Leroux!Erikās rants about being a corpse and being dead are severe dissociation as a result of a lifetime of being dehumanized, abused, and deprived of any love, touch, or acceptance. Humans are social animals who can and have died purely as a result of isolation and emotional neglect. No wonder Erik would feel dead after decades of being denied a basic need of life and being seen as only āthe living corpseā. He is not dead or supernatural, he is just a man born with odd deformities who has lived a terrible, loveless life and his brain has cracked as I believe anyoneās would if they were him.
And when he emphasizes that Christine is alive, his living bride, and didnāt die when she kissed him - itās because she feels more real and more human to him than himself, and she treats him like a human which makes him feel almost alive again or very possibly for the first time. This was a very superstitious time when the story takes place so it makes sense if Erik feels dead, he would believe Christine would die from kissing āa corpseā. When she doesnāt, it breaks his belief and he realizes heās not dead. Because love is the essence of life, if she loves him and he loves her then he must be a person. And heās ready to die then because he has finally received the greatest joy life and humankind has to offer - love.

i hate when people criticise hamlet because the character hamlet is a bad person. like first of all he is not real. and what he is is a representation of grief. the whole point is that grief and depression make you angry and annoying and obsessive and self absorbed. they make you feel like youāre the only person in the world who feels the way you do. they make you take it out on others. hamlet is a manifestation of grief taken to the extreme. and not to assume things about the personal life of a guy who died 400 years ago but. shakespeare wrote hamlet after his son died. hamletās flaws were likely taken from his own grief. hamlet isnāt supposed to be a good person heās supposed to show how unaddressed grief makes you fall apart and hurt people and itās not always pretty

I see a lot of people drool for Erik and his mysterious vibe, and his singing voice and music, but can we take a moment to drool over the fact that he designed a 1) freaking palace and 2) an mf opera house entirely by himself (as a kid nonetheless!), and he must be an amazing architect AND artist. Like damn, he's creative as hell. Christine was probably surrounded by drawings (and candles) in his lair.
I imagine he made drawings such as these:
I know he's fictional, but please appreciate him
