i think what i really love about them playing cards together and playing chess and shogi is how instead of trying to force each other to play by one thing, they try to combine them and let each other do what they prefer. i think it's very reflective of their friendship and the mutual respect they have despite their differences.

i want to buy the collection of unpublished lupin iii works solely because monkey punch drew a scene where jigen and goemon are playing a game of chess pieces vs shogi pieces on the same board and they end up getting into an argument because the game kinda makes no sense lol.

One of my favourite chapters in the original manga “The dream sequence” in which Lupin keeps having nightmares. Beautiful women who turn into skeletons and the idea of Jigen dying or betraying him.

I know the manga is not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ but consider that 90% of it is just a mad gag after another and right because Lupin IS a real bastard in it (albeit the parody of a real bastard ;) is very endearing to see that the thing that horrifies him the most is losing his best friend.

And Lupin ‘interacting’ with Monkey Punch is a lot of… things 🤣

URGENT UPDATE!

Due to the heavy rains in Gaza, many camps are experiencing flooding! To counter this, people have begun digging canals between the camps to try and keep the water away from the tents.

Unfortunately, there isn't much else we can do about this other than digging waterways. Wood is in limited supply and used mostly for cooking and boiling water so they can't build platforms for the tents.

Lupin Week Day 2: Roleswap

Today, I'm role swapping Lupin and Goemon, my two favorite characters !

This drawing is a redraw of a manga panel in the Goemon Series, where they are fighting cuz Lupin wants to steal from Goemon's master. This time it's the opposite happening however.

I kiiinda got super invested in them so I made a character sheet that shows their designs and fleshes out their character.

Obviously, Goemon takes Lupin's role. His family plays a bigger role in his life and unlike OG Goemon, has very little sense of morals- he steals whatever he wants and kills whoever gets in his way.

I still preserved his Japanese clothes because it's an essential part of Goemon, I used Lupin's kabuki outfit as a model. Despite this, he leans more towards western ideologies and tech more than OG Goe, using guns and various other tools for his heists. I personally think his family wouldn't approve of him straying away from their Japanese roots. (Oh yeah, he's Japanese/French, just like OG Lup

With Lupin, I didn't want to go with the obvious option of giving him Japanese clothing, since it'll be too similar to Goe. I first thought of making him more French and have him be a fencer but that just doesn't fit with Goemon's whole thing of being a ninja.

So I went with the ninja thing and tried to find something similar to it- and I made Lupin a pirate :) Hopefully it didn't look so obvious.

To match this, I changed his ethnicity to be half French and the other half be some sort of ASEAN/Pacific Islander. I made it vague like how OG Goe is with being half white. He also uses a harpoon and like, throws it to kill people yeah

So how did Goemon and Lupin meet in this story?

Lupin sails the sea with other people and they do whatever pirates do, and they find this really awesome treasure that Goemon takes notice of. When the crew docks in Japan, Goemon attempts to gain Lupin's trust because that way, he can infiltrate the ship and get that cool treasure.

Lupin is insistent on protecting the treasure however (because he'd probably get killed by his crew if he fails) and him and Goe fight fight fight!!! Much like Goemon in the original story where he leaves his master to join Lupin, Lupin just decides to leave his crew and join Goemon's gang after losing to him a bunch of times and having to endure the crew's abuse.

You know, there is something that confuses me a bit. Why didn't the team working on the pilot adapter manga Goemon during the time where he was Lupin's enemy? In the pilot Goemon wanted to kill Lupin, but unlike manga Goemon he wanted a fair fight. However, if manga Goemon was adapted the only thing that would truly change is that Goemon would be in the shadows attempting to sneak attack Lupin. So I wonder why the team didn't just stick with that instead of using a different character with a different name.

The team planning for the Pilot did not begin planning for Goemon when he was still an enemy to Lupin simply because they didn't think he would ever return. After the few chapters he gets he just disappears from the manga for a while, making it appear as if he was only meant to be a minor character. the aim of the pilot is to soley represent the main cast and what should be the status quo for them. notice how mp did stuff like an arc where lupin was a salesman, an arc where lupin is a college student, and an arc where lupin is a kid dealing with his family, but we don't see any of that in the pilot or even part 1. we don't see in the pilot or part 1 the idea that jigen could actually betray lupin, or fujiko appearing as a different character in each appearance, or even an instance like in one of the chapters where it ends with lupin going insane.

looking at the original manga, mp is very experimental and didn't bother with consistency. he simply wrote what would be most entertaining and then worried about establishing what would stay later. the team behind the pilot was very much against this, and wanted to establish as many concrete details for the anime as possible in sacrifice of accuracy to the manga, but considering how the lupin gang was only complete late into planning it seems they were too early to begin, and they sure weren't happy about having to change any details already decided on.

if it isn't clear, the planning going on was for more than just the pilot, it was for the entire anime and its episodes. adapting manga goemon in the pilot would have meant also having to plan him into the other, already worked on episodes, and unfortunately they didn't want that. their compromise does adapt from koroshi/danshiyaku, which i've heard was a very talked about character during the run of the manga similar to pycal or mamo, but personally i'm not happy with that lol
