. It means very much.”

That really surprised the man. Even if you never played the games, almost everyone knew Mario or Sonic or Kirby.

"Ah...well, they are just characters to the games.. If you want when im done with my route, you can come to my place, and I'll play a game for you, or you can try to play some"

Of course, he would be tuckered out and probably have to skip work the next day even though he really doesn't want to, but it has been awhile since he played a game or done anything for himself. So maybe hanging out with Envi wouldn't be that bad

At Marco’s offer, Envi’s face practically lit up. “Really??? That would be amazing!! Mailed-man, this is going to be so fun!” The shapeshifter was happy to accept the invitation.

“I cannot wait to learn about these video games. And meet the Mario; super as he may be, the Sonic and the Kirby. Oh! I know! Mailed-man Marco, do you like pizza? I could buy us a pizza! Would that be fair in exchange?”

Envi listened with interest as Marco talked about his friends. They wondered what it would be like to meet them. But that was not something they’d tackle any time soon. They were just glad to chat with Marco.

As the mailman listed off various video games, the shapeshifter’s expression became even more confused.

“I have not. The way you speak of the video games gives me the sense this is a common experience I have some-way missed. Who is this Mario and what makes him super? What are the Sonic and the Kirby?”

"You mean delievering mail?"

It was hard to understand Envi, at least to Marco, but he played it off as she wasn't from america and didn't speak english, so he didn't judge her on it.

He shrugged at the question. He never had time to do anything anymore except sleeping. But he didn't want to tell her that.

"I hang out with friends.. Play with my dog..Play video games.. I sometimes make origami and used to collect leafs..."

of course, he was saying some old hobbies he used to do and some rare things he sometimes does. He let out a weak chuckle as he shrugged

"That sorta it.. I know it sounds pretty boring... um..How about you?"

“Delivering the mail, yes.” Envi made a mental note of the proper term for the job.

They nodded along, even if they didn’t quite know what all of those hobbies were. It was interesting to them all the same.

“Oh! Friends! You are friends with the Streber and the Kevin, right? They seem nice.”

When Envi was asked about their own hobbies, they paused to think.

“The time passers I like…? Well, I like to go sightseeing; walk around the town. There are a lot of places to go here, and the people you meet are so interesting. It certainly lends aid to my studies of the anthropology. But I also like to listen to the musics when I’m at home.”

Envi’s curiosity brought them to revisit Marco’s hobbies with interest.

“Mailed-Man Marco, what are these video games you speak of?”

Envi smiled. “Oh good! I was hoping I could borrow a few of your minutes to get to know you better! Mayhaps the middle of your route is not the best time to have the chit-chat. But I’m glad at least for today, there is time.”

This was unfortunately as far as Envi had thought ahead. Human interactions and building friendships was unfortunately still a bit of an odd concept. Their smile faltered as they wracked their brain for things they’d heard other people say.

“So…” their hands fidgeted as they thought. “It is the Friday. Many people seem to get out and go places on this day. What do you like to do when you aren’t leaving the boxes and taking the signatures?”

Nailed it.

“Okay, I’ll give it a try. I’ll draw one of these… Amogus.”

They crouch down and start to draw.

“So the amogus… it is a bean with legs and accessories, yes? What a funny little creature! A pleasure to make your acquaintance, by the way.”

Envi noticed the little doodle in passing and couldn’t help but come take a closer look.
