These are photos of the three sets on videos I had made for my final work. I find it interesting that the material of the bowls (wax) has changed the quality of the animations and has caused them to seem as if they’re being shown from the bowls instead of the projector. The bowls illuminate from the projection which makes it hypnotizing to watch. In future works this could be an interesting combination to play with. How the result of a projection onto wax can illuminate and emphasize a work...

My final work for 2018 sculpture
4 wax bowls (time made), a used table runner (time used), cutlery for each bowl and animations/videos (endless time) projected on bowls.
[I have spent the time making these bowls. The runner has had time being used as it is. The animation are digital which in some way can be seen as infinite.]
For my final work I wanted to physically create a space that suggests a TV dinner or a homely setting. I initially wanted to have the same set up but on a table, where the projection is coming from above. I felt as if this would have made the work a little more interesting and interactive. As time went by I didn’t feel as if I could pull it off as well as I would have wanted to so I decided to lay it out on the wall.
The projected videos are a collection a things I’ve either found on the internet or have collages into animations. They all have some sort of connection to the ideas behind this work and I’ve placed them in the bowls to act as the food (necessity). Based on ideas of comfortability, sharing, boundaries of public and private and how you make connections with others.
I intended to make a space that reflects the sharing /connecting atmosphere of sitting at the table with loved ones and wanted to explore the extent of a persons/peoples connection to a stranger. How much are you willing to share with someone? Would you invite them into your home? To dinner? To connect?

This is my final animation that I presented for critiques. I wanted it to feel like a TV dinner. I incorporated different areas in East Auckland that I’m familiar with and which I feel are comfortable spaces for me.
I wanted to play with the idea of the human desire to connect in relation to sharing. Who do you feel comfortable sharing with? Playing with that by putting the dinner table in random and various locations and including aspects that are seen in the process of sharing in space.

29/09/18 Testing the waters of the specific layout of my final animation. Placing my dining table in a familiar/public space combining with kiwi advertising all to make an animation that’s based on ideas of comfortability of space, public and private, sharing, connecting.

28/09/18 I found that the problem with making these animation is making sure that the green screens that I choose are good quality otherwise the green screen (seen here) will ruin the whole illusion of the animation seeming to be real.

The sign is titled “Live in Style” which was something I thought was kind of strange. Relating style to a empty patch of land? Weird. So I wanted to make it weirder.

The start of understanding animation. A small frame animation I’ve made with multiple photos of a space and the same shape tool on photoshop.

Critiques
I don’t think that the critiques today was as helpful as I thought they would be. It made me rethink my work and ask if it’s interesting enough for others. I think that with the table, the movement of my projection maybe threw them off and the same with the bowls by the fact that they’re just, bowls. It was disappointing I’ll be honest, it made me think that I don’t actually reach perfection in my work as if they stay unfinished or unresolved. I did gain a good sense of what a real critique is like and the sort of language and possible things to look for. I’m still happy with what I’ve shown and realize where I could’ve gone better.

This is the finished result of the studio table. It was difficult to make the projection line up correctly with the tables bumps and curves. The videos movement makes it uneasy hopefully it bothers the viewer as much as it does me because it just won’t line up.
Why the studio table?
Because I felt that there’s a lot of energy and activity surrounding this table and space. Thought it would be an interesting moment in time to capture because the contents on the table are constantly changing. Bringing it to life with the projection. Showing some movement just extends the documentation moment. Also during the process of editing I became a little obsessed with the way the scanner picks up colour and makes it it’s own by making it a digital object.

This is the end product of the studio table. The legs were turned to the side (balance at its best) to destract the viewer from seeing them as just a support system.

At first I imagined the setup to just be the bowls in a high stack but plans quickly changed😂 when I set the bowls up a few moments later they tumbled and broke. I realized that they don’t have to be perfect and that wax bowl will break differently just like how each person will use a bowl to their own liking. Nothing but the object is the same.

16 bowls made in total (including the slip bowl).
With not enough time to make more I didn’t feel as confident in the amount of bowls I was able to make. I guess I wanted the end product to reflect the amount of work I felt I put into it. Happy I made more than 10 in the end but I would’ve liked to have made more.
