Zuko finds out Katara was parentified from the age of eight and was a single mom friend of three until he stumbled into the position of gaang dad friend. So when she visits the Fire Nation Zuko dotes on her, making sure her every need is anticipated and catered to. He even goes as far as - to the horror of his council - kneeling to remove her shoes.

Because of this she earns the nickname Lady Katara among the palace staff which she finds amusing but a little confusing. So one day over tea she asks Iroh why they call her that and he explains:

"They're just practicing."

"Why would you need to practice a nickname?"

"Well my dear, they expect that within a few years Fire will preceed it."

And that's about when Katara chokes on her tea.

okay!!! hello everyone who has decided to follow me :D im so glad ur here, i love reading ur comments & tags on ur reblogs and stuff <3

first two images are a comic of Zuko & Aang's first meeting. This takes place only a few moments after Aang is freed from the ice berg. After this meeting, Zhao docks at a small island & Aang makes his escape, freeing Zuko, who vanishes before the fight is even over.

Character designs! I still have to do Jet & the Freedom fighters, but since they don't show up for a long time, I didn't feel the need to right now. Ty-Lee, Iroh, Ozai, and Zhao.

Captain Yue (and her Pirate crew, nearby) find Aang's ice berg (crashing into it), but unfortunately, Zhao's ship was alerted of their position by the large beam of light it produced.

OKAY for everyone who said they loved small details, here's some small details!

when Aang turns 16, he and Gyatso are summoned to the Western Air temple, which is closest to the fire nation (and the northern water tribe). Aang overhears Gyatso talking to the elders here.

"We have brought you to this temple for a reason. There is war upon us. Firelord Sozin has kept his promise from four years ago. He is launching an attack on the Earth Kingdom tonight. The Avatar must kill him before this war progresses." Gyatso lements that he is not ready, nor should he go against his nature to kill someone. The monks decide that he is not the right teacher for Aang-- queue Aang running away & freezing himself.

The spirit world is gonna work a little differently. I know that when Zhao killed the moon spirit in the original show, the moon went dark & everything lost color. Those side effects don't happen.

Yue brings Appa back to Aang after he's captured by Zhao. Unfortunately, being captain of her own ship, she doesn't go with him.

Aang's favorite food is still Egg Custard Tart :)

Blue, for some reason (WE know why), knows Air Nomad sign language, which he and Aang use to communicate often. I came up with that, and then I read a fanfiction with an author who had the same idea !!! Username on ao3 is Southwest_trickster, I believe.

Aang and Blue reunite through a shared interest in stopping night time crime in a small village off the coast of North Azulon, and Aang gets a bit of a rock chucked at his head. Aang doesn't know that Blue's been trailing him for days.

Blue doesn't want to unmask to Aang for many reasons. The most obvious, at least to him, is that Aang will hate him for who he is. His lineage caused everything that's happened to the World, including the Air Nomad Genocide, and now Aang must fix it all. Another reason is the Fire Nation is sort of wanting him dead or alive.

zuko and aang after a fight with the Yuyan Archers, Zuko barely misses an arrow to the head, instead clipping the ribbon that hides his identity.

aang suspects Blue is the banished prince with a high bounty, whom he saw in a cell inside Admiral Zhao's ship at the Southern Water Tribes. Despite being fire nation, and quite unkind, Aang releases him from his shackles only for him to vanish when soldiers showed to recapture them both.

Katara, Sokka, Aang & Blue travel together to the Earth Kingdom. Unfortunately, Sokka is stupid.

in case u didnt see the last post, TLDR of what it is: Aang was told he was the avatar at 16, after the war has already begun, gets frozen in ice, Ozai ascends to Phoenix King, succeeds in his plan to take over the world, the Blue Spirit joins Aang first (identity still 'concealed', although Aang is 89% sure he knows who he is after a while), and now Aang must save what's left of the world.

One of the most interesting things about the Atreides characters to me is the constant tension between formal and informal power dynamics going on in that House.

Leto and Jessica seem to have a fairly equitable relationship where they genuinely love and respect each other. This rests entirely on the fact that Leto is generally a Good Dude on an interpersonal level, who like, sees Jessica as a person and recognizes and appreciates her intelligence, skills and political acumen. While concubine to the head of a Great House seems to be a fairly high-status role in their world, we know it is not equal in social standing to the role of a wife, and certainly not equal to the male head of the House. Leto does treat Jessica as his equal informally, but by the social rules of their world he certainly doesn't have to.

Similarly, Leto treats Gurney, Duncan and Thufir like trusted colleagues and confidantes, and while they formally treat him with a certain amount of deference (addressing him as Sire or my Lord and accepting that he will be the final authority on things), it's also clear that informally, none of them are hesitant to speak their minds in front of him, offer suggestions or contradict him on something.

Paul's relationships with Duncan and Gurney are similarly complex. They're both older than him and serve as his mentors/teachers. Neither of them are afraid to tease him, challenge him, or reprimand him when they think he's doing something risky. They love him in an almost-familial way and would protect him with their lives. It seems like Paul would like to be friends with them on equal terms. But formally they are both his servants. Or, more precisely, while Leto is alive they are his father's servants and know they have Leto to answer to if anything should happen to his son.

The moments when the formal power dynamics assert themselves are always fascinating. When Paul and Gurney are first reunited, I would say Gurney is still treating Paul like a Duke's son and not a Duke. He's loyal and he is overjoyed to know Paul is still alive, but he still calls Paul by his first name and talks to him like he's giving advice to someone who's still learning. But then there is that moment when Paul pulls rank and gives Gurney a direct order to go to the south and Gurney's demeanor immediately shifts. He only ever addresses Paul as my Lord after that, and he treats him with a deference that makes it clear they are lord and vassal, not friends or family members.

(And like, technically once Leto is dead, Paul is the Duke and everyone in House Atreides is Paul's vassal--including Jessica. Practically when it comes to Paul giving Jessica an order she does not want to follow...well I would like to see him fucking try.)

Leto's leadership style with those close to him seems very much based on creating a familial, mutually protective vibe that wins him intense loyalty. (It is really interesting to see him try this on Stilgar who doesn't buy it for a second.) We see Paul try to emulate that, possibly with an even more intense longing for relationships of genuine equality that's born out of growing up with no peers of his same age and status around him.

But there is still always a little bit of power imbalance, because the chill vibes rely entirely on the continued benevolence of the Atreides men, and that benevolence can be withdrawn at any time.

A lot of the original Dune book consists of Paul's internal monologues. Those all needed to become dialogues to function in a movie. All internal conflict became external, Paul's internal debate was shown through his disagreements with other people. So Chani was given the role of his conscience (and his loyalty to the Fremen), she speaks out against him becoming the Prophet, she opposes the holy war. On the other side, Stilgar, Jessica and Gurney all became more overtly militant than in the book, they push Paul harder towards his fate, allowing him to push back, to express his reluctance and even refusal. This worked pretty well to show Paul's internal struggle with his "terrible purpose." (Unfortunately this choice also removed some of the inner conflicts and complexities from those characters: book!Stilgar was less religious and more shrewd, book!Gurney was himself scared of Paul's ruthlessness, and book!Jessica, despite sharing movie!Jessica's aims, was much more conflicted, more human.)
