Wallys IPQ6010 based series WAP support Captive portal
Accessing free WiFi in a hotel, bar, restaurant, shop, coach,or other public space is usually done in one of two ways.
Either you ask for the WiFi password and type it into your device, or you’re presented with a captive portal web page (also referred to as a splash page) before you gain access.
Well, this latter method of accessing the internet is known as captive portal WiFi.
But, what exactly is a captive portal?
Most businesses require a captive portal authentication before giving visitors restricted access to the broader internet or a network’s resources.
Usually, a captive portal will not allow internet access over open wifi unless you have entered your details into a  web-based form. Until this form has been completed, a user is classed as ‘captive’. Hence the name captive portal.
Of course, one of the main functions of a captive portal is to ensure access is restricted only to legitimate users. But it also plays an important role in capturing data, which can be used to create more meaningful user profiles which, in turn, can then inform future marketing plans.
Another term you may come across is ‘social WiFi’. This is because social media is now often used to access the internet via captive portal login, such as through Facebook or your Google account.
The benefits of a captive portal
In addition to data capture and restricting network and internet access to authorized users, captive portal design comes with other benefits, some of which we’ll cover here.
1. Capture leads and grow your marketing database
The data obtained by a captive portal is an extremely cost-effective way of capturing qualified leads and boosting the number of users in a customer database, with this quality data enabling the creation of more customized campaigns.
It’s also a very quick way of doing this and the more visitors at a location, the quicker it becomes.
What kind of data can a business capture?
Although the type of user data captured via captive portal login can easily be customized to suit the needs of a business, it generally includes a user’s first name, surname, gender, location and age.
In some cases, a captive portal may also be used to collect other information about the user, such as their IP address, the type of device they are using, or the URL of the website they are trying to access.
This information can be used by the business network administrator to monitor usage and ensure that the network is being used properly.
However, it is important to note that the information collected by a captive portal is generally limited to what is required for the user to access the internet and does not include any personal or sensitive information.
2. Offer customers a seamless WiFi experience
Captive portals can improve the user experience by providing users with a clear and simple way to access the internet when they are connected to a public and guest WiFi network.
This can be especially useful for users who are not familiar with wireless networks or who may not know how to connect to it otherwise.
By providing users with a clear set of instructions and a simple way to access the internet, captive portals can help ensure that users are able to get online quickly and easily.
3. Promote your business
A captive portal page splash page can be used to promote a business by displaying information about the business and its products or services.
For example, a coffee shop could use its captive portal to display information about its menu, special offers, and upcoming events.
Additionally, the captive portal could provide links to the business’s website and social media profiles, allowing users to easily learn more about the business and connect with it online.
4. Engage with your customers
In addition to promoting a business, a captive portal can be used to engage customers and encourage them to interact with the business.
For example, the captive portal could include a survey or quiz that customers can take to provide feedback or learn more about the business.
The portal could also include links to games or other interactive content that customers can enjoy while they are waiting for their internet access to be granted.
Additionally, the captive portal could be used to collect email addresses or other contact information from customers, allowing the business to follow up with them and continue the engagement after they leave the premises.
5. Fully customisable
Captive portals can be customised to meet the specific needs and goals of a business.
The appearance and content of the captive portal can be tailored to match the branding and style of the business, and the portal can be configured to display different information or offers depending on the time of day, the customer’s location, or other factors.
For example, a captive portal for a restaurant could display a special lunch menu during the day and a dinner menu in the evening.
Additionally, businesses can use captive portal software to track and analyse customer interactions with the portal, allowing them to continually improve and refine their approach to engaging customers.
Who is a captive portal for?
Any business that provides internet access to its customers can benefit from using a captive portal to promote itself and engage with its customers.
These are just a few examples of the many types of businesses that could use a captive portal.
Coffee shops
Hotels
Airports
Libraries
Retail stores and shopping centres
Restaurants
Bars and pubs
Museums
Gyms
Cinemas
Transportation hubs
Stadiums and other venues
Universities and schools
Hospitals and healthcare facilities
Caravan sites
Conference centres
How do captive portals work?
Essentially, introducing a captive portal to customers typically involves setting up the portal on the business’s network, which can be done via software(settings on their WiFi controller) or hardware(a pre-configured device sent out to the customer). Once the captive portal is set up and configured, the business will need to let its customers know that it is available. This can be done through signage, announcements or other forms of communication. For example, a business could display a sign near its wifi access point that informs customers about the captive portal and how to acquire it. Additionally, a business could include information about the captive portal in its marketing materials, such as on its website, social media profiles and email newsletters.
Are there any risks associated with a captive portal?
One of the main risks is that, because captive portals redirect all network traffic on a device to the login page, users may be vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. This is because the attacker could potentially intercept the user’s data and login information as it is transmitted between the device and the login page. This risk can be mitigated by the use of a secure connection, such as HTTPS. Additionally, some captive portals may use insecure or outdated encryption methods to protect the user’s data, which could make it easier for attackers to steal sensitive information. Finally, users may be at risk of downloading malware or other malicious software from the captive portal login page, if the page is not properly maintained or secured.
How to set up a captive portal network
Setting up a captive portal can vary depending on your specific needs, but here are some general steps:
Choose a platform or software to use for your captive portal.
Configure your wireless access points (APs) to point to the captive portal’s IP address. This will ensure that anyone who connects to your network will be redirected to the captive portal.
Design and customize your captive portal page with your branding, messaging, and any login requirements.
Configure the authentication method for your captive portal. This can be a simple password-based system or a more secure method like using a RADIUS server for authentication.
Test your captive portal to ensure everything is working properly.
Launch your captive portal and monitor it regularly to ensure it continues to function correctly and meets your business needs.
Remember to also consider legal requirements and data privacy laws when setting up your captive portal
What are authentication rates and what can impact them?
Authentication rates on captive portals refer to the percentage of visitors who successfully complete the authentication process and gain access to the network. A high authentication rate is important for ensuring a good user experience and preventing frustration for visitors.
Several factors can impact authentication rates on captive portals, including:
User experience: a poorly designed captive portal can deter users from attempting to authenticate, resulting in fewer successful logins.
Technical issues: Technical problems such as slow network speeds or server errors can disrupt the authentication process and lead to failed attempts.
Authentication method: The method used for authentication can impact the success rate. For example, requiring complex passwords or multi-factor authentication may be more difficult for some users, resulting in lower success rates.
Marketing and messaging: Clear and concise messaging about the benefits of accessing the network and instructions for accessing it can encourage more users to complete the authentication process.
Device compatibility: Compatibility issues with different devices or browsers can also impact authentication rates.
By considering these factors and optimising your captive portal accordingly, you can improve authentication rates and provide a better user experience for visitors.
Best practices for deploying and using a captive portal
Here are some best practices for deploying and using a captive portal:
Clearly communicate the purpose and terms of use
Be upfront about why the captive portal is in place and what users can expect when they access the network. Clearly state any terms of use, such as acceptable use policies or data privacy regulations.
Optimise the user experience
Make the captive portal easy to navigate and provide clear instructions for accessing the network. Ask for only essential information during the authentication process and avoid complex password requirements.
Provide value to users
Consider providing value to users in exchange for their authentication, such as offering free Wi-Fi, discounts, or other incentives.
Ensure security
Use an SSL certificate to encrypt traffic between the user’s device and the captive portal. Implement appropriate security measures to protect against unauthorized access to both the network and user data.
Test and monitor regularly
Regularly test and monitor the captive portal to ensure it is functioning correctly. This includes checking authentication rates, testing different devices and browsers, and addressing any technical issues that arise.
Comply with legal requirements
Ensure that your captive portal complies with any legal requirements, such as data privacy laws and regulations related to logging user data.
By following these best practices, you can deploy and use a captive portal effectively, provide value to users, and ensure a positive user experience while maintaining security and regulatory compliance.
Final thoughts
In conclusion, captive portals are a useful tool for providing network access to users in a controlled manner. They allow network administrators to set up authentication, accept terms and conditions, or display custom messages to users before granting them access to the internet.

Wallys|Brief introduction of Wifi 7
Wi-Fi 7 explained
WiFi 7 is the upcoming WiFi standard, also known as IEEE 802.11be Extremely High Throughput (EHT). It works across all three bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz) to fully utilize spectrum resources. While WiFi 6 was built in response to the growing number of devices in the world, WiFi 7's goal is to deliver astounding speeds for every device with greater efficiency. If you're struggling with constant buffering, lag, or congestion, a WiFi 7 router may be your best solution. WiFi 7 introduces 320 MHz ultra-wide bandwidth, 4096-QAM, Multi-RU, and Multi-Link Operation to provide speeds 4.8× faster than WiFi 6 and 13× faster than WiFi 5. Unlock more scenarios than ever before.
Wi-Fi 7 delivers features based on the new 802.11be standard and extends the capabilities of Wi-Fi 6E. Although Wi-Fi 7 is not yet finalized, capabilities include:
320 MHz bandwidth channels
Multi-link operation (MLO) for channel aggregation across different bands and failover
4096 QAM (4k QAM) for higher peak data rates
Spectrum puncturing to better accommodate interference in wide channels
As part of the certification process, the Wi-Fi Alliance will determine which features are required and which are optional.
What is the regulatory status of Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 7 is tied to the IEEE standard 802.11be, which is still under review. Wi-Fi Alliance is in the process of defining the criteria for Wi-Fi 7 certification, which is anticipated late 2023 or early 2024.

Wallys|DRC-AP5159 Featuring with industrial-grade IPQ4019/IPQ4029 chipset
Features
Featuring with industrial-grade IPQ4019/IPQ4029 chipset
The IPQ4019 and IPQ4029 are both chipsets developed by Qualcomm. These chipsets are designed for use in wireless routers and other networking devices, and they are based on a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor.
The IPQ4019 is a mid-range chipset that supports up to 867 Mbps of 802.11ac Wi-Fi throughput and is commonly used in residential and small business routers. The IPQ4029 is a higher-end chipset that supports up to 2.2 Gbps of 802.11ac Wi-Fi throughput and is often used in enterprise-level networking equipment.
Both chipsets include hardware acceleration for VPNs, support for multi-user MIMO, and advanced QoS features. They also support a wide range of networking protocols and interfaces, making them highly flexible and customizable for various networking applications.
Integrated with 2x 2 5G high power Radio module and 2x2 2.4G high power Radio module
5G high power radio modules are designed for use in 5G cellular networks and are capable of transmitting and receiving data at very high speeds. These modules typically operate in the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band, which is above 24 GHz, and require advanced technologies such as beamforming and massive MIMO to overcome the high propagation loss at these frequencies. High power versions of these modules are designed to provide greater coverage and higher throughput in areas with weaker signal strength.
2.4G high power radio modules, on the other hand, operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and are commonly used in wireless communication systems such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee. These modules typically have lower power requirements than 5G modules, but high power versions are available for use in applications that require greater range or penetration through obstacles such as walls or floors.
Both 5G high power radio modules and 2.4G high power radio modules are used in a variety of applications including telecommunications, industrial automation, smart homes, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Support 4.940GHz to 6.1GHz Frequency Range
This frequency range is within the unlicensed band of the radio spectrum and is commonly used for various wireless communication applications, such as:
WiFi: The IEEE 802.11a standard operates in the 5 GHz frequency range, including the range of 5.15 GHz to 5.85 GHz. This standard provides high-speed wireless connectivity for local area networks (LANs) and is commonly used in homes, offices, and public areas.
5G: The 5G NR (New Radio) standard uses frequencies in the range of 3.3 GHz to 4.2 GHz and 4.4 GHz to 5.0 GHz, as well as the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies above 24 GHz. The 5G network is designed to provide high-speed data transfer, low latency, and greater capacity for mobile communication.
WirelessHD: This standard operates in the 60 GHz frequency range and is used for high-speed wireless communication between devices such as TVs, projectors, and Blu-ray players.
Wireless gigabit Ethernet: This technology uses the 60 GHz frequency band to provide high-speed data transfer between devices.
Other applications that may use this frequency range include radar, satellite communication, and military communication systems.
Support 2.400GHz to 2.482GHz
The frequency range of 2.400GHz to 2.482GHz is commonly used for various wireless communication technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee. These technologies utilize the radio waves in this frequency range to transmit and receive data wirelessly between devices. The 2.4GHz frequency range is widely used due to its availability, low cost, and ability to transmit data over short distances.
Support 2 x 5G MMCX Connectors and 2x2.4G MMCX
These are specifications commonly used in the context of wireless communication systems, specifically for antennas used in wireless routers, access points, and other networking equipment.
The "2 x 5G MMCX Connectors" refer to two connectors that support 5 GHz frequency bands and use the MMCX (Micro-Miniature Coaxial) connector interface. This means that the antenna can be connected to two separate 5 GHz radios or devices simultaneously.
Similarly, the "2x2.4G MMCX" refers to two connectors that support 2.4 GHz frequency bands and use the MMCX interface. This allows the antenna to be connected to two separate 2.4 GHz radios or devices simultaneously.
Overall, the use of multiple connectors and frequency bands allows for greater flexibility and improved performance in wireless communication systems.
Support 5MHz/10MHz/20MHz/40MHz/80MHz Bandwidth
Bandwidth refers to the range of frequencies that can be used to transmit data over a communication channel. The bandwidth of a channel determines the amount of data that can be transmitted over it per unit of time.
The bandwidth options you listed - 5MHz, 10MHz, 20MHz, 40MHz, and 80MHz - are commonly used in wireless communication systems such as Wi-Fi and cellular networks. These bandwidth options refer to the width of the frequency band that is available for data transmission.
In general, a larger bandwidth allows for higher data rates, but also requires more power and may be more susceptible to interference. The choice of bandwidth depends on the specific requirements of the communication system and the available resources.
Support 11ABGN/AC
802.11a: This standard operates in the 5 GHz frequency band and supports data rates up to 54 Mbps.
802.11b: This standard operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and supports data rates up to 11 Mbps.
802.11g: This standard operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and supports data rates up to 54 Mbps.
802.11n: This standard operates in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands and supports data rates up to 600 Mbps.
802.11ac: This standard operates in the 5 GHz frequency band and supports data rates up to several Gbps.
Therefore, "Support 11ABGN/AC" means that the device is compatible with multiple Wi-Fi standards and can operate in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands, supporting high data rates up to several Gbps.

Some basic concepts of wireless communication
In the field of wireless networks, wireless wifi is the hottest term. What is the working principle of the serial wifi module? What function does the serial port wifi module have? wallys communication will explain the working principle of the serial port wifi module and the detailed function introduction. Introduction of Serial Port wifi Module: It adopts UART interface, supports transparent data transmission mode of serial port, and has the ability of multi-mode security. The built-in TCP/IP protocol stack and IEEE802.11 protocol stack can realize the conversion between user serial port and wireless network. Serial WiFi module TLN13UA06 supports transparent data transmission mode of serial port and has the ability of safe multi-mode, so that traditional serial devices can better join the wireless network. To explain the working principle of the serial port wifi module, let's first explain several wireless wifi network structures that we often encounter in our lives. There are two kinds of wireless wifi network topologies, which are basic network (Infra) and Adhoc network (AD hoc). There are two concepts to understand here, the AP, like the router in our home, the creator of the wireless wifi network, the central node of the network. STA, also called site, is the terminal of wireless wifi network, not as our home laptop, ipad and so on can be called site. Basic network (Infra) : a wireless network composed of many aps. The center of the whole network is the AP, and all communications in the network are performed by the AP data conversion. AD hoc network: A wireless network composed of two or more stas without AP. All stas in the wireless network exchange data directly, and this wireless network structure is not rigorous. Advantages of dual-band wifi Now the market began to appear a large number of dual-band WiFi wireless routers, and many ordinary users do not know what is called dual-band WiFi, the following is a brief introduction to dual-band WiFi.
Definition of dual-band WiFi The so-called dual-band WiFi, refers to support two different bands of wireless signals at the same time, the two network segments are 2.4G and 5G, support 802.11a/b/g/n technology, is the fifth generation of WiFi transmission technology.
At present, most wireless products use single frequency 2.4GWiFi wireless transmission, such as wireless mouse, keyboard, USB wireless network card, ordinary wireless router, etc. Dual-band WiFi technology is only supported by higher-end smart devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, and high-end wireless routers.
2.4G and 5G pros and Cons The advantage of 2.4G is that it has a good ability to penetrate walls. The disadvantage of 2.4G is that it is susceptible to interference. The advantages of 5G are strong anti-interference ability, wide bandwidth, high throughput, and strong scalability. The disadvantage of 5G is that it is only suitable for indoor small-range coverage and outdoor bridge, and the attenuation effect of various obstacles on it is much larger than that of 2.4g. Advantages of dual-band WiFi The advantage is that compared with the single frequency WiFi, it has stronger and more stable WiFi wireless signal, higher speed transmission speed, and can make the wireless equipment more power saving, to meet the future high-definition and big data wireless transmission needs.
Just like the city road, some sections can only drive one way, while some sections support two-way driving, single frequency WiFi only supports 2.4G, just like one-way road, more crowded. If you support both 2.4G and 5G, it will be as smooth as the road and the highway. When it comes to the development history of smart home, we have to mention ZigBee technology. ZigBee is based on the IEEE802.15.4 standard, using the frequency band 800Mhz / 900Mhz / 2.4G. Because of its low cost and its unique characteristics of jump transmission, it is widely popular among industrial control equipment manufacturers. Since its publication in 2001, it has been widely used in the field of object connection and wireless communication due to its advantages such as low power consumption and long transmission distance. We can believe that the birth of ZigBee technology is the germination of the Internet of Things. ZigBee has been widely used in the field of industrial control since the beginning of the birth of this technology. People have begun to realize that the simple wired connection of characters can no longer meet our actual needs. We need more wireless connection of ground objects and character interaction in the actual application scenes. We can consider this as the meta era of the Internet of Things. In 2013, Qualcomm launched the industry's first WIFI low-power SOC, which completely broke people's understanding of the Internet of Things. WIFI is based on 802.11 protocol and works in 2.4G / 5G frequency band. Because of its wide area network access capability, people have a bright view of the Internet of Things technology. With the help of the concept of Internet, cloud and intelligent terminal, people can connect everything more conveniently. The author thinks that this is the era of Internet of Things 1.0, the significance brought by WIFI connection is not only the change of connection mode, but also the change of thinking mode. Connection becomes a physical communication mode, and the Internet becomes the spiritual support. In the past few years, the Internet of Things has been from germination to hesitation, and now it is widely recognized. The WIFI connection of the Internet of Things plays a connecting role, bringing hope to the device manufacturers. We are excited to meet this change, but with the in-depth exploration of this direction, there is a problem that the manufacturers have to face again, how to solve the power problem, Indeed, Qualcomm has specially optimized the power consumption of this SOC for the Internet of Things market. However, due to the characteristics of WIFI, power consumption does not have many advantages in traditional low-consumption technologies, such as Zigbee and Bluetooth, so people begin to re-examine low-power physical connection The way of connection and advantages and disadvantages of ZigBee have been introduced in the beginning, about Bluetooth, in fact, is a technology earlier than ZigBee, based on IEEE 802.15.1 protocol, transmission channel is 2.4-2.485 GHz, Bluetooth from the birth has been widely used in wireless communication technology, such as Bluetooth headset, With the development of intelligent wearable technology in the past two years, Bluetooth has been added with new vitality. Before the concept of the Internet of Things was widely accepted, Bluetooth has been a good friend of WIFI. As a technical derivative of WIFI, Bluetooth has played a great role. For example, in our mobile laptops or high-end standard models of smart phones, Bluetooth and WIFI have always existed in the devices. In the past two years, AI audio has been widely launched in the market, giving people a new way to interact with the Internet of Things, and Bluetooth has been endowed with new vitality. ZigBee, WIFI and Bluetooth technologies in the application of the Internet of Things are introduced above. With the increasingly extensive demand for the connection of the Internet of Things, various fields of the Internet of Things are booming, such as the in-depth development of smart home, smart wear, smart car and other markets, and people are increasingly in urgent need of the integration of these three technologies. Although these three technologies are all three communication methods of the Internet of Things, the occasions they are used in do not completely overlap. ZigBee is widely used in sensor and other markets, and WIFI is used in Non-power strict requirements and other household appliances and gateways, Bluetooth is used in smart wear and AI audio field, these three technologies play a complementary role in the actual field of the Internet of things, so from the application scene, these three technologies are mutually complementary, then for the Internet of Things gateway equipment business problem, since there is the necessity of existence and integration, Is it technically possible to do it at the same time? Yes, but there are challenges. As has been introduced above, three communication modes will work in the same frequency band at the same time. We all know that wireless communication will interfere with each other in the same frequency band. In fact, this problem also exists in the integration of these three technologies. Because of the technical retransmission mechanism, Bluetooth and ZigBee have small data volume, so in some application fields, we simply superimpose the concept of fusion, relying on the working characteristics of retransmission of a minimal amount of data, without restrictions on the three technologies to achieve communication through competition.
