Drabble Prompts

Character Driven

Unearth your character’s roots. What is the character’s ancestry or cultural background? How does ancestry shape your character? Is the character at odds with family traditions?

Write a series of short paragraphical biographies of each of the character’s closest family members: spouse, children, parents, grandparents, siblings, close friends, etc.

Write a monologue in which your character summarizes his or her life story; be sure to write it in the character’s voice.

What motivates your character? Money? Love? Truth? Power? Justice?

What does your character want more than anything else in the world? What is he or she searching for?

What other characters or events are interfering with your character’s goals? What obstacles are in the way?

Situation Driven

Your character is being chased by a villain or villainous group through an abandoned warehouse. Describe their fear and lucky escape.

Your character arrives late to a party, not knowing that an old significant other is attending too. The relationship didn’t end well. The host introduces them to each other, unaware of their history. 

Your character (a celebrity) is giving a long speech when they are interrupted by a member of the audience and heckled. Your character loses their calm and responds to the heckler in far more informal speech.

Imagine your character has gone hiking in a forest on a mountainside. There is nobody else around. Describe what they hear as they pass through different parts – a densely wooded area, a stream, and a high ravine.

Begin a drabble with the words ‘If I’d known then what I know now, I never would have…’

Connection Ideas

Sometimes, we struggle to think of connections with members. If you are having a difficult time, check out these ideas.

The paparazzi is everywhere. What did they catch us doing when we thought no one was watching? 

We used to date but now, we’re trying to ruin each other’s careers. Who will succeed first?

We saw something one night, and our friendship has never been the same. We want it to be, but things have changed. 

We’re always feuding on social media, but we’ve never met in person. What will it be like when we meet face to face? 

We’re obsessed with fame, and it’s even better together. The cameras love us, but what happens when we’re out of the public eye? Is our friendship even real? 

We both wanted to be famous so badly, and then we were. We did something criminal to get us here, but if one of us tell, both of us are busted.
