Adrian Peterson avoids jail time with plea agreement
Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson avoided jail time on Tuesday in a plea agreement reached with prosecutors to resolve his child abuse case.
Peterson pleaded no contest to a reckless assault charge — a Class A misdemeanor — before Judge Kelly Case Tuesday afternoon in a Montgomery County (Texas) courtroom. Case allowed that he will defer judgement for a two-year period, Peterson will be fined $4,000. Peterson will also have to complete 80 hours of community service.
Peterson was indicted in September on a felony charge of injury to a child for using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son earlier this year in suburban Houston. The All-Pro running back says he never intended to harm his son and was disciplining him in the same way he had been as a child growing up in East Texas.
The boy suffered cuts, marks and bruising to his thighs, back and on one of his testicles, according to court records.
The case revived a debate about corporal punishment, which is on the decline in the U.S. but still widely practiced in homes and schools.
A tentative trial date of Dec. 1 had been set in Peterson’s case.
Peterson has been on paid leave from the Vikings under a special exemption from the NFL commissioner to take care of his legal problems. It was not immediately clear how the plea deal would affect his playing status.
“As we have stated previously, we will make a determination on his status after we have the facts,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a press release. “He is on the commissioner-exempt list with pay until the criminal charges pending against him are adjudicated.”
“We will review the court documents. We cannot speculate on a timetable for a decision.” McCarthy added.
Last month, a visiting judge denied a request by prosecutors to remove Case as judge in the case. Prosecutors had accused Case of being biased against them and wanted a new judge appointed.
The plea deal also makes a pending motion by prosecutors to revoke Peterson’s $15,000 bond for alleged marijuana use nonexistent.
Corporal punishment is legal in every state. The Texas Attorney General’s Office notes that belts and brushes “are accepted by many as legitimate disciplinary ‘tools,’” but “electrical or phone cords, boards, yardsticks, ropes, shoes, and wires are likely to be considered instruments of abuse.”
Texas law says the use of non-deadly force against someone younger than 18 is justified if a parent or guardian “reasonably believes the force is necessary to discipline the child or to safeguard or promote his welfare.”

From the moment the Minnesota Vikings traded back into the first round to take Teddy Bridgewater, it was only a matter of time before he took over as the team’s starting quarterback.
When Bridgewater makes his first start on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, he will be in line for something even bigger — the new face of the franchise.
With Adrian Peterson away from the team while he faces child abuse charges, the Vikings are searching for a new identity while the chaos from Peterson’s legal troubles and injuries to several high-profile players threaten to derail the team less than a month into the season.
In steps Bridgewater, the unflappable rookie, and all he has to do is pull the Vikings out of a spiral and step into the void left by Peterson’s departure.
With quarterback Matt Cassel lost for the season with a foot injury and Peterson out indefinitely while the legal process plays out, the Vikings have become Bridgewater’s team much faster than anyone expected.
The Vikings traded back into the first round on the opening night of the draft to snag Bridgewater in hopes that he could finally become the long-term answer at quarterback the team has been searching for ever since Daunte Culpepper went down with a knee injury in 2005.
Peterson was expected to continue to be the team’s star player for at least another season or two, providing a cocoon for the young quarterback while he got his feet underneath him. That all changed two weeks ago with Peterson’s stunning arrest in a child-abuse charge in Texas.
The Vikings started the season with the veteran Cassel, hoping to ease Bridgewater’s transition and give him some time to get acclimated to NFL life. But that all changed last week when Cassel went down.
Bridgewater stepped in for the injured Cassel on Sunday and completed 12 of 20 passes for 150 yards against a New Orleans defense that played the pass very aggressively with Peterson gone. The offense didn’t score a touchdown with him in the game, but his ability to handle the heat carried over from his turns in the huddle during the preseason.
When Bridgewater takes the field for his first game as a starter on Sunday against Atlanta, he won’t have Peterson to take his handoffs. He won’t have tight end Kyle Rudolph, who will miss about six weeks after having sports hernia surgery, to catch his passes and he won’t have starting right guard Brandon Fusco, who is out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle, to block for him.
He also won’t have a big entourage in the stands. Bridgewater said earlier this season — while he was still Cassel’s backup — he put six people, including his mother, girlfriend and agent, on a list to watch the game. Now that he’s starting, he said “that number hasn’t changed.”

VIKINGS DL LINVAL JOSEPH SHOT IN LEG AT NIGHTCLUB FOLLOWING GAME Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Linval Joseph was shot in the calf while at a Minneapolis nightclub following Friday’s preseason game. According to a release from the team, Joseph was an innocent bystander when he was struck by a stray bullet.  "Josesph was an innocent bystander to the shooting that took place at the 400 SoundBar in downtown Minneapolis," the Vikings said in a statement. "Linval suffered a minor injury during the shooting when a stray bullet struck his calf. He was immediately taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injury and released. He is expected to return to his coaches and teammates this week. "The entire Vikings organization is extremely thankful that Linval was not seriously hurt, and our thoughts are with all of the victims of this shooting. The team will defer any further comment to the Minneapolis Police Department during its ongoing investigation." According to ESPN.com, Joseph isn’t expected to miss much time and could return to action in the next two weeks. Joseph played nine snaps in the preseason opener and is the Vikings’ starting nose tackle. He signed a five-year, $31.25 million deal in March after spending the first four years of his career with the Giants. (Bruce Kluckhohn/USA TODAY Sports)
