I do tend to come down hard on Padme for being so chill about the tusken massacre but I’m kind of. Done with mocking her for naivety re: red flags for Anakin turning into a domestic abuser. Maybe it’s a symptom of my getting older that instead of judging her as a peer I look at her life and think: wow she’s young. And wow: she was not briefed. She went into politics at eleven, total workaholic, had one crush as a kid that got superseded by her career (…alright I’m realizing while writing this that I forgot Clovis but whatever clovis isn’t real and can’t hurt me). She had an extremely busy term as queen, fought in a war, all her girlfriends are actually her employees and secret service, then she was a senator, still a workaholic, her friends are still her employees, she hardly sees her family and has a dreamy idealized idea of their lives, and she definitely didn’t have time to read quotes from ‘why does he do that’ by ted bundy on tumblr.com. She goes into this romance, much like anakin does, as if she’s acting out a ya romance novel, and she’s keeping that secret locked down enough that she does not appear to have any sort of emotional support whatsoever by rots. her girls have evaporated, her family a distant dream. She may or may not have even seen an obgyn. I don’t know about you guys but I still have moments when a guy in my life does not pass peer review with my buddies and I’m like, really? But he’s nice! And I am older and I think I am significantly more prepared for those specific kinds of red flags than Padme was.

And to be fair, i guess I can see how someone might look at Anakin’s actions on tatooine and come to the incorrect conclusion that yes, he’s dangerous, but only to non-humans his enemies when someone he loves is hurt or in danger, right? He’s passionate, he’s protective! Doesn’t automatically follow, I suppose, that he would in fact turn that violence onto those very people he loves, too, including her and their children. She’s hardly the only person to mistake Anakin’s possessiveness for loyalty.

(What it says about her that she’s comfortable with his violence being directed where it was on tatooine even if it didn’t register as a red flag is… a whole other can of worms)
