A "styptic"?! Granted, I have no medical training, but I've never used that word before. But I figure Ikkaku has a lot of practical experience with blood and has probably also spent a lot of time at the 4th over the decades.

What's funny is that I did not initially read Ikkaku's lines as needing the word "styptic", so it felt a lot less erudite:

His line here is 血止めをしねえなら / 拭く意味はねえよ, which I'd translated as, "If you can't stop the bleeding, there's no point in wiping it away."

血 means "blood" and 止め means "stop" and the rest of that first line is the act of not doing something. It's a versatile construction you can use to do/use/have/make a noun or turn a noun into a verb, so I was like sure, let's [not] do a "bleeding stop."

But it turns out that if you look up 血止め, you do get "styptic," which is a word the English language has. If you Google it, you mostly get chidome bands, which are used to restrict blood flow to your lower legs, like compression socks. But you also get chidomegusa (blood-stop grass), which is probably what Ikkaku is using. The more you know! 🌈

Anyway, "Wiping it away is a poor remedy. Better to apply a styptic" sounds so posh. "A poor remedy"? "Better to apply"? A STYPTIC? I mean, as posh as you can sound when talking about bleeding everywhere. I kind of love the idea that maybe he's paraphrasing someone at the 4th--someone who'd use the word "styptic" on the daily. Either someone who's attended him, or maybe even someone he sought out to supply him with his styptic. Like, I feel like Iemura would say some shit like that.

MAYBE IKKAKU AND IEMURA MET EACH OTHER AT THE THIRD-SEAT HOLIDAY MIXER. Iemura tried to get Ikkaku to join the Shinigami Men's Society, so the org would have some real street cred, but Ikkaku said he "didn't have time" (had to go do mani pedis with his boyfriend, Yumichika). Ikkaku still got a scrip for styptic out of the interaction, though.

(Option 2 is that Ikkaku learned about styptic from Zaraki, who learned about it from Unohana. You know, back in the day. Zaraki being all about the styptic and sharing this knowledge around to the whole division would track with his meticulousness about his hair products, honestly!)

Soi Fon ends the manga the way she's occupied it throughout: being an amazingly under-the-radar superstar. She has a mole in Squad 12! That's really impressive considering how equally morally depraved loyal Mayuri's subordinates tend to be.

Also, she shows up here with Byakuya...more grist for the idea Byakuya and Soi Fon, while maybe not exactly friends, are on a very similar wavelength when it comes to their duties as captains, and have a very high level of trust in one another.

I know for a fact that the voice messages Akon has from the R&D guys are insane.

Rin probably has a panic attack waiting in Akon’s inbox if he takes too long on a smoke break. And they’re all followed by a request for him to bring back candy from the vending machine so Akon always changes it to transcript so he can just read through it.

Hiyosu is using that thing like a notes app while there is continuous, unrestrained screaming and suffering in the background (whether by staff or cadaver is unknown). (Partly so Akon has to listen to it because the screams fuck up the transcription tech)

Mayuri is just constantly flooding that thing with write ups for anyone who dare fuck up a running project Mayuri decided to pick up for himself and nitpicking bullshit that lesser men would smash their phone over.

I voted that I dislike the ending and don't find it narratively fulfilling if we're going to take into account fulfillment for the main gang as a whole. HOWEVER.

However, I will say that Ichigo and Rukia did end on a good note.

Ichigo in particular being a dad with his dream job, living his life in Karakura town, having a fun day with his pals juxtaposed not just to Yhwach but to the love of my life who I never shut the fuck up about, Soul King.

Because that could've been him! If Ichigo hadn't accepted himself--the human, the quincy, the hollow, the fullbringer--then he ran the risk of being the new Soul King. A husk with its limbs severed and vying for identity, for meaning.

And even moreso if he hadn't made true bonds with his friends, and opened himself up to be seen and helped by them. Yhwach certainly didn't trust anyone like that, he just used people. And further, the Soul King doesn't have anyone but himself and his disconnected parts.

If Ichigo hadn't allowed Orihime, Chad, Uryu, and Rukia's voices to reach him throughout the arcs, not only would the Soul Society have not deemed him an ally, but he would have been alone. He would have to be his own ally against not just Aizen or Ginjo or Yhwach, but against the Soul Society--Yamamoto and Ichibe--who were weighing his worth the entire time. And the manga always made it pretty clear that Ichigo failed on his own. He let the parts of himself take over, on his own.

Instead of being a new lynchpin, instead of lording over the worlds of life and death, Ichigo is sitting down to watch and support Chad with the rest of their friends, with his family. He saved Soul Society for this. He saved the world for this. So he could grocery shop and study and host parties at his house.

He isn't trapped by death. He isn't powerless as he watches death lingering in the corner of his eye as he was in the beginning. He knows what it is now, he's saved it and made sure the cycle will continue, because without it, he and his life wouldn't exist. He would be stagnant and trapped. He would be the Soul King.

There is no strawberry without death!

And I know Rukia's arc comes off badly to some people, but I also think she got a good ending. Her struggle of not being able to live with herself, to being unable to deal with the death inherent in the afterlife and in her job, was resolved nicely.

She starts off disjointed from those in her life--Byakuya, Renji, and even her captain and division and the Gotei 13 at large--because she doesn't feel adequate or even that she's allowed to live after her failure to save Kaien or keep ahold of Renji or connect in the least with Byakuya. But she too lets people in. She builds bonds with Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, and even Uryu. And when they come to save her, she is confronted by and benefits greatly from the bonds she's experienced in death--that she was tethering herself from.

And she ends the story, after realizing her potential, and bridging the gaps between herself and the people she cares about. She reconnects with Renji so hard they get married! Her brother cares about her so much that he begs Ichigo to save Soul Society and tells her she did well (amazing coming from him, that) and she in turn FEELS that care.

She reconnects with her division so well that she's the captain now! She isn't just allowed to exist, she has a place and a purpose and the will to really live that existence now. She takes the lessons Kaien gave and she uses them, instead of despairing that it was too little too late to do so. She has so many beating hearts at her grasp, it was never too late, she stepped out of the frozen circle and walked on into that great goodnight.

Specifically this is about everything after the 10 year time skip, and includes the ending for all of the characters but especially the main characters (Ichigo, Uryu, Chad, Orihime, Rukia, and Renji). This is not just about ships, it’s about where the characters ended up. I want to know what people think about the ending as a whole.
